How is Mr.BoyPorridge and Ms.GirlGrule doing
I think that if Tumblr introduced PowerPoint compatibility with their lives, that would be successful. Tumblr would go crazy for PowerPoints.
the meme potential would go so hard
REAL
Oh my god you're so right
I would finally get tumblr if they did that
Yes, please, more of that, thank you.
the fact that the tumblr CEO is an Elon Musk fanboy really tells you everything you need to know
Yeah that tracks.
OKAY THAT MAKES SENSE NOW. Especially with that fucked up update to the desktop layout.
Ugh. That would explain literally everything.
First Reddit, now Tumblr. Techbros flat-out don't deserve rights at this stage.
blergh of course he is 🤢
"Speed dating with an audience" is absolutely the first group activity in HELL
So does that mean if you get to heaven you get to be in the audience?
Funniest thing is that’s like it’s own entire genre on tiktok live
It sounds like the premise of a shitty teen dystopia
ive never read a sequence of words scarier than speed dating with an audience
yeah I legit fucking GAGGED about that BS
I think having tumblr live on my dashboard really wouldnt annoy me so much if it wasnt so "hot women in your area coded"
Agreed! 😂
Agreed, if the live feature was recommending people/tags that you followed or it was based on your past searches it wouldn't be so bad, but every time I use the app it looks like there's a sketchy banner ad to some webcam site across the top of my dashoard. It's pretty jarring.
the live preview only consisting of hotjessica87's boobs really gave me flashbacks to trying to watch tv shows from illegal streaming websites that didn't allow adblock
genuinely actually for real
i was too young for tumblr but too old for amino lmao
The CEO gleefully giggling while asking "how much would you pay for that?" in response to someone saying they wanted to remove tumblr live made my blood pressure spike.
least evil ceo
that convinced me that tumblr is no longer worth it and now i hope it shuts down. honestly ive hoped for its downfall for a while now bc everything on it, from the community to the websites design, is trash. it used to be so fun but now everything on it is either stupid, annoying, or both
@@ketaminepoptartsit took you THIS LONG to realize tumblr is a dumpster fire?
@@ketaminepoptartsyou’re on the wrong side dawg you gotta find the people that are trash in the exact way you are and hang with them. You still gotta tolerate a lot of bullshit but isn’t that how any encounter with a large group of people goes
Cannot wait for Matt to have a bad fall
ngl streaming a blank wall for a few hours sounds like a bit that tumblr would normally love if weren't for the rest of the weirdness
I was just thinking that lmao. Like, if people got into Tumblr Live, that broadcast would have hundreds of thousands of views with people making memes out of everything. Like, a fly would come onto the screen for two seconds and then your dashboard would be flooded with "FLY ATTACK" or something ironically stupid like that.
honestly sounds like that would create a plato's cave-type following
Remember the jackson hole live stream?
tumblrinas would unironically LOVE to watch a stream of paint drying or something.
Honestly that's kind of similar to some of the shit I see on TikTok live. I was scrolling and saw someone just streaming a Michael Cera shrine, not even talking to the chat. Just Michael Cera. Very old school tumblr to me, I'd probably be interested in it if it were more like that.
nothing says tumblr user like an instinctive fear of beautiful women
celibacy gif
A surprising overlap with reddit and 4chan users
Tumblr is a giant mossy rock in the forest and the userbase are the creepy-crawlies living under it
Tumblr live in this metaphor are equivalent to some snotty brat upturning the rock and disturbing the userbase
either because they're gay or because they're gay
@@katsucandy _did you mean: _*_Pandora's box_*
Every time I open tumblr today, I think about that post from a few years ago saying how logging on and blocking porn bots from your blog is the Internet equivalent of waking up and pulling weeds from your garden. Because that’s what I do. Every day. I wake up and report at least a dozen porn bots.
honestly i stopped reporting them, i'm so tired
It seems to have come back in the last few weeks as I saw a sharp increase in the amount of bots who have followed me
Mine are often just blank blogs, I don't get that, are they planning to start posting bot content at some point?
I collect the lovely ladies with the funniest usernames and keep them in my followers as trophies
I actually don't get that many. Idk how they work, but I'm suspecting it might be because I put in my bio that I'm aro/ace. I've only ever gotten two to three bots.
If they had introduced this feature at the peak of tumblr mob utopia in like 2014, Strange would have drama and unhinged controversy materials to pay the bills well into her 80s 😭 People would be streaming digging up graves or hissing at people in destiel cosplays for sure.
lol 🤣
'streaming digging up graves' i just got deja vu
tumblr: you aren't allowed to have anything adult in your streams or we'll ban you
also tumblr: but before that we're going to use your streams as clickbait despite the fact that it's clickrepellent on our webbedsite
I feel like if Tumblr just like- Did a Wikipedia-esq "Hey would you mind donating to help keep us going?" Tumblr users would actually go along with it.
