OH NO! the tuber you are cutting at 7:03, has leaf Gall. Also, if a tuber gets sliced off at the end, its still good. Its just if the neck breaks seperating the tuber from the crown. Then the tuber is not going to grow anything and you can dispose. But i have snipped the ends off of tubers to see how the inside is, and if there is no rot and the flesh looks good, just let it cure for a day and its fine! It is still enough energy stored in the rest of the tuber that remains to feed next years growth. :)
Yes, I noticed this, it's a very bad disease easily spread by cutting tools and sucking insects. I had one such very badly infected tuber when digging this autumn's dahlias, I immediately tossed in the household trash! I had a sizeable collection years ago the disease had spread through before I had realized what I was dealing with, I had to discard the entire lot :(
I don't know if anyone has mentioned, though at the 6:00 mark of your informative video, that particular dahlia has developed a proliferation of new shoots and appears to be infected with leafy gall disease. Unfortunately, such tubers should be removed and disposed of, as this is a disease that can spread to other dahlias via pruners and other tools, possibly even by sucking insects. Years ago, when I had grown a sizable dahlia collection, the disease had been transmitted to most of my dahlias before I had even known what I was dealing with. I'm now again building up a collection and found one such diseased tuber this fall, to the middle of the hot compost pile it had gone! I very much enjoy your videos and plant suggestions !!

When digging my tubers this autumn, I came across one with very bad leafy gall, it was immediately placed in a plastic bag and into the trash! Tubers showing this disease will begin having a hard time producing normal shoot and top growth development. 😪

Its not that hard to do a simple search on Google for "splitting and storing dahlia tubers" She is learning about the tubers as she goes along and I'm sure she's only just learned about the eyes this past year.

Lol-I’m 68 and I couldn’t do any of this is I didn’t pace myself! I love 💕 every moment of it though. Loved having my hands on the dirt and planting things since childhood!

Dahlias are so worth the extra work! They bloom endlessly from June to hard frost. Mine actually had a hard frost and are still blooming. I love the variety of beautiful colors to choose from.
Laura, Thank you so much for informative video. So labor intensive that's why I shied away from tubers for years. A few years back I decided to buy some Dahlias from Home Depot and have had them in a raised bed and have never lifted them at the end of the season. I have been blessed every year with beautiful flowers , I guess I got lucky?
I have watched tons of videos about digging dahlias. You certainly made this project understandable. I always dig my dahlias and some years they shrivel and some years they don't. Storing them in leaves has been the most successful for me.
You can keep the tubers that have snapped off on the ends😊 Just recut the end (to make sure it’s not rotting) and then dip in cinnamon (anti-fungal). I actually cut the ends off all my tubers to check for rot and then dip in cinnamon.
I overwintered dahlias for the first time last year. Thank you for all the encouragement that gave me the courage to try all sorts of new things in my landscape! Dahlias are so beautiful, and I had always been intimidated by them...
Oh perfect! I planted Dahlias for the first time this year! Just a handful as an experiment, but they flourished beautifully here and produced many stunning blooms Laura! Soon they will need to be brought up and stored for winter here in the Southeast! So THANK YOU SO MUCH Laura!!! I'm very excited to do this right!!
My favorite way to store tubers is to divide in the fall and wrap each tuber in shrink wrap, it takes a little time BUT I don’t loose half my tubers from drying out and it takes up very little storage space. Then I put each variety in a plastic grocery bag and put them in a box in the basement. This method is suggested by the dahlia society and it works!!!
I was quite amazed that this method worked as well - thinking that they would rot, but it actually holds the moisture to keep them from drying out. Important that you wrap each one separately. Two years ago I lost more than half my tubers from drying out and found this method. Don’t try Saran Wrap, it’s harder to use than shrink wrap, you have more control.
@@helenkoulouridis8001 Hi Helen, Shrink wrap can be a plastic wrap placed around a pallet for packing or what I use is Saran Wrap a clingy plastic on a roll used at home to cover left over food before it goes into a refrigerator.

felling the soil with bare hands lets you know how good it is. helping my dad with the garden gave me a love for the soil. I walked bare foot behind the garden tiller the soil felt like velvet and the memories of working with Dad are precious
I didn’t rinse my tubers when I dug them up. Most of the soil fell off when I pulled them. I hope they’ll be ok 🥺. They’re dry and already stored so 🤞🏾

