I feel that way about advocating for the vaccines. Sure, a lot of people told me about how I've been lied to and the vaccines do nothing and actually hurt people and... so... on... But I really do think I helped ease so!e people over the line into getting at least somewhat protected from the worst of what COVID-19 can do. Two years and racing towards a million American deaths at the rate of 2,000 a day. It's hard to even comprehend. A million people is 1 in every 330 Americans or so. You might not know someone who died, but guarantee you know someone who knew someone, at this point. 😔

This is why atrocities happen. If I've learned anything from history it's that we can rationalize just about anything that's either in our interest or not personally impacting ourselves. It's kind of depressing.
humans are remarkable adapters. It's part of how we evolved and survived all the way until this point. During the time period where humans were still chimp-like primates, existing with other primate species, the one primate that survived of that group was the one that had the ability to adapt to the newly treeless landscape, and the other primates were too well adapted to their pre-existing environments. That one special primate had some kinda adapting advantage..... I wish I could find the documentary I learned about that in, but I've never been able to find it since. Anyway, didn't mean to delve into the actual evolution who's exact details I can't recall, but we are extreme in the ability to adapt department and knowing our evolution helps to understand why and how, and it's just all so interesting.

Isn't that just what a funeral home is? Like aren't funerals super expensive thats why I have life insurance? So God forbid if I die at work my family can bury my body and not be destitute? Hasn't this women made a video about how someone was trying to pull a business scam over buying caskets from her? Like ok this women runs a non profit. That doesn't mean we never take in any money it just means that we make just enough money to cover operating costs and salaries and a little extra left over I think she said in her case 10k as an operating budget and anything they make over that is probably donated so they can keep their non profit business status which puts you in a different tax bracket. Basically she ensures that her and her employees have jobs but also guarantees she won't ever be personally rich from her business alone. Being paid for speaking engagements and writing books on the topic is a completely different story though. Most funeral homes are for profit though. There's nothing wrong with it but it's just the economy. Supply and demand?

Caitlin, I want to thank you for giving me the ability to deal with my mothers dying. As the executor of her estate and having to get elbow deep in accepting this full in my face. If it wasn't for your differing videos I would have been way overwhelmed.
My condolences, I am not sure if I can relate while my grandparents are still alive but I feel it's a worthwhile topic to anticipate and put strategies for in place (will, funeral plans, insurance information ect. Accessible)

One of my sociology professors moonlighted as a candy striper on the graveyard shift in geriatric care during grad school and joked that "by day I was flipping through papers, by night I was flipping bodies" (to prevent bedsores). She was maybe 100 lbs soaking wet but became a skilled solo body flipper and post-mortem first responder. She was honestly one of the most compassionate people I've ever met, but you definitely cultivate some dark humor when working in these emotionally trying professions.

I deal with moving heavy, uncooperative things very often (construction worker), and I can't imagine how uncooperative a body is. No matter what it is I carry, you'll always be stronger in my book. It's terrible you've had to learn that skill, but it's good to know what you're capable of. Thank you for all you do.

I've been watching Caitlin for a While and I've never seen her seem so beat down. You can see it around her eyes and hear it in her voice (edit: on that note I respect her so much for keeping up this channel while dealing with such an upheaval in her career and in the world. I can't imagine a better way to respond to these circumstances)
She dealt with 5,000 bodies and the state of California not counting the undocumented in the death count

I've found that I've "gotten used to" the death numbers. Don't get me wrong, I'm still angry that so many people are dying because we couldn't get a handle on this pandemic in the U.S. It's just that I've heard the mass casualty numbers for so long that it's become the new normal. It shouldn't be but we get used to the shit hitting the fan after a while.
That damned evolutionary advantage of extreme adaptability is really kicking us.
I mean you have no choice, especially when it feels like you as an individual have no control or ability to change anything. If you'd feel shocked and upset every-time, you'd become so consumed with negative feelings, you'd become depressed, to be point where it can harm you.

On a call at the company I worked at last year some upper crust manager was heard saying that the company was set for the year in profits and anything else was icing on the cake. It was in May, and the manager thought they were muted. 🙃

Im a pagan (raised catholic) and I don't agree with the Christian religion or church on much, but this message made me feel so thankful for ministers and priests who are able to be there for their community, and do what they do out of genuine love of others. Even if that's just talking about it and praying for others. I will also pray for you Caitlin and your funeral home. Regardless of religion, death happens to everyone and should be mourned in peace and solidarity.
My dad was recently diagnosed with stage 4 kidney failure and given 3-4 weeks to live. I am SO appreciative of the positive, ‘good death’ information I’ve gotten from this channel over the last year or two. It’s making a horrible and heartbreaking situation easier. Thank you, Caitlin.

My friend used to say “People are taught to live, but not to die”. She felt death was treated like a disease that people wanted to treat or prevent, which cannot be done. RIP Iva.

Learning to have a good relationship with my own death was the biggest turning point in my adult life.
I used to think that I was suicidal a lot of the time. Then I had a transformational experience, just a deep honest conversation about death with two friends who actually LISTENED to me, and realized that I had never felt suicidal: I had felt trapped, and like an animal in a trap chewing its paw off to escape, I kept thinking of how to get out of the trap, even to the point of dying.
I had a huge realization that I OWN my life. If you own something, you have the right to destroy it if you want to. It doesn't mean that you should--we don't go crashing our cars just because we own them. But when their usefulness is over completely, we DO send them to a crusher, and yes, there might be another reason to crush a perfectly functional car. Like if someone was murdered in it, the crusher might be what the owner decided was important for them.
If I ever really am trapped, in my life, in pain, in misery that has no medical or psychological solution that *I* find acceptable, I have the right to decide to end the life that I own.
I've risked my life for someone else two times, and though those risks were not super-high, it proved to me that I'd be okay with that "threat of death". I've risked dangerous things in other ways. Death is fine, it's something I've thought too much about and yet, at least I'm not like my poor stepmother, who's unable to talk about death, she's so afraid of it. We do need to be comfortable with dying--it shouldn't be this isolated thing that we can't face head-on. That's just WEIRD. I find dead animals in the woods sometimes, and it's just a thing that happens to every living thing, sometime. In nature, in the woods, it means something else has started; the lives of what eats the dead. That's part of nature, it's a good thing.

