A few (more) minutes of fun - with two ways with sprays

- In this series you can join me at the craft table once a week for a few minutes of art and craft creativity - between ten and twenty minutes usually. But sometimes a project needs a little MORE than just a few minutes... so in A Few (More) Minutes of Fun, you'll be invited along for a deeper dive into my creative process.
Today I'm taking a deep dive into Distress Sprays. I'm creating tag backgrounds by playing with two ways of applying sprays, but also working with different spray formulations to create texture and contrast in those backgrounds. See how Distress Spray Stains, Distress Oxide Sprays and Distress Mica Sprays can mix and match to create magical effects.
Distress Sprays by Tim Holtz and Ranger Ink
Distress Spray Stains: Broken China, Faded Jeans, Peeled Paint, Salvaged Patina, Shaded Lilac, Speckled Egg, Stormy Sky
Distress Oxide Sprays: Peeled Paint, Salvaged Patina, Speckled Egg, Stormy Sky, Uncharted Mariner
Distress Mica Sprays: Empty Tomb, Frosted Juniper, Specimen, Winter Frost
I bought all the products used in this video myself.

First let me say that I love the way you begin & end your videos! The inks are arranged like a rainbow & it immediately makes me smile! Second I was thrilled to see so many sets of examples! Usually we see just one example & it’s difficult to see all that the presenter wants us to see. Doing pairs helps us to understand how unique each one is! Then the comparison between all the pairs allows us to see how different from each other are the pairs! It’s fascinating to me to see all those examples which were all made in this session. We saw every addition you did & every time you dried them or flicked them or dabbed them! No funny business! It’s really amazing, Alison, you are a very good teacher! I’m thrilled to have found you! Erica❤
I'm so happy you found your way here - welcome! What a thoughtful and delightful comment to read, thank you. Yes, working in multiples is such a wonderful way to really explore products and little variations in technique, and be able to see the different results and effects happening right in front of you. None of them is either right or wrong, just a different result to play with...
Happy the layouts make you smile... they do the same for me!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting - I know you've done so elsewhere too. Off to read those now...
Wonderful tutorial! You have got the most delightful accent and I can hear how much you enjoy what you are doing in your voice. Thank you so much for all of the information and details. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
So happy you enjoyed it - thank you so much for taking the time to leave this lovely comment.
OHHHH such fun!! Thank you for sharing!
Happy you enjoyed it!
Absolutely gorgeous. I love your colors.
Thank you - nature is usually my guide on colour choices, and she never gets it wrong!
Love those colour combinations. Thanks❤
Thank you - blues and greens are everywhere in nature at this time of year, so they are everywhere in my work too!
@w0rdsandp1ctures We are mid-Autumn here in Australia. Any deciduous trees are orange brown & gold, though in our climate there's more evergreens. Lots of eucalyptus trees & wattle and pine trees. More muted greens than European trees. It's still quite sunny most days with temperatures in the low 20s. Lovely time of the year. Thanks again 💕
What a fantastic video about the distress-sprays....I don't have ... but now do want to have 🫣 you have such an inspiring way to show how you build up these backgrounds and let me see that you really make another kind of background with it then with normal distress inks. So fun how too at the end that you suddenly see that there was something missing and add that. Thanks again Alison for these "few minutes" of great fun❣️
Sorry to be tempting you with another product! But I'm really happy you enjoyed the video... and yes, it's genuinely me just filming as I play, so if I see something I want to change, I'm going to change it!! Thanks so much for all your support.
Thank you for explaining the differences between the inks and oxides for a beginner 😊
You're welcome - there's an even more detailed beginner's look at using the different ink pads coming soon - so watch out for that!
This has convinced me to be more playful and go with my intuition in the moment when playing with my colors!
That's wonderful - it is an instinctive thing, and it's a question of building up the habit of listening out for what your heart wants... otherwise known as playing! I hope you have lots of colourful fun. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
You’re such an inspiration!!!❤
That's so kind of you, thank you.
Learning so much, excited to add to my spray collection
Great to hear that you're finding these videos useful (and making a shopping list!).
Beautiful work. You explained things so well. I think I can achieve this. I'm going to have a play tomorrow.
Great - I hope you have lots of fun with it. Just remember to clean those stamps up quickly!
I can see another purchase coming. Never used the distress sprays before but beautiful effects. Thank You
They're lovely to play with, but if you've already got some sprays, you can always try out the techniques with those. Or if you've got any liquid inks, you can pop those into spray bottles and spritz and flick away! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
These are stunning! Thanks for showing these techniques. Now I’m ready to go try some of the sprays.
Thank you so much... they're a good start as backgrounds, with some interesting textures emerging. Looking forward to finding out what they want to do next!! Have fun playing with your sprays.
