I meet Van Damme in 1993 on filming location in Stanley Park for the movie Timecop and again in 2004 here in Vancouver, I worked as a Security Guard in the Vancouver Film Industry.
Just because Van Damme doesn't fight for living doesn't mean he can't fight. He's flexible, trained for decades and Lambert even admitted he has amazing control withn a 1/4 of an inch. Why the heck would you fight if you could make millions in movies ?
This. It’s the exact reason Bruce lee made movies as well. Not only that, but you can inspire and teach things from movies you can’t by being a “profession fighter”
Yep. Plus, when JCVD was in his prime, there was no such thing as MMA or the UFC. There was very little money to be made in fighting, outside of boxing, and even in boxing you had to be among the top ranked to make any real money.
Look, the most important thing is mindset, JCVD didnt have that fighter mindset, desire to hurt someone, he was amazing athlete, technicaly, strong, fast, he had all those predispositions but as he said about him self “I am not fighter, I am lover” or “fighting didnt make me happy at all” Thats huge difference from someone who just wanna damage your face, destroy you, he put whole his focus to it, hide his punches, working on fighting IQ with experiences, Van Damme on the other hand focused to make it look nice to watch, its just so different, but its not black and white, I dont claim he cannot fight at all, I am sure he could fight in his prime on some level, but you cannot compare it to some fighter which do it for living, its just another level.

With more training (jui jitsu) and more fight experience on top of the fight experience he already had, VD had the potential to compete with/challenge the "best of the best" in an octagon. I think Van Damme has gotten a lot better and has grown in Martial Arts as the years go by. Just because he has not done much "real" fighting, does not mean he would not do well in full contact fighting. Some people are just gifted naturally.
The 50 punch combo didnt even look good. This guy is a bad fight chore because he plays to the actors weakness not strength. Van dammes punches always looked weak compared to his kicks.
@@booty121212 I agree, they were just your basic movie type punches, & if Van Damme actually threw 50 in a row (or anything close to that number) it would've looked ridiculous, laughable, even, the bad guy's going to just stand there while someone hits him 50 times?! And, as always, every move Van Damme threw had to be shown from at least 3, quick cutting, over-edited, camera angles, so you couldn't tell how many times he really through those punches anyway.
Lambert is right about JCVD not been possibly able to beat any of these guys in real life. It's just the lifestyle. At that point, Jcvd, moviestar, rich, money, "easy life". A younger, hungry and violent Van Damme maybe, but not 1996 Van Damme.
I wanted to like universal soldier the return but just didn’t have the magic. Film sucked but loved Michael jai white vs van damme. Their styles are so similar
Yeah that narrative was garbage as hell. Could have been way better. The later one's were far better Regeneration and Day of Reckoning. Low budget filmed but far better storylines and acting.
I highly respect Stephen’s opinion and I understand what he’s saying when he says movie fighter.but some of those guys got into movies because of there martial arts skills in the first place.van damme started training when he was a kid way before he thought about becoming a actor.he did complete on some sort of level also at least even if it was very short lived.
I think Lambert is either bitter about something Van Damme wise, or he just doesn’t have the understanding or enough information on JC. He is the real deal in many ways. And if you really want to get into it deeper. Many of those fighters do not have any “real” fight experience. I think the majority of serious amateur MMA fighters would be a massive test for many of those fighters in the movie, if not all. It’s a different game and we know and understand more of what actually works. I think JC had all the technical understanding and physical gifts to be a great fighter. He had the awareness, depth perception and kinesthetic awareness as well as physical and mental prowess. He just went a different direction with his talent. But I think he would hold his own very very well. Nothing against Lambert, I just don’t agree with him and I don’t think he has all the facts nor the full understanding of many of the things he’s speaking about.
Man I feel you! I'm a huge fan. But as a real martial artist I'm not surprised that Steven's opinion is Van Damme isn't consistent with real combat fight training, I mean every day fighting sparring. I get what he means.
eh.. calling van damme just a movie guy is bullshit. Guy sounds misinformed tbh surprised considering he’s worked with him. I guess he thinks the same thing about Bruce lee as well. Smh.
I knew he was full of bs when he said that the fighters would hit back at the lead hero as a receipt. No stunt man or fighter will do that because it means no job!
@@booty121212 yeh the guy seems a bit full of shit to be honest. He’s confusing sports with real fighting because all those guys he’s talking about compete in sports. Smh.

