I’ve always loved a modern aesthetic, but I still appreciate classic design, especially when it comes to guns.
The M1A has always been one of those classic guns that have always had my attention.
Not enough to make it a priority purchase but enough that it would stay with me for a few weeks when I remembered it.
However, after the very first time I shot it, I knew I had been depriving myself of one of the most beautifully visceral shooting experiences one can experience with a rifle.
This experience is akin to driving a muscle car, where being unrefined is a good thing.
Between the looks, the smell, the sound, and how they drive muscle cars overload you with sensations, and the Springfield M1A does the same thing, and I love it.

Yup, at my age I feel your ecstasy and excitement squeezing the trigger, the gentle nudge as she pushes back on the pocket of your shoulder as she yells down range on target. My wife made me cry IN PUBLIC.
When I was 7 years old, I saw a US Marine with an M14. Fell in love.
    Back to the story,...
2 weeks before Christmas several years ago, she had me take her to the store to show her what I'd been looking at for two months. The salesman greeted me like an old friend. He picked out my M1A and handed it to me. I told her everything. SA M1A, Loaded, competition everything. The salesman asked if I wanted him to box it up.
I told him I was still saving for it.
My wife leaned over my shoulder and said, "Box it up for him."
As I was filling out the paperwork, a man wearing a USMC VETERAN VIET-NAM cap, came over to me and told me "Congratulations. The one behind yours is mine"
After my old vet gunsmith and I mounted a Weaver 4-20X 50 Grand Slam Tactical scope, (high mount), on her, we got her sighted in. At 100 yds, the hole from 5 rounds of .308 measured .341of an inch. At 400yds, she puts 5 rounds in a quarter. I fired 5 rounds at 1000yds, at an old paint can top. First round missed low. Second was left by 5 inches. The last three hit the paint can top.
God knows I LOVE this RIFLE !!!
    THANK YOU, WIFE!!!

This gun was my first choice for a home defense rifle straight out of college (VMI where we were trained on M-14’s anyway). It’s an old, simple, proven, rugged platform that hits like a hammer at 500+ yards and gets the job done. It is, as Colion said, a battle rifle. It’s also gratifying to turn heads at the range when you pull this out next to the AR and AK guys and just start dumping .308 downrange. Great review, very well-put, instant sub from me. Keep up the great work!

Someone I know has both an AR-10 and M1A. The AR is custom built with medium weight Rainier barrel, free floating, and sweet. Mia is the Springfield "Loaded" version with medium weight bbl. Mister AR cannot keep up with Mia! Even with the stock tupperware stock on Mia, but in a lead-sled with me taken out of the picture, she did a 5 shot group of 5/8" at 100 yards, and reloads instead of factory ammo. Again, this was on a sled and I was not able to mess things up.
But, wow, the M1A is amazing. I tend to think that the AR design is better, but... there is something magical about an M1A.

After over 15 years, in 2020 I was able to buy a Scout Squad with straight cash. I'd heard that M1A's we're 2" MOA rifles at best, but I never believed it. My Scout prints 3/4" groups at 100yds with 165 grain loads like clockwork. And with that amazing muzzle brake I can mag dump 20 rounds in a 10" circle like butter on a hot knife. I will never give up my M1A and I intend for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren to inherit it. My son in now a United States Marine and he'd choose this rifle over his M-4 any day.

A few years back my local big chain gun store had a grand reopening at one of its locations. They sent out flyers announcing it and that the whole store was on sale including 5 or 8 Springfield M1A standard models at $500 off retail. Now I works nights and the store open it's doors at 8am. So I stayed up and left my house around 5:30am to beat the crowd. Got to the store just before 6am with a line around the building and down the street. At a little after 7am store personal announced that the allocated M1As were sold out along with some other firearms. So I was pissed but I thought if I didn't get one of those m1a on sale I would get a desert eagle. Well after 3 hours standing in line I literally said F it grabbed an m1a loaded and a desert eagle in brushed stainless both technically on sale. With what they discounted off the price I basically got free DROS fees, county tax, background check and partial state tax. Now I own two firearms that are icons and always draw attention at any range.

I like it - especially in a combat situation I think it makes sense because you can leave the safety on pretty much all the time - draw the gun in a quick ready to fire position - put your finger on the trigger and you instantly feel the safety which you can snap off in an instant. Your gun is still new but once it gets worn the safety will be easier to manipulate.

It ran just fine. It started to jam up with the sand, but you just ram the bolt back, drop the mag, run the bolt a few times and it usually works. If starts not cycling, just run it like a bolt-action. Something my Ar-308 didn't do so well. Nor did a few AR-15s. Once you get em jamming up...you gotta tear em apart and clean. I had an issue with the op rod hitting the base of the forward rail, hurting accuracy. Also the OEM rail was too high for me to get a good cheek weld with the Leupold 2.5x Scout scope (sadly discontinued). However, an Ultimak front rail solved both problems. The rifle is very dependable and nicely accurate. Plus I have lower 1/3 co-witness of the iron sights now thru the scope. Under 1 MOA at 100 yards off the bench with hand loads.