Laura, that wind sure is howling outside, take care and stay safe while digging those dahlia tubers. A pair of clear wrap-around safety glasses might help keep blowing soil out of your eyes. I store my canna tubers the same way as you store dahlias, except I usually store them in sand or wood shavings. It's been a long time since I've planted dahlias, so I appreciated the refresher on how to get them ready for storage. I always enjoy your videos! You accomplish more in one day than I do in a week, and I'm not pregnant! 💕 💪 💕 👏👏 ~Margie

Laura you make EVERYTHING you do look so easy. I know you have a lot of experience. I know you have your videos edited to make it look earierish. And i know experience also brings organization and/or the knowledge on what you will need and what you need to do. Either way you still break it all down or as i say a lot dumb it down for people who have never gardened at all feel like they could accomplish it as well. One of the most important and the awesomest thing is you are honest about your fails. That helps us all . Makes you incredibly trustworthy and real. Thank you for this! I bought my very first Dahlia at a farmers market this spring and I cannot believe it…it’s bloomed since Spring and still going strong! Tomorrow is the first day of Fall and still beautiful! Can’t wait to preserve it for next year! Thank you again…and I am just like you…I need to see and see again to learn.
Wow! And I thought Illinois prairie weather was crazy bipolar....I can’t believe the wind and sudden temp changes you all have! I grow just a few dahlias and I just dig mine up....shake most of the dirt off....throw them in a large zip lock bag that is labeled. I leave the bag open on top. Then set the bags in a large plastic container....with the lid left off...and store them in my cool basement. I have never had an issue with them not surviving. Thanks for showing us the correct way to do it. I was so envious of your beautiful dahlia bouquets!!! Happy gardening!
This is always a bittersweet time of year. It’s sad seeing the dahlias all killed back but the holidays are nearly here! Have you ever tried propagating dahlias by cutting? I think it would be interesting to see you pull one of the tubers out in late winter and plant it up in the plant room to get some nice cuttings. Theoretically every rooted cutting should produce a new tuber over the growing season!
Ashley Yorke Hopefully Laura will make a video on it but if not propagating dahlias from stem cuttings is super easy! I recommend taking your tubers out of storage and planting them in containers indoors in about March (depending on your climate) and then in April the stems should be about 8-10 inches tall (dahlias tend to grow quite fast). At this point you can take 3-4 inch cuttings and root them in perlite. Once they’ve formed roots you can move them to potting soil and just like that you have more plants! The mother plant will still bloom like normal and all of the cuttings will bloom and form full size tubers by the end of the season. Good luck! ☺️
i love a new slate of ground, feels relieving and refreshing to see bare at the end of the season, then ill want fullness at the end of the cold season lol and the cycle continues
First off I want to thank you for always bringing Your authentic and genuine personality to this world. I am truly grateful to have your knowledge and look forward to every new video. I am a rookie gardener and you have been such an amazing mentor. I dug up my tubers when we had our first big frost a couple weeks ago. I let them dry for 24 hours then put in a cardboard box with some paper on the bottom and wood shavings. I went out to check them this morning after I saw your video posted. I noticed a couple of tubers are starting to look shriveled. They are in our mudroom and I have watched the temperature which stays around 40-56 degrees. I lost them already!!?? 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Bummer. I wish I searched for this video sooner. I’m new to gardening and someone gave me some dahlia roots last week. I kept them in the pail for a week because I didn’t have time to run to the store. Now I’m realizing that the roots need to be rinsed and dried and then packed away. The roots at the top of the pail are dry and wrinkly now, but the ones further down are still good. I’m rinsing them today and letting them dry overnight for packing tomorrow. I hope mine will survive the winter. Wish me luck!
I usually let mine desiccate (I put them in a box without washing the soil away, I just remove as much as I can and let it dry on the tubers, then cover the box with some frost cloth) over the winter and plant them back in the spring. I have never lost any of them. They micht look absolutely terrible in the spring but they are tough cookies!
I grow my dahlias in pots then just throw the pots in my attached garage for the winter which doesn't freeze. Do the same with cannas and elephant ears.
I may try this method this year Last year i rinsed, used vermiculite and boxes in attached garage . I think that was still a bit too dry.... did you leave the dahlias in the actual soil? Or take them out of soil and then place in pots, THx!
ah crap i forgot to bring my Canna's in and it's already been 20 for about a week... I so want to blame getting a puppy in the fall but that seems like a lame excuse after watching this video knowing that Laura is pregnant and had 200 + to do and I only had like 4 pots! LOL oops
Ditto on the needing to see something done over and over. There are always unexpected variables and it helps me so much to see people do this. I have just one dahlia and I'm so anxious that it will die over the winter once I store it. Watching different videos helps because everyone has little bits of extra advice to consider. I dont rinse the tubers at all, to avoid any moisture. Just check the tubers by pressing to find the rotted ones. And I cover them in old blankets, it work just fine. No sand or shaving or vermiculite, but this really depend on the place of storage. I put mine on the floor of root cellar, not heated, no freezing.

