    Not sure I agree with this test. Computer productivity is anything BUT sequential reading/writing (onto the HDD). This video claims you gain double the performance, but in reality RAID is one huge bottleneck. Only your Adobe benchmarks seems to explain anything, really. The improvements you gain are absolute minimal and really not worth the effort like those extra steps during windows setup. Just stick to one drive, please.

    Curious… x570 with 3 drive slots. I wanna run top 2 in 0 with 990 pros and an old 970 evo plus in third. I know bottom 2 drives are board/chipset x4. I wonder if I could somehow get full speed on top two also while running gen 3 drive in bottom slot. I’m guessing no. I really wish there was option to cancel all sata ports or half of them to get a dedicated at least x2 pcie 4 in bottom slot so pcie 3 (970evo plus) could run at full speed…(pcie 3 x4 = pcie4x2 right? Any ideas? And what drives for what tasks optimally? Is it still important to keep OS and storage/games etc on dif drives? Makes sense to me to do OS and programs on bottom drive while keeping raid 0 setup for games and super fast storage etc. especially with games starting to optimize for faster drive speeds, aka direct storage..

    I disagree with the notion that Raid 0 is less reliable. Though sector failures are more likely to break the system, this is negated by the fact that the drives are witting to half as much and further negated by the fact that doubling the size of a drive also doubles the reliability.

    • @damonm3
      @damonm3 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly the point I made on a recent Reddit post. Obviously adding each drive increase hardware failures but halves use. Should at least counter it. And assuming 99% of drives make it to stated write specs dividing demand to two drives doubles reliability. So 2x2tb is same as 4tb. You either need to backup your drive or you don’t. Doesn’t change with raid 0. So it’s a dumb argument. Unless you plan on using the allocated drive slot for a backup drive. If you backup via cloud or external it’s a moot point.

  • @b1lleman
    @b1lleman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2 SSD's on the chipset slots would be a viable RAID setup if they are PCIE 3.0, while still taking advantage of the cpu-chipset PCIE 4.0 lanes. However, given the sequential speed of these nvme's I don't really see a real benefit. I did raid together two classic HDD's together on my X570 giving me ~300MB/s speed copy from SSD to HDD, but gave it up since it slowed down my BIOS POST by about 10 seconds.

    Its a good start, but not THE definitive test - which is 2x pcie 4 nvme, both using 4x true PCIE 4 lanes vs ~laggy chipset lanes.
    he is matching an unlike pair in raid 0, so the lowest speed of the pair prevails.
    Its very doable on the right mobos.
    it comes down to if u suffer downsides from an 8 lane gpu - which is probably not - especially if u have a pcie 4 gpu.
    this frees an 8 lane slot on some mobos, and this can be used for an adapter w/ 2 nvme ports.
    even a triple array of ~matched drives is doable including the onboard x570 primary nvme.
    a development just to hand, is that Phison seem to have done it again with the just announced E18 nvme controller - their former max reads were ~5.4GB/s, they will soon be ~7GB/s.
    a triple array as above, could yield 20GB/s.

    4KQ1T1 read speed is pretty bad. Not completely terrible but its the kind of metric you actually feel on an OS drive. The sequential on the other hand, pretty good setup for storing large files like ISOs.
    VROC and Optane can get over 200MB/s 4KQ1T1 read even in 4 way RAID so that would make for a much better OS drive setup.

    • @vegajf51
      @vegajf51 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can raid Optane on amd boards also, intel needs to launch a Gen 4 optane drive

    • @nosirrahx
      @nosirrahx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vegajf51 You can but you lose VROC. Its not a huge difference but you get better performance on an Intel board and VROC also gets faster with CPU clock speed so a 5.0 ghz Intel CPU will have significantly better VROC performance than AMD RAID.
      Consumer Optane might be dead. Intel canceled both the upcoming 815P drive and M15 drives. AMD's new CPUs have put so much pressure on Intel that I think Intel is pulling resources to concentrate on next gen CPUs.

What got me super fast load times ,beyond my nvme 3.0 4x drives,was creating a Fusedrive of 64Gb of DDR4 3200 4x16gb plus a 2Tb SX 8200pro nvme PCI 3.0 4x. Went from 12 to 30 second game loads on my nvme's, to 1 or 2 second load times! Imagine running Deus Ex Mankind Devided level loads,in a second.Blows my PCIe 4.0 Asus TUF X570 mobo away.

I am planning to build a whole new PC with 1TB NVMe drives and 6TB mechanical storage around xmas or when ever big Navi comes out, hopefully around then. At this stage everything in my PC is junk except for the water cooling which is passive and has been flawless since 04. GPU and CPU are from 2014/15 though so its a mishmash of retro and modernish hardware.

    So in this video he had a GPU on the first PCIe slot, one NVMe drive on the CPU, another on the chipset? That means the PCIe config became 8x, 4x, 4x? Could he have done it with a GPU on the first PCIe slot and an M.2 to PCIe adapter on the second slot with this last slot bifurcated to 8x,8x over the BIOS?

    I can see running raid 0 or 1 on the chipset with a Gigabyte Master or such that has 3 m.2. slots. Put a gen 4 ssd on the cpu's m.2 for main drive and 2 gen 3 on the chipset m.2. this would give you another drive letter instead of 2 and you use up those older ssds you may have sitting around and give them the same performance of the gen 4. Two good gen 3 wouldn't saturate the chipset 4x bandwidth.

    I set up a raid 0 on 2 256GB drives. Mostly so I can have 500GB of main storage. I bought a 256 Samsung 960 Evo when I built my PC then just recently I bought a 256 WD PCIe 3.0 drive for $30. So my speed didn't change much, if anything it is slightly better but I also have double the storage. I am also running it on a X370 ASRock Taichi.

    LOW COST TEST - Would you consider RAID 0 a NVMe 0 to CPU and NVMe 1 on PCI 16 Card (which should talk directly to CPU). The PCI 16 cards are available for $10 us or less. Then you would have full speed RAID... I know it would cut the Video card throughput in half YET I believe (love to see :-)) it won't effect real world video performance. AND 25% to 30% performance gain on SSD's

    Roman, that rumor about high power for PCIe4 SSD's probably comes from that chipsetfan and the exotic cooling on those Gigabyte SSD's. Given the low differences which you have shown it became even more clear how ridiculous it is that the motherboard-companies don't use better passive cooling to avoid having that horrible chipsetfan. A simple thin copper/aluminium pipe ending on some fins where the case-fan blows wind over should suffice, right? Quesiton. Could you figure out why games don't load faster on faster SSD's? Are the RAM and the memory on the graphics card the problem?

    Roman, one thing I'd like to point out, statistic outlying failures don't matter in SSD NAND as much as they do with HDDs. HDDs are going to fail, it is expected for them to fail within 3-5 years if used in any kind of RAID configuration due to the motor driver boards in them being scaled so much towards cost reduction, that the components are junk now.

    So, please, for RAID0 in an Aorus Master x570 you want to use the two PCIE 4.0 slots connected to the chipset and leave the one closer and connected to the CPU unraided. That is the best configuration, right? Also: can you have two RAID0 arrays, one composed of two nvme M2 SSDs and another composed of two 7200RPM HDDs? Does the chipset supports it, no problem for sure? Thank you so much for the help, appreciated
