Actualy if you unscrew the CD module you will be able to disassembly the whole unit pretty easy, sometimes there are screws under door. The LED is not dual color (it would had 3 leads), but it can be (unlikely) bi-colur (reverse polarity is used for other color). The construction is relatively good. The switch is momentary (the name is TACTILE Switch) it costs barely 5 cents. The repair went flawlessly. Perfect job Vince.

I know this is an 4 year old post but for info NOT all camera detect Infra Red. Mis’s digital cameras and some expensive phones have infra red filters ! So they don’t show. The cheap LCR component tester now has an infra detector. Lovely to see how you have evolved from 4 years ago to now.

Instead of going through all of this testing and digging through trying to get this device to work, I’m flying to China, and I’m going to find a bride that worked in the factory that made those things bring her back so she can fix mine ! Seriously though I quit painting my house today and I’m having a beer now. I’m really enjoying your video. I did pick up one that looks just like yours this morning, August 23 2023, at an estate sale for ten bucks American. Wish me luck!

If the remote had worked the whole thing could be switched on with that.
By the way those little switches can be bought on ebay for next to nothing and are a common failure point.

Nice fix :) Had to look up what's PAT inspection, never heard of that before (I'm Finnish). Circuit board looks indeed older technology, lots of electrolytic capacitors, soldered ribbon cables, etc., looks pretty similar even to my 1980's Salora Manager (Vtech Laser 2001) home computer cicruit board.
I should try to fix my 1992 Sharp portable CD-cassette radio player as the CD-player is skipping but apparently it needs some sort of special crosshead screwdriver, very long but also very thin one, to take it apart.

Have to give a lot of credit to Paul. His first diagnosis was "switch" and he suggested bridging it to test :-) By the way, Hitachi was in no way a "cheap" device. It may be of old school design now but Hitachi made very good and reliable devices back in the day (judging by date code on IC, this one was made circa 2003).

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Still do in some areas. I have a Hitachi angle grinder I bought a couple of years back, superb quality. Most of the Hitachi electronics is rebadged cheap stuff now but back in the day as you say they were one of the better second-tier Japanese makes, and let's face it none of the old Japanese companies made junk, even Sanyo at the low end made robust, reliable stuff.

Sometimes that yellow haze on top of solder points or joints are a conformal coating used to protect those points from an accidental bridge such as water. Think of it as a very thin layer of protective glue.

Panasonic boombox from the 90s palgged with switch issues. The only way test to check the control board is ok, is using the remote control. Panasonic systems used just a resistor array and a three wire reading for the whole front panel. Instead of reading ON / OFF it detected different small changes in the voltage line as different buttons have a different associated resistor (different value). Guess what ???? as soon as the switches started to wear a bit an develop some ohms, system went crazy, as the voltage generated by one buttont shifted into other button value. Giving Play, turned radio. Pressing stop would rewind and so on. Pretty common failure mode. You need to replace all switches or at least the most used ones. As per the transforme output, dont worry. It could be two thing. The voltage goes down while loaded (boobmx on) or, boombx accepts more voltage than the one provided by batteries to put more ouput power on AC. This sounds rare, but many 80s boomboxes did it that way. They have TWO ouput power figures. Running on batteries was the lower one and running on AC the bigger one. but you need to regulate certain parts like the logic control and motor. The amplifier part does not need regulation.

The button is a normal momentary pushbutton (yes that is what they are called, so you were correct Vince), there is circuitry somewhere else that does the toggling on/off when the button is pressed. I know that because when you bridged the pads (so the button was not involved), it still acted like a toggle. Also, every toggle pushbutton I've seen has visibly pressed and depressed when toggled, it seems to be the physical position of the button that decides whether to make the connection or not. These buttons are very common and are cheaply available online. You see them used a lot in hobby Arduino projects, breadboard projects, etc.

Nice little fix this one! I strongly suggest investing in one of iFixit's kits for future projects. I have their Mako kit that has 64 bits, all the ones you could ever need including all security bits for games consoles and mobile phones like Nintendo/Xbox/Apple etc and I have never needed another screwdriver since. You also get a flexible extension bit included like you had at the end of the video for getting into tight spots. If you're feeling a little more fancy then go for their Pro Tech kit that also has every kind of tool you need to open up gadgets like spudgers, tweezers and suction cups. The case they come in also doubles as a parts tray. The kits are a little pricey but they are the best in the business and they back the entire kit with a lifetime warranty so if you manage to brake a bit or a spudger they will send you another one.
Also, please make a tape and a CD of songs from the TH-cam audio library for testing, as much as we all love Jimmy Nail, Christmas songs and that episode of The Archers you need to save yourself from a copyright strike!

