Thanks for watching Sean! Good to hear about the colors on the FX3, some folks here have said Sony color is flat or generic...I personally haven't noticed that, I like Sony's color science. To each their own I guess!
I've had and FX3 for a bit and just recently purchased an FX6! Reverse of your experience. I like the shoulder mount-ability of the FX6 and the VND and SDI in/out is really nice. But yeah the FX3 is just a great piece of gear. The IBS is amazing- especially for B-roll.
Oh nice! Congrats! I totally think the FX6 is for a lot of people…just not me. Maybe I’ll start shoulder shooting one day? Cheers and thanks for watching!
Don't sell the FX6. There's more good stuff coming for it soon. You will be able to record BM raw on Blackmagic monitor/recorders out of the FX6 soon, which will open doors for you. Plus you would miss the variable ND. Sell the A7S3 instead (which I have a feeling it's about to be replaced anyway-to be soon followed by the FX3 I'm sure, but maybe not right away, as both the FX3 and FX6 are big sellers for Sony). An FX6/FX3 combination would be a better match anyway. Then, for stills, get some other Sony camera, there are many options-12 mp is not enough for most photography. I bought the A9III and I"m loving it, especially great because of the global shutter. You need at least one camera that you can show up with that looks more pro in some situations. In the news/production business we used to look down on people who showed up with an FX6, but now, with a little rigging, it's more accepted. I have mine rigged for should work. The FX3, even though a very capable camera and more and more popular with productions for TikTok and the like, still looks kind of like a toy to us in the news business. We don't mind it being a second or third camera, but not the principal camera. You should have two comparable cameras always with you anyway, in case one fails. Oh, and thanks for your service.
Ha thanks for watching and the responses! Yes, I do believe in multiple cameras. I have an a7iv for my photography and love it. I did already just sell the FX6 and so now have my a7siii and an FX3. I’m really happy with these three amigos…and yea if the FX6 wasn’t $6k and money was pouring out of my pockets I surely would have kept it…but it just wasn’t for me. Thanks again 🙏 appreciate the support.
If the FX3 had a EVF option it would be the absolute best ! I own the fx3 and a7s3 and def been using the as73 more because of the EVF when I don't want to lug around a monitor which is a must using the fx3 outdoors ..
The whole time I was watching your video, I was saying you needed a FX3. It’s a beast of a camera. I’ve been using it for a year and have no issues. I’ve done commercials, social media videos, and real estate renovations. You will not regret it. The issue with previews on your computer may have to do with the format you are using. I typically shoot slog-3 or Cine EI and still can see previews on the finder window.
Thank you! Yea that’s helpful to hear what you’ve pulled off with the FX3. I mean tbh feature films have been made on it. And yea I’ll look into the preview thing…I’m sure it’s me messing it up haha. 🤣
You ever think about coming over to the FX3 side of things? Maybe run a Cineback/Rigid Pro on it?... and watched till the end and hope you end up with an FX3!
Hahaha yep. I got the FX3 about a week after that video launched. I’m on location filming a Vertical Horizon concert with it right now and it was 100% the right move. Love this thing! Thanks for watching!
@@GravelDriveMedia LFG! Don't know how you have it set up, but the Rigid Pro is a gamechanger and gets it closer to your FX6 setup in weight and ability to mount stuff to it.
the nervous factor is such a real thing, it happens so much on my productions with clients as soon as i pull my fx3 rigged out on them and they hear that record beep the forget the scripts I wrote and start freaking out.
@carlclippedit I don't even tell my subjects when I am rolling. I just let the cameras record continuously and let the edit bay monkeys figure it out in post. They are in Columbia and get paid in bananas. (No offense)
lol I can't trick them for my productions because it's short form productions for brand building so we're controlling the narrative with the scripting. But for off the cuff rambles I deff use your tactic stated and have the editors scrape for gold through an hour ramble.
