Thanks for this! I have always loved mtgo for vintage cube and thought it would be fun to play commander with friends to try more trigger intensive decks I'm too lazy for in paper 😅 this will be good to pass on to them!
Was wanting a video like this for the main channel as well, but so happy to see this! I really hate arena but don’t have an LGS anymore, but super hyped to play more magic online!
Goddamn, are you spying on me? :D Started playing EDH on MTGO after a break :D I can't believe WotC is not developing an EDHArena type of client. It would be a slamdunk for their digital division (all those cards that people need to re-aquire). They would need to add an optional in-game voice chat, enable 4 players on one board and they are set. I get it: programming all those cards would take time, but they could go backwards/do a 'remastered' sets. One thing that would be great would be better stability (MtGO dying after too many triggers) and that's it. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy budget (cardhoarder) decks that fit in my budget. Some staples were cheap on MtGO.
What is Free Forum Commander? I just noticed it was an option when making a deck to be either Commander or Free Forum Commander a few days ago and noticed it was a game option in this video. Thank you so much for making this! I have been playing EDH on MTGO for around a decade and did not know you could right click on the phases indicator.
I'm so bummed: I had an MTGO account a million years ago, with a bunch of cards from many booster packs I'd purchased. I have no idea what the login info is, or even what email I'd used. I have no way to recover it :(
It's quite an exaggeration to say the workshop provides all the cards that you're going to want for commander. Not suprisingly, it doesn't really contain the expensive cards, like there's only one fetch land. But if you are going to build a budget deck, there will still be plenty of cards that need to be bought.
I tried mtgo for a couple commander games and after 9:00 on the east coast there would be zero games to join so I just gave up.I was using the rental service for cards and It still felt like a waste of money. Also the rental service isn't like you get access to a bunch of cards henever you want, you still have to actually rent them, then give the cards back before building another deck because there is a limit in how many cards you can rent at a time. The whole thing was a huge headache.
These comments are the epitome of doomerposting man. Mtgo has its flaws of course but its still the best way to play magic online. Every single format is there, and is always filled with people playing.
I heard about being able to order the physical cardboard cards u had in the digital version and it would just remove the digital card from ur account to send u a real one, is that a thing or did I mix it up with something else?
Yes but it's not that simple. You need to complete a full digital set of something that is qualified for redemption (typically just standard sets). You can't just trade in a single digital card for its physical equivalent.
Is the rules engine better for MTGO now? I played it many years ago and as I remember it there were a lot of issues with it back then, basically requiring each player to know and abide by the rules rather than having a framework to prevent people from doing things they shouldn't
You know you don't have to use rental services right? You can be good at using the free play points and earn more points that you can eventually earn tickets to buy cards and have them forever then when finished you can learn how to sell out of your account and get some of that cash back.
Loaning and renting digital cards? Yeah think I'll pass on this one. MTGO seems like a complete mess, I used it 10+ years ago and it looks like it somehow got even worse.
Would you rather use the alternative which is basically just mass opening booster packs to get your singles? Mtgo economy isn’t perfect but it’s a million times better than arena and more accessible
MTGO looks better, but it performs far worse. In it's current state, it's not worth playing. If they ever get around to fixing the issues with games resetting and the client taking 10 seconds to pass priority, then and only then should anyone consider playing games on it.
"Why you should be using it instead of Arena?" You mean there's another reason besides that Standard and the shitty Arena formats suck? 3 years per rotation? a new set every 3-4 months? Alchemy?! Miss me with THAT shit Wizards.
Why make that comment and not name the free platforms? Cockatrice, Tabletop Simulator and Spelltable are the ones I know of but I'm sure there are more.
ive played on cockatrice and xmage, tried arena... I always end up coming back to MTGO. Its great for some casual commander with friends on discord. You only ever need 1 copy of a card which i like too. That's how i sold my friends on it. The commander workshop bundle is great for people just getting online. It gives a new player a big bundle of cards to start building a collection with. If i were restarting id get that bundle, start grabbing every cedh card that's a penny and work my way up to completing a cedh deck. If you play leagues you can go infinite ...if you get into the game that much, but casual commander is pretty accessible at a decent price if that's all you want out of it.
It seems like WotC is trying to wrestle control of commander away from the players/RC. Even if the client didn't look like it was 20+ years old, wasn't missing entire pre-cons and important cards within them and wasn't nearly impossible to resolve some combos on... it really ruins the most important parts of EDH, the social aspect, the politics, the person to person interaction that you can still get even on Spelltable or something like TTS.
You can still have discord to talk while playing mtgo. There's also a chat feature for messaging during game. Tts is a bit annoying to set up if not familiar with it. And youa till need to buy the thing so it's not a free version as many people say. Yes combos are annoying to pull off ia gree
But the point is you don't need to be invested. Arena doesn't allow you to rent cards - you have to build your collection, either by grinding over a long time (which is kinda fun, if you have the time) or by paying an insane amount of money. Mtgo on the other hand, you can just pay 25bucks and boom every card is yours to play with. Still more expensive than cockatrice or spell table, but it's not necessarily a mug's game.
If you don't want a built in rules engines sure. Use a free one. Otherwise. Do use mtgo for full magic rules being in place. So you know how each card and trigger works and not have to guess if you aren't sure.
i like MTGO waaaay more than arena. I just want to shoot the shit with my friends in discord while playing some commander! I had some cards in my collection from years ago when i cashed out. Had just over 200 tix worth of cards from cards i penny specced on back in the day LOL. Been using the proceeds of those tix to put together playsets of CEDH staples over the last year or 2 when they are stupid cheap. LOL every time a CEDH staple gets reprinted i wait for it to tank and spec on it. Its been going good so far. LOL the Commander workshop fucked up a lot of my specs but i made so many tix on them already they are all free now anyway for me. LOL penny speccing on the the shocklands alone made me a couple hundred tickets before the workshop ended that. Now instead of having a playset my buddies have playsets too :D Stuff like mystic remora, rhystic study, some tutors, etc they made me bank. I have completed Kinnan, almost done sisay and rog si and my friends have a good chunk of the cards as well. I missed the boat on some specs for my buddies but theres only so much you can do with a limited amount of tix to spec with.
thanks for updating your video! I used your OG one to get into MTGO and glad to share this with others now

Also, many of the shortcuts Tomer specified are also available by right-clicking on the empty board. Yield When No Play is probably my favourite
There's an option to set that automatically each game.

Wow, I was wondering about whether you or Seth were going to make a video with updates on this at all. Glad you made it after all!
Man, I stopped playing MTGO years ago. Might be time to hop back in with all the new free stuff they're giving away
Great vid Tomer! Been trying MTGO as a magic client for commander and it’s been a great budget way to play the format.

It's custom rules sets. Play banned cards if you'd like
No idea if Tomer will see this, but would love a 2024 update of his Karona, False God deck since the secret lair version is coming out
Why does everyone hate MTGO bruh it's the best way to play digital magic imo. I even think that it looks nice!

MTGO has always enforced the official rules, it has never not been that way.
Renting digital cards? No thank you.
This seems just like a scheme to milk money and trick new players. Hard pass.

Exactly. Even in like 2005, an lgs shop owner warned me against doing MTGO due to the costs and stuff. 🤣
