  • Garden Gals and Guys, in today's video I'm showing you how I'm starting my Iceland Poppies and Pansies in soil blocks this year. I had a great year last year with Iceland Poppies, which I started in a cell tray, but this year I'd like to try soil blocking, so we'll see how it goes. I'm also giving you a heads up on what's next on my seed starting agenda as the season ramps up here in Zone 5B/6A! Lastly, a quick look at my Lisianthus, which haven't germinated yet and have suffered a little bit from me using some different seed starting material, but I'm hoping I can still pull them off this year...because they're my favorite!
    Please comment below and let me know if you've used soil blocks before for Iceland Poppies and what your results were, as well as, what's going on in your seed starting world!
    If you're interested in how I sowed Iceland Poppies last year in cell trays, here is that video: • Sowing Iceland Poppies...
    If you're interested in how I planted them out in my raised beds last year, here is that video: • Planting Iceland Poppi...
    Thanks for watching! Happy Planting!

    My lisianthus started germinating in slightly more than 2 weeks, but some of the seeds took their time! Some were even germinating after 3-4 weeks, so don't give up yet! I started them in the long row tray which are relatively shallow, but some roots were coming out from the drainage holes even though most of the lizzies only had their first true leaves, so I potted them on. The er, biggest (ha!) of them went into a 36 cell tray, and the rest into a 72 cell tray. An experiment to see which would work better for when I plant out finally.
    I'm glad to follow you coz I'm in 5b and my frost date is a couple weeks after yours, so I can follow along with you without feeling like I'm late. :) Thank you again, I'm very new to flower starting, so glad for your vids. I'll start my poppies within the next couple of weeks. Will put the bells of ireland into the fridge, thx for that note.
    For poppies, I have iceland, breadseed and california poppies, do any of them need to be chilled in the fridge?

      I've seen people start them that way as well...I potted them up last year into cell trays and they did well for me! Glad my vids are helpful...it works out you have a little time buffer. I plead my ignorance on breadseed and california poppies because I haven't had good luck growing either. For Iceland poppies I think you can put them into the fridge, but I have not. I don't think I did last year either.

    I did champagne bubbles last year and I only had one germinate out of maybe 10 but it made its way into my garden and bloomed in the spring and then again in the fall. This year I’m trying the Iceland 'Colibri Dolce Vita mix which is pink, peach, and cream colors and I had wonderful germination. Can’t wait for them! ❤

    Planted the same poppies and same violas yesterday in soil blocks. First time for me for both of them. Still waiting for my lissies from Geoseeds 😖 sent my order in Feb 4. They said they should be shipping this week. Fingers crossed. As far as documenting planting, my OCD was in overdrive this weekend and made a killer spreadsheet!! Lol. Thanks for your video! Love following!!

      Lol isn't that funny - we're right on the same schedule! Oh man, that's disappointing about Geo Seeds! That's a LONG wait, especially for Lissies. Oh well...get them in asap and you'll be okay! Love the spreadsheet idea...any notes are a huge positive! Thank you, Cherie!

    Try sieving your chunky soil mix, then adding a bit of peat or cocunut coir if needed to ensure the mixture binds together.

      Yeah, that would definitely help.

    Don't give up on the lissies. My first sowing was in Berger 2 seed starting formula which doesn't contain nutrients. I decided to try a dozen seeds in Fox Farms Ocean Forest, and they took two weeks longer to germinate. Happy ending, the FF are now slightly larger (still tiny) but more robust than the starting mix with light supplemental nutrients. I'm not a soil block gal but I do like dense planting in seed trays. Keep feeling good :) !!

      Oh Lisa, I'm so glad you shared this with me! It makes me feel better. I DID see some germination today, so I'm thrilled about that. Going to give them some more time too. Glad they are growing for you as well! :)

      @@TinysGarden yes they can be slower to germinate! I have a video "10 Tips for Growing Lisianthus" that may help you out! I always have GREAT luck with them!

    The poppies I left in the ground overwintered! It’s been such a warm winter in Chicago!
    Some leaves did make their way around them but mostly exposed and they still made it. Waiting to see if they’ll bloom.

      Hi Marlene! That’s amazing! Yes, it’s been eerily warm 🥴 That’ll be interesting to see if they bloom. Crossing my fingers for you! Good luck with your season! 😃

    I have Lisianthus growing, I sowed them January 14. I had great luck last year when I started them on Jan. 11th so I just stick to that date or close to it. I have Mahogany Splendor, Black Devil pansies, rosemary, and will try Eucalyptus this late lol.

      @TinysGarden  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exciting times! Yes, I prefer to start in January! I do have some germinating now. I’m not sure it’ll be the same show as last year, but should at least have some. All those sound amazing. I heard Eucalyptus is slooooooooowwwww…good luck! 😀

    I worked with my tiniest seeds by far this year, Russian statice and lobelia! They are like microscopic, smaller than petunia seeds 🤪 The lobelia has sprouted so far though! Also my Floret seeds came in the mail today!!! 😭❤️

    Steph! I always seem to hop on you tube and catch u right after u post! Awesome! I’m growing the exact same pansies too! I’m exited for the frizzle sizzles! I also got the mini tapestry kind!
    I hope your Lisi’s germinate!
    I tried Icelandic Poppies last year with zero success! That was in soil blocks but I didn’t put them in cooler temps!
    Sweet peas do rock in 2” soil blocks!! I’ve done them that way last year and this and they’re fantastic! I had so many flowers from my sweet peas last season, they rocked.
    You’re doing awesome!

      Hi Alli! Thank you! I DID find some of my Lissies have germinated this morning, so not all hope is lost! We'll see how the Icelandic Poppies do for me in soil blocks...we'll have to wait and see. Yes, the sweet peas in soil blocks is awesome! I may try direct sowing them to save time and energy this year...we'll see!

    For me violas in doors give me a hard time. I sprinkle seeds for fillers OMG right now I have thousands in my backyard pots with my Lillie's. Have several growing in the cracks on the patio. When they get bigger I dig them out give neighbors gifts 😅😅😅. I'm growing seed starts in 5x5 trays this year

      My pleasure! I believe I ordered mine from Lisa Mason Ziegler’s website. The gardener’s workshop. I think I got the kit. If you look back in my past videos, I unbox them and say the specifics. Pregnancy brain is happening right now, but I know I made a video about it. I hope it’s helpful!

    I actually decided to direct sow my sweet peas this year. I don't presoak no matter how i start them.
    Started them feb 1st.
    Today i noticed the whole row i planted along the trellis are indeed germinated.

    I never use a heat mat to germinate lizzies. My grow room stays around 65 to 69 degrees. I don't use any heat mats for anything.

    Planted 680 seeds in soil blocks today, made with Fort Vee compost. My salvia, cleome and snapdragons are done. I use less water when hydrating the trays daily and don’t ever need to drain it. Could you use a turkey baster to remove the excess water?

    • @TinysGarden
      @TinysGarden  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I think I'm heavy handed on the water! The turkey baster is a BRILLIANT idea though - thank you! I'm going to try using a little less and see how that goes. Fabulous work getting all those seeds planted! You must feel very accomplished!

    I have always germinated my pansies in darkness???

    • @TinysGarden
      @TinysGarden  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! They do like to be covered - that’s why I made sure to cover them and add a heavy layer of vermiculite. You could also just place them in a place that is dark.

    No reason the lizzies shouldn't germinate in that potting soil. Lizzies can take more then 14 days to germinate.
