I like the usage of fake here, rather than saying things were messed up or off. Using it in situations where people are lying or unable to see reality/ the truth, saying shit got fake is a good way to sum it up. I'mma use that now.

When this chapter began Dutch’s old love killed his current one molly
Then grimahaw his old love was killed by his new “love” Micah
I felt so sad when that bold woman miss Grimshaw died for standing up for the right thing and was the first to point her gun at Micah or only one to do so after Arthur, almost everyone suspected Micah being a rat, it was Grimshaw who only needed someone to start this up which thanks to Arthur she stood up, she knew it was Micah who broke the camp donation box, after Hosea dying with John and Arthur being drifted away from Dutch there was no one left to save Dutch , Van der linde never listened to anyone after that when Micah further took advantage of it, Grimshaw at least tries, on occasion she tried her best to confront Dutch to reason with him only to be destroyed by the confused harsh words of Dutch, that woman never got the credit she deserves. She lived by the rules of Dutch Van Der Linde gang and always had the camp organized, took care of all the girls and tried to discipline and stood for her girls like miss Tilly when needed. Iam glad Charles went back there to give her a proper burial. Beautiful woman that didn't deserve such a bad end.

But at the end of the game, he prefers to leave John to death for a feller he knows only for 6 months or something like that... that proves that Dutch is not as strong as he seems emotionaly. He is one of my favourite character of all time but you can't say that he didn't betraye john's family and arthur at the end of the game.
At the End Poor Arthur don't make it but Arthur has a choice to get John to safety or go back for the money

People say if Hosea was alive then everything would be great again, however I noticed his last few appearances with Dutch haven't gone so good, even Hosea couldn't get Dutch to the right thing and stop Dutch from killing Bronte remember what Hosea said "you'll damn us all" he was right.
Ali Oran my buddy pointed out it was most likely the concussion he got during the trolley station robbery that caused him to come undone. My thinking it was a combination of the head injury and Dutch just showing his true colors.
It's a perfect storm of unfortunate events that drove Dutch down this path, I suppose.
The botched jobs, the constant moving East into the ocean, the concussion (or something worse that flipped a switch in that moment), Guarma, Pinkertons, Cornwall, Hosea, etc. The guy was gonna break eventually, and it just so happens he broke the gang with him.
Edit: Also forgot to mention the constant flow of bad decisions from our "Favorite" Rat into his ear canal
Exactly. I really paid attention to the head injury thing during the mission, it was mentioned 2 or 3 times but never since. Dutch had started to unravel before that, and later in the game characters question whether Dutch ever was good or simply started to show his true colours. I think they threw the concussion in to make the debate more complicated than what Arthur says to Sadie at the end about Dutch always being that way. A 3rd prequel would confirm, I suppose, but I also like that for now the question is left open. Bravo to Rockstar for writing the fantastically complex character that is Dutch!
I think Hosea just delayed the inevitable. Even at the very beginning Dutch drops little hints here and there that he’s paranoid about Arthur in the first chapter I remember walking around camp and out of no where Dutch said something along the line of your gonna betray me Arthur

What's so difficult to understand? There's a scripted dialog that's part of the story and then the player presses the talk button so a random dialog starts. It's not a god damn movie.

It starts way earlier than even this. Basically from the begining of the game John is acting distant and begining to see through Dutch which is probably why Dutch turned on him so viciously because John was the first person he lost control over. Even to the end he never lost his hold over Hosea or Arthur but he lost John and he couldn't stand that.
It's even more annoying because at the begining of the game Dutch tries to get John to accept jack as his son but once he actually does he's berating him for it
At the beginning John is garbage and tries to fuk Kieran telling her he's not actually married to Abigail, arthur had to spend time with jack
This!!! I'm surprised some people think Dutch hated John because he has a family and Dutch isn't lol. Like he cares... He's very vampiric and so to see someone living off without needing him much but doing it because their whim told to, and not loyalty, or code like Arthur, he gets madly obsessives that John ratted them or whatever element he can find to use against him. He even at one point tells him if he wanted to be the GENERAL, he should calm down, because he does not have the grit. It was in the final chapter. Like he thought blatantly that John was rising in independence and doubt that he is aiming at General... he's leader material, so had to destroy him that way.

I don’t think Dutch has every wanted that kind of life though. I think he hates John because John has something to be loyal to other than Dutch, where the rest of the gang only has Dutch. He wanted blind loyalty from people that’s why he picked people off the streets who had no one else. John ended up having something else to be loyal to.

