A Tour of the Asansol Loco Shed (Jan. 2000)

  • After an exhilarating Bokaro Shatabdi footplate, I headed to the Asansol loco shed. For the next hour or so, I had an opportunity to be up, close and personal with various AC electric locos in different stages of POH, including condemned ones! Fortunately, I had a treat waiting for me - a live WAM3 loco was doing shunting duties. Need I say more? The trip report is here - irfca.org/apps/... .

Excellent video Mani Vijay. Infact I want to tell you that my grandfather was a loco pilot of Asansol division and as far as I remembered he drove the loco WAM and WAP. I showed this video to him, and he started crying. He was just recalling the days he passed during his 40years of duty from a cleaner to Special grade loco pilot. Thank you Mani Vijay.

Precious video. Especially WAM2, WAM3, WAG3 etc. The first AC locos of the country. WAM3 had reversed pantos similar to YAM1. Both were made by the Japanese consortium of HMT - Hitachi Mitsubishi Toshiba.

    I grew up in Asansol
My father was a Doctor at Eastern Railways in Asansol from 2000-2022. And previously was posted at Kanchrapa from 1985-2000.
Sir all your old videos involving Asansol are very precious to me because we traveled to many parts of India in the 2000s so I know this station from end to end.

Awesome WAM treat video Sirjee!! Love the livery of the WAP-6s..it was far better than the current livery !! First time I am seeing WAG-3/4 locos!! and 22060 at 6:18 sec mark was a Beauty!! Love the livery!! Much better than monotonous Red P-4 livery! At that time MGS was under ER not ECR as per marking on the loco!! The train which was crossing at 6:36 mark was probably Black Diamond Express considering the time (10:06 am),the rake composition and the name plate!

The WAP-1 at 6:29 has an unusual large, round-shaped headlamp. Prior to this, I never knew that MGS had WAP-1s once. Damn! Also adding sir, my father, he's a railway brat, and so, he grew up amongst trains. He used to tell me about Mitsubishi electric locos that once used to come to Gaya. He also told me about its shrill horn which sounded quite unique at that time, I guess the honk given by the WAM-3 at 6:03 and between 7:12 and 7:24 is the one. I've heard it for the first time! Thank you sir for preversing a part of Railways' History. Watching your videos is definitely a visual treat.

Also adding sir, the freight wagons making their appearance between 3:44 and 4:14 (with the open one being a BOST wagon probablyThe closed one resembles a BCNA wagon is BCXC wagon) have got those old-style bogies. I've seen those type of bogies lying abandoned on an abandoned track at Gaya. There are two of them, with one of them having a buildplate of 1970 and the other one having a buildplate of 1977.

@@ManiVijayYes he did drove . He specially recalling the memories with Steam Loco. He worked really hard when he was fire man and he has break almost tons of coal for UP-GRADIENT section of Jhajha and Gomoh. For him the most vulnerable stations were Prdhankhanta, Chota-ambona and kalubathan. As these stations have or had i don't know too much curve. And lots of lots of memories. He joined railway in early 1948 as cleaner. He used to clean the fire box of the steam loco and after cleaning the fire box they given a small box of cream which he has to rub in the entire fire box for shining. His first ever salary was 17 rupees and 21 paisa. He had one small notebook which i found last before his death... In that book he used to write his per month salary... All his hikes during his 40 years of profession. Lots of things to say Mani Sir....
Our family lost him last year on 4th May 2022... He left behind so memories... He was very attached with me... Can't explain you the loss i faced Mani Sir... Just can't write anymore Mani Sir... Hope you understand. 🙏

@andy25biotech I knew you would like this video, being a WAM-lover like me :-) I, too, loved the livery of the WAP1 loco #22060 - wonder why they don't use this a lot. Good observations about the ECR marking, and the Black Diamond Exp. :-)