I own the FX6 and it's perfect for my clients and jobs but I often work on bigger sets with FX9s, Arris, etc. I rent the FX3 all of the time for gimbal shooting and as a B camera for two camera interviews and on split shoots where I will shoot interviews and have an operator whose job it is to go and shoot b-roll. The FX6 is a horrible gimbal camera so I probably need to also get an FX3 and have both. For your clients and your type of shooting, I agree with your decision all of the way, A7 SIII and the FX3 will make a great team. The only thing you're going to miss is the E VND, having to screw on my NISI True Color when using the FX3 or an A7 SIII is a PITA, especially when you have to change lenses often. But IBIS is helpful, the XAVC options are better on the FX3 also. Can't turn off the NR like you can with the FX6 buut that's not usually a big deal for most corporate work.
Dan, thanks for this reply...I think you are a 100% right that I will miss changing VND with the press of a button. Screwing on and off VND filters (and then reaching up to rotate them all the time) is indeed a PITA. Perhaps one day I'll be on sets with FX9, Venices, Arris, Buranos, etc...but Ive never even held one of those! Im a second/third career video/photo guy and currently in cinematography school (online) to try and learn more, so there's always a chance, but for now, I look forward to a smaller, streamlined set up. Thanks again!!!
Modular is always going to be the best! Im only tempted moving for FX6 to RED K-X or If downsizing I’ve loved the FX3 for since its release… but Mk ii can’t be that far away!
I use it the same way as a journalist and have a perfekt workaround without IBIS: In rough situations I use Shutter with 90° and switch stabilization off!! Than with catalyst browse or Gyroflow you will get a perfect gimbal-like image. File Preview is no problem. :) you need some help with your Mac. ;o)
I've been working with the FX3 for a while now and it's my go to for just about everything. I sold my A73 for lighting equipment because I just didn't use it anymore.
FX3. Reasonable choice for what you do and want and I'm not even a big Sony cam fan as I really dispise Sony's convoluted, brainless menues. Still, the FX3 is a very capable and great tool. And I totally get your "drawing attention" argument. I use a Black Magic Ursa Pro, pretty much same size and depending on where I am people really start to be annoying. Worst experience I ever had was the Heavy Metal Festival "Wacken" in Germany. Takes you ten minutes until you are sick of people screaming "Wackeeeen" into the camera. ;)
As someone who shoot RED and on a Ronin 4D, you shouldn’t worry so much about what other people think or say when you’re shooting on a larger rig. That said, if the A7S III and FX3 work for you, more power to you. I also love the Nikon Z6 III for its full frame 6k sensor in a small form factor.
Thanks Mark! Good points. Probably just me over rotating on it, but nonetheless looking forward to smaller form factor. Cheers and thanks for watching!
hi since you know that organic motion with handheld cameras i wanted to know if you think the rolling shutter speed makes a difference for this natural motion? i'm looking between the FX3 sensor (ZVE1) that has faster sensor or the lumix S5ii that has class leading IBIS but slower sensor and they have an upcoming S1H mark ii that is even better than FX3
Thanks for watching! For me, I honestly haven't noticed rolling shutter issues (I don't typically film fast moving things maybe?) so I might be the wrong person to ask. My favorite shots typically have been on my a7siii with IBIS on and an OSS lens. I also don't have the habit of shooting everything in 60fps to smooth stuff out.
@@GravelDriveMedia not really when shooting fast moving things, but like when following someone from behind walking, to have that natural motion that we see in movies when they use asteadycam, is that affected by the sensor readout speed and rolling shutter or not at all. because the FX3 is at 8ms while the S5ii is at 21ms
Man I used to rock a RED and then Canon C series cams. These days it’s Sony a6700 lol. And I tell you what, the footage is still very much good enough for 99% of my clients. And my back is way happier! And my shots have more variety and freedom to them. You’re not on the wrong track.
