Kratos can't die for one reason. he killed Thanatos. when he killed Thanatos, the women who cursed him told him "he was Death". Kratos is not just the god of war, he is the god of war & death
He is not just the "god of death" he is death in itself, thanatos was a primordial not a god, he was death incarnate so when kratos killed thanatos he became death incarnate, that's why he brings death every where he goes, cus he is death in itself, it's just that he doesn't know it yet, or at least hasn't accepted it.
And death can't die, the reason thanatos died is because somehow kratos knowingly or unknowingly gained more power than a primordial after the death of his brother.
I also think that even if kratos acknowledges the fact that he is death itself he wouldn't know how to control this death aspect of his, unlike thanatos he is a man made God and now a primordial(sort of). He is an entity that is beyond the "normal" lower realms. And I'm pretty sure that he is some how connected to the higher plain in more than one way and I'm pretty sure he is more than just a pawn in that game of demiurge. The fallen god comics make this a lot more complex and sort of explains this.
i don’t think it’s the curse, i think it’s that kratos is a unique god, unlike his others, he can return after death and is a undying immortal being, who can never have true death
Kratos was able to climb out of hades not because he’s a god but because he is strong and there’s nothing saying the other gods couldn’t too. The barbarian king climbed out of hades as well in god of war 2 so it can be done by multiple people.
@@michaelprice3040 i’m not talking about him climbing out of hades, i’m talking about him killing himself and being resurrected afterwards, and there’s no true evidence that it’s the curse of his ashes or a curse for him to not be able to commit suicide, because the same statement is a implication that the gods cannot allow him to commit suicide, the gods were dead, the gods kept him alive for him to become the god of war in the first place, with the gods dead, that wouldn’t make sense, kratos states that his immortality kept him alive in the comic
Kratos is also the God Of Death and the “original” god of death was Thanatos but how could of Thanatos have died if he was Death itself. That means theres no other explanation but that Kratos is the God of Death also and that means without Kratos death cannot exist so thats why I believe he cant die.
@@modernvmmcpe6238 This logic doesn’t work, If Kratos can not die because he is death that would also mean Thanatos can not die if he is death before Kratos.
From what I remember hearing, it isn't your average curse and it isn't as simple as he can't let himself die. Even erasure may not work due to how the curse works. Last I heard, Kratos isn't just cursed to never die. He is fated to. Meaning even if he does die, somehow, he will be brought back, whether by a third party or by himself. Erasure would be counteracted by a third party, so on and so forth.
Exactly, kratos IS dead, his original body is still in the temple impaled by the God of war. People seem to forget that part of his lore. He came back in a new body and as an immortal. Then he was cursed and given God hood, he has layers of immortality, not just one.
He isn't full immortal. He can't die of age, but he can be killed in battle. The problem is he keeps coming back from hell. He can't stay dead basically. So he is half immortal. Not fully.
All beings in nature cannot be truly immortal, all gods have to have one or more permanent ways to kill them. In Kratos case he has true immortality, but in the sense that he still has to be able to killed/die, so nature's balance can be maintained, then he comes backs. That's nature's loophole.
this isnt true he IS fully imortal but not invincible. Think of baldur cant die cuz he’s invincible/invulnerable kratos isnt invulnerable or invincible but is immortal mraning he could die but not from age or natural cause(also the greek gods are the same immortal but not invincible the only reason they age is cuz they dont have the golden ichor running thru their veins its blood cuz they have worshippers so they dont need the ichor so they age but wont die from it.
Every time kratos dies he gets third party help to progress story. Every single time. I understand let kids be kids, but let's be honest, this is a kids phase like Deadpool was. They'll learn
I think at the time of God of War 4, Chaos, who Kratos is aware of by name and has witnessed their power firsthand. Is keeping Kratos going. He brings a out change where ever he goes, which creates chaos. So who better would ensure his continued immortality then Chaos itself. A foreign god throwing the 9 realms into mayhem and kickstarting Ragnarok, now that's chaos on itself.
Chaos is also the most prominent of all the primordials, having dominance over all others as none can contain Chaos, but certain bands of primordials can establish order within chaos by banding together, creating worlds.
I think what makes him immortal is that he is the god of hope even tho he fought died killed he had hope of a better day pushing him it was his destiny to open Pandora’s box and he was imbued even more so. It’s shown at the end of gow that he is now a god of hope and as long as mankind breaths and has hope he will never die.