I've been deprived of this for awhile and I realised it's one of the reasons I haven't been coping well for awhile. No one in my circle wants to do this, they just want to get on with their lives and kind of pass off everything I say with essentially "eh, you'll get over it", and turn a blind eye.
Going back to your point on being suicidal, I have been starting to realise that, yeah, I'm not actually wanting to die. It's just that I feel like I'm trapped in a situation I can't get out of, and the only way out is death. For this reason, I've started trying to take lead of my life and stand up for myself and not just accept things as they are and the way I've been brought up.
I'm still working on my relationship with death. There are some aspects of it that scare me, but I think it's good to talk about. As you say, it's a part of nature. We don't have to think about our own mortality everyday but at least be open to discussion about it.
I watched D’Angelo’s video about the despicable actions of celebrities and “influencers” having parties and socializing despite regulations and the mild penalties they’re receiving for it. We need to talk more about the entitlement and classism that is driving this situation

I am an embalmer. I am getting "you seem angry" alot lately. It makes me even more staby.
i work in a printing center and i get a “you seem angry” like 80 times a day. yes i am angry. i’m angry printing photos for customers who shouldn’t be leaving their homes unless it’s essential. i’m angry begging people to pull their mask over their nose, for fighting people to put a mask on in general. we are all tired, we’re all angry, and we will be for a LONG TIME.

@@10HW COVID is only included on the death certificate if it was the cause of (or a significant contributor to) death. If you test positive for COVID and commit suicide two weeks later, they're not just slapping COVID as the cause of death on your death certificate. Don't be stupid.
@@10HW That's not how it works. There was some confusion very early on because testing was limited and we didn't really understand the disease but at this point we've had a lot of practice and the tests being reported as COVID deaths ARE COVID DEATHS.
If anything, the issue we still have is that our numbers are being underrepresented due to inadequate testing.

I love your channel, as a English woman who has health issues that puts me at risk during this time, I have no fear of dying but did have a fear of what would happen to my family if it happens. My hubby has never really wanted to discuss this subject, I have written all my wishes out, this has been done over 9 years ago after having to go through this topic while in hospital. I finally got my hubby to watch one of your past videos and we have now got everything out in the open etc. I just wanted to thank you for helping me getting my hubby to not be scared of the topic and even understand why I don't see death as the end, but as a new adventure! me too. everyone's going through it right now in some degree or another, but the funeral care industry is a difficult one to stomach in a time like this. i cannot imagine how exhausted she must be. without people like her we would be completely stranded.

the funeral care industry can be heartless. it ruined my relationship with loss for a long time and if it weren't for reading caitlin's book and going down the rabbit hole of her content, i don't think i would've ever coped with it. death positivity is what we need, cutthroat capitalism is not. people are dying. people are working themselves to death to care for the dying and dead. anyone in a position of power that isn't taking action right now is basically admitting they failed, so they better get used to that idea and start asking for help. bridge has already been crossed, mate. you guys already failed.

I appreciate all that you are all doing. We lost our Mother at the beginning of January and she won't be able to be buried until middle of March. And this is with her funeral all being prepared years ago. It was all paid for so many years ago they no longer made the casket she wanted. I helped lift my dad's dead body to put into a body bag. Zipping it over his face was the worst as that's in every movie when someone dies. I wish I could forget it. It haunts me.

My sister-in-law died in July, of Covid. We couldn’t attend the funeral due to limits on gatherings. We still haven’t had my grandmother’s funeral, and that was January. She didn’t die of Covid-she was 103-but my mom and aunt are both immunocompromised. And my aunt can’t be vaccinated, so we wait. But she has been buried, with my brother in attendance. And the funeral home was so compassionate.
I think binging on your channel has been therapeutic for me. I’m slowly getting closure.

Katrina survivor here...you aren’t lying!!! My father went out in a boat with a neighbor to help rescue folks. They had to drive that boat by bodies floating to get to people trapped in their attics and on their roofs 😞😔
I had friends with the Canadian D.A.R.T team just ready to go help. They were tying up their boots way before you saw any response in the U.S. They have equipment and supplies. They can pump water from a sewage plant tank and make it clean drinking water. We train them, we pay them, they just wanted to do their job and help. They were told the U.S. felt it would be too embarrassing.

Having dealt with the death of my Dad two weeks ago, I feel extremely lucky that I could have his body taken care of quickly. I may have to wait to bury his cremains, and wait to be able to gather to mourn- but I am relieved that the most important part has been done. I wish that for all the families that are struggling right now. It hurts to know that isn't a reality. Keep advocating Caitlin and know you ARE making a difference.

Capitalism is NOT good at getting things done, and done well. It's good at extracting profit from a situation. And profit is resources and money, that could have otherwise gone to doing something else, like the job in question. But instead it goes to shareholders and rich men. Your videos have always been a great comfort to me, your generosity and compassion for the dead has made me laugh, cry, reminisce, and hope for others who have lost their beloved ones.

Will the pain and loss go away, no. Life will be different from this moment on. From experience I know that this will make you stronger. Stronger for your parents and your family. It’s not a position you asked to be in, but you are now a pillar to hold up your family.