The way they're implementing Tumblr Live is so antithetical to Tumblr that it's no fucking wonder everyone despises it.
Some users would. (I'm already paying for ad-free in hopes of keeping the hellsite around a little longer.)
Some other users, however, like to reblog posts that sound like "frembly remember that one staff member likes hp and aot and that means tumblr is an official terf nazi site and if you give them money you're an official terf nazi and I'm going to kill you".
... Well, they did introduce a "tumblr supporter" badge that actually works kinda like this, so we'll see how it goes. I suspect that that second group of users is making it less effective than it could have been.
@@wingedcatgirl(…that one was actually more like "one user joked about someone from staff liking hp being the reason perfectly innocent posts made by trans women get disproportionately flagged while actual hatespeak and other stuff breaking the content rules stays up, only for staff to then nuke the entire blog from the website, including all reblogs“ which is. Yknow. A lot more shady.)
EDIT:: nvm it was not that innocent
The posts I’ve seen were all going the tone of "why give money to people who show they actively hate your existence“.
The main pushback against the support badges seems to come from them being an unironic attempt at cloning Twitter blue, right after making fun of them via checkmarks. …and also not wanting to support a website that barely works.
Though given that this is tumblr (and some of the DNI’s I‘ve seen) there’s also bound to be some people who unironically think "you once sent a message to someone who followes them and that so you’re exactly like that“ like you said.
Given the prevalence of checkmarks, the support crowd would still be pretty big though - they might just have to give something that’s actually wanted for once in return.
@@_-insertname-_ the partyjockers post that got taken down said that "AoT freaks" and HP fans like the tumblr employee they screenshotted were the reason there were still nazis and terfs on the site, and got tens of thousands of notes in a few hours on a post that directed an avalanche of harassment at that one staff member. That's a lot more than "one user joked about staff liking HP." (i did a deep dive into that one when I was looking up the info about the ToS to write the post mentioned in the video.)
@@ms-demeanor nvm then, that does sound pretty bad. Oof. I mean, still kinda iffy they’re showing that they have the capabilities to actually do something against hate and apparently just choose not to, or directly nuking the whole blog, but. Yeaaa that is. A lot more of a reason to get rid of a post.
"Category ten piss on the poor moment" is something I'm absolutely adopting into my vocabulary (at least for Tumblr purposes).
Looking forward to the inevitable follow up video titled "Tumblr's Lawyers Wrote To Me, Then It Got Worse".
i love how this video is borderline investigative journalism
_borderline..?_ this is def the real deal, mr straenge does not ness around with tumblr lore
I feel like Strange has just sort of taken the weird backroads to being an actual investigative journalist/ tumblr historian.
including the getting assassinated by political opponents
@@SHRUGGiExyz ngl it actually is. i remember doing something like this in college for my investigative journ class, especially with the methodology used. it's pretty great!
I hate that all social media sites try to be other social media sites. If i would wanna watch live streams id do that on a video streaming platform. I dont wanna see real people on tumblr. Tumblr is my anonymous, wacky safe space. Tumblr live just makes me sad.
And the worst thing about it is the bright "new" on the icon that doesn't go away.
Yes, and I don’t care if the TOS says that it collects similar data to other websites, I don’t use those websites for that reason, and I’d like tumblr to make their money off of users who want to push them to a more privacy-focused model!
this reminds me of the way discord got rid of the really fun discord tag system for a more boring username system
I mean I guess it probably makes it easier to moderate sometimes but I still loved having a unique 4 digit number assigned to me
Tumblr is our weirdo place for weirdo people, watching all these influencer -ish people in here is like watching Kim Kardashian walk into a furry convention and set up shop
if you're using desktop you can block the 'new' part, or the whole icon altogether using an adblocker like ublock orgin! just right click and hit 'block element.' I know a lot of people use mobile but I hope this helps
@@miajajajajajajajajajongl I’d pay good money to see that. But mostly because seeing fursuiters get pictures with her would be so bizarre.
the streamers saying "welcome to tumblr" to father strange of all people is so insanely absurd to me, I cant stop laughing
That's Mr Father Strange to you >:(
@@ElliWoelfin It's true, I was the long furby
I really want to know if the tumblr CEO is aware of how much more traction they would get if tumblr went back to allowing NSFW Content.
They destroyed my entire business and income by banning NSFW content and the same goes for loads of other people I know who sold the same sort of risqué photography through tumblr for years. Tumblr was a safe space and other places like OF or instagram just aren’t the same. They’re full of slimy people who post your content on Reddit and dox you.