Not really cause in the comics that takes place after God of war, 3 Kratos gets attacked by Greeks that blame him for the destruction of the world. He was not killed by zeus just Pushed into the river of sticks He was technically cursed twice once by the priest. For the ashes to be grafted to a skin. And second by the gods after he slayed them.
Well excellent video, you have a good point. But I think Athena's sentence in GoW3 right after Kratos fell into hell explains why he can't die. She said, "Death cannot hold those with purpose" . During the Greece era, the purposes of Kratos were: to forgive his family's murder and make god pay for their lies. Then in Nordic area, Kratos is still immortal even if the purpose is done because now his goal is to protect Atreus
lol if its that easy then alot of people would become immortal. some other gods died that still has purpose so what about them? so your theory is unlikely
Actually you missed one more thing. He is the god of Hope. There will always be hope in mankind which is why its the most powerful power a god could have. He initially refused his godhood, this was the reason why he was weakened but still a god, still immortal. and he's also unconditionally immortal FROM this instance. People, regardless of their race, their origin, their attitude towards life will have hope. He can best other gods because they "hope" for something better. Indirectly they power Kratos further. And his ashes are fading away because of 2 things, he isn't being remembered as the ghost of sparta because of his white skin and the terrible deeds that entails he's being remembered for his actions AFTER. He defeated gods, titans, and monsters to a point that the people who originally hated him became to respect him. His family directly has forgiven him for his deeds and even in god of war chains of olympus his daughter still wanted to be at his side.
Kratos is now powerful enough to stand against Thor but what if he gains the godly powers from the blade of Olympus again before going to the Egyptian pantheon
its explained many times that he is indeed cursed to roam forever, however the only way to kill him is lifting the curse and be strong enough to kill him. Even if curse is lifted and not killed he will still live forever cause hes worshiped
So, in terms Ragnarok repeating back to creation, that is a type of reincarnation itself. The same Kratos but perhaps, if he kept his memories of the moments just before he died previously, he learns how to properly counter it all. In short; Ground-Hog Day (the movie) but mythologically speaking.
if Kratos was cursed it could have happened in God of War: Ghost of Sparta after killing Thanatos and his daughter Erinys Kratos ask a question "By the gods. What have I become?" the gravedigger is Zeus have cursed Kratos many times over grave digger: Death. The destroyer... of worlds
It could either be Zeus who cursed him to walk the earth forever bc kratos betrayed him or it could be the village oracle who cursed him for spilling his owns family’s blood which turned his skin pale to make him remember what he did
I'm pretty sure Kratos' curse came from Athena. The seer/oracle at the village where he murdered his family, cursed him to wear the ashes on his skin to remind him and others of what he did. However, it was Athena who cursed Kratos to not be allowed to kill himself or give up his life, forcing him to live with the pain of killing his family. I think it was at the end of the first God of War (correct me if I'm wrong), Kratos attempted suicide by jumping off a cliff, but Athena raised him back up to the cliff and told him he couldn't be killed by his own hand. So long story short, Kratos cannot kill himself or allow himself to be killed but CAN still be killed if he is bested in battle, as shown by Thor killing him in God of War Ragnarok. He wasn't allowing Thor to kill him because Kratos thought he needed to protect Atreus, which is why Thor could kill him before resurrecting him. Let me know what you think, if you agree or if I've missed something.
I know im two months late but yes. Finally someone who gets the point of his curse. Athena, village oracle and Persephone cursed him. And now it all goes to circles. He can be killed but has point for living (Atreus) . Long story short, his curse brings him back to life every time being will for living because of atreus or something else. There is always something that brings him back. Example: if he wasn't cursed ,thor wouldn't bring him back to life....its his unbreakable destiny that every time something happens that brings him back, and so he is cursed to walk the earth forever wearing ashes of family and blades that he can't get rid of
@@ghostofwar5430 Did Thor actually kill Kratos or was he knocked unconscious? We can hear Thor talking through the whole thing, which wouldn't be possible if Kratos were properly dead.
@@Nostradevus1You can't listen somebody talk even if you're unconcious as well lmao. I think it's just the director's vision of the scene that it was setup like that :)
It’s a curse not a gift most of this is correct because kratos tried to kill himself after zues but the curse prevented him. He the wondered Egypt trying all forms to kill himself. He eventually landed up in Norse mythology fell in love with feg and forgave himself of his past sins of killing his daughter and wife with the birth of Atreus kratos now had a reason to live forgiving himself therefor lifting the curse. This is how Thor was able to kill him.