I have ONE dahlia to dig. LOL! But it's gorgeous, given to me from a sweet friend. I saved shredded paper in a box (from work) and am wondering if I can store the tubers in the shredded paper. ??

Start small. A handful; five or less. Her scale would be overwhelming to most gardeners but remember, she's getting paid to garden (on her own property, no less).

Thanks for this video. I really needed it. When you check on them once a month, do you pull EVERY individual bunch of tubers and inspect it, or just check the general moisture content of each container and watch for obvious stuff, like bad smell?? It seems like so much work to inspect every single tuber once a month and then repack them all.

Hello from Australia, I bought 2 dahlias last summer, but never got around to putting them in the ground so they died, so i thought, and was very upset with myself, so i was cleaning the back yard last week and thought just get rid of them and started pulling them out from their pots and realised they have tubers, oh my god was i happy😁 so i left them in the pots, so now i know what to do with them, thank you so much 👍❤😊
Best way to deal with tubers like this is simply don’t plant them! My #1 gardening rule: if they’re not hardy in my climate, they don’t belong in my garden. But those were some beautiful dahlias and if you’re really into all that work, have at it!

Oh perfect! I planted Dahlias for the first time this year! Just a handful as an experiment, but they flourished beautifully here and produced many stunning blooms Laura! My favorite way to store tubers is to divide in the fall and wrap each tuber in shrink wrap, it takes a little time BUT I don’t loose half my tubers from drying out and it takes up very little storage space. Then I put each variety in a plastic grocery bag and put them in a box in the basement. This method is suggested by the dahlia society and it works!!!
How do the tubers breathe within all that plastic? And also? Plastic?
I was quite amazed that this method worked as well - thinking that they would rot, but it actually holds the moisture to keep them from drying out. Important that you wrap each one separately. Two years ago I lost more than half my tubers from drying out and found this method. Don’t try Saran Wrap, it’s harder to use than shrink wrap, you have more control.
I read the same from the Dahlia Society. It's a great process and less space.
What is shrink rap? I haven't heard of that before. I live in Cardiff uk
@@helenkoulouridis8001 Hi Helen, Shrink wrap can be a plastic wrap placed around a pallet for packing or what I use is Saran Wrap a clingy plastic on a roll used at home to cover left over food before it goes into a refrigerator.

felling the soil with bare hands lets you know how good it is. helping my dad with the garden gave me a love for the soil. I walked bare foot behind the garden tiller the soil felt like velvet and the memories of working with Dad are precious
I didn’t rinse my tubers when I dug them up. Most of the soil fell off when I pulled them. I hope they’ll be ok 🥺. They’re dry and already stored so 🤞🏾
I dont rinse mine and they make it just fine🙂

Laura, that wind sure is howling outside, take care and stay safe while digging those dahlia tubers. A pair of clear wrap-around safety glasses might help keep blowing soil out of your eyes. I store my canna tubers the same way as you store dahlias, except I usually store them in sand or wood shavings. It's been a long time since I've planted dahlias, so I appreciated the refresher on how to get them ready for storage. I always enjoy your videos! Laura you make EVERYTHING you do look so easy. I know you have a lot of experience. I know you have your videos edited to make it look earierish. And i know experience also brings organization and/or the knowledge on what you will need and what you need to do. Either way you still break it all down or as i say a lot dumb it down for people who have never gardened at all feel like they could accomplish it as well. One of the most important and the awesomest thing is you are honest about your fails. That helps us all . Makes you incredibly trustworthy and real. Wow! And I thought Illinois prairie weather was crazy bipolar....I can’t believe the wind and sudden temp changes you all have! I grow just a few dahlias and I just dig mine up....shake most of the dirt off....throw them in a large zip lock bag that is labeled. I leave the bag open on top. Then set the bags in a large plastic container....with the lid left off...and store them in my cool basement. I have never had an issue with them not surviving. Thanks for showing us the correct way to do it. I was so envious of your beautiful dahlia bouquets!!! Happy gardening!
This is always a bittersweet time of year. It’s sad seeing the dahlias all killed back but the holidays are nearly here! Have you ever tried propagating dahlias by cutting? I think it would be interesting to see you pull one of the tubers out in late winter and plant it up in the plant room to get some nice cuttings. Theoretically every rooted cutting should produce a new tuber over the growing season!

