- Why do I love the Springfield M1A Scout Squad Rifle, a gun based on a design from the 50s? It's not just nostalgia; it's the classic silhouette, the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, and the versatile 18" barrel.
It fires the powerful .308 round, balancing modernity with timeless appeal.
Despite its flaws, this rifle speaks to me on an irrational, guttural level.

do you hate accuracy, do you like heavy stuff? wanna pay too much for it? great we got the rifle for you!
I bought a SOCOM 16 when they first came out 20 years ago, wanted something that would avoid the AWB restrictions while living behind enemy lines in the People's Republik of Massachusetts. Topped it with a Leopold scout scope on quick detach rings and it's been my SHTF ever since.
Colion loves this because it's hella expensive.
Who doesn't love this rifle??
Wow that muzzle brake really works. I remember shooting the M14 in the army on full auto and by the third shot you were shooting at the sky. Funny story - they once had us train to shoot at aircraft by using an RC flying wing. I put my M14 on auto and dropped it on the first pass. Put a bullet through the engine and they only had one engine thinking that nobody would ever hit the engine but brought extra wings. I ruined everyone's training that day.
You and Garand Thumb are tempting me into this. Good option for us stuck in Commiefornia.
He ain't heavy! He's my brother!😊
I was involved in a self defense shooting a few weeks ago. And how the police treated me was not good. If you are interested feel free to reach out to me.
Us lowly subservients in the Socialist City of New Yorkistan are relegated to the ancient technology of yesteryear, if we want a semi auto. However, your vid of the M1A, basically the only 308/6.5 creedmore semi auto rifle with a detachable mag rifle available to us was everything I had imagined and hoped for. Bravo my friend.
I used to own a 1903 Springfield 3-0-6 . It was one hell of a firearm . Bought it for twenty five dollars . Sold it for two hundred and fifty dollars . Wish I had it back .
Mine came from a brother I served with. When he died, long after we got home, his son's brought it to me and said Dad wanted you to have this. I put a Leupold scout scope on it and never looked back. It hangs in the center of my gun wall.
IMHO the M1A scout is one of the best rifles for if SHTF. If you only have one rifle you want versatility, dependability, and ammo you can find very commonly used (308).
I love the M1A in all of its models.
I have this model in my collection. I was a Navy Gunner's Mate. I carried a M-14 and a Colt 1911 45. Both never failed me.
My retirement gift to myself was a Ruger Mini-30, for most of the reasons you mention here. I had walked past it on the shelf for a couple of years without notice.
On my bucket list
I ABSOLUTELY love the M1A! Part of history...
Looks sexier with the wood stock
I have the scout squad, M1A is a superb rifle! I would never sell it!
Theres a song call " a good look" by Sturgill Simpson and it has a line "got a socom scout with 20 extra mags" and I smiled at that