Kratos story sound very alike with cains cursed that god(from the Bible) put on him. Cain was cursed with wandering the earth restlessly(immortal) and his skin color was changed to white.
He has the power of hope. And it resurrects him when he dies. It’s that simple. He stabbed himself and drained all his power in the blade of Olympus but he has. A unquantifiable amount left. But clearly not enough that he can use. But probably enough that it can do whatever the plot needs. The end
Kratos cannot die not because of his other powers, but of his power of hope As per the mythology there is always a way to ressurect so if there is a way Kratos has all the hope he needed to find it
The curse of his bloodline. To die at the hands of his own offspring. It happened to the Titan who startes it, it happened to Zeus, it will happen to Kratos. Until then nothing can stop him. He is an unstoppable force. His family's fate of inheretance through bloodshed is an unstoppable one...but not a fate that can be anticipated. Zeus thought he knew and still got blindsided.
I think it was the curse not to mention that Kratos is already dead that standing is just anger and suffering, the only way he dies is if he feels happy or leftover power from the end of God of War 3 that kept him alive, or simply the Santa Monica suits that didn't want to kill their sacred cow .
Kratos I can tell from his blades of chaos as he took on the aspect of other gods through fighting. Kratos holds in him hope and the primordial flame in his blades, he was cursed to live forever, but I think that the two aspects he holds, one related to the beginning of creation and the other constantly being the answer to “what can we do if we lose it all” connects to in essence rebirth, he is destined to never stay dead to return again and again as someone stronger than they were before in some way
It began when his brother Deimos was taken. Kratos did the red marks on his body that reminded of his brothers birth mark. It was there the story of God of War was made. His brother was taken away, Kratos became the ghost of Sparta. With his anger and revenge on whom that took his brother he did go berserk. On his way he met almost all gods of Greece mythos, and it was on that way he gained immortality. Yeah, ofc they went into norse mythos also. After that guess egyptian mythos and even sumerian mythos are at line. I dunno. But hey, that doesn't goes according to the timeline. So the game where he fights egyptian god's, count me out. It would be more interesting if Kratos was borned in egyptian mythos and worked his way up. But Kratos sounds more greece in it's name. Well, I am only going through what they can do with God of War in a long term. Would the storyline hold or will it fail? As for now, he killed greece gods and the gods of the aeisir. But what comes after that? Time machine to egyptian gods perhaps?
As long as hope lives on, he won't weaken. Kratos belives that in being better, he believes he can be a good God, one that people look up to not for his mistakes but his wisdom, his courage, and his heart the fact he can overcome great challenges and great hardship in himself. As long as Kratos believes in himself and forgives himself more and more for his mistakes, his followers will believe in him. Kratos is becoming a god of hope and not of war he actively strives for peace
He died in each of the main games 1 - 2 and 3 in one by a tree or wooden pillar that Ares threw at him when he was pushing Pandora’s Box. Two Zeus killed him with the Blade of Olympus and three when Gaia refused to rescue him when Zeus threw the lightning bolt and detached her arm
Kratos' immortality is confirmed to come from the same curse as the ashes. The ashes fading does not mean the curse is yet broken. The "nectar" is called ambrosia, and the gods' golden blood is known as ichor.
@abdbay One of the old devs was asked about it a long time ago during an impromptu Q&A. At the time, the plan was for the ashes and their curse to serve as a kind of Mark of Cain, if you will. Making Kratos both unkillable and a pariah. This of course also included being unable to take his own life. If you also want a source for ambrosia/ichor, that would simply be Greek mythology itself.
Some folks from santa monica hav actually already explained why Kratos ages. Essentially, he's still not in his physical prime yet and thus he will age until he reaches it and then stop ageing. This is why Zeus was was so young in the Titan War but once he grew his complete beard and long hair, he never aged even a bit. I assume the same will happen to Kratos and he will get more swole as time goes on and eventually get a completely white beard which will officially put him in his physical prime, after which he will not age (It wld be very fucking cool to see a kratos with a completely white beard and a physique similar to the doom slayer's). I got this info from an old reddit post on the god of war subreddit, the OP of the post had dms with one of the devs of god of war who answered their questions. Idt the devs mentioned that the greek gods needed nectar or ambrosia or some magical food to stay immortal, I think its more along the lines of just magic and divine genes or something that makes gods who they are, just cuz of their species and lineage they have these powers. I think its kinda like how mutants in marvel have their powers through genes and stuff and they are just born with them, no reliance on some sort of food. I'll edit this comment later and link the reddit post if i find it again so you guys can see my sources.
