  • In this video ride along as Luke Nichols from cat&carps TH-cam channel visits Steve for some fun fishing below Barkley dam on the Cumberland River. Luke brings his expertise of the many different ways to catch carp on this visit to test them out on the invasion Asian carp that is populated in the Cumberland river. Watch as Steve and Luke finally catch a few of these hard fighting fish but not in the fashion we believed we would catch them with. It ends up that they can be caught on spoons. I dont know why anyone wouldn't want to catch these on the rod and reels. Tons of fun and everyone should give it a try.

Speaking of carp, I use to catch grass carp on acorns of all things as a child.
I found the fish alway congregated under oak trees along the bank and put two and two together.
No much fights like a carp.

Using light tackle to catch big fish is so much fun, I landed a 30lb buffalo fish on 8lb monofilament line using a cheap wallmart pole called the dock demon, the battle lasted so long I actually considered cutting the line, but I just had to see that fish, and thats what fishing is all about, the battle, getting to see your fish and the great outdoors of course.

I fought a 40 pound grass carp for over an hour on 2 pound test. Eventually I started getting impatient and ended up breaking the line. That was the third time I hooked that particular grass carp, still have yet to land it.

I live in Nebraska and there are tons of them, all kinds of species and will hit damn near anything. We have caught those Big head carp on everything from Silver spoons, jigs, crawlers, livers, and even grass. If you're fishing from the bank, invest in a $2 rod holder.

    • @nebraskatpp
      @nebraskatpp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

You are so right Kevin... They are fierce, FIERCE FIGHTERS. If caught in swift water rivers, are excellent table fare. My grandma and grandpa started a restaurant (and bar during prohibition) on and over the Missouri River called "Camp Rulo"... and Carp was a main fare there, along with the other river fish. My favorite fish to eat out of the Missouri is 'Drum'. They are a bitch to clean, and do not yield much meat, but they are great.
Sorry, but the Big Head Carp are nothing but a nuisance and they are terribly ugly.
Carp are one of the best to get kids to learn how to hook, fight and land fish on. Their eyes bug out when they feel a bigger fish rip the drag on a long run... If kids promise to endure the trip, and you surprise them at an active Carp location.... they'll want to stay and come back at dawn the next day....
If you all remember, I think it was field and stream magazine that informed the outdoor world that if you take kids fishing and hunting and have fun before they turn 12, that they will continue to keep it in the rest of their lives.... and pass it on to their children too..... those of us who made our living in the hunting, fishing, boating and camping world....love and thank you for doing this. The great outdoors thanks you too I'm sure. I doubt they thank the liberal tree huggers though because those weirdos don't understand how to help the great outdoors anyway.

Then damn fish are ruining the rivers here (Tennessee, Ohio, Cumberland, ect) they eat the same stuff our little bass, crappie, bluegill and cats eat, killing off their populations.

bow fishing... may be fun to shoot, but can really damage an ecosystem if not done properly. I hope those guys arent sporting it. :/

Reese puff -- bow fishing could barely dent the numbers of Asian Carp in a river or lake, once they get established.

Steven .... your a good fisherman, but if your fishing for trophy sized fish..... you gotta quit using the ultra light tackle..... almost every large fish caught on ultralight gear..... even if revived.... swim away and die after they are released...... something over 70 percent of them.. .. Be sure to spread that around.... Nice boat and awesome livewell.

Well, if it's smaller, you can take a carp and par-boil (or pressure-cook) the thing until you turn the bones to jelly (like Tuna is done)...but I disagree with most that it's 'good eating'...it's just big, lots to eat, and usually done so with lots of other flavorful foods...like turnip greens, hush puppies and whole corn...slathered in salt and butter.

I accidentally snagged a 40lb asian carp while casting jigs. Right behind the dorsal fin. Using an Abu 6500C3 with 20lb mono, he would've absolutely spooled me, I had to use my thumb to stop the spool as I was down to just a few wraps of line left. Couldnt believe I brought it in. Definitely the hardest fight Ive ever had. In the Kansas(aka Kaw) River in Lawrence, KS.

it really is tasty. the y bones are a little bit of a pain but once you get them figured out, they aren't a big deal. Especially when you can easily bring home 100+lb of fish in one trip

Seems like a every fishing video I watch most are on the Ohio river or somebody in the comments is, I’m here in Cincinnati but i literally fish all around Ohio and all around America you can eat the fish out of the Ohio river if you read the Ohio national parks book they let you know what fish is safe to eat where and how many I typically do not fish in the Ohio river because, I typically eat what I catch.

What are you using for bait? I did not think you could catch silver carp on rod and reel, as they are filter feeders? Carp and Bowfin (dog fish) are the best fighters in my opinion.

Ok, nevermind. Found it. Love fishing below that dam. Caught more fish there, than anywhere else. From the mid 80s into the 90s, my dad ran a bait store right down the road from Barkley Dam. Now its just a memory, nothing left of the store

From their full length video of this adventure, most were snagged but a few were caught in the mouth. The takeaway I got from it, is just snag them. If it's not allowed to just use a big weighted treble to snag, then put a really big treble on a heavy spoon and snag them by "accident". If a DNR officer has a problem with someone snagging silver/bighead carp, even if it's not technically allowed, that officer has too much time with too little to do.

Carl H you can shoot them with a shotgun in some places i'm sure in most others you wouldn't get in trouble for snagging them. If you can't snag them then flyfish or bowfish

This reminds me of my days of commercial fishing. I did that for 25 years. We're harvesting grass shrimp just supply bait shops all around the SF Bay Area. Well we're heading up to haul out with the boat to do or maintenance we stopped in San Francisco at a fuel dock. The guy running the doc says you guys got any fish in there. And we didn't but I said to him we got a couple trouser trouts. He said what's that. I said put your hand in your pocket and he busted up laughing. If you want to get free beer. Tell folks that you will tell them where to get the big fish for a case of beer. When they come back with a case of beer. Take your thumb and your finger and grab your lip and say this is where you catch them.

You can't compare a 100 lb sturgeon to a 40 lb something else, and salt water to freshwater. I have caught 70 lb sturgeon and it was strong. I have seen big cat's that were strong but the hardest strongest fighting pound for pound I have seen is the WIPER, those things are like a cross between gorilla and a rino on your line.

I try to size up Rod and line if I know I'm going for cat and carp. Their bites are pretty easy to feel so not really needing ultra sensitive rigs. And I haven't met to many hook, line or sinker shy. And I don't want my lines breaking. Braid line is my prefered heavy fish line as I get the pound test and thinner diameter. Never bothered trying to eat carp. Where I grew up we was tuaght they can't be eaten lol. Which makes no sense. No freash water fish is toxic. Might try it just to try it one day. Carp are heafty fish.

I don’t know about bighead or silver carp, but common carp (out of reasonably clean water) are perfectly good to eat, even delicious. There is a prejudice/misconception in some circles that carp are either inedible or bad tasting. I’d guess that most who claim this have never tried it.

restaurants are selling asian/silver/bighead carp under the name silver fin. apparently it is very good when we'll prepared. unlimited amount where I live. you can catch more than enough by just taking your boat up river and having them jump in.

It's too bad they're here though. They are messing things up, if we believe the fish and wildlife people.
One thing I've heard though, is that fish with really big heads compared to the body are starving. Could that be true of those monsters?