People misinterpret this. This is not a descent into madness, this is him showing his true colours. Dutch had always been a bastard, it's just that Hosea reigned in his worst qualities, but even he was failing. Even without Hosea dying, things would've turned out this way, just slower.

Yeah, there just so much dialog that you need a TH-cam channel just to justify the hours and hours you gotta be walking around the camp mostly hearing shit like "I should be getting on now" or "Calm down, I'm only needling ya" always at a very unnatural point in time to say them. Until eventually I guess enough time passes on to allow you to hear a new piece of camp dialog. Everytime I think that they have to have heard and uploaded everything, something I haven't heard comes up in my feed. Such a good game.

God, when Dutch yells at John. That conversation hurts. After all the things they've been through, and the whole gang is just falling apart at the seams. This game actually made me feel true empathy for the characters.
Dutch just wants control. He says it himself "let me do the thinking" he thinks himself above everyone else.

And that right there sums up Dutch as a man. All he wanted was control, and he wanted nobody questioning him. But when he saw John and Arthur openly questioning him, he realized he was losing control, and began to act viciously toward them.
He did not truly care about them. He merely was using them for his own purposes. That's a sign of someone who lives by the "survival of the fittest mindset:
"The can't forge meaningful friendships. Forget friendships, many cant even make meaningful relationships with siblings. Since people who live by this theory always have to be better than the crowd, anyone part of it is a competition. And because of this, no one can be a true a friend. Most people they know are only accomplices that can come in handy for the pursuit of goals."
He even raised them to be his ideal pawns. People say Dutch went crazy, but he didn't. He had always been evil since young adulthood.
The thing was his arguement didn't hold up because all kinds of people listened to Dutch and they weren't fine. Hosea, Lenny, Sean, Kieran, Molly just to name a few. Dutch was losing control because his silver tongued lies were falling apart. Trelawney and Reverend saw fit to leave. And Arthur and John were in no way trying to be traitors. I truly think they loved Dutch. He was just becoming unhinged by Micah's influence. And Arthur and John woke up.

Darkadri I agree, plus somewhere in the game he thought Abigail was "Poisoning" john against him and the reason I think he left him to die was to spit arthur because he "insists" to let john leave with his family here you can see he was quite selfish when he said the gang comes first what he actually means is he comes first not johns family plus another thing is he was just simply insane he thought john was a Pinkerton spy because micah's snake tongue. But these are just my thoughts, and Sorry for my crappy English I'm a native one but I just suck at it.

@@MegasXRL That's true. Milton did say that when Arthur and the rest got out of Guarma, Micah was taken by the Pinkertons and Micah talked. The betrayal and everything that happened in Chapter 6 kind of explains how the Pinkertons managed to know where they were exactly .As for that bank job, Bronte before his death did say that agents were coming for them so my guess is Bronte had already informed the Pinkertons that Dutch and the rest were in Saint Denis before Dutch killed him. In the end, it was Dutch's stupid revenge that got Hosea and Lenny killed.

John was loyal for 15 years, not a 'few' years.
John was born in 1873 and he joined the gang when he was 12 so by 1899 he'd been with the gang for about 14 years.

The one problem with Dutch is that he HATES people who are doubting him or are always questioning his orders. That’s why he always sided with Micah during the end because Micah always followed Dutch no matter what. But Little did he know Micah was just sucking on Dutch’s blood for the Pinkertons.

John was my favorite RDR character til Arthur came about. They’re both however my favorites.
No they're not. You're just having trouble coming to terms with the unforseen surprise that Arthur is actually better than John Marston. I felt pissed when they announced I'd be playing with some guy named "Not John Marston". And it only strengthened my view of John being the best character of all time. New dude was only gonna make me want John more. Now beating the game is not cool because they force me to play with some guy named "Not Arthur Morgan". Both great, but Arthur is definitely better. Mostly due to Arthur's story coming 8 years later and gaming being so much more advanced. But also because without Arthur, even if John managed to survive, he'd be a shit head. Arthur changed John for the better. It's not John's character in RDR2 anyone cares for. It's who he became after all of that.