The FX6 was highly hyped up by youtubers. I let them brainwash me into thinking it was the better option lol. In body stabilization and a downsampled 6k image is better than internal NDs and an old UI. Sending it back and paying that hefty restock fee for an FX3. I hope the FX6 II fixes a lot of the issues.
I spent the summer filming protests downtown montreal. I was using the FX30 with the top handle, mounted on a tripod. That was about the limit the people were willing to handle. If I showed up with an FX6 or anything bigger it would have freaked the people out. Personnally, I will not be going to full frame anytime soon. The problem is that people who are not familiar with cameras think bigger is better. I saw the legacy media out this summer with those massive cameras, mounted on sachtler tripods, they looked ridiculous. Meanwhile the kid with the GH6 is getting a better image, with more dynamic range.
Really good point about using APSC, I know some folks that get absolutely amazing results with crop sensors...and for half the price. Cheers, thanks for watching!
@@GravelDriveMedia the full fram stuff comes mainly from TH-camrs...professionals do not care...it is like "sharpness"...any lens made in the past 80 years is sharp enough...
I had an FX6 for 4 years and it mostly sat in its case while I used the A7Siii for the vast majority of my work. I also dislike the EI shooting modes for Slog. The waveform monitor wasn’t a reliable way to set exposure. Plus the screen is terrible, and ergonomically it’s mediocre at best.
Ooooh, interesting idea. I might just do that. Honestly, because this is a mid-life career change most of my clients have been through my existing network and/or referrals. Getting organic new clients has been somewhat nonexistent other than getting in with some local business to business networking groups. Thanks for watching!
@GravelDrive Wow, my intuition was spot on. I figured that's how you were getting work. That's awesome brother. Looking forward to following your progress.
That’s laziness on my part. If you tap someone’s face on the touchscreen it’ll stay locked on them. Not sure if I had eye AF on either. I had wife and AF Continuous on so it kept jumping from the FX6 to me.
The files are IN the computer?! Haha Owen Wilsons face popped right into my head. As an FX6 user I feel you on all these points. I use the a7siii or FX30 way more because of the first 2 issues. Subscribed.
Maybe you are overthinking. Don´t you have everthing you need? A a7III for the undercover stuff and a fx6 for everthing else. You even could strip down the fx6: small lens, small batterie, no mattebox... Lens IS is more than enogh for that bodysize.... You have already fantastic gear. Just keep it and go on with your nice work :)
Perhaps! If the FX6 wasn’t $6k I’d agree with you that I should just sit with it. For me, it’s not worth the extra cost, I’d rather downgrade and get some money back.
Id just take lff the matte box, handle, vlock. Then you have the best camera for being small. Once you get the FX3 with an ND solution and maybe a monitor or that horrid fake FX6 block.. then it will be bigger and worse. Maybe another A7s.. you cannot beat working in pairs. FX3? not so much.
@@GravelDriveMedia Because it has a hole in that back to look at. that is the king mode for stripped down use (and that is you other camera? too) . Why not two identical cameras which is suprisingly liberating from on set choices to spare part. Ivbe spent year with non matching cameras and having two of the same could be so liberating.
Hi. The problem with the SONY FX6, FX9, and the Burano, is these cameras were designed primarily for ENG Pickup Network TV Commercial Videographers, as these are the main customers who are purchasing these cameras. Except for the Burano and Venice MK II, these cameras have a mainly generic digital video look to what comes out of them. I have never been crazy about the overall colour science that comes out of SONY production cameras. The images look “generic,” with significantly desaturated colour renderings. This type of image is actually desirable in the Broadcast realm, where the images must be “calibrated” for broadcast. Whereas’ in narrative Netflix and Cinema, a nuanced, fat image with wide colour gamut is an absolute requirement. This is why Red and Arri cameras are so preferred. The RedCode RAW Codec is a 16 Bit Colour science which your eyes can clearly see the difference of as compared to the SONY codecs, which are only 10 bit and 12 bit respectively. I think you might be happier with either a SONY Burano or a RED Komodo X, which will give to you much better camera balancing and overall handling than what you get with an FX6. I always thought the FX6 was a compromise camera between an FX9 or for sure the new Burano. The Burano seems to lean more toward a Venice MK II type flexibility, as it has some extra settings allowing either TV Broadcast Presets, or Cinema ones with a superior colour science and yielding a much more saturated image out of camera. There is definitely a little more details in the blacks and the highlights with better highlight roll offs, while the newer, improved Komodo X gives you one incredible image comparable to an Arri Alexa Mini.