Hello to all true martial artist and thank you viking samurai for great content you bring on the show. I agree with you that van Damme could have probably hold his own. Coming from a competitor like myself who has competed from point sparring to full contact muy thai, fighting in competition is anybodies game. As long as they are condition for that tournament/ full contact event anything can happen. I acknowledge that your guest has been involve in movies which is awesome and a privilege, but for a big guy like van Damme he can move! I would not want to get hit with a roundhouse kick Mr van Damme. Real fight experience or not those moves that he does on TV is not fake. I'd like to see some try to have balance, flexibility and control. Not an easy thing to do. Hall of fame martial artist in my book
Yeah for sure agree look at Van dammes legs they are huge tree trunks, assive thaighs , and he knows body mecanics, and pivitong, and using his body weight behind the kick that kick full power would knock someone out.
Mr.Lambert is 100% correct, you can look good throwing kicks, punching, jumping fly kicks, but being an actual fighter who fights , can take a beating and give it not just put on fancy moves. Thats like thinking Sylvester Stallone can take on an actual boxer.
no comparsion stallone is just a actor, and never even really learned boxing Vam damme is a real martiala rtist with a real black belt, and competed, I would say about Statham, no real black belt and jsut movie fighting, or Keanu Reeves jsut learned moves for the movies, but not a guy that has a legit black belt and won tournaments.
- What Jiu-Jitsu guy is Steve talking about that he thinks would have won? And he was clearly asked a question - of the 16 fighters who would win? Why wasn't that effectively answered?!?! - Sounds like 'The Quest' was a goddam 3 ring circus on set. Maybe thats why the movie was a bomb - which it was! It was a Blockbuster FLOP! That movie could have been one of the best Karate movies ever and it was the exact opposite. - Also, Frank Dux was a fight coordinator for this movie and also allegedly wrote some of the movie script. But there were a lot of problems with Dux in regards to his involvement with this movie. You can see on CourtTV that Dux sued JC over certain issues relating to this movie and lost and lost his appeal too. - Of the 16 fighters on 'The Quest' I'd pick JC or Stefanos (Greek Guy) as the Champion. I strongly disagree w/ Steve where he says JC would have gotten beat up by all of those fighters and that JC never experienced real fights? JC holds an impressive Kickboxing record w/ more than 40 wins under his belt. What is Lambert talking about?!?!
Stefanos...Lambert is just suffering from early on-set dementia or something. Plus he was being dismissal of VD's experience. At least 20 kickboxing/full-contact matches...and at least 40 semi-contact matches. At least 60 total matches. Tried to act like that never happen. VD seemed to try to give him work on the Quest as an apology for what happened on Timecop...Lambert still has a grudge. Acting as if VD was scared of him when the crew on Timecop supposedly said "you can kick his ass now" but Lambert just decided to walk off instead of beating up VD. Acting as if every fighter on The Quest could beat VD. Acting like VD has little to no fight experience. The extreme bias/dislike was obvious.
I think he was saying that the best fighter there was one of the background extras, who was hired as a fighter but wouldn't do the fight correctly, so he ended up not fighting. Didn't understand that the purpose of the movie is to make Van Damme look good and wanted to do his own showboating. We didn't get to see him fight because he was too arrogant to be a movie fighter.
I agree with Lambert, VD is a screen fighter more than anything, but in a real full contact fight I'd be surprised if he'd win any of the other guys. And I'm a fan, but I can see the difference.
Viknig Samurai: Did you ever ask Steven Lambert about Chuck Norris´fighting abilities? He talked about Joe Lewis and Benny Urquidez but he didn´t say anything about Chuck Norris. But I know that he worked with Norris several times.
Some of the calmest people have the most control and focus in a fight, so I disagree with this choreographer because he can't say how JCVD would fight because he has never seen him in a real or professional fight. VD imo has a fighting spirit that people may not have seen yet but if he was put into a situation where it was a fight for survival, I believe it would be like waking a calm storm...👊👍😎
People are always hating JCVD, and i think it's because he's the real deal and people just want to talk shit, people talk shit about Bruce Lee and JCVD, well JCVD and Bruce Lee are the 2 best martial artist ever in my opinion.
I love van damme in my humble opinion he was a great athlete in great shape I just can't believe he would not be able to fight very well in reality. Great interview viking.👍👌
well Van damme was a legit karate black belt, plus trained in thailand a few times, I am sure he knows his stuff plus his kicks are perfect, with balance and control plus look at his muscles and frame if he was too hit a average dude hard that person is not getting up.
