  • Garden Gals and Guys, in this video I'm showing you how I'm storing dahlia tubers this year, which varies from how I've done it in the past. I'm hoping for better results by storing them in clumps with some dirt left on them and placing them in pine shavings in a plastic tote. The temperature I'm looking to keep them at is right around 55 degrees F!

Comment below and tell me which method you're using to store your dahlia tubers over the winter. If you don't have to store them and can leave them in the ground...I'm jealous!
    Happy planting!

I’m in 5b and will dig up my favorite tubers today. Last year I over wintered under 12 inches of leaf mulch and Tyvek house wrap-100% success. This year I’ll use gallon size zipper closed plastic bags and cedar shavings from Walmart. I stored in my garage then in a basement storage room. This method worked for me in prior years.
Enjoy the Beautiful Illinois fall weather!

Hey Steph :) Last year being my 1st for growing or storing Dahlias I had good results storing in clumps in pine shavings. The only thing different was I layered them in a cardboard box for no other reason than that is what I had.
This year I grew some balls 😮 and attempted dividing before storing. I read Kristine Albrecht's book Seed to Bloom this summer and I'll tell ya I learned quite a bit. Worth the read as some refer to her book as the Bible of Dahlia growing!

Heya Steph! You’ve had lovely Dahlias this season! I’m glad they do so well for you. I haven’t tried this method for storing, I have only done the fall dividing and Saran Wrap method (which worked really good but was rather laborious). Hope you’re doing good! 😊

Hi Steph! I think you will like this method. I tried it last year and the tuber clumps came out just slightly shriveled up. Instead vermiculate or pine shavings, I am using butcher's paper and a bit of fungicide dust on the dry clumps before i stored them away in cardboard boxes in the garage. Good luck!

I used sawdust in cardboard boxes last year, and had mixed success. Will try again this year and see how it goes.

Good morning, I gave up on dahlias but am interested in what other gardeners grow. Have you considered using a storage container that is not airtight? I hear other TH-camrs mention using cardboard or burlap-lined bulb crates. Best of luck, looking forward to seeing your successful garden next year.

Hey! I purchased aspen bedding from Amazon! I tried this method but they dried up my dahlia tubers. But i think it depends on where you store them. I do peat moss/ vermiculite and pine shavings on top. Also i stored a few in plastic wrap that ended up falling off the clumps as single tubers. Good luck!

This was my first time trying to overwinter my dahlias. I just used potting soil. I don't have that many to store. Hope this method works out for you. Bonny

I live in Zone 8 so I can leave my tubers in the ground during winter.

I live in zone 8 too, but our winter is super wet, so mine 2 season ago never came back (luckily it's only 6 of them.) Dug mine out last fall, and they look so good! Tubers are too expensive to play by ear, I must protect them.
