  • In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
Today I'm sharing a set of six altered teabag sachets. Follow along as I create a series of tiny collaged artworks using recycled teabag sachets, gesso, Distress Ink and Oxide sprays, Tim Holtz and Rubber Dance stamps, flower and butterfly stickers and Idea-ology ephemera.
I bought all the products used in this video myself.
Distress Ink Spray - Broken China; Distress Oxide Spray - Speckled Egg
Ranger Archival Inks - Olive, Pebble Beach, Potting Soil
Tim Holtz Field Notes stamp set by Stampers Anonymous
Weed Love stamp set by Rubber Dance stamps
Idea-ology Snippets - Curator and Number Strips
Flower and butterfly stickers widely available online

Omg! Shut the front door! I love these! I’m really regretting all of the hundreds of tea bag papers that I threw in the trash. Ok, I’m ok now. I’m have almost stopped thinking of how many thousands that are gone. Just kidding. 😢 these are lovely. I really like the idea of making them in groups of 6. Great idea! I already have everything I need to do this project. I could make some papers lol. I’ll go get a cup of tea. 🫖 thanks for sharing! Hugs, treen 💕🫖💕🫖🎨🎨🎨

I'm def gonna remember to save my tea bags now. Such a cute, fun & easy idea! I often use Lipton tea...(decaffeinated) for my iced tea...that I drink a lot of, and I used to save the boxes, (not sure if Lipton is as popular or as available in the UK as it is in the states.) Anyway, their box is such a nifty design with little tabs that help to keep the top secure when closed. It's just so well designed. Some years back I made my mom in-law a little covered trinket box using one of the Lipton boxes. I covered it inside and out with some pretty paper and fabric and used a die cut on the top center of an 18th century style silhouette of a dancing couple and embellished it with ribbons and pearls and made a little closure. It turned out so nice and my mom in-law loved it. I thought I'd make some more, but never did. It did take a lot of time and I'm doing other things now, but your project reminded me of mine...the tea connection! 👍

    • @w0rdsandp1ctures
      @w0rdsandp1ctures  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

That sounds charming! Yes, I do know the Lipton boxes. They are quite similar to the boxes these ones come in (these are Norma supermarket's own brand Cornwall teas, but Lidl also have the little envelopes on their own brand Lord Nelson teas).
And yes, I keep quite a few boxes for storage... but mostly I just paint them white or cover them with some paper rather than full-on decorate them like yours!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.

I've been using my sachets to make tiny pockets too. I need to get some gesso to try your method. I've just been gluing paper on them to make them decorative and give them extra stability. I also turn them over and make mini library card pockets, leaving the flap upright.

Yes, I have done a couple in the past with paper stuck on, and the extra stability is great, as you say... but in the end I usually prefer the au naturel look. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Love the mini library card idea!

Thank you so much. I hope you can track down a brand of tea that uses them. Mine come from own-brand teabags from Lidl and Norma supermarkets (Those are both German supermarkets which are here in CZ, and in many other countries of course, including the US... but I heard from other crafters that, for instance in the UK, they now sell the teabags without the envelopes 😪).
If you can't find the teabag sachets, then cash envelopes are a good alternative - I'm planning a video using those some time soon too.

I believe those floral ephemera pieces that had the blue and purple flowers are actually what they call pet stickers, and they are stickers but the backing is difficult to get off. The best way I found is to take a piece of Scotch tape attaching it to any edge of the flower and then try to get your fingernail in between the two layers and the tape will hold the one side as you pull off the top layer. Hope that helps so that you don't have to glue everything down Plus I have also found that putting glue on the back of those type of stickers is very Persnickety as far as it drying because they are not porous😊

Oh, interesting... I'll give it a go. I don't mind gluing, and I can't say I've noticed that they are problematic drying, but every little helps. MInd you, given I'm often sticking down over quite textured surfaces, I usually put extra glue even on sticky stickers!
Thanks so much for watching and taking time to add that information about the stickers.

I see no reason why using gesso on the edges wouldn't work - although if they are already gesso'd it wouldn't show up very much. But if you're gessoing on a contrasting colour that would show. Best thing is to experiment and see if it gives you the look you want.
And absolutely, if you've got real pressed flowers, go for it! They will be beautiful. You might want to seal them with some matte medium or other sealant to give them more longevity.

These are so gorgeous! Well done indeedy. I've saved quite a few of these sachets and look forward to having time to get back in the studio and start creating mixed media again... I'm currently doing an online fine art course and working in the sitting room so I've got access to the big screen TV. My studio has been relegated to a dumping ground which is always what happens when I'm not using it! I have a Graphics Fairy Premium Membership and they have several albums of printable paper dolls amongst other things - very free and easy use rules, and excellent and varied materials. I've printed and cut out loads of stuff for collage work. You can change the sizes and colours to your heart's content.