Beautiful 😍 thank you so much for sharing
You're welcome - so happy you enjoyed it, and thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi Alison… loved watching you play with sprays… I’m sorry I am late in commenting but I was hoping for a good report of me having a play with sprays but alas I didn’t play with them… although… I did organize my shelves with my sprays & paints on them LOL… I like how you do the pairs of tags that coordinate together. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity and inspiration! Have a wonderful week!!! 🙂
Organisation is also a form of creativity (especially when it involves craft supplies and organising your colours!)... and it will hopefully make it much easier to come and play next time you have a few minutes to spare. There's absolutely no need to apologise for lateness - it's lovely of you to take the time to comment each week!
I played and created right along with you this morning 🌄 from the East coast in the US.
Oh, how lovely - so happy to hear you had your very own few (more!) minutes of fun. Thanks so much for letting me know.
Beautiful, Alison, thank you! Haven't played with my sprays in awhile so it's certainly on the agenda now! 💙💚🩵
Great - I'm always so happy when I hear that neglected craft supplies are going to come out to play! Hope you have lots of fun.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures Indeed! Thx again, Alison.
So fun!
Thank you - a bit of inky messy playtime is always fun!
@@w0rdsandp1ctures absolutely the best time.😁
They turned out amazing💜💜
They're a good start as backgrounds - some pretty cool textures. I'm looking forward to seeing where they want to go next!
Love this series! Thank you for the inspiration and few minutes of fun!
I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying it - hope you'll have lots of fun playing yourself soon too.
Thanks for the explanation on the different types of sprays! Can’t help but be interested in the wallpaper that is covering your desk….the overspray that is on there has me thinking how you could cut that up and make something! TFS!
Yes, it will definitely get used! I used some scraps of it as test pieces when I was dyeing fabric with red cabbage recently, and the the effect was so cool - the textured bits didn't take the colour as much as the flat paper in between, so they looked amazing. (There are some pictures of that on my Instagram grid if you're curious - instagram.com/p/C5WJA_HI9RQ - should get you there.) Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
So gorgeous such a beautifil way to see it all happen! Love to see how using all 3 mediums works. Such great video´s love watching them!
That's great feedback - thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a lovely comment.
Thanks for the inspiration, I learned a lot.
I'm happy (if a little surprised!) to hear that... just some simple inky fun. Grateful as always for your lovely support.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures I realised now that I don't layer the inks enough. And that probably the surface of your tags is smoother than the papers that I use. The first droplets don't soak in as they do on most paper.
@@cigale1254 Oh yes, paper is absolutely key! I don't really understand why so many people (TH included) like working with the Distress Inks on (Distress) watercolour paper... too absorbent to get real playtime with the inks as far as I'm concerned. A slight sheen on the surface is really helpful, I think, for cool effects. (These aren't actual Ranger tags, but they're pretty close to them.) And yes, the more layers the merrier (mostly!) Happy Sunday!
Wonderful time with ye again, always inspiring 🎉❤
That's so nice to hear - thank you!
Love all this inkiness!
Thank you - always fun to play with messy ink!
Thanks for your great explanation of how these different sprays work with each other and alone 🎉 Ella
You're welcome - happy you found it useful. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
I wanna come over and play and make some tags!!!! Very fun.
Happy you're enjoying the fun... even if it's a long-distance playdate! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love these longer minutes of fun. You've mentioned the size of your tags before but could you let us know where you get them?
Glad you're enjoying them... there are a few more (more) minutes in the pipeline for sure!
And with the tags, I can't help much, I'm afraid. They're not the Ranger ones, but pretty much identical in quality, and I used to buy them in bulk from a lovely independent craft retailer in the UK called Craft Obsessions. They have sadly now gone out of business. Thankfully, I still have quite a lot of tags to work my way through, but I'm going to be looking for a new source after that...
@@w0rdsandp1ctures too bad but I will be on the look out for a replacement
Love these, must get some oxide sprays.
If you've got some Oxide ink pads, you can always add a bit of chalky interest that way... you don't HAVE to have the sprays (though as a crafter, I do know that the wishlist is always getting longer!). Either way, I hope you'll have lots of fun playing with whatever sprays or inks you've got.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures thanks, I do have some pads, i'll give them a go 😉
@@dawnmason2378 If you smoosh the ink from the pad onto your craft mat (or onto an acrylic block) and spritz it with a bit of water, then you can pick it up with a brush and flick it, just as you would flick it from the nozzle stick of the spray. It'll be just a little different as you'll have already activated the chalky oxide look with the water, but overall the end result will be pretty much the same!
I can't keep my grand daughter out of distress ink. She loves it. Must show her this video
Oh dear, once the Distress bug bites... it doesn't let go! Hope she'll enjoy the video too.
