Last September I was lucky enough to get hold of the Honda CB500F press bike for a few weeks. So join me as I take this highly underrated little naked for a ride.
I am a massive fan of the Honda 471cc parallel twin engine that sits in 3 bikes across the range, the adventure focused CB500X, the sporty CBR500R and this, the naked CB500F.
This bike would make a perfect first big bike for those not fussed on rushing to get more power. It has excellent manners around town making it a breeze to ride and a nice low seat height that may attract many shorter riders.

I have this bike, bought it new as my first bike, and it has been a great bike to learn on. Powerful enough that I'm not bored with it around town, and forgiving enough to be a great learner bike. I've had zero issues with it, and would definitely recommend it as a first bike.

I got my first in April this year. Totally agree on every level! 0 issues 0 regrets!

48hp n 43nm is plenty. Weve been spoiled by manufacturers with nonsense sheer power figures.
im even at the pont for wanting a smaller bike just so that i can rip the gears, in 2nd you're at 70 without sweatting on this bike.

Ah. It is enough. Ive done over 5000km with 35hp then over 10k with 58.same bike. Ridden some 100_140hp bikes. 58 is fine but sometimes would be nice to have 65-75. 48would be fine too but squeezing it and diminished fun. All in the licensing systems. Not sure the 650 fills the gap? Didnt mjnd the higher Rev character of a cbr600rr. 420-550cc 75hp 180-190kg would be great
Absolutely agree with that 👍👍, mind you in Asia a 11bhp Air-cooled bike is hauling 10 people at once over the mountains by mounting extension seats on each side lol
For American and Continental European freeways I'd prefer to have 650-1000 cc. nything 300+ cc certainly can handle freeways, just not with much passing power.
My first bike was 100cc, then had a 150cc 14 hp for ten years. Now own a cb300f with 24 hp, I'm very much happy with power and performance i might buy this in five years when i make enough money. In my opinion 1000cc bikes belong in the track not the roads.
The comment that it's a small bike that rides like a big one is spot on. With it's effortless torque and wide spread of power that was the first thing I noticed when I first tried one. I got rid of the crappy Dunlops and now have sticky Bridgestones. There was a fantastic improvement in handling and I don't miss my V-Strom 1000 at all. The 500F is an effortless joy in the twisties and much more than a beginners bike.

Just bought one for my wife. Her first bike and she LOVES it! I love it, too. I find myself “borrowing” it for a ride every once in awhile.

Amazing value bike. I had the 2018 model with an SC exhaust and it was sounding very well. It's one of the most practical bike out there with a big tank (good for more than 450 km if you're careful with the throttle), good under-seat storage and very well built. It's not flamboyant (that's Ducati's job) but it's built to last and start every time. It's cheap when it comes to service and it's got more than enough power to get you in trouble. I loved its lack of weight and flick-ability in the corners. Overall, highly recommended!

Andy Satch hahaha. That’s true mate. It’s almost the perfect bike if you want one to take you from A to B. But somehow the greed for more power (and other things you don’t need) takes over and you just want more and more. Then you sell and buy something more expensive and more powerful. I now got the CB650R and this too is a fantastic bike. Let’s see how long I’ll keep it 😜
@@andysatch9150 first thing to remember is that no bike is perfect. There's great all-rounders that won't match bikes designed to do be better at something specific, at that specific thing.
Sooner or later, nearly all bikes want to feel power.
Suitable for a 5' 11" lump of 225lbs or not ?
I'm currently on a NT700 and I'm sure I will be for long enough but always looking and thinking down the line.
@@brianfarrell6607 would fit you just fine as the seat height is almost identical to your bike. But I think the NT is a different bike with a different purpose so unless you don’t want touring and go for commuting, I wouldn’t switch. Ride safe!
I'm 6'3 and 33-34" leg and I fit very well on this bike, feels and handles amazingly. Really good bike, I'd recommend a test drive.

I’ve had 1000cc bikes for twenty years and it’s taken me all this time to realise the CB300R I am currently on is all the bike I need, and is probably all the bike I’ve ever needed, apart from the annual long trek to Cornwall we used to do.
I have the cb125r it's the same bike with shorter piston stroke, its an amazing 125 to zip about on
I bought it the last january. It's my first bike and it's amazing. I thought to buy a CB650R but maybe it could be too much for my first moto.
Can you adjust the seat height on this motorcycle?

This is way better and more fun than a 650. the 4 sylinders on a 650 makes it really boring for everyday use.