@@w0rdsandp1ctures Thanks for your lovely reply! My poor studio is a tip at the moment. I need to have a major blitz on it before I can use it again! As for the Graphics Fairy, I do agree - if you are printing out a lot of full-sized backgrounds you certainly get through a lot of ink!
Talking of teabags, I meant to ask you - what brand is that tea - "Cornwall"? I looked it up and couldn't find it. The sachets are better than most because they have a flap. Also, I often dry teabags, scrunched up, on watercolour paper. They make the most fabulous stains that you can then doodle on. I've just done some on a scrap of paper that was much more absorbent than usual and the stains spread right out, with gorgeous crinkly edges that looked as if they'd been burnt. I overlapped the stains and have now added detailing with Tombow Dual Brush Markers to create flowers. They came out great!

Cornwall is the own brand of Norma, a German supermarket which is pretty widespread in Europe. Lidl's own brand Lord Nelson has the same envelopes, but someone else who has been on the hunt told me that particular packaging is now only in Europe, not even in the UK, so I have no idea whether they have it in their US stores.
I love actual teabags for creating art too - fragile as they are. Your scrunchie ones sound fabulous!

Temu (who seem to be marginally less evil - at least they haven't yet been stealing PaperArtsy copyright designs and reproducing them as cheap bad stamp sets) have some nice ones... just go to Temu and search for "flower stickers" (but remember they are not actually sticky).
I can't help with Dutch teabags, I'm afraid, but I have also often used cash envelopes in the same way... They're mostly a little bit bigger, but still a great substrate to work with. You can usually get them in UK pound stores, 100 or 200 in a pack for a couple of pounds - something like these, but less expensive, hopefully - www.amazon.com/Envelopes-Gummed-Wedding-Favors-Showers/dp/B0CR6N3N55?th=1 I should think there's something similar in the Netherlands. Have a look online for mini envelopes, cash envelopes, wedding favour envelopes, and even teabag envelopes, and you can probably track something down.

They are stickers! I discovered they would peel off, but it's really hard to do. Somewhere in the comments here somebody gave some advice about using a pin or something, I think. But I still wouldn't peel off the backs for projects where they are floating in a dimensional collage (which is where I most often use them... like here th-cam.com/video/vHZ-skrLSx8/w-d-xo.html for example), because the stiff plastic helps make them more sturdy.

These are actually the little paper envelopes that these particular teabags come in. You absolutely can use dried used teabags to create art (that's one for a future Few Minutes of Fun, I guess!)... they are very fragile and beautiful to play with.
If you can't get hold of the teabags which come in envelopes (these are from Lidl's own brand teabags - and from another German supermarket, Norma too - but apparently only if you buy from Lidl Europe now. In the UK they no longer come in the paper envelopes) then a good alternative is something like cash envelopes (little envelopes sometimes used for paying wages - you can usually pick them up in a dollar store or pound shop or euro equivalent for about 100 envelopes for £1ish).
Hope you have fun playing, whatever you play with!

      @w0rdsandp1ctures  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Well, foil will be fun for some techniques (good in an embossing folder for textured metal!), but it might not play very nicely with paint. You could always use those little cash envelopes instead (you can usually pick up a pack of a couple of hundred in a dollar store type place). I use those quite a lot too, and I have it on my list to have a few minutes of fun with them some time soon...
So happy you enjoyed watching, and I hope you'll find a way to play somehow.

I'm rather new to watching your lovely talks and demonstrations. My take each time is "permission" is given to me to be what I am artistically. I also am a person who likes to adventure and what happens, happens. I have always marveled at and felt unprofessional when seeing artists work their magic. I don't know what is going to happen, and I am terrifically fine with that. I feel as though I will know instinctually if it's correct. Most times, I'm good with the outcome, sometimes not. Never thought of this! Thanks for the inspiration. Also, I remain amazed that you never seem to get your lace sleeves messy in any of your videos. My clothes always look like under paper.

Your comment about the sleeves made me laugh. I use fingerless gloves in the winter (it gets pretty cold here in rural Czech Republic), and they do tend to get grubby... but for some reason, so far these sleeves have survived! So happy you're enjoying the fun and inspiration - thank you so much for taking the time to let me know.

I’m sure you do it/have done it but I snip my tiny snippets if they are too long. You are a joy to watch and listen to

Thank you for that lovely feedback.... and yes, I'm not shy about snipping things when they don't fit!