Thanks for this response Mark! I’ve never shot with the Reds or Arri cameras…I happen to like the color of the Sonys (most of the time, some times it’s a challenge, but usually that’s my fault with lighting IMO). Perhaps I’ll rent a Komodo for a project to check it out. Thanks again 🙏
I disagree with the "generic video look" coming out of these cameras. Everyone's eyeballs are a little different, but even is S-Cinetone it's pretty good right out of the box. Also you can just bake a LUT into slog3 and you can have any look you want right out of the camera with 10bit and dynamic range protected.
@@stephenf3838 Excuse Me ? Ae you some Kind of SONY Fanboy ? That is an absolutely ridiculous statement ! If you had said almost any other camera, then it would have had some plausibility, but claiming a SONY camera and Arri are on the same level in anything is one step beyond ! Have you compared footage between an Arri Alexa Mini and an FX6 or FX9 ? There is no comparison.

I started using my fx6 without attachment and im enjoying it. No top handle and record audio on the dji wireless mic 2.
Oh yea, I love the DJI Wireless Mic 2 (especially with the Sony hot shoe adapter)!!!
@@GravelDriveMedia yes the dji mic adapter is clutch. Now how can we have a hot shoe without the top handle 😂
the nervous factor is such a real thing, it happens so much on my productions with clients as soon as i pull my fx3 rigged out on them and they hear that record beep the forget the scripts I wrote and start freaking out.
Haha, exactly, the old red light panic!
Try the Nikon Z8/9 if you want to shrink down whist recording 8K/60p. You can still use all your Sony glass.
Ughhhh yea the mkii potential does give me pause!!!
I use it the same way as a journalist and have a perfekt workaround without IBIS: In rough situations I use Shutter with 90° and switch stabilization off!! Than with catalyst browse or Gyroflow you will get a perfect gimbal-like image.
File Preview is no problem. :) you need some help with your Mac. ;o)
Thank you for sharing the camera review. I wish you success with your new business! My wife and I are doing the same 🙏
Thank you! Good luck out there!!!
I've been working with the FX3 for a while now and it's my go to for just about everything. I sold my A73 for lighting equipment because I just didn't use it anymore.
That’s great to hear! I’m looking forward to mine!!!
Dude how do you get your files in the computer? That’s nuts.
🤣 at least one person picked up the Zoolander reference
I can preview the files on windows though. I use quicklook to get that mac space button preview. Sounds like you just dont have the right codecs
Yep, I’m sure it was user error 🤣 easier matters to me! Thanks for watching!
Music way to loud, not able to finish watching, sorry
Thanks for watching what you did! That’s good feedback.
I will gladly take it! I’ve wanted the fx6 for the longest time
Takes you ten minutes until you are sick of people screaming "Wackeeeen" into the camera. ;)
Haven't you tried the Catalyst Browse stabalisation? It's next level.
Heard of it, but haven’t tried it. I’ll check it out thanks! 🙏
Keep keeping it real. Useful thoughts
hi since you know that organic motion with handheld cameras i wanted to know if you think the rolling shutter speed makes a difference for this natural motion?
i'm looking between the FX3 sensor (ZVE1) that has faster sensor or the lumix S5ii that has class leading IBIS but slower sensor
and they have an upcoming S1H mark ii that is even better than FX3
Ha, I didn't even mention the back part (fractured L2 over here)...such a valid, extra point.
