    Cracking video once again mate and a nice codling...the cod have declined over the years due to the government stopping the sewage being disgarded through the Bristol channels sewage pipes...this meant the rag beds diclining rapidly so no natural food on the sea bed for the cod to feed on....plus you got the trawlers mopping up the small codling so there's no reproduction..we used to catch cod in abundance down cardiff foreshore back 15 years ago

    Cracking video mate. Pristine looking fish and fantastic demonstration of keeping your cool and allowing the fish to free itself from snags. 😉👍🏻🐟 Clarity’s looking good up your way. 😬

    Great video ,liked the comment about 20 years plus ago .
    Although I have moved away from England I miss the winter and spring fishing in the channel
    Back in the mid 80's Used to fish midweek alot and quite often had doubles between sand point and Portishead .
    Whish you well with new channel ,tight lines
    Martyn

      It’s a different place now, Martyn. It’s a lot harder, but it’s still great just being there! Thanks for the positive comments and tight lines👍🏼

      @@thegamblingangler I remember the mid 80s and catching double figure cod from the Admiralty and the Knuckles on Sandpoint and also fishing the wooden pier that used to jut right out into the river mouth on the Navy base which they blew up to stop us fishing it:( Lots of Whiting and Pouting and now............NOTHING. Very sad the decline of the fishing as far as white fish are concerned anyway.

    Hi Jansen catching one codling is a result....a sad reflection on the very poor cod fishing at the moment I’m afraid!! Been fishing the channel since the mid 80s and it’s definitely much harder work these days! Nice video mate! Cheers Ian

      Thanks Ian. There are small pockets of codling around, but a huge number of anglers are blanking too. Perhaps one day, numbers of fish will return to the Bristol Channel once again.

    The flask effect, totally with you on that. Had a cod fish session a few years ago. I blanked for three days while my friends all around me caught and caught. Last cast on the last day, I asked my friend to hold my rod, while I put my rest away. You can guess what happened next 😔 I couldn’t even find the motivation to reel it in, so my buddy did it 😂😂😂 Still for me that’s what it’s about, being with your friends and family in these amazing places. The fish are just a bonus. Keep making those videos 👍🏻

    Yes that's the trouble of knowing the fishing of the past. Knowing what it was like many years before - todays catches are a real downer. The most cod in a season I had was in 1971 from my local beaches. I doubt they will ever return!

    I’ve got to admit , it’s sad seeing a prominent angler knocking a fish on its head mate . We need to encourage catch and release . It’s like dropping litter , one little piece amounts to a big problem

    • @Solroper4461
      @Solroper4461 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I could not disagree more with what you have wrote, a prominent angler has every right to take a fish especially if its for the table, its the under size fish more than anything that needs to be returned, but everyone has their own opinion.

    • @Mel-he1hg
      @Mel-he1hg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Think about all the greedy boats taking hundreds of tons a day they need to be stopped if your not happy with an angler taking a fish or too then I suggest u take it out with the boats !!
      Leave anglers alone !
      Are u a Labour supporter

    • @thegamblingangler
      @thegamblingangler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I believe it’s every angler’s right to retain a fish for the table. Everything in moderation.
      I enjoy eating fish and will take an occasional cod, bass, bream or sole. I’d sooner eat my own catch than take the alternative option which is buying from a supermarket.
      Tight lines.

    • @rokerdog
      @rokerdog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mel-he1hg is that the boats catching the bait to catch the fish

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I really do have to question you on that one. Taking a clearly legal sized fish for the table isn’t something I believe should be chastised. I could go down the route of saying “it is an anglers right to take a legal fish for his own consumption” but I would rather you consider that without practices like this people are losing their connection with where their food comes from. Instead of the selective and sustainable methods of angler, rod and line. The alternative is mass scale commercial fishing - of which there is no denying the damage it has on the oceans.
      I have no doubt that had he caught more he would have exercised catch and release. Showing moderation and sustainability in his fishing. Which is the example I feel prominent anglers should set to people. If that is your argument, and all you ever want to do is catch and release, why don’t you go one better and just forgo the catching altogether?