Wasn't NSFW content removed because of apple? I think they wouldn't let the tumblr app on the apple store because of it... which is kinda bullshit since it si incredibly easy for kids to find porn anyway
Well, as far as I know, Tumblr only did this in response to Apple. From 2018-2020, Apple had basically threatened a bunch of apps like Tumblr and Discord that they would be removed from the app store if they did not outright prohibit NSFW content. Obviously since the app store is where a lot of their user base comes from, they obliged. All because Apple is incredibly anti-LGBT, sex work, and etc cetera.
it's that tumblr was already on the app store and they had to shift to obeying updated apple rules so they could remain on the app store, not be allowed onto it in the first place. i had the tumblr app on an iphone before the porn ban. @@Ghoulicus
@@marbles_machine I don't think it's because of what the people at Apple believe about LGBT or sex work, it's likely because of advertisers not wanting to advertise next to porn. Imgur is getting hit by this now too, they're deleting NSFW stuff like crazy.
the weird thing is if it hadn't looked like a different website and like i would totally get a virus if I used it, I'd prob enjoy streaming fun little zine making videos and halloween crafts. Like they didn't customise what it looked like and that really kind of damaged the chances of regulars using it because I think most of us are sort of scared to even click onto it in case we get scammed.
Exactly! There are so many creative users on Tumblr who could use Live for more than just streaming games and commentary.... But even I don't want to click on it with hot spammy it looks.
yeah seriously!!! i was watching this whole video like “god streaming myself doing crafts and stuff actually sounds so fun!! if i could like actually get like a community out of it and people didn’t just immediately assume i was a scammer”
same!! i’d be tempted to do little digital art streams if it wasn’t so very…. this
Exactly!!! I knit and cozy knitting livestreams would be fun??? But it’s SO SKETCHY so I’m not gonna touch it lol
I was just thinking this! id love to just sit with a sketch book and vibe with people but it looks and feels like a sexy porn site lol
I love how the audio filter to hide the streamer's identities makes them kinda sound like extremely chill eldrich beings of some sort.
I had a friend who interviewed to work for Automattic and apparently they're a HOT mess. The only reason they have Tumblr still is because the CEO views it as his little pet project and keeps swearing he can make it profitable. The devs basically have the freedom to do whatever the hell they want if he doesn't notice but stuff like Live were 100% his idea. My friend's interviewer didn't seem to think it was a good idea but Matt has spoken (apparently he's also a shitty boss but that's neither here nor there)
not surprised to hear he's a shitty boss tbh
Matt gives me "i want to be elon musk but i cant fake being a world reowned genius so ill just act closer to a low grade lowtax" vibes. Its some of the most disingenuous shit ever lol at least bezos hides away and doesnt act like a cringe shithead on the internet
honestly just the thing in their console log is something to not walk but run away from. it's like "hey you have basic knowledge of how to look at the guts of a webpage here is a link to a job application." which i thought was funny so i clicked on it expecting an application for tumblr specifically but it was for the whole parent company basically saying "if we hire you we'll put you wherever we want lol"
@@cyanidenightshade Hah, at least the rest of SA managed to convince lowtax to sell the site when he became too toxic. If you haven't kept up on your SA drama, his ex-wife posted from a women's shelter that she had left him after he got drunk and beat her more than once; and it eventually came out that his previous ex left for the same reason. This led to a site-wide "this can't go on but we're not quite sure what the next step is" that eventually ended up with him selling the entire operation for an undisclosed sum.
I have no idea what sort of person Jeffrey of YOSPOS (the current owner) is - rumor is that he paid with money earned from being a lucky early bitcoin guy - but at least no terrorized former partners have shown up so far.
Once again we're at the mercy of boring, mediocre assholes.
By far the most frustrating part of Tumblr Live is having to go in and snooze it every seven days. Just let me disable the damn thing
100,000% agree
Tumblr doesn't believe in "good updates".
In the US, I can no longer snooze tumblr live. It’s permanent now as of August 2023.
If only we hadn’t run off the xkit guy,….
It's 30 days now! At least for the dashboard. The button has never gone away for me
Somebody told whoever is naming the porn bots the convention of two random words pushed together as a tumblr url and they've gotten wild recently. in one singular day I was followed by drowning-firebox, sociable-penalty, and fetal-setter
My friend won Tumblr bot names, they got one called awed-homosexual. Genuinely mad at how good some of the bot names are lately
judicialinconvience and attractingslobber were my favorite that i’ve gotten
I got rubbery-garter today
mine were strapping-market, distinguishedbearfestival and wizardofgaysex
I got starving-prostate and a friend got wrinkled-pickle. Amazing
"Obviously it's fine that people are straight and Christian // As Long As They Don't Do it In Front Of My Children...//"
I didn't even know there were actual users of tumblr live, Let's be real, I thought actual tumblr users collectively agreed to never ever touch it.
