  • Contrary to the popular belief, the Americas were never fully conquered by the Europeans and the native peoples have had a long a well-documented history of resistance against those trying to take over their lands; a history that's still being written.
Today we explore one of the less understood chapters in this history of conquest and resistance; the conquest of Tierra del Fuego

this was honestly hard to watch. The video was great as always, but the history of Tierra Del Fuego is one of the most tragic parts of American and perhaps even World history

It was also quite hard to make if I'm honest. History is something people rarely understands. It's sad to see how many people fail to get that History is about people, their lives, their joys and their suffering... they're not just names and dates, they were people and we need to keep that in mind

There has been genocide in Patagonia among the indigenous people. There are no Indians left in Tierra del Fuego.

Great video. I would like to add that several times the Spanish tried to create colonies in the strait, the most important attempt was that of Captain Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa who founded 2 cities (1584). Unfortunately for him, the seeds that the colonists brought did not germinate, Sarmiento had to go to Spain to find supplies for the colony but was captured by the English and later by the French. In that long period of time the colony died of hunger (1590) since no one else knew the extreme need they were in. It is incredible to think that if they had been successful, surely that territory would not belong to Chile and Argentina, but to a new country since Sarmiento had been appointed governor, therefore the new colony would have a lot of autonomy.
In those years the English and Dutch also had plans to conquer the strait and also faced the natives of the strait and Tierra del Fuego. Richard Hawkins wrote that the strait is the key to the new world, whoever conquers the strait will conquer the new world.

Indeed. There were many other failed colonial enterprises in the Americas, both by Spain and other colonial powers; and who knows how things would've been if they had ended differently... but this is not an alternate history channel :)

When I start my TH-cam channel either after or during college I plan to make a video on one of the "hunters" or bounty hunters to show that natives like you said were seen more like vermin and animals than human beings with culture and morals, thanks for the video Aztlan.

It's sad to see we live in an era in which we can still hear colonial apologists defending all sorts of atrocities as if colonized people should really be grateful for suffering them. The era of colonialism hasn't really ended yet, and it's peak was just two or three generations ago, so there's still a lot to do.
Hope you can help us to do so my friend!

Latin American history is full of places and stories that remain out of the "World History" curricula and we need to change that.

@@AztlanHistorian I find it frusterating that so much of the history media online is about the same places, usually europe, china and t he middle east. For some reason we have50 videos about rome before we get any about america! I really appreciate you bringing this history to us, it is very informative, and these people deserve to have their story heard :)

Sadly the history of the Americas has everything against it. The pre-Columbian part is mostly lost, the Colonial part is distorted and the Modern one is censored. Unlike in Rome's case, we can't access a large and free set of sources.
To properly educate people about the Americas is one of my goals, and I will keep working on that :)

To be fair, what we today think as "the modern world" is pretty recent, so people living in the same way as their ancestors did in Roman times or before weren't that rare in 1900. In fact, there are still some people like that today, like the Sentinelese in the Bay of Bengal.

Recently read the book The Wager and the most fascinating part, for me, was the English sailors encounter with the Kaweska. Came here looking for more info. The English were starving, vermin infested and ill yet somehow the natives, healthy and well fed, were “the savages”. Such a tragic history. I hope to travel there someday to see this beautiful corner of the world.

I am here after watching Survivorman in Tierra Del Fuego wondering why such a beautiful, albeit difficult weather zone region, was not inhabited by natives or even the Gauchos anymore. The reality is inherently devastating and incredibly sickening. A booming community of natives who managed to survive and thrive off the land were systematically wiped out by imperialism, as much of South America experienced collectively. Progress and habitation by settlers occurs without regards for those who inhabit isolated regions. For the stake on property in such a beautiful region as Terra Del Fuego, an entire culture was decimated leaving no humans to discuss how they adapted and thrived under difficult circumstances. Only a single German Missionary documented their existence leading to a nation ordering the natives execution. All in the name of power and domination.