Which red? Which canon c?
@@hhankx Epic Dragon, Helium, C300, C200, C300II, FS7, Ursa Mini were the main cams over the years.
Have had my new FX3 for a week now and LOVE it so far. I’m very happy with the swap. Thanks for watching 🙏
Amazing perspective from a true pro...thank you...
Thank you! Coming from a true pro in his craft, that means a lot
When a CIA officer points a big camera at you, you probably get nervous;)
🤣 fair.
@@GravelDriveMedia yep....the top of the food chain...Arri Alexa 35 is not full frame...it is an APSC sized sensor...
@@GravelDriveMedia the full fram stuff comes mainly from TH-camrs...professionals do not care...it is like "sharpness"...any lens made in the past 80 years is sharp enough...
Its crazy cos the a7siii image still looks soo damn good 😂
True! Thanks for watching.
Honestly the a7SIII is still the best camera for its price
I had an FX6 for 4 years and it mostly sat in its case while I used the A7Siii for the vast majority of my work. I also dislike the EI shooting modes for Slog. The waveform monitor wasn’t a reliable way to set exposure. Plus the screen is terrible, and ergonomically it’s mediocre at best.
A video on how you got clients would be interesting.
I think an FX3 and an A7s3 are the perfect pair to have.
The FX3 bro... the camera nobody regrets buying.
Been killing mine for 4 years now.
Ha, yes, I don't know that Ive spoken to anyone that regrets the FX3! Thanks for watching!
Fx3 is such a monster best investment
Great video - lower the music your voice is great
Thanks Dennis! Yep, you’re totally right about music level…good feedback.
I’m in the Washington DC area as well. We should meet up bro thanks for the video.
Nice! Im out in Leesburg VA
For me lumix s5iix is best
fx3 doesn't have built in auto nd. Conversation is over.
Hi, I see some AF jumps in your video I thought the Sony cameras don't have...because I going to switch to to sony.
That’s laziness on my part. If you tap someone’s face on the touchscreen it’ll stay locked on them. Not sure if I had eye AF on either. I had wife and AF Continuous on so it kept jumping from the FX6 to me.
Its all good man. Feel free to sell it to me😂. Im a public safety documentary filmmaker👍
It already sold since the video came out 🙏 thanks for watching!
The files are IN the computer?! Haha Owen Wilsons face popped right into my head.
As an FX6 user I feel you on all these points. I use the a7siii or FX30 way more because of the first 2 issues.
Subscribed.
Haha! Thanks for watching and for getting the Zoolander reference! Cheers 🍻
I came here because I thought the thumbnail was Coach Beard from Ted Lasso. 😅
🤣🤣🤣
@GravelDrive Either way, I enjoyed the video and subscribed 😀
Id just take lff the matte box, handle, vlock. Then you have the best camera for being small. Once you get the FX3 with an ND solution and maybe a monitor or that horrid fake FX6 block.. then it will be bigger and worse. Maybe another A7s.. you cannot beat working in pairs. FX3? not so much.
Good points! For me unlike the modularity. Why do you like the a7s more than the FX3?
@@GravelDriveMedia Because it has a hole in that back to look at. that is the king mode for stripped down use (and that is you other camera? too) . Why not two identical cameras which is suprisingly liberating from on set choices to spare part. Ivbe spent year with non matching cameras and having two of the same could be so liberating.
Music was very off putting, doesn't match content and emotion , also very loud distracting, only got through 2 mins before I had to stop.
Thanks for watching as far as you did. Good feedback, a few others said the same. Cheers 🍻
@@timdanyo898 I think that is true only for the Burano
The colour range of modern Sony cameras is better than the ARRI. Film a green forest
There is no comparison.
toss it to me 😂
Hahaha, its on Facebook Marketplace for the tossing...
Former 7th and 5th Group now retired from 35 years News, Op, Doco, Features, TV Series, Treated like shit by Sony try new stabilized 2 piece DJI?