Ashley Yorke Hopefully Laura will make a video on it but if not propagating dahlias from stem cuttings is super easy! I recommend taking your tubers out of storage and planting them in containers indoors in about March (depending on your climate) and then in April the stems should be about 8-10 inches tall (dahlias tend to grow quite fast). At this point you can take 3-4 inch cuttings and root them in perlite. Once they’ve formed roots you can move them to potting soil and just like that you have more plants! The mother plant will still bloom like normal and all of the cuttings will bloom and form full size tubers by the end of the season. Good luck! ☺️

I dug up my tubers when we had our first big frost a couple weeks ago. I let them dry for 24 hours then put in a cardboard box with some paper on the bottom and wood shavings. I went out to check them this morning after I saw your video posted. I noticed a couple of tubers are starting to look shriveled. They are in our mudroom and I have watched the temperature which stays around 40-56 degrees. I lost them already!!?? 🤦♀️🤦♀️

Bummer. I wish I searched for this video sooner. I’m new to gardening and someone gave me some dahlia roots last week. I kept them in the pail for a week because I didn’t have time to run to the store. Now I’m realizing that the roots need to be rinsed and dried and then packed away. The roots at the top of the pail are dry and wrinkly now, but the ones further down are still good. I’m rinsing them today and letting them dry overnight for packing tomorrow. I hope mine will survive the winter. Wish me luck!
I usually let mine desiccate (I put them in a box without washing the soil away, I just remove as much as I can and let it dry on the tubers, then cover the box with some frost cloth) over the winter and plant them back in the spring. I have never lost any of them. They micht look absolutely terrible in the spring but they are tough cookies!
I enjoy watching professionals, who have learned or been trained correctly. By dahlias, see ya next spring. You are a credit to our industry.
I grow my dahlias in pots then just throw the pots in my attached garage for the winter which doesn't freeze. Do the same with cannas and elephant ears.

Last year i rinsed, used vermiculite and boxes in attached garage . I think that was still a bit too dry.... did you leave the dahlias in the actual soil? Or take them out of soil and then place in pots, THx!
I do this with elephant ears. Same plants for at least 10 years.
Like Laura said though, it depends on your climate's humidity whether or not that method will work for dahlias.

ah crap i forgot to bring my Canna's in and it's already been 20 for about a week... I so want to blame getting a puppy in the fall but that seems like a lame excuse after watching this video knowing that Laura is pregnant and had 200 + to do and I only had like 4 pots! LOL oops
Ditto on the needing to see something done over and over. There are always unexpected variables and it helps me so much to see people do this. I have just one dahlia and I'm so anxious that it will die over the winter once I store it. Watching different videos helps because everyone has little bits of extra advice to consider. I dont rinse the tubers at all, to avoid any moisture. Just check the tubers by pressing to find the rotted ones. And I cover them in old blankets, it work just fine. No sand or shaving or vermiculite, but this really depend on the place of storage. I put mine on the floor of root cellar, not heated, no freezing.

Start small. A handful; five or less. Her scale would be overwhelming to most gardeners but remember, she's getting paid to garden (on her own property, no less).

Thanks for this video. I really needed it. When you check on them once a month, do you pull EVERY individual bunch of tubers and inspect it, or just check the general moisture content of each container and watch for obvious stuff, like bad smell?? It seems like so much work to inspect every single tuber once a month and then repack them all.
So don't grow hundreds, like Laura, lol. Try three or four.

why do you have to moist the vermiculite? shouldn't it be completly dry? and if it's moist, won't it cause the tubers to rot?

Some Growers will add a little fungicide to the mix just in case a fungus would attack the bulbs.
Hello from Australia, I bought 2 dahlias last summer, but never got around to putting them in the ground so they died, so i thought, and was very upset with myself, so i was cleaning the back yard last week and thought just get rid of them and started pulling them out from their pots and realised they have tubers, oh my god was i happy😁 so i left them in the pots, so now i know what to do with them, thank you so much 👍❤😊
Best way to deal with tubers like this is simply don’t plant them! My #1 gardening rule: if they’re not hardy in my climate, they don’t belong in my garden. But those were some beautiful dahlias and if you’re really into all that work, have at it!
Like she said, you CAN leave them in the ground (with a thick mulch and maybe a cover), but it's a little riskier, and you can't divide them