For real, I genuinely thought that as well. I follow so many people, but I've only had _one_ like last month say she was going to try live. One out of the hundreds I could potentially see, and it's been over a year since its launch.
I find it fascinating how pretty much all of the users of tumblr proper just ignore tumblr live/treat it like a parasite, and how most of the tumblr live users just ignore “the blog part” right back. It’s like it’s an entirely different social media platform entirely just Frankensteined onto tumblr, like a second head operating completely independently, which, if you think about it, is kinda the most tumblr way to incorporate a streaming platform. I support them, they’re like a benign cancer
i also kinda love that it too failed to be anything close to mainstream and now has a close knit casual community because there's zero capability for profits or popularity like that's just so tumblr
Let's all love our benign cancer, as a life threatening tumor we're kind of their big sibling yk
It's like the social media equivalent of an adaptation/sequel that attracts a completely different audience which might not even know the original exists and creates a cultural divide. The My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic or Persona 5 of websites.
You were too close to the truth and Tumblr had to quarantine you
It’s so funny that the only way to turn tumblr live off is to do investigative journalism
For what it's worth, Twitch, Kick, and TH-cam heavily favor gaming and react content and will never promote a small tiny random person ever. It's kind of nice that people who are completely outside of that sphere can still set up a cam and shoot the shit with randos. The normies need their streaming sites too, not just us poisoned freaks
Ye!
I really wanted to start streaming my knitting and cross stitch but couldn't find a platform where I would get any traction doing that. It's all video games or bust 😢
@@jamiecoull7081 The earliest gaming streams I'm aware of were literally done over Skype, to an audience of 5 to 10 friends from a paid forum. Somehow, this spiraled out of control into a billion dollar industry. Who's to say knitting streams can't do the same thing?
Seeing all these "mainstream influencer" -ish accounts appear on tumblr, the weirdo place for weirdo people, is like watching Kim Kardashian walk into a furry convention and set up shop
Like the lotus-eaters - we will assimilate them to our weirdo ways.
@@pattheplanter it's a matter of time...
This is an amazing investigative adventure. It’s not gonzo journalism, it’s bingus journalism
I have to say it's quite interesting that Tumblr's streaming currency situation is one of the most convoluted and opaque ones I've seen. They clearly want it to be a cash cow.
It's really obvious that they want to make it as purposely confusing as they can to hide how much of a cut they take. If 0.0025 cents gets you a diamond, a full cent gets you 400. 40k diamonds is $400, but the streamer only gets $100, meaning that SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT is being taken.
I think Fortnite pioneered the "multiple layers of funny money" and it trickled down to other companies because it's scary profitable.
@@spooky6703 not to forget the "converting diamonds back to credits"-thing
@@spooky6703 I thought twitch was as bad, but looking it up right now:
A twitch bit is apparently worth 1 US cent, and streamers can exchange them 1:1 - but as a viewer you pay a 30% premium to buy them. That seems surprisingly fair, especially in comparison to this.
@@spooky6703Thats so fucking greedy wtf
As soon as you explained the credits to diamonds process, I realized; this isn't a twitch clone, it's a tiktok live clone
You did more for marketing tumblr live in this video than tumblr has done in its entire time of existence. I can imagine why live streaming can be a normal form of social media - people want to interact with other people, live! Like real life! For me, continuously interacting with another person devoid of context sounds like hell, but glad to know it's got actual value.
I'm sure that tumblr live isn't for me but I'm honestly glad to know that it isn't as "hot girls in your area" as it seems and that one person saying how they loved it for the same reasons I love tumblr was really reassuring. Who knows? maybe it could integrate itself into "real tumblr"... also I'm not necessarily opposed to tumblr finding ways to make itself profitable because I would like to continue using it, I just wish they would figure out better ways other than trying to be tiktok and/or twitter.
Honestly I think tumblr live could have been really succesfull if they'd just marketed it right. Like, if they leaned into the whole small community with niche streaming topics instead of marketing porn on everyones dashes, I think it would have had a real chance.
I also don't think it's to late to change their route? Like despite the fact that they've been fucking up real bad this past year, it wouldn't be hard to reform tumblr live into something more tumblr-y. Like, just redesign the look of it, remove the leaderboard and stop pushing the nsfw content down everyones throats and boom, suddenly it's something people might actually be interested in using, or at least checking out.
Idk sometimes I kinda wish we could just sit the CEOs down and have a long ass talk to them in person about how they could fix their shit, because it's honestly not a bad idea. Like you said it's attracting people to tumblr for the same reasons that we stay on it despite it's many flaws, so obviously there's something there worth pursuing, if only we could make the money-hungry men in charge see where improvements could be made.
