Aztlan's Historical Dictionary: Amazons (Sub. Español)

For centuries explorers, conquistadores and soldiers of fortune projected their dreams, nightmares and fantasies onto the New World, inhabiting it with giants, natives with faces in their chests and all sorts of fantastical creatures and entities from ancient lore.
Today we are going to talk about some of the most common and fascinating characters from ancient lore that made it to the Americas during the Age of Exploration; The Amazons.

Which Islands you think Carib and Matinino actually are in modern geography?.

None. They were mythical places which Columbus in his desperation to find confirmation for his biases tried to see as real and akin to places in Marco Polo's tales. I explain that in the video

Off topic, but why didn't the Mayans have much contact with the Taino? They're right next to Cuba, and both peoples had boats good enough to traverse such a short distance.

The issue here is that we don't have any evidence to confirm such a contact. Scholars recognize it is feasible, but so far, we have no real confirmation of such contact. So maybe the Maya and the Taino peoples contacted each other at some point, but we have no concrete material to prove that, and until we find it, we can't honestly and conclusively state that they had contact in pre-Columbian times.
Also, it's "Maya". "Mayan" is only adequate when talking about the languages, not about the peoples; as there are many Mayan languages and many Maya ethnic groups.

@@AztlanHistorian Thanks for the clarification on Maya vs Mayan. I've heard both used and didn't realize one was for the language. Kinda like the Turkish language vs the Turkic languages.