Wow. i love this man's insight. because that is my BIGGEST criticism of van damme. He does the SAME moves in each film EXCEPT the Quest. In the quest, Van Damme ADAPTS his style to each fight and triumphs. That's is why i love THE QUEST. It's one of Van Damme's best and most underrated but i see now that Steven is responsible for that. Great work on his part. The story telling and the emotion in the choroegraphy is some of the best stuff we've seen Van Damme do. It's a Van Damme film where the drama matches the intensity of the action. Steven should be proud of his work on that film. One of my favs!! Great interview segment Viking! thanx. u rock. Keep em' coming with these interviews. OMG. the tiger guy broke a table in half with his forearm! daaaamn. i gotta get this book and read it. i did read that the guys who played the fighters were upset with the choreography that they did in the film because they wanted to SHOW off their moves and couldn't, but steven's comments give it all more context. working with those fighters was PURE chaos!!! ha ha ha.. respect 2 steven for rangling those men in. I also read that the production was disorganized and Peter McDonald was the TRUE director of the film. but yeah, i'm sorry Viking. Steven sounds like a legit fighting guy and if he says Van Damme in real life would get his ass handed to him by these guys, i believe him. i love Van Damme movies, but this brutal honesty from Steven lets us know that Van Damme is a bodybuilder who's VERY flexible who can kick well and has some experience fighting but in actuality is NOT a true tough guy.
One of the most accurate kicker în The WORLD, mouvie Guy or real fighter, = Van Damme. Lambert does not comprehend that u can be a mouvie Guy and a fighter. I Wonder What he Will Say about mouvie Guy Chuck norris, Who also was karate Champion în reality.
Yes it does make sense that they woul all beat him up. They were more professionaly into martial arts and they were real fighters, while JCVD was "just" an actor. He did compete, but that doesn't necessarily make him good enough. Sure he could fight, but he was still an actor. I bet Jet Li or even Donnie Yen would get beaten by some if not many guys in their team because often there are real fighters amongst them. As for the guys in the movie, I think the Turkish guy would be the best in real life.
I think Van Damme would have done pretty well I say he places third. I hate when people say he's a movie tough guy. Their has to be some legitimacy to it or no one would buy it. Van Damme was in amazing shape had some of the best kicks I've ever seen and does have a competitive background. Honestly in the eighties the only two "Hollywood toughguys" that had a chance against him were Dolph and Chuck.
I love van damme, but in all honesty he wouldn't fair well in a full contact kickboxing fight. He only had an amateur record in point fighting. But that doesn't take away from his skills as an martial artist in movies
Its just keeps getting more and more intriguing,i dont know about the juijitsu guy,but i think Stefanos probably would have beaten them all his wrestling was amazing, and Van Damme could have taken some of them ,i refuse to believe he couldn't have beaten some of them, but then again iv been a hardcore fan for 31 years.
People think not fighting professionally means Van Damme can't right. He could kick most people's asses. He made millions, banged Kyle Minogue, travelled the world and inspired millions. That's a win.
I don't think Van Damme would be able to brat them all in every instance, but I agree, he would hold his own. And he did fight in the ring, there's footage of it. It's well documented. Time to except that and drop the bullshit.
The most important thing is mindset, JCVD didnt have that fighter mindset, desire to hurt someone, he was amazing athlete, technicaly, strong, fast, he had all those predispositions but as he said about him self “I am not fighter, I am lover” or “fighting didnt make me happy at all” Thats huge difference from someone who just wanna damage your face, destroy you, he put whole his focus to it, hide his punches, working on fighting IQ with experiences, Van Damme on the other hand focused to make it look nice to watch, its just so different, but its not black and white, I dont claim he cannot fight at all, I am sure he could fight in his prime on some level, but you cannot compare it to some fighter which do it for living, its just another level.
I admire this guy and like his energy and his knowledge I mean is there a chance this movie was made so long ago that Stefanos wasn’t very good yet if that was the case maybe they’d have a chance against him somebody but still I doubt it
I would take what Steve lambert says about van damn with a grain of salt. He hates van damme because of that incident. Profession fighters doesn't necessarily mean who would win in a fight. It's just a job. If you trained your whole life. Like a fight was going to happen. You probably be able to beat a lot of professional fighters. There certain exercises a fighter goes through to build their ability to absorb damage. In my opinion you have to feel a few hard shots. So you know what to expect. On the other hand I believe taking a lot punches during sparring only makes you weaker to damage later. A man can only take so much before he begins to decline.