@@tyraoqvist350 yeah, honestly? I already enjoy finding small cozy game or crafting streamers on youtube and if some furby customizer or artists started using tumblr as that kind of platform i'd be interested. The main reason I still, at the moment, wouldn't use it over another platform is the opaqueness of the monetary aspect. I don't want to buy a site currency and use it for a streamer unless i have some sense of how much they're getting out of it
yess i agree with all of this
@@amberbydreamsart5467 As somebody who's been around video games and that industry long enough, as soon as I heard how the monetary system works every single "digital casino" flag went off in my head all at once. Obfuscating how much you're spending by converting real money into monopoly bucks? Red flag number one. Washing that money through another system buying "gifts" to further disconnect its value in your brain? Red flag number two. Making it even more unclear by then converting to yet another fake currency that streamers cash in for an undisclosed conversion rate? That's like three strikes just in that one sentence!
If it was better implemented, more clear on how the streamers are incentivized and compensated, and less "hot cis-hetero-normatives in your area," it would probably be great. If I were scrolling down my dashboard and saw something like "50 hour 3d printing ASMR stream" advertised, I'd be all over it. But instead, we got the chatbot ad at the top of the screen.
it's kind of lovely that some people genuinely like the vibe of tumblr for streaming and find it more fun and comfortable
I don't get it even a little bit, but it's nice to hear!
Yeah I don't get it either
Especially bc they described it in the same way that most of us would describe tumblr. Small, cozy community with little to no drama. Like that's one of the reasons most people have for enjoying tumblr, that it doesn't really have that competitive aspect of most social medias.
@@FunctionallyLiteratePerson I guess they are similar to the people that enjoy making phone calls instead of sending messages. They exist, I can logically follow their reasoning, but I rarely agree.
Whatever you want to say about tumblr live itself, that gift system is EXTREMELY shady; they’re pretty clearly trying to obfuscate the cut the company’s taking, while using big numbers to make gifts look more impactful than they are
Hearing all this honestly makes me feel like the biggest issue with Tumblr Live is just that it doesn't feel like it's actually tumblr and that's putting a lot of the normal user off. Like if it didn't feel like this weird MLM discount twitch then maybe the regular userbase would use it.
theres something unspeakably wholesome about a girl who started streaking to promote her OF content ending up just baking on live be ause she likes the community so much
What is horrifyingly hilarious to me about MeetMe is that "two people date while an audience watches and comments" is a plot point in the dystopian novel Landscape With Invisible Hand (as well as the movie adaptation). These guys created the torment nexus.

Tumblr isn't for influencers, it's for weirdos who just wanna have a place to vibe
It's like an online third space
This is weirdly making me miss the days of Chatroulette. There were a lot of freaks & perverts on there (sometimes in really fun ways though, like one guy who was dressed as Batman and stayed in character the whole time), but there were also plenty of times when you’d get matched up with a random person halfway around the world and have some really cool conversations.
i would never use tumblr live simply for the fact that all of my social media is anonymous. i'm my truest self on tumblr, and i don't want to risk my online insanity and obsessions being found by irl people. those are two separate worlds, and never the twain shall meet.
GOD this really echoes the ancient "fandom side vs hipster side" wars of 2010
Aww, thanks, I like my URL. I made it myself :)
Also FYI the "bootyshorts" issue with tags that aren't searchable has been addressed by zingring, tumblr's coo, and it's apparently an issue from the yahoo days that they're working on resolving slowly (so for instance you can't search tgirl at the moment but you can search tboy; they are slowly unfucking the giant list of stuff that was messed up but that kind of thing largely has to be done manually and can take a long time)

Sidenote about your shadowbanned thing, I 100% believe I was shadowbanned because USUALLY (not saying this to blow smoke up my own arse) I get at least some decent-ish notes on gif posts I make. And I got 0, maybe I'd get 1 but that was once in a blue moon, even the stuff I reblogged wasn't getting notes. My partner couldn't see my posts on tumblr, it was WILD. I searched my username and it didn't come up at all, I know that that's a "tactic" to see if you're shadowbanned. So I emailed Tumblr about it and they're like "your tumblr is working now, weird, and you weren't shadowbanned! All good!" like yay my account now works again, but tf you doing trying to gaslight me.
So much of tumblr's appeal nowadays is that it's the one platform you can really use anonymously. Your employer isn't gonna look for your tumblr like they might search your Facebook or Twitter. And sharing your personal photos or videos isn't like, commonplace, as it is on Instagram and Tiktok. I have no fucking idea why the staff or CEO thought the users would ever pivot to livestreaming. Tumblr users are the most introverted lurkers ever.
If they do a Halloween special Tumblr Dead, bank loans paid back in a day.

Tumblr would be a lot more profitable if they actually listened to the feedback of their community tbh.
Profitability has nothing to do with the community and everything to do with corporate advertising.
@@sanguillotine Exactly! the userbase has proved over and over again that they wont support the website with their own money so advertising is their only option.