@@juanesteban8938 not as fun inn the low revs, and acceleration. Everyday use is all about acceleration thantop speed inn mye opinion. 650 isway smoother tho, so it is personal pref

It's really all the bike you ever need; especially for the daily commute. Probably very good in MPG terms as well. Nice one, thanks Dan
Yeah awesome mpg, I got around 70mpg on average unless I was out for a blast.
Oh, the CB500F.
I love this bike. Currently I have one from 2016 with the Red-White-Blue color on it.
Bought it two years ago, done around 25.300km on it. If I can resume it would be simplicity.
It's cheap to maintan, cheap to drive, you don't need to worry too much about "How can i fit this" or "Can i pass through this?", It will just do it for you.
Still a Learner on this bike, but damn I like it.
I rode this bike (almost) every day, even on winter at 1°C (I live in France). Start in one cranck, heat up fast enough, and a good ride for someone close to 2 meter high.
The only thing I don't like on this bike is the brake. Once you learn how to drive this thing, honestly, you kinda miss a 2nd disc on the front.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of this bike. It is a fantastic machine, one of the most enjoyable bikes I've ever ridden, honestly, and I've ridden a ton.

I have the 2016 model, bought it used last year and as soon as lockdown here in Italy becomes less strictly I am going back to riding. Great vid tho
48 hp is about what my 1971 Triumph Bonneville had and it topped out around 110mph. So the little 500s got spunk.
i guess it weights less, and more precice fueling
I weigh a slim 150 lb, I cant get my speedo on the 500f over 107. yet. But 110 seems a reach atm

To be honest I don’t think it looks great, that headlight turns me off...it doesn’t seem to fit with the bike.
And I love the sound of the CB650R , this 2-cilinder sounds like a little thumper... not my thing tbh but hey.

Hi mate, I'm borrowing one from Honda at the moment, as my fireblade is having some work done, and I've been out this morning for a run up the twisties on it and what a brilliant bike lots of fun and I can see there appeal, obviously a massive, massive difference from my blade, but honestly It a great, bike lots of fun, and I smoked a couple of sports bikes on the way home, I know childish and I'm not john mcguinness but though that know, know. My CBR500R didn't really 'feel' light until I got better rubber on it. Could be because the previous owner barely rode it and it had the original, 5+ year old, rubber on it. Or it could be because D222's just aren't very good. Not sure which, or if it was a combination thereof. Either way, a new set of Pilot Road 5's had it almost reminding me of my Ninja 300's handling. Very light and nimble feeling indeed.
I bought this 2'nd hand a month ago. My first bike was xmax 250.(for a couple of months) I can say that this is my first real 😊bike. It's a humble looking bike with satisfactory power. Excellent balance and parts for higher level bikes. So I love it ❤
Changing gears on a motorbike is so boring. Just to get any speed up. Zzzz. Scooters all the way.
Mine is a blue CB500F with the pre-oblong shaped dash. I've added a bikini /handle bar fairing, centre stand, Tom Tom GPS, and a 56 litre GIVI Topbox. It's a great round town /freeway commute bike. Mine has the 17 inch wheels which means they're sensitive to road surfaces, so you have to keep tyre pressures upto speck. Lockable top box good for storing helmet, shopping, chain oil etc. Should come with a centre stand for oiling, adjusting chain, spinning rear tyre to check out for nasties that shouldn't be there. Good with urban parking where you can't find any in a car. A very happy owner. Engine loves to work.

I had a 2015 Honda 500, I loved it, then went on more powerful bikes for 5 years but now find myself back on a Honda 500. The exhaust sounds good for a stock, but I found with both 500s that the throttle had too much free play from factory. It's much more responsive if you adjust it down to around 2mm so the throttle responds to just the slightest roll on. I found the clutch engaged early too so thats always worth fine tuning. I love that the brake lever is now adjustable too.
Only real gripe is that first gear is snappy and short. I think most 500 riders adjust to launching in 2nd gear.

@@ayookusanya5437 Not really, because I hardly ever got to use all the power unless I was out in the country side away from traffic. On a faster bike, every car just felt like an obstacle slowing me down, and that's a dangerous way of thinking, always feeling like I have to pass everyone because I can go faster. However, there's still a lot of fun to be had on the CB500F especially in 2nd and 3rd. More importantly, it is a nice handling bike, very manoeuvrable especially at low speed. I always wanted this size of bike but after passing A licence last year got persuaded to go bigger and picked up an FZ6 fazer. In many ways I think I missed out because I enjoyed the basic nature of the 125 and just wanted something a bit more powerfulaa
I got exactly the same as my first bike. The FZ6 naked version though, and i'm now even looking at a slower bike for everyday use, something a2 friendly just for commuting etc.
Ugh I wish I was out of uni and at a job so I can afford one of these awesome little bikes.

@The Wobbly Motorcyclist I generally get most bikes from the manufacturers directly these days but I do have a few dealers that are willing to work with me. It's a quid pro quo relationship. Some dealers only see it as a waste of time but other dealers have told me that they've sold a few bikes off the back of my videos so are more than happy to loan me a bike for a few hours.
Cheaper uk road tax £67; as opposed to £93 for the CB650
I ride a '16 CB500F. Daily commuter. First bike. I love it! Commute, long day rides, twisties, this bike does it all. No touring yet but that's my plan next year. Just need a bit of onboard storage.