Facts i was tired of seeing the same moves in all his movies. I liked No Retreat No Surrender fight scene for all different moves he did in them. Quest was great
Interesting interview. But I have to agree with some of the subscribers here that I didn't think the 50 punch combo was as impressive as Lambert makes out. Anyone can be taught to throw a punch not everyone can do a balletic kick in the air like Van Damme. Thats what sets him apart from other movie martial artist. Even Scott Adkins has commented on how good his kicks look. To not do his trademark spinning kick would be like Arnie not saying, " I'll be back," in the Terminator movies.P.s. Your wrong about Hard target 2. As straight to video sequels go its very entertaining and action packed. Another good Scot Adkins film is Accident man. It has some great fights scene especially between Michael Jai Whie & Ray Park.
Before seeing the video, my opinion...who would have won the competition for real? Stefanos Miltsakakis. Later Edit about 15 mins later...allright, same opinion :)
JCVD’s full contact kickboxing record I BELIEVE is a bit “suspect” - I could be wrong, but I’ve heard from a few guys who used to be elite fighters in full contact back in the day
Great interview, loving it! Also, if the tournament was real my money would be on Abdel Qissi, Stephano (Greece) and I believe Van Damme would be in the top three.

He said Van Damme doesn't have a fight record, but he does have a fight record.
I’d still put my money on JCVD. Great content bud. Thanks for keeping us entertained 💪🏻💪🏻
Abdel is the brother of Michel Qissi the guy that played Tong Po in the KickBoxer movies in case anyone didnt know.
I loved the quest I watched it like 1000 times
Viking samurai was like PAUSE I love vandamme...let's talk about this separately lol 😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣
If Van Damme didn't do his patented helicopter kick and just threw the 50 punch combo, I would be very disappointed.
The 50 punch combo didnt even look good. This guy is a bad fight chore because he plays to the actors weakness not strength. Van dammes punches always looked weak compared to his kicks.
@@booty121212 Van Damme's finisher punch in Double Impact (only displayed in shadows) is one of the most powerful hits I've ever seen in a movie.
@@Peer165 absolutely but we all know van damme is an expert kicker though
@@booty121212 I agree, they were just your basic movie type punches, & if Van Damme actually threw 50 in a row (or anything close to that number) it would've looked ridiculous, laughable, even, the bad guy's going to just stand there while someone hits him 50 times?! And, as always, every move Van Damme threw had to be shown from at least 3, quick cutting, over-edited, camera angles, so you couldn't tell how many times he really through those punches anyway.
I never get tired of the helicopter kick.
Steve Lambert is on point. He has a great eye and his insights on the quest for fight scene made it a better movie
I don't think he could have beat all of them, but he definitely had way more size and athletic ability than many of them, he would have faired well.
And then there was Bill Goldberg in it.
Killing me with these segments! This interview is fantastic 👏
Hey, when will you finally invite JCVD in your programm?)
This book about historys from Lambert career is solid gold for sure.
I loved the Quest. Especially when it has Roger Moore.
Great series!
I would win. Have been competing most of my life .... Judo, Kyokushin and Wado competitions
Man I feel you! I'm a huge fan. But as a real martial artist I'm not surprised that Steven's opinion is Van Damme isn't consistent with real combat fight training, I mean every day fighting sparring. I get what he means.
Afcourse Van Damme wil win💪
eh.. calling van damme just a movie guy is bullshit.
Smh.
Agreed with everyone here. I don't think he likes Van Damme and he's letting his bias show.
@@wantutosigh1117 Van Damme is well known for hurting stunt men on purpose and being on Cocaine for most of productions look I love Van Damme he's in my top 5 action stars but I don't blame this guy for having bias especially after the punch Damme gave to him.
@@windandcloudshadow158 I understand. Plenty of people don't like him but there are plenty who do as well. He had a time in the mid-90's where I'm sure he didn't make many friends. However, him saying Van Damme would lose to everybody in the movie is him being petty and just throwing shade at JCVD cuz he doesn't like him.
I’d pick JCVD all day beating each one of them with jumping spinning 360 degree splits kicks!
Itwas the start of van dammes flop streak
@@booty121212 The start of his flop streak was right around this time, starting with 'The Quest' and going forward from there.