To be honest if the site was managed better and the management felt like they actually cared about their userbase I wouldn't mind throwing in a bit of money to support it, it'd be like Wikipedia or AdBlock where it feels like something that makes the internet better and not just tech dudes trying to weasel into our pockets

My art account got shadowbanned after I started DMing a mutual (where I never DM from that blog, always my main). I find it funny it happened after just seven messages though instead of some higher number. At least when I got shadowbanned, it was for queuing hundreds of posts in a lot quicker succession than normal (apparently)
@@sillypplproductions2 yeah exactly! I feel like whatever algorithm they have set on that is a bit too trigger-happy lately. I still have no idea what exactly got me shadowbanned, just this hunch, they never told me lol
It’s very tumblr of them to punish people for interacting with other users and just straight up using the site. Way to discourage people 😂
"no bathing suits if indoors" is so funny to me idk why
It's like indoor swimming pools aren't a thing. Though I guess it would be odd to stream in one
Thank you, Father Strange, for going through and setting us straight about that post on Tumblr Live. I was definitely one of many fooled myself. (And how dare that post say we should piss on the poor)
OMG IN DA WILD... HI ITS MILKCANDY FROM TUMBLR LMAO
@@kimbleetrash1478 OMG HIIIII HIIII
thank you for your sacrifice, I'm with those who post "literally no one wants tumblr live, what the fuck staff" but with this new perspective and research you've done, at least I feel a bit more informed. It should absolutely be its own thing with maybe a little link to be like 'hey we do this too, come check it out :)' instead of the aggressive pushing they've been doing. If they had done that from the start I wouldn't have been so quick to judge, but to force everyone to see it and "snooze for 7/30 days" bullshit makes me immediately hate it.
The damage is already done sadly.
8:28 the thing is that users have been very vocal about changes they *do* want, & those have been ignored in favour of shit no one asked for implemented in an incredibly hostile way. Hell at this point I'd pay them to just fix the fucking search function.
Photomatt (current Tumblr CEO), in the stream where he says "how much would you pay for that" about getting rid of live (which is shitty all on it's own) also alluded to making people pay for accessibility features (like not being shown flashing ads that can cause seizures).
It's like they don't understand that we use Tumblr *because* it's Tumblr - if I wanted "Live" I'd just be on tiktok, if I wanted the homepage to look like *that* I'd still be on Twitter, if I wanted people to see my face I'd be on Facebook or Instagram - most Tumblr users want Tumblr to just *be Tumblr*.
If they'd just fix *any* of the shit we've been asking for for years, or do *anything* we might actually want (like polls! polls was a good addition!!), or just generally bother to listen to feedback & respond accordingly, then they could just stick a 'donate' button somewhere like AO3 or Wikipedia do & we'd fund the site ourselves.
If they were less invasive & shitty about live, & the only thing the carousel/page showed me was if people *I actually follow* were streaming then I'd be pretty much neutral (or maybe even positive!) about it - but as it is it can get fucked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
"What is it that Tumblr, the Meet Group, and SexyJennifer87 don't want me to KNOW?!"
this is peak contextual comedy
The way I went from "huh maybe I did buy into tumblr mass hysteria" about tumblr live and then went to "man thats shadyyy" seven DMs and bam. shadow ban.
one time a twitch stream i was watching, they were playing a multiplayer game, and squad streaming it. one of the hosts was not twitch streaming, but said he was streaming somewhere. eventually we found him on tumblr and that honestly may have been one of the highest individually viewed streams on tumblr
that was trog from RTVS playing multiplayer elden ring right? highest framerate stream i've ever watched
@@monckat4681 yes it was lol
@@cursedvhstape2443 lmao
that was the first and only tumblr live stream i'd ever seen and i assumed the crazy saturation and fisheye lens effect were just part of the tumblr live experience
i wouldve never imagined tumblr live has a real community, how interesting!
The fact that the live rules are all discouraging sex work and drug dealing but no bans on CP or violence or animal abuse is baffling. Also youtube for example tests out their new products on smaller markets like canada first before you the US. Sounds like tumblr did the opposite, which seems much more risky
I mean there’s the ‘no streaming with minors’ which in theory covers cp. the other things though? Insane
I'm pretty sure you don't have to specify "don't break the law" for the law to still apply.
Those rules are probably already covered on tumblr as a whole. The live rules are just more specific.
@@shigekax I mean, sex work and drug dealing are also illegal
@@ObsessiveCompulsiveClown sex work, depends on the website.
Drugs, I'll give you that
Its insane that this video is only 3 months old and tumblr live is shutting down within two weeks. It feels like it's been way longer
something really strange is i literally only saw one popup for tumblr live once on my phone like a year ago and never again. ive never seen the buttons or the live categories or anything on my phone or my pc, pretty weird
Same lmao
Do you use the app or the website on your phone? I only use tumblr on browser and I haven't seen it either, so I wonder if that's why
Same here! I only ever used it on my computer though so maybe thats why?