I picked up a socom16 on consignment ($1250 with 8 mags and all the paperwork) I changed out the kryptek woodland stock for linseed and walnut.... for that tanker look. I kept the pic rail though because I like the forward scout scope position. The original stock is currently getting cerakoted in a classic old school military woodland pattern. I used her this last November during Kentucky's deer season and took 2 for the freezer.... 30 and 120 yards respectively. Out of all of my rifles and carbines she's my favorite .Safe shooting!

The first rifle I ever shot was an M-14 while I was in the Navy in the mid-80s. I fell in love with it and always wanted to own an M1A. I finally bought the Scout Squad version a few years ago and it's awesome. If you want to see the M1A in action check out a movie called Daylight's End with Johnny Strong.

Best movie for this rifle to me was Blackhawk Down. Shugart also played byJohnny Strong using an M14 with an Aimpoint which was unusual as he and Gordon were flight overwatch for the ground teams so I figured he'd be using a magnified optic.

A friend of mine has one. We shot it last year. It’s a banger. I was surprised by the recoil. As you say, it isn’t unmanageable - you just have to get used to it. I wonder how one would shoot it in a real world situation without hearing protection. You feel the boom even with both plugs and muffs.

    • @balzaak4803

Yeah, and most folks don’t have Mickey Mouse ears lying around to slip on quickly. I’m looking into the tactical ear buds which allow you to hear at normal levels…..but slam shut for protection at sharp noises like gunshots. They tout them as adequate for shooting rifles, although ‘in-house’ you’re likely having to grab your .38 or 9mm or what-not. Anyway….something to look at. As it is, when I go to the range with my M1A, I’ll have my Mickey Mouse gear on. 😊

You don't hear really hear the shots in a real world situation, too focused on not becoming dead. Source, me, former infantryman with a deployment to AFG. Don't really recall hearing the IED that destroyed my truck either, but I do remember gripping the steering wheel and screaming "fuck because I was expecting it given the intel we received and being lost at a choke point in a field.

@@randomname3247 I think they call that ‘aural damping’. It happens in hunting as well. What you hear when shooting is kind of background. Or at least it appears that way. MY worry is that whether going into harms way or hunting, unplugged ears is going to cause hearing loss over time. Not to mention tinnitus. I like the ear buds because you can hear….sometimes amplified….normal sounds just fine. Unlike the Mickey Mouse ears.

First and foremost: this is THE BEST review of the SOCOM 16 i've seen on the 'net!! I understand your reservation regarding setting it up as a true (Jeff Cooper defined) "scout rifle"... they're not for everyone. As a 60something year young Army brat I enjoyed shooting the M14 (i still have three of my Dad's mags that fit my SOCOM 16 perfectly!), the M1A, M60, etc. When I was old enough to purchase my own weapons one of the first I snagged was my Ruger Mini-14. I still own, shoot and cherish that weapon, because it takes me back to my childhood days. I do have aspirations of purchasing a Vortex Crossfire II "Scout" to mount on my SOCOM. Thanks again for the awesome review!! I also couldn't help myself but to buy one of your IYKYK tees! God bless us all, dude!!

Colton- I bought one a couple years back and I also love it . It can do everything one wants to do with a rifle, and then some. Yes the ammo is heavier than .223/5.56 or even 7.62x39, but it ballistically out performs both. This rifle can take out an engine block and bust thru cover that AR .223 platforms cannot. It can take medium to large game for more efficiently than .223 also or .300 BLK, everyone’s favorite boutique round. It’s reliable as hell and easy to maintain. Also doesn’t give that alarming. ( to the anti gun nuts ) black rifle look. You can bash in a door with the stock that would render an AR inoperable. Winner, winner chicken dinner. All the way with M1A! 👍

I've got a Squad Scout, and it was in fact the first rifle I ever bought. I will never get rid of it, and have done a bit of work on it.
I highly recommend getting an M1907 style sling to complete the aesthetic and to provide a solid platform in all shooting positions. If you want to check it out, here on youtube there is a channel which has old U.S. army training videos from times past, and watching the 2 hour WWII training video on the M1 Garand is very satisfying.

I own the socom 2 version of it and its phenomenal! Items for thought…I believe its called sadlik full length guide rod. My rifle felt n sounded a little “twangy” like a paintball gun or a over gassed AR n the full length guide rod took that away instantly. Also i added a oversized mag release n a m4 style bolt release. I also like the old school feel and style of it but the m4 bolt release added a little more familiarity. U definitely wont be disappointed! Thank u for all u do
