I'm finding it doesn't work. Our school implemented SEL two years ago and I'm seeing twice the amount of behavior issues. Perhaps it's being implemented poorly and I want it to work, yet kids know the consequences are kindness and compassion rather than... consequences. When they want a brain break or a snack they just misbehave and bingo SEL to the rescue.
@@kellymerrill5294 , there is a lot of info online explaining that SEL sets up children for communal thinking and socialized solutions rather than independent thoughts and success going their own way. I dont have a lot of experience with it yet, but im learning about it with skepticism
S.E.L. and C.R.T. should not be utilized in the classroom nor used as a basis for a curriculum that is taught to kids of any age level. There are several hundreds of schools across this country where the kids can't complete Math, Science, or other subjects at their own grade level because the schools would rather focus on BS. Just my 2 cents.
This all sounds so nice and sugar coated but the reality is that it enables teachers and aides to essentially practice psychology on children in public schools without a license and without the parents knowledge or consent. It is the state, through the public school system, pushing values on your kids that an administrator decides. An administrator who is almost guaranteed to be a progressive liberal whose ideas will permeate every aspect of the curriculum Funny how he mentions the WEF and "Stakeholders". Equally terrifying is his use of a chime at the beginning and end if his little talk. I suppose we are to react as Pavlov's dogs did. It's actually sickening
I couldn’t agree more. Notice the SEL diagram shows the schools in the center of the ring. Then community, and at the very last outer ring is parents/families. It should be the opposite, the family should be the nucleus of a child’s life, then community, then schools.
Oh please, at the end of the day, the word "liberalism" triggers you and prevents you from actually being critical and engaged with this concept. Tin foil hat down, clown.
“What’s happened to you” doesn’t explain or justify Josh’s outburst. Josh doesn’t need to be coddled, he needs to learn resilience. He still has to function in the world despite the bad things going on in life. In real life, most people don’t care one bit about Josh’s problems because they have their own. In the real world, we are expected to do our jobs and do so professionally. Coddling Josh will only make him a failure in real life. And this is far worse than what he is suffering through now. Resilience is the answer, not SEL.
SEL would turn Josh into the kind of guy who needs a chime to get through a nine minute presentation that provides zero actual details about the topic and relies on a fictional story as its basis.
I know, our society is literally doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing- instead of making kids more resilient, they are giving into their tantrums.

I think I lost it at the bell. So we're not supposed to say "what is wrong with Josh," but rather "what happened to Josh" -- which essentially positions Josh as a victim and devoid of his own agency. Perfect conditions for Josh to learn to trust the nurturing school and hate his bickering, insensitive parents! See how this works?
Josh *is* the victim, he's a CHILD. The adults should know better. Josh being a child he's still developing and environment plays a big factor on what he learns and how he learns it. In my perspective, the adults failed Josh by not modelling on how to manage and work with their emotions, but using him as a safer option to take out the stress of their emotions on.