On a portable CD player first try changing out the batteries to fresh new batteries. I had a CD player/radio, the radio worked but the CD player did not recognize a CD in it. I thought it was busted until I found the electric cord and plugged it in, then the CD player worked. So I put in new batteries and the CD player worked. The old batteries must have had enough juice for the radio but not enough power left to play CDs. Simple fix to try.

hay vince. you can fix those micro switches easy. if you take the metal off that surrounds the button . you can take the button out underneath is a little metal disc shaped like a metal bowl. use some emery cloth on the concave part of the metal disc then reassemble it should work then. this also works on gba sp shoulder buttons.

Okurka that is not the only way I dried it. I opened up the entire board and made sure there wasn’t a drip, and put it back EXACTLY as it was before (I took many photos). Here is what I did:
1: opened up the board and let it air dry ( I live in Fresno and it was 105 degrees ferianhite) for an hour-3
2: put it in a bag of rice for 4 days
      3. Made sure there were no parts that had water in them and no rice.

Common failure for these vince ..They are called 'tactile buttons/switches' and very cheap to buy in lots of 10 50 or 100 etc from China ...critical measurements when ordering are... shape... square or rectangular ..the dimensions of the button base and the height of the button above the switch base..they come in many types...rgds
Evan..there are even micro sized versions for car key fobs
The latching effect is usually controlled by the micro ...simply by toggling a voltage via the button on a dedicated I/O pin on the micro device.

Those units use a double insulated transformer that has a tiny fuse inside so maybe a new transformer of the same type should solve the problem,That large 100 leg flat-pack chip is most likely a Toshiba version of the Texas Instruments Blackfin DSP chip, What about using EVOSTICK to close up the crack, then let it dry then roughen it up with sand paper and see if that solves the problem.

Just in case you are not aware most Japanese products will use Japnese Industrial Standard (JIS) screws, not Philips.(They look very similar.)
The main difference is the depth of the cavity in the head, JIS is quite shallow compared to Philips hence using a Philips driver in a JIS head results in 'camming out'. A JIS driver should be OK-ish in a Philips head at a push.
Something to look out for is a single small indentation, (a dot), on the screw head. This will indicate it is a JIS head but not all screw manufactureres use it so a screw without one may still be JIS. Unfortunately the video is out of focus at the point where you show us the screw head so I couldn't tell if this is the case here.
JIS screwdrivers can be found on your favourite auction website although do tend to be slightly more expensive than your average 'Philips' or 'Pozzy'. You can also get JIS 'bits' and 'precision' driver sets too...whatever a 'precision' driver is...LOL.
As most of your repairs seem to be Japanese products it may be worthwhile investing in one or two....as you know, the right tool for the job can save hours of frustration.
Good luck, and thanks for the videos.
Just noticed this has already been mentioned...sorry.

Good repair Vince, but why were you doing this one on the floor? Often it's just a simple thing like that switch which stops something working. If you had tried the remote first it would have worked straight away!
I've got a Sony M35 Minidisc CD Boombox system that has recently gone faulty, but it just says 'error' on the display & won't turn on or anything, so I think it may be a more complex software fault.

Hi Vince, nice fix, why don't you spend an hour taking bits off boards you've been unable to mend and keep a compartment box with spares in, I found a sky+HD box in our back street at weekend, no use really without a subscription but it has a 500gb seagate hard drive, a 60mm fan and an abundance of micro switches all for free

Vince, i know this is a minor thing but it's the only thing that stops me really enjoying your otherwise great vids. Please, please can you turn down the audio when you're testing continuity, you have possibly the loudest and highest pitched multimeter i've ever heard and considering your method of testing continuity isn't just "put the probes on, it beeps, it works" it's "put probes on, it beeps, take probes off and put back on, it beeps, repeat x 10" it honestly get's sort of painful having such a high pitched loud noise going off for so long. As i mentioned i know it's a really minor thing and i do really like your vids otherwise, maybe my hearing is more sensitive than others but it really does bug me.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi, I don't have an option to turn it down on the multi meter and it would take a lot of editing on these long videos. I will see if the multimeter has holes to let the sound out as I may be able to tape over them to reduce it a bit :-)

Modern cameras (/lenses) got UV filters built in, so you won't be able to see the signal of the remote in the footage ;)