I really loved seeing how things started to go downhill between John and Dutch, Bill and Javier. Well "Love". Kinda bittesweet obviously, but I was curious of how things would go that lead to the stuff in the first game.
Man, I feel like I know Arthur and John, they're so endearing characters. This game is an absolute stab to the heart.
I can't believe I missed these dialogues in all that time I spent in the camp.
The problem is by the time you hear dioliuge you gotta walk like on mile over to the noise , since you can freaking run for whatever reason , and then by that point it's already done , like I'll be changing clothes and I'll hear a scene go on it's pretty annoying

You'd be forgiven, Shady Belle camp near the end of chapter 4 and Beaver's Hollow camp from all of the chapter 6 was nothing but pure depression.

2:50 it's real subtle but when Dutch tells at him that he doesn't have the grit, John actually just slightly leans forward and tells back growling out his own retort. Dutch slightly leans back and changes tactic, reasoning out the logic behind how he feels instead of screaming insults. This is awesome cuz while the tone and words tell half the story the body language tell the other half. Dutch is trying to intimidate John into submission, John doesn't take it and bites back, and it throws Dutch for a second because suddenly for that second John was the intimidating one. Then there's Arthur who stands up too, and suddenly Dutch's position is threatened even if that's not how they meant it. Class A Narcissist and Gaslighting example here. Dang, the details lol. I love this game. Feel bad for the boys and wish the good people got better than they did, but a lot of love went into this game

Dutch was always an egomaniac. He was with the gang ONLY when they believed in him. When they kept it real and pointed out his mistakes he betrayed them one after the other.
Recall throughout the story Dutch says things like "I.... I mean... The gang needs money....."
He clung to Micah because he still fed his ego and went with all his dumb shit; and Dutch being the egomaniac couldn't help himself.
To Micah's credit, he saw that in dutch and played him like a fiddle. He stroked Dutch's ego and turned him against his own gang who was like family.
People really blame Micah too much. Was Micah a monster? No doubt. But so was Dutch. Even before the events of the game, in Blackwater, when Dutch killed an innocent girl? And you could argue even before that, Dutch was a monster, molding innocent youngsters Arthur and John to be his ideal subjects.
It's not all Micah's fault. Dutch was always a bastard, he just hid how much of a bastard he was from the gang.
Love how Dutch accuses one of the lifelong members of the gang but never thaught twice about the guy who's only been with them for like 8 months.
It’s because Micah fed Dutch’s ego that he was doing the right thing, while Arthur and John seem like they’re doubting him and not listening to his orders. Which is also due to Micahs crap, he’s also the reason Dutch shot the girl on the black water ferry as Lenny said.

When Arthur was a bit tough on John in the beggining, I wasnt sure how I felt about Arthur, but as the story progressed I really began to see how the dynamic between them worked and my care for both of them grew immensely. Arthur and John are my favorite fictional cowboys, and if they got a Alt Universe gang where they take Hosea's and Dutch's role and successfully adapted into the new world, id be all in.
He was tough on John at the beginning because he felt like he was wasting what he had (a family). Something that Arthur desperately wanted due to his child's death. There's also other hints such as when he drinks with Lenny we see his insecurities about not having a wife. ("No one would have me" or something like that)
I don’t really see Arthur and John ever adapting to the 20th century tbh. Hell, we saw John try and it didn’t end well. Even if they and Hosea had successfully wrestled control of the gang from Dutch, I don’t think they’d have made it much further than the early 1900s. They would definitely be dead or in prison by the 1920s.

I had put aside red dead 1 for a long time to enjoy other games. Hadn't even thought of the Strange Man from Red Dead 1 since noticing that Trelawny looked like the Strange Man. But the moment Dutch says "I know you": Holy. Shit. Shivers went down my spine and the connection to that mission and why the options were so bipolar made sense. Are you going to be the good man, the family man, the honorable man? Or are you going to stay true to a bandit gang of lowlife people that are slowly, bit by bit, going off their rockers?
I think the strange man may be Trelawny, looks like him, and I dont think John ever really talked to Trelawny, thats probably why he didnt remember him.
Dutch went from charismatic anti-hero to slithering con-man, to psychotic mad man. It's an excellent character progression.
When the Odriscolls capture you, after you escape talk to Dutch and Arthur will ask “were you really coming to rescue me?” And Dutch reply’s very sarcastically “of course..... of course.... why wouldn’t I?” 😰
I think Hosea, John and Arthur were like true family to Dutch even in rdr1 when Dutch and John meet again you feel like they have an old friend connection