Lucky you
@@anotherterribleday I use the app from the play store
the outfit switch at 38:02 really goes well with the "im new here" tactic. incognito mode activated
i have never entered a live, but if someone were doing speedpaints, making music, building something, or whatever usual tumblr activity culture id be interested mildly
But what you don't know is that his real name is Strange Aeons....
They should get the tumbeasts on live. I'd watch their gnawing and/or mutiny.
I loved hearing from the streamers, most of them there around the end seemed so chill and nice. Makes me feel like live could work out better if they had sections or categories like gaming, art, or chatting. In early days of Instagram live in highschool- I used to stream doing art and it was really fun even though it was like 2-3 people each time. I tried going on live after watching this but there was no way of telling what I was getting into and it turned me off of trying.
I’m in the USA. I opened a stream once when it first showed up it was some guy, and I was like Yo, when did tumblr get streaming? And he said something along the lines of it’s not tumblr, it’s a third party he’s not even on tumblr, he’s on something else. I haven’t opened another stream since, and they’re gone now. He seemed ok, but def not a tumblr person
When I found out that Tumblr Live is literally just some rebranded white label video service this made soooo much sense.
The fact that this part of the website that looks like a dating site is made by an external group that makes dating livestream services is the least surprising shocker
You know, this video actually made me want to try Tumblr live more than anything else Tumblr ever did. Like I can understand why people might like it now, it's just a casual way to talk to people and bee friends. Sounds like a good time potentially
You did it, Doctor Father. You defeated Tumblr Live
Goos to see the video back up! I will now know about the cursed existence of Tumblr live. This is something I didn’t know I wanted but I needed.
goos
goos.

I really appreciate the part of the video where you demonstrated how to (safely) touch grass.
I'm in a local-level punk band and one time we went on a tour up to New York, and one of the other bands playing that night was saying how they met through Tumblr back in the day and they wondered whatever happened to Tumblr and I jumped up and down raising my hand and they called on me, and I said "we lost Yahoo 1 billion dollars!" And everyone clapped (not really but it did get a lot of cheers and the band thought it was funny)
"The post was probably deleted for violating harassment policies because it tagged Tumblr's CEO"... In the writing business, this is a little something we call "foreshadowing".
i do like the idea of just watching peoples knitting streams through tumblr. like twitch can do that, but doing it through tumblr with people whose blogs you follow would be cool.
As a regular Twitch user, I think Live could be more liked if they centred it more around gaming.Tumblr has a huge gaming community and I often see people trying to advertise their Twitch streams in game tags I follow, it'd be cool if they could just stream on Tumblr instead where they likely have a larger follower-base. and idk streaming and gaming just go together in my head. It could be really fun, they could do like scary game events for Halloween and stuff like that, and you could have something similar to Just Chatting for people who just want to socialise.
Obviously Tumblr is and will always be primarily a micro-blogging/social media(lite) site, and does not have the resources or clout to compete with a site like Twitch, nor would I want it to, but this *could* be a really fun extra feature to what we already have. This video shows the market is clearly there, people enjoy it, they just need to utilise it better.
I don't know how staff fumbled the marketing for this feature SO bad. Generic hot women are an instant red flag for tumblr users lmao. we've dealt with the bots for years, and staff should know this as they deal with them too. Staff could solve half their problems by just getting to know their userbase better and learning how to appeal to them imo. It's a shame because a lot of the features they've introduced in the past couple of years have been really good, they're just suuper hit- and-miss. I understand they need to make money ofc but I don't think the userbase is generally anti-change, we just want GOOD change.
Anyway great video! This was super interesting
right?? it bothers me so much when people say "oh tumblr users just hate change! you can't please them no matter how good a job you do!" like hello were you not online when POLLS launched?! the paid badges and crabs haven't gone down too badly either (crab day controversy notwithstanding) and for a retro example, the return of the replies was one hell of an experience.
it's just that tumblr has a habit of... tumblr-ing it. like having private messages be spread amongst users like a virus. or riding so high off blaze's initial excitement that they forgot moderation is important for paid ad campaigns of any scale and maybe it's a bad idea to let someone blaze their ah, 'end-of-life' note.
@@PugandOwnsomeone did that??????
@@holysanguis yeah like within a day of launch. at least it was a unique horror, compared to the nudes and tradcath propaganda I also saw being documented.
@@holysanguissomeone also managed to blaze a racial slur, but at least that one was easier to miss (the bottom of an image with several normal, positive messages scattered about)
at this point i wouldnt be surprised if tumblr contacted sir strange asking her to help with pr stuff because my opinion on live has done a complete 180 from a single video
i WOULD be surprised tbh. even though it's a video that changes my perspective about the feature, I don't remember a single time tumblr staff had reached out to an user for platform change suggestions.