I guarantee you jumping into 500F from your Cb125f will definitely put a big smile on your face as the power difference is quite substantial. The 500f can seat at 90mph all day long no problem, not to mention the torque is where this bike excels to be honest, it will tackle hills like nothing. 👍😁

You posted a video of the 2019 CB500X six months ago. What's your take on the difference between them? Which is your favoutite?
Tough one to answer, essentially the same bike with a slightly different seating position. I love the naked nature of the 500F and it is a little ligher and a lower seat height. Plus the bars aren't as wide. The 500X will probably be better for longer journeys though. I honestly couldn't decide!
From riding my cbf125 this looks like a great UPGRADE. Love it.
The 2022 version of the CB500F has been upgraded with major revisions. Check it out.
Yep, BPF and dual radial calipers and discs. Should be a nice upgrade!
Got the 2017 model. Only thing I wish I had from the 2019 was the stock gear indicator and the mirror. The previous model are hideous.

Regardless, make sure it does not suffer from the same fork issues as the MT-07
New forks for 2018-2020 models still no adjustment but if u stay under 100mph while riding wheelies its fine🤣🤙💯

For any riders around my size (5'4") I recommend keeping an eye on the used market for this bike, or something very similar like a Yamaha MT-07 or even a Suzuki GSF600 (bandit) if you're desperate for more speed, or a Ninja 650R (ER-6F) these bikes aren't too sporty but give a decently comfy ride.
Avoid the V-Strom. I know they can surpass 200k miles easy but they're heavy. Too heavy.

Shouldn't have, all my recent stuff is recorded at 2.7k at 60fps. Only difference with this one is the angle wasn't on SuperWide, just Wide.

@@luismagana1742 i've had the 2018 for 3 years now and it's a dream. Sometimes the bike slips tp neutral when i upshift to 2. but i think it's because im too soft with the shifter. other than that it's a beautiful bike with a really nice sound even stock

I'm not comparing this against other 500's. Just a review of this bike as it stands. I'll review the CBR500R at some point though.
EnglishBikerDan you mentioned Honda only has 3 variations with this engine where there is 5. The CB500F and R500R have the same engine and chassis for example.
I've never riden a bike with clip-on bars. Are they less comfortable than flat bars?
The angle looks slightly awkward on the wrists.
Picked up the 2017 500X several weeks back for the screen, skid plate for occasional gravel use and have been chuckling ever since. I'm 6' but with an extra long torso and 34" inseam so the standard upright position seems to fit me and feel very all day good. Pegs are quite a bit further back than my 2002 CB750 Nighthawk and are quickly becoming my long-term ride preference for comfort...and yes, Peppy is a good label for that Honda 500 parallel twin. Perfect for why I acquired it. Thanks for sharing the experience EBD

Honda makes bikes that last...quality, longevity and great resell value.
Santino Shariffe tbh this one has not a great resell value, at least here in belgium. A used CB500F with 1000 km on the clock, is like 1000€ discount from brand new. And if you go for an older model its really easy to pick up one for under 4K

There most certainly is but I'm not rushing the edit. So, I'm hoping part 2 next week but we'll see!
For those who just like me love to do their own bike maintnance, this models should have an easier access to air filter and valves which are a pita to access and a nightmarento adjust if necessary. Besides that, amazing reliable, nimble, confortable bikes.
Let me put things in perspective. I had one of the now old CB500 1997 model, if memory serve. All in all "identical" to this one, only with carbs instead of injection. With 58 awesome HP, 18 liter tank, drum brake on the rear and even more storage under the seat.
Mine was still "made in Japan" model. Later the Brazilian versions seem to have a more dubious reputation!
All this to say that in 4 years of ownership. 95.000km where done in an impeccable and reliable way. I've never touched the valves! Worked flawlessly anyway! ;-)
One chain kit!! one battery, 4 sets of spark plugs, air filters, oil and filter changes, front brake pads, never touched the rear drum brake! 1 set of wheel bearings (front and back) and a lot of tyres. Really not much to tell, it simply worked everyday all day. All maintenance was done by me.
This bike always "slept" on the street, rain or shine. It was never a garage baby! I believe this sum up quite well why this mid range Honda's are amazing bikes! ;-)

The rebel 500 shares the same engine just tuned down so really 4 bikes share the same engine
Yeah, I meant that there's 3 bikes in the 500 range with the engine but I explained it poorly. Can't wait to try the 2020 Rebel though! 👍
I'd like to at least have a rebel 500...havent had a motorcycle in a couple years and I used to have a 1982 honda silver wing and that was a 500. So I think I'll just stick to something between the 500 to 750 range