These tags are gorgeous 🩵💙💜💚
Thank you... they're a good start as backgrounds, with some interesting textures going on. I'm looking forward to some stamping/stencilling/collaging next... we'll see!
Another great video, thank you. You give a much clearer explanation of the differences between the inks and oxides and may I cheekily ask which brand of tags you use please? TIA
Very happy that you found the video so helpful.
And with the tags, you can certainly ask, but it won't help you, I'm afraid. They're not the Ranger ones, but pretty much identical in quality. I used to buy them in bulk from a lovely independent craft retailer in the UK called Craft Obsessions, who have sadly now gone out of business. Thankfully, I still have quite a lot to work my way through, but I'm going to be looking for a new source after that...
Absolutely love this play session my girl friends and I will be doing this one tomorrow I’m so excited. Also how did you label your sprays?
Great - I hope you'll have lots of fun playing tomorrow!
If you mean the little labels on top of the lids, they are available as sheets to download and print from free on the Ranger Ink website. If you print them onto sticky label paper, you can use a punch to cut them out. (Or, as I think I did, print them on regular paper and spend quite a long time with some scissors on a long winter's night because I didn't have the right size circle punch!) I think you should find the labels for the various products here: rangerink.com/pages/organize-your-ranger-products
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Thank you!
Thank you for this fab video. Gorgeous coloured tags… I’m going to dig my sprays out for a play 😊. I apologise if I’m telling you something you already know, if you spray the backs of the tags with water before laying them down to spray inks on the front, they don’t curl up quite so much, so less of the sprays just run to the ends of the tags.
That's a great tip, thank you for sharing it... I have done that in the past, and must remember to do it again! Hope you have lots of fun playing with your sprays. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful creative inspirational minutes of fun. I so enjoy hanging out with you for a bit!
That's so great to read, thank you - very happy you're enjoying the fun!
You do such beautiful tags and love all your color combinations!!!! Such happy tags!!!
Thank you so much... I do like some of the textures that turned up here. Now to work out what comes next!
Beautiful works! Makes me want to buy Distress sprays 😊
They are definitely fun to play with - you don't need every colour, just pick a couple of favourites to go at the top of your wishlist, and see whether you enjoy using them. Thanks for another lovely comment.
Thank you so much Alison, I really really enjoyed watching you create these beautiful and wonderful tags, I really love ❤️ ❤❤❤ them all. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you... I really enjoyed making them! Sprays always mean you end up with inky fingers, but that's always the sign of a good time. Have a great weekend when it gets here!
Beautiful! 👏🏻 😍Thank you for sharing! Lovely greetings!❤️
You're welcome - happy you enjoyed it.
Always love your inky backgrounds and the combinations you create 😍 Was just thinking my pre-made stash is getting low, might have to have a play!
It's always the right time for inky playtime! Happy you enjoyed it.
Oh do I love this tutorial! I am pretty new to this and I have a few questions. I have Oxide spray, Ink spray (Dylusions), Shimmer spray (Dylusions), Mica Spray and also Mica stain. Can you tell me what the difference between Mica Stain and Mica Spray please? Also is my Ink spray Dylusions by Ranger is the same as the one you are talking about? I really learned a lot tonight! Thanks for this video! It is so appreciated! Greetings form Québec Canada
So happy that you found the tutorial useful, though clearly there are still unanswered questions!
I don't have any of the Dylusions sprays, so I can't tell you anything about those, but I am very sure that they are not the same formulation as the Distress Range. Dyan Reaveley creates in a very different way from Tim Holtz, and will have created that line with Ranger to suit the kind of work she likes to do. Tim's Distress range is developed to create his way. Not having used the Dylusions, I can't tell you specific differences, but you can find both Dyan and Tim demo-ing on TH-cam, explaining their products in great detail!
Again, with the Mica, Tim would be your best bet for a full explanation, but as far as I know there are only three Mica Sprays from Tim - three metallics - and they are shimmering mica powder in a clear fluid. So what you are getting with those is a shot of pure metallic shimmer when you add them to a project. The Mica Stain Sprays come in a range of seasonal colours, making up a rainbow palette in total, and in those you get a tinted fluid (basically like one of the Distress Spray Stains themselves) with added shimmering mica powder in the same or a complementary colour. So they are a more colourful way of applying mica shimmer.
It's possible one of Tim's makers, or Tim or Ranger themselves could give a better explanation of that (and/or correct me if I'm wrong), and I'm sure you can find lots more information on the Ranger website -rangerink.com/ - but I hope that's of some help for now.
I need to get some tags, very inspiring, a delight to watch the total process , very educational!
They're such a great substrate to work with... no stress if you spoil one (or more), so you feel really free to experiment. So happy to hear you enjoyed the video so much - that's wonderful to know, thank you.
Just curious. What planet are you on that it’s the “end of May”? lol. Love your tags and your process thanks for sharing.