@@alwkicksta I think Lambert has something mentally going on with him. You could easily see that something is wrong with him on that video chat.
A damn good question. I never thought about it as a kid, but after watching it 2 days ago after 20 years, I pondered that very question.
I agree with Lambert, VD is a screen fighter more than anything, but in a real full contact fight I'd be surprised if he'd win any of the other guys. And I'm a fan, but I can see the difference.
Yes yes more interview👍
Damn Viking you posting these nice videos like van damme blockbusters in the 90s!
Viking Samurai, your videos are always 5/5 level and to the point :)
You know your stuff, unlike 95% of video makers here in TH-cam.
Thanks man, I really appreciate the kind words!
Viknig Samurai: Did you ever ask Steven Lambert about Chuck Norris´fighting abilities? He talked about Joe Lewis and Benny Urquidez but he didn´t say anything about Chuck Norris. But I know that he worked with Norris several times.
I can ask, going to talk to him again Saturday.
Van Damme, 100 percent
Seagal interview would be good man
Thanks again for this channel all my favorites as a kid
People are always hating JCVD, and i think it's because he's the real deal and people just want to talk shit, people talk shit about Bruce Lee and JCVD, well JCVD and Bruce Lee are the 2 best martial artist ever in my opinion.
I think Van Damme would win the tournament for real.
Love it... can't wait for the next. 👊
It’s always a good day When Viking uploads
I love van damme in my humble opinion he was a great athlete in great shape I just can't believe he would not be able to fight very well in reality. Great interview viking.👍👌
well Van damme was a legit karate black belt, plus trained in thailand a few times, I am sure he knows his stuff plus his kicks are perfect, with balance and control plus look at his muscles and frame if he was too hit a average dude hard that person is not getting up.
@@jonmacist the man in his prime was definitely a fighter
It's the guy who chopped the heavy wooden table in half with a single hammer fist.
a great supplementary video to this would be a quick 5 min biography video on who Lambert was. Im intrigued who and history is now..
Nice video man, just met ur channel because of the Stallone video, can you do a video on Carl Weathers body as Apollo in Rocky 2? He looks amazing
Ya, I do plan to cover Carl Weathers.
His old man is crazy and did that for purpose. Of course Vandamme would win
You ❤ Van Damme....we all do!
Wow. i love this man's insight. because that is my BIGGEST criticism of van damme.
Honestly i feel like he's hating on van damme
dear lambart we will never get tired of seeing van damme makes the same thing. the fights in the quest were no way better then his preveius work
Yes it does make sense that they woul all beat him up.
No disrespect but NOBODY is tired of seeing that kick.
Great interview and you handled it well when you could tell he was bitter to JCVD.
I love van damme, but in all honesty he wouldn't fair well in a full contact kickboxing fight. He only had an amateur record in point fighting. But that doesn't take away from his skills as an martial artist in movies
Van Damme was legit back in the day.
I admire this guy and like his energy and his knowledge I mean is there a chance this movie was made so long ago that Stefanos wasn’t very good yet if that was the case maybe they’d have a chance against him somebody but still I doubt it
My favorite Van Damme movie ever, followed by lionheart!
No audio book?
I would take what Steve lambert says about van damn with a grain of salt. He hates van damme because of that incident. Profession fighters doesn't necessarily mean who would win in a fight. It's just a job. If you trained your whole life. Like a fight was going to happen. You probably be able to beat a lot of professional fighters. There certain exercises a fighter goes through to build their ability to absorb damage. In my opinion you have to feel a few hard shots. So you know what to expect. On the other hand I believe taking a lot punches during sparring only makes you weaker to damage later. A man can only take so much before he begins to decline.
Nice interview
James Remar. Clearly.
Before seeing the video, my opinion...who would have won the competition for real? Stefanos Miltsakakis.
Later Edit about 15 mins later...allright, same opinion :)
JCVD’s full contact kickboxing record I BELIEVE is a bit “suspect” - I could be wrong, but I’ve heard from a few guys who used to be elite fighters in full contact back in the day
I enjoy your channel thanks for sharing. You have to remember Van Dam is a Movie Star Not a Fighter. It's funny I made my comment at 21:03.
Great interview, loving it!
Also, if the tournament was real my money would be on Abdel Qissi, Stephano (Greece) and I believe Van Damme would be in the top three.
Definitely Stefanos.