First time i rode it i did a breaking test and i was surprised how idiot-proof the abs is
I own the '19 R and I have to say, this generation of CB500 is the best so far. The only negative with this bike (depending on your preference) just like the previous generations, the 1st gear is too short. I changed the front sprocket to 16 teeth and the gear shortness is fixed to a degree but I prefer taller gearing. Hey at least it fixed the speedo error and 1st gear.
I agree. Even in stop & go traffic in the thick of Boston I'm in 2nd gear just rounding city blocks.
Does it chudder with the taller gearing at low speeds? I've done taller gearing before and didn't enjoy the way my single cylinder responded at low speeds.
Just subscribed loving the reviews. Really good job. Out of curiosity what would you prefer the Cb500f or the z650. Am doing my test soon and my friend was planning on selling me their z650 or I get a new Cb500f. Decisions decisions decisions lol 😂

This is literally the bike i am getting when lockdown stops and i can do my A2, can you give me a comment on the weight? Ive heard the 189kg is quite a bit to get used to. Thanks. (im not very tall, only 5'7' so it is something i need to think about.)
Not something I noticed tbh. Felt very well balanced to me. Test ride one when you pass your test.

I wish they made a cb500R. I like the headlight design of the R better than the F. And I wish the gauges were analog. I hate all the digital tablet displays. Even digital looking analog would be nice.
How would you compare the riding position between this bike and the cb650r? I know the 650r is a little more aggressive, but just wondering how it compares. Thanks!
It's pretty similar but I'd say the 500 is slightly more comfortable.
I used this bike many times and it's a very capable bike for city and highway commuting.Have enough power to do everything and very reliable.
Good for you. Very sensible too. The show-off bikes usually show incapable riders.
Glad you've finally ridden this, got the same bike in black. What I love about this budget bike is the quality of the workmanship, Honda does care about their product. Mine is about year old and I'm still over the moon every time I ride it. 👍👍

I'd love to know if the CBR500R fairing makes much of a difference vs the CB500F with a windscreen. I think the CB500F could be more the look and seating position I am into.
The wind blast is a little less on the faired 500R. Still, neither was too bad.

Looks like you rode past my house on the way towards Guildford! Also you must have passed Excelerate Motorcycle Training at Mytchett who got me through my full A licence in January! Cards on table - will the CB500F do it all for me as a first big bike? Very tempted after your review...

Ummm all seems a little frantic and revvy encouraging you wring it's neck all the while , not a relaxing ride at all, I can see the appeal for testosterone pumped up lad of 18 where ever single journey must be completed at 100mph , like I did , but no real use to me now , the 270° crank idea would have been a better bet , calmed things down with more torque and less screaming the bollocks off it all the while .

Do you prefer this bike over the Mt-03 and if so why?
Depends on your use, for me the 500 makes a better everyday commuting and even touring bike. I think the Yam is a little bit too small for me to do those things on it but fine just for local blasts. That's just my take on the MT03.
I just got 2019 cb500f first big bike changing gears seem clunky is that normal as I been told or needs clutch adjustment ?
I can't remember the gears being clunky on this one.
Still trying to decide between the CB500X, CB500F and KTM Duke 390.
All are good. 390 is the most fun on a sunny day but the Honda's are still excellent bikes. Very dependable.
I learned on a cb500f. Bought the cb500x, because of the looks. Highways even with mild strong winds were a battle. It classifies as touring bike but cant really compar with my suzuki VStrom DL. But if I went touring I always outlasted my friends with nakeds, in terms of breaks from riding. Still miss my cb500x sometimes. And fuel ecomeny is really good. Way worse than my vstrom 😅
I love more the cb300f !! Obviously it’s not faster than the cb500f, but I find it more manageable to ride,and nimble. Still,it’s a HONDA , and they make great bikes. Ride safely my friend ! 👍👍👍🇨🇦 The only problem I had riding the 500 is that it’s not really comfortable when riding more than 1 hr . My butt hurts 😢
There’s also the rebel 500 with the same 471, just tuned a bit different.
Yep, everyone keeps mentioning it now. It's not one of the three 500's which is why I left it out. Rebel review soon, hopefully....
People always leave out the rebel when talking about this engine. Weird.

Honda's 500 cc series, 500 x is the best seller, followed by CBR, then the Rebel
500 F is the last on the list > where the late CB 650 F was top seller in the 650 market (compared to Z 650 and MT 07)
Personally i prefer the look of this 500 F and 650 F, new CB 650 R headlight just feels not right.

I ride a 250cc suzuki with close to 30hp and 22nm, its not much but riding around town and around the narrow/winding country roads its got plenty to offer..a lot of fun..but yeah, it does feel slow at times..

No it's slightly different, the Rebel 500 makes less bhp but slightly more torque and slightly lower down.