Hosea was the real father to Arthur and John. If you look at some of the earliest entries in Arthur’s journal he even says that while he loves Dutch, Hosea seemed like more of a father and he loved Hosea more. I thought it was an interesting detail to add. I think it shows why Dutch would get mad with Hosea near the end not just because he would disagree with him but because he was someone that could “in Dutch’s mind” take away the loyalty. That all Dutch wants but not to help his people but to use them. He feeds off blind loyalty that’s why Micah fooled him. He gave Dutch everything he wanted so he liked him and the second John and Arthur questioned Dutch he wanted no more with them and wanted to get rid of them. Dutch had always cared for Dutch and hides behind a fake wall of care for others to help himself seem great to gain blind loyalty. Even Kieran saw it when he said from the other side the gang looked the same as the other he was right. Thanks for coming to my TED TALK.

Arthur had realized it was all a lie anyway. He didnt want/ care about them being there unless they were going to help john. Which is what sadie was doing, and charles was trying to help the reservation that they had wronged. I think arthur would have got lenny out too before that point.

Alot of people speculated that Dutch changed due to the Saint Denis job when he hit his head on the trolley causing some sort of brain trauma and with Micah being so loyal to him and deceiving Dutch was the Cherry on top...
it really goes to show, Dutch was threatened by the thought that anyone could ever have priorities more important than him.

On the first playthrough, Dutch seemed great in the beginning. Second playthrough, you notice he's always been corrupt. He's just more sane.

Never witnessed these conversations. I always felt sorry for old Dutch, losing his mind. But know I'm glad that he failed. I despise him more than I despise Micah. If it weren't for Dutch going crazy, the gang would have been just fine..all these losses. The only two who gave their best for him are getting called snakes.. That's a slap in the face.. a clear break up. John and Arthur should have left that moment!
I never thought I'd see another person say that. Micah seemed too generic for me. Just a typical outlaw. But I always thought Dutch was a lying manipulative snake. From the very beginning, I knew he couldn't be trusted. All of his preaching about "If I could die in their stead, I would." and "You are my son, Arthur". None of it's true. He especially risked the lives of the gang by trusting Angelo Bronte. Dutch is loyal only to himself.

This game was so awesome and well written and the characters were so well developed. After the mission were the trolly you and Dutch use as a getaway and crash it seemed like Dutch never recovered. With mykah whispering in Dutchs ear it seemed like Dutch just slowly unravelled. He couldn't see that Arthur and John were still his sons who wanted to follow him to the ends of the earth but couldn't because they started to see Dutch at his weakest and his decisions were questionable, with Pinkertons slowly gaining on the gang Dutch just couldn't take the pressure. His ego and pride wouldn't let him see it. Dutch needed help and he just trusted the wrong person. And that's what's so frustrating about it. He didnt turn to his "sons" he turned to mykah. And when the truth of mykahs treachery came to be known it was dutchs pride and ego that would let him pick the right side.
Dutch should have never fucked with Angelo Bronte that's the whole reason the Pinkertons were waiting for the Gang if Dutch would have just left him alone then they would have successfully gotten away with the money and they would have went back west to New Austin without worrying about the Pinkertons and Hosea and Lenny would have still been Alive even Hosea himself tells Dutch to leave Angelo Bronte alone cause if they do something to him it's just gonna cause more trouble and that's just exactly what happend...and Also Dutch is so blind he actually thought John was the rat When we all know it was Dutches Fault when he Killed the Famous man named Angello Bronte. things would have been so much different if Dutch Listened to Hosea!!!😞

I went into RDR2 from the perspective of knowing how Dutch ends up in the first game, so i was curious to see if RS would portray him as a tragic figure. But fairly early on in my playthrough i could see the snake oil salesman at work underneath. Manipulative. Megalomaniacal. Narcissistic. This was NOT a man that fancied a soft life on some beach somewhere...and it burns me that he led so many of his flock to slaughter with lies of a better life in such a place.
Dutch's dream was to live forever in a gangsters paradise...his flock of sheep blindly following his every rambunctious whim
The first time I played RDR2 I noticed how manipulative he was from chapter 1 I didn't like him because it was so clear that he was reason behind all of the bad incidents

Pretty sure Dutch has schizophrenia. He shows all the signs of the slow progression slowly into it. The suspicion and anger and the bump to the head made it worse.

Dutch believed John to be the rat. After all John did leave the gang for a while. He was captured alive while the others were killed, and Abigail slipped away during the fray. From Dutch's perspective... everything pointed to John, John was always sort of treated like the weak link.