Haha image tumblr making good decisions..
“They didn’t seem to be regular tumblr users”
Father Strange, this was the moment. There is only one way to know if these people are “real” tumblr users…tell them you like their shoelaces.
I didn't know you've only been forced to deal with it for 2 weeks, tumblr live has been around long enough at this point I'm already able to tune it out entirely. I think tumblr has become the cool parent of the social media world, you can do some "bad" things but only on their site
Also what the hell is up this this sonic frontiers level currency system

holy shit the whole "no more social interaction for you" thing happened to me. I emailed support like once a day for 3-4 days and got restored with claims it was a "glitch". Sure, Jan.
(Context, I also sent 5-6 copy/paste DMs within about 20 minutes and then was locked out of a lot of features.)
actually hilarious that you say tumblr having long-form text posts fosters more general alertness while using it - but only after you'd mentioned how tumblr is forever and always also the Piss On The Poor website like half an hour earlier. spoken like a true fellow tumblrina
The funniest thing about this is that Tumblr is just trying to make money and that concept is so foreign to the userbase that it felt like an attack
Edit: I do acknowledge that said attempts to make money have been shady at best and that they're doing a Pretty Bad Job
most social media platforms only operate for the monetary gain of their companies and investors, often at the expense of the users' privacy or wellbeing. and realistically i still don't think this is any different, but it's an interesting and odd case.
edit: i was gonna say, i get the feeling many tumblr users are keenly aware of this which is why they are so resistant to it.
I can’t speak for everyone but personally I am resistant to tumblr trying to make money by following the steps I left other websites over lol I’d love them to make money. I’d love to pay more, just for a better site. 😂
It feels like an attack because they actively keep adding and changing features that no one asked for and everyone hates, not because they’re trying to make money
@@annaclaireyarbrough873 Yeah, when they announced, like, what, a month ago? that they are going to try the "just give us money please, we're begging" approach of monetization, my first thought was: why didn't you try this first, then it might have even worked! Now, after all the other BS it certainly won't
Nah, people do really wanna give them money- just look at the very important checkmarks and the crabs, people love them, and they’re everywhere.
The problem is everything else being so shitty and in-your-face-cashgrabby that they refuse to pay lest it will be read by dear photomatt as support for his tomfoolery, on top of all the crap staff‘s doing.
Hello, father strange, as I am attempting to steal your identity, I must inquire into where you purchased your glasses. I understand that you are unlikely to see this, but I shall still make my inquiry.
Have you tried sending an ask to Father's Tumblr
Titty women should be a choice not forced unless your into CNC.
It's extremely ironic I can't search for booty, shorts, or pegging but Tumblr live will advertise titty women & men. I fully support NSFW content returning to Tumblr but that isn't this.
This really is like the when twitch dropped the gaming content rule.
I do legitimately hope Tumblr finds a functional business model but I highly doubt this will be it.
Now *I am not a tumblr user* (though I participated in the ArchiveTeam effort to archive 100s of Ks NSFW blogs in the purge) and *did not even finish the video yet* BUT the way they've bungled this seems incredibly obvious to me!
First off they shouldn't try to trick users, tumblr users are definitely savvy enough to recognize bulls--t and manipulation instantly and not appreciate it. None of that "snooze" stuff or forcing live(s) on top of the normal content.
Second... they should've *initially* only let in established and active accounts, like 1+ year old and having posted within the last X months. This way they would have the *actual tumblr community* testing out the waters and figuring out what they want to make of livestreaming on the platform, and not get flooded by exiles or money-grubbing half-bots from other platforms spawning in, which the real tumblr userbase is obviously going to hate and subsequently turn off, as they have.
And also by last X months I mean X months before they launched the live, no latecomers. Just a controlled set of existing real users who were there for tumblr, not money, and break the rules => you're outta the testing pool. It would've stabilized to *something* unique relatively quickly.
What a massive miss from them
EDIT Ooooh yeah that explains it, they didn't build it. Sorta relieved that tumblr _personally_ did not create something this antithetical to their community... Well, I really hope that they secured the bag from TMG and not the other way around for this travesty
Who's here after learning that it's shutting down on the 24th?
this is so fun to watch now that theyre geting rid of tumblr live lmao
Weirdly enough, this makes me kind of mourn Live now that it's dead. Just a little bit. I hope the people who had found genuine fulfillment on Tumblr Live have been able to maintain that to a certain end.
okay the separation between the culture of the live part of tumblr and the main site is fascinating
i’ve been thinking for years that i wanna start streaming like “bedtime stories” where i just read public domain books and stories on stream. maybe i should try tumblr now lmao
