  • Things are bad in Los Angeles.
If you want to help, and live in the Los Angeles area, we ask that you contact your local government representatives to express your displeasure at the lack of government aid for funeral homes, death care workers, and grieving families in Los Angeles.
Here are some ways you can find your local representatives' contact info:
    www.lacity.org...
    www.laalmanac.c...
    Press enquiries: taraatthegooddeath@gmail.com
At this time, we ask that you do not contact our funeral home to offer support. We appreciate your desire to help but 100% of our energy has to be focused on serving the people in our care. Thank you.

Thing is is that the government isn’t giving enough “handouts”, 2 stimulus checks in a year isn’t enough to keep most working class families afloat and certainly isn’t enough to keep people who lost their jobs afloat. We need 2,000 dollar a month checks for the poor, working and middle classes, a New Deal size employment initiative building new, better medical structures and as Caitlin said more support for small funeral homes.

If you ask the medical workers themselves, I think you'll find that despite public declarations and the usual "thoughts and prayers", they aren't receiving any additional support either. "Recognition" didn't mean that healthcare workers got comprehensive insurance, fair wages, tolerable conditions, or even 40 hour work weeks. Or for that matter, adequate access to PPE or even vaccination - there's been hospitals that used up their initial alotment to vaccinate ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF before any even reached doctors or nurses.
My point isn't your gf is better off than medical staff, my point is, the government and corporations have been effing everybody over, everywhere, while simultaneously dropping the ball on everything since this pandemic started. It's a disgrace for sure, but it should also be a wakeup call.

@@tracytrebilcox you kind of have to go further. Need to share it on the city and county level.the local level needs to know what they are doing isn't adequate, the county level needs to know the city's aren't adequate, the state needs to know and then the federal government that actually has the resources and yes the plans for this type of disaster response everyone needs to know and make their requests.
They'd like to do what Italy and New York city did and "we get to it when we can get to it". Then it's not so "in your face" to all of the public, however those methods had dead loved ones waiting a week at home to be picked up and freezer truck backlogs. Only the people that suffered losses know how it went. It stayed in the background.
I'm in south florida. In our peak which wasn't that bad compared to NYC or LA, the extra ambulances came in the middle of the night with lights and sirens off to collect bodies from my neighborhood when most everyone was sleeping. I'd see them coming and going when I had the dog out. My neighborhood is off the beaten path a medical van stands out. But that's how they were doing it here, creeping in the middle of the night to make collections from the houses trying to keep it unnoticed by as many as possible. It's what they all will do unless people make them do it.
It ain't pretty either way though. They gonna come, take the corpse catalog it creamate and drop off a box of ashes, if they go that far. All you might actually get is the death recorded and them taking the body which would be the disaster plan with mass casualties. Catalog and cremate and it's done and no funeral for closures. Of course you could hold a memorial or something still.
The federal government has a plan in place for something like this. I think it's the optics and the results as to why the government doesn't want to go there because it's going to be handled cold and efficiently.

Over the last year Democrats complained about Trump taking actions too harsh one moment, and then not hard enough the next. I'm tired of partisan politics. I just hope the Republicans don't behave like the Democrats did with Trump and spend all their energy trying to make Biden look bad rather than spend it helping the American people. Trump's press sec was constantly lambasted for not wearing a mask, but Biden's does the same thing? Silence from the media.
Why can some groups gather in the thousands during a pandemic that is killing thousands upon thousands and they are supported by the media and political class despite causing billions in damage to the people who are most affected by the pandemic? It's funny she mentions that because Amazon works much in the same way as Federal response works. At amazon, it starts with you and me the end customer, or what I'll say the local official requesting resources. From there Amazon looks to its own resources to see if it can fulfill the request, or if it has to reach outside of its current resources and acquire more. That's how Federal response works. Local officials make a request to the county, or state, and that liaison to FEMA makes their request for resources. What I'm most interested in seeing is if California even made the requests. Until we can see what California officials asked for there's no way to assign blame. "Staple yourself to the order," would be the principle that I would use to see if these requests for assets were made. If they were never made, then the blame belongs squarely with local and state officials. If they were made we can ask the feds why they weren't fulfilled in a timely fashion. Amazon would have the ability to follow an order from start to finish, I'm willing to bet state and local officials, and FEMA can do the same.