Hmmm... a slip of the tongue, I guess. I filmed this about a week ago, so I expect I meant the end of April. I'll have to listen back to find out where I said it! Happy you're enjoying the videos, and clearly listening very attentively!!
beautiful play!! thanks for the tips!!
You're welcome - happy you enjoyed it.
Thanks I love blues and greens also!! I enjoyed the video too 😊
Always my happy colours (especially if I have some grey and brown around too!)... thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Finally know your secrets, lol. But I still think you are the master of color.
Ha ha - okay, I'll take that!!
These are really beautiful. What do you do with them?
Happy you like them. I often add some collaging over the top (there are examples of doing that amongst the Few Minutes of Fun videos) to make a small artwork, or sometimes I die-cut them (often as stems and leaves) for use on other projects, or a tag might be the basis for composing an art journal page (plenty of that going on in my journal flip-through in the Books, Books, Books series), or even making a whole tag book from scratch... all sorts of things, really.
But also they might just stay like that for weeks, months or even years... it's the process of making and exploring the medium in itself that is important, and I can take that knowledge and understanding with me into future creative processes.
Hope that gives you some ideas... thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Loved this tutorial 🤍🤍🤍 this is the first time I’ve actually understood how the different formulations work. I’ll be checking my inventory for all these colors. They complement each other beautifully, reminds me of a mermaids underwater playground 🥰
So happy to hear you found some clarification here... there's a detailed comparison using the different kinds of Distress ink pads coming up some time next month, so that might also be useful. Love the idea of a mermaids' playground!!
So relaxing ☺️ Even my 7yo enjoyed watching with me on this chilly drizzly Sunday afternoon while working on her own art. Your whole aesthetic is very pleasing to watch. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Oh, that is lovely to hear, thank you for letting me know. I hope you both had lots of fun creating together, as well as enjoying the video!
Thank you for sharing these two ways of using sprays. I loved your clear descriptions of what you were doing and explanations of your thinking. Your tags are beautiful.
Happy you enjoyed listening to me "thinking out loud"! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Thanks for this fantastic video!
You're welcome - so happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for letting me know.
Wonderful tutorial session!
So happy you enjoyed it - thanks so much for taking the time to let me know.
I had an odd experience with the mica sprays last year. I used them over acrylic paint on an accordion book. It took ages for them to settle onto the paper--kept coming off on my hands. I've not had that experience with the other stains.
I think it can be tricky using them over paint... the paint acts as a kind of resist (see the Acrylic Paint Resist video for proof of that... th-cam.com/video/82tVKvxsXsg/w-d-xo.html ). And mica can be unpredictable. I'm sure you tried heat setting them? Or did they eventually settle down (or come off altogether!)? If they go onto an unprepared paper surface, I think they're more likely to be properly absorbed and stay put.
In any case, I'm sure you found a way to work with it! Thanks so much for your company on this creative journey.
@@w0rdsandp1ctures I didn't try heat setting--it didn't even occur to me! However, they did settle down in time. Thanks for the link--I'll be sure to watch the video.
Love all this inkiness
Thank you - nothing better than a bit of inky playtime!
Beautiful...I love how you tied the first 2 cards into the rest at the end.
Thank you... yes, now they work as a set, in case I wanted to use them in a tag book, or some other way where they will all be together. It's just how my creative brain likes to work!
Thank you! You have clarified for me how to use these inks and oxides. ❤
That's great to hear... and there are some more detailed inking videos coming soon, starting with using the ink pads, so keep an eye out for those. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Thank you.
Thanks a lot for these explanations. I love the effect produced. I've started to get myself a few. I will try the blues and greens.
I'm always a fan of blues and greens (and browns and greys), but you should definitely go with whatever colours make you happiest! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
I just love these little moments of fun Alison. It’s a lovely relaxing end to the hectic day for me, with inspiration for the next day!!
That's wonderful to hear, thank you! Hope you're having fun playing today then!
These are beautiful. 😍. Love your use of color and texture to make these fantastic pieces
Thank you - it's the contrast of chalky, shimmery and translucent that always gets you something yummy! Happy you enjoyed it, and thank you for taking the time to comment.
Great colours results Alison! Thank you for sharing ❤
They've got some pretty cool textures going on... I'm itching to add some stamping/stencilling etc now!
Thank you Alison, a wonderful start to the day! Felt unmotivated so watching this has given me a creative boost and im off to rewatch and create alongside! Thanks 🤩 ❤😊
So happy to hear that you're inspired to have some spray playtime - I hope you have lots of inky fun! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
A great video, I learned so much
Thank you so much - I'm happy to hear that. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond - since you replied under another comment, TH-cam didn't notify me about it directly. I've only just found out I need to actively look for replies to replies!!