When supplies ran low in stores, Amazon jacked up its prices (I know, supply and demand) and made desperate people sell a kidney (not really) in order to get toilet paper or cleaning supplies because people were panic buying things they didn't have to. Amazon could have donated money and supplies, which I think they did, but Jeff Bezos and his multi-billions could have done more.

Those who think it's fake or a conspiracy would just say she's a crisis actor or some shit. It's people who can't come to terms with the reality of covid and would prefer to cling to delusions than face the truth. Not sure if it's denial or they're genuinely deluded. Makes me think of some folks who refuse to acknowledge that a loved one died because saying it makes it real. Reality is too harsh and unforgiving so it's easier to handle by bending it to your will. However, not accepting what's going on with covid is a very different situation and can kill people. We don't have the luxury of allowing ourselves or others to play pretend when it comes to this. It's too dangerous.

You don't have to lose someone in this shite to be overwhelmed by the deaths if your actually HANDLING THE DEAD IN THE MIDST OF A WAVE[CHRISTOPHER KIDWELL!] I once buried people for a living and a normal rate could be one a week or several over two weeks. Rarely in the summers I worked did we have a break from it. So I'm trying to imagine what covid based burials and what being swamped with burials almost everyday would have been like. It's not that easy - startup capital for a non-profit is hard enough to get, but for a temporary non-profit will be doubly difficult. You'd need to coordinate with any number of funeral homes to understand their capacities in order to handle logistics for divvying up bodies to use their retorts. You'd need to contract with teams of drivers who can handle potentially hazardous remains (which they're not used to since, as Caitlin often reminds us, normally corpses are not hazardous). Then there's the practicals of working with even the most altruistic of governments, for instance getting LAND to place your temporary refrigeration units and mobile cremators if needed, especially when everyone would want such an operation to exist ANYWHERE but near their own homes. With the region seeing unprecedented levels of deaths, there won't be any excess inventory of unused mobile cremation machines, so where do you rent them, and then how do you get them to the LA area? Even with quotas on cremations lifted, there are issues with ensuring everything is properly setup for ventilation / other environmental issues that still need to be addressed (runoff? CO from the retorts?). How fast can one contract with a liquid propane company to get the quantity of deliveries necessary in such a short period of time, since cremations guzzle fuel? Where do you get staff for the retorts, let alone funding? Then you need to market this entire operation to get people to use the phone bank, so they know the program exists - that can take weeks to build up that kind of awareness in the community. Given the PHI concerns, a website wouldn't be quick or cheap to build. Asking for a "fast track" for death certificates sounds like it would be one of, if not the, biggest bottlenecks for such an operation.
12 months was more than enough time... but I'm not sure any of us could pull this off in 1 month even with the full dedication of the local government. Perhaps one of the large corporate funeral home chains could do this, since they'd already have the communications, data, staffing, technology, land, equipment, legal knowledge, and government access (that only big $ can provide).... but asking them to step up to the plate is laughable :/

They don't even have restrictions on long term travels or even any form of policies to protect people from each other. Not all schools work at home through distance learning, aka MSO/ My School Online. Mostly all in Florida are half and half. Half of the students online and the other half on school grounds. It is because DeSantos threatened staff that the state will cut education funds (as if it wasn't low already) even further if school don't reopen. Truly this country doesn't care about education and even less cares about the kids. It angers me, because I may not get sick from it, but I could kill someone due to caring it and not knowing about it. 😪😔 I don't want to be the cause of anyones' death. This is one of the most upbeat people in a very morbid business - PLEASE listen to her.

She is not just angry, she is on the verge of tears in most of this. I can't... I just don't know what to say. I never thought I'd see this. She is more then fair in this critique of how this has been happening/handled.

    Well said.
As a nurse I am totally behind what you are saying.
My heart goes out to the families of those who have passed.

"The corpses don't lie." You're so right, and I'm so sorry this is happening. Take good care of yourselves, everyone. Hope this helps the algorithm so this video gets seen.

The passion in her voice is one of the few things that still makes me believe in real people, despite the handling of this pandemic - not just in the US, but at a global level. Keep fighting and stay safe, everyone.

Remember several years ago when all the conspiracy talk was about plastic interment bins that would 'hold four bodies at least, apiece' - and they were piled up alongside railroads out in the middle of nowhere? Seems like a good time to actually use the military and those things to take care of what is obviously a 'mass casualty event'.