Its just like when Thor killed Kratos in their first fight he was fated to come back to life regardless. Kratos has one of the more brutally types of Immortality yes he can be killed but he will never truly die.
That is in part to the mythos of his immortality. In greek his immortality sends his renewed body to underworld. The greek mythos actually performs his resurrections for him by killing him.
Keep in mind how can thor bring anybody back with a head concussion or broken skull? Thor simply knocked him out and use his electricity to bring him back awake.
I like this theory but I also think its flawed, because Kratos was already a God because he was the son of Zeus, and he did have worshippers in a way via his Spartan army. His God hood didn't kick in yet because he didn't believe he was a god, but he still would've had conditional immortality similar to Hera. Then when he killed Ares the Gods essentially gave him a double dose of godhood, potentially making him stronger than him. but I believe the real reason he's unconstitutionally immortal is because he has to be, "death is a natural part of life" is what Faye tools him well what did Kratos do in the Greek era before most if his deaths happened? He killed Thanatos a god of death a "natural part of life" so what my idea is, is that Kratos's immortality isn't really a curse but rather the embodiment of life and death, that attached itself to him after he killed Thanatos, so because he is what he is nature and the higher plane can't have him die permanently so they always make sure he comes back to keep the cycle going.
He's an immortal demi god because he is a son of Zues so age doesn't affect him. Because he's part mortal if he's killed in combat his soul goes to a mortals afterlife where he kills some more to get out because there's always a way out
I see many talking about possible source to Kratos' curse and it comes from Persephone when he killed her and forced atlus to hold up the world (from "Chains of Olympus") she curses him to forever walk the earth so the he could never reunite with his daughter even if he cleansed his soul again.
i think the only way to kill kratos is to have his own son do it. in the mural, i don't think it was really thor that killed him permanently, it was atreus accidentally by removing his soul. kratos is too angry to die by any other means and there is the cycle of destiny.
These are my guesses before watching the video. 1. Help Kratos save his brother from dying. 2. Help Kratos before that time he yelled out for Hades. 3. Stop/avert kratos from opening pandora's box. 4. Stop/avert kratos before he used time travel powers around the time he visits the sisters of fate.
Or that the curse ISN'T UNCONDITIIONAL. Because Kratos is getting noticably older as more and more ashes fall off. At some point, it'll all fall off, and his unconditional immortality will be gone. His curse will be gone. And in its place, he shall have his people as the All-father of Asgard. And he'll have his immortality continued as a benevolent God.
I think stig confirmed in a facebook post that Kratos died by the hands of fear Zeus (if that facebook convo is real, hopefully it is) anyway, did they really confirm he didn't die at the starting of gow3? can you link it?
The theory i read was the reason kratos is immortal is that he's cursed to walk to earth forever because of all the bad he did over the years, all the innocent people he killed including his wife and child, i think that's why he's character is more calm in the newer games, he's trying to atone for everything he did thinking if he does enough good, maybe he'll finally be able to die but none of us want that do we, we want to see kratos cracking skulls in egypt 🤣🤣
I think I’d be interesting if Kratos went on to help rebuild after Ragnarok and becomes the basis for Jesus in the Abrahamic religions. Homie comes back to life after all
The only way for Kratos to die is when he is ready to truly die. It is unlikely anything as the power to kill Kratos especially when he is unwilling to die however, when he feels ready to die, it is likely more or less that that will be the only moment for his death. When he lays down his weapon voluntarily and willingly excepts death not out of sorrow or rage, but out of the sense that he feels that it is time. Of course, the blades of exile would have to be destroyed as well to completely break Kratos’s alternate source of immortality that could anchor his soul to the model plane in theory, since they are a form of curse that used to find Kratos to the service of Aries.
The whole immortality due to worship thing is complete BS. The game basically says that Kratos has no worshippers as Odin states it himself when talking to Kratos. In fact, the big reveal at the end of Ragnarok where he sees the Mural of people worshipping him is a big turning moment for him as he's never had that before. So yeah, this is just a bunch of hypothetical hogwash. Bad, incorrect hypothetical hogwash at that.
I see where you are coming from, but it is very possible that when Kratos left Greece, that Greek people started to worship him. Odin mocks Kratos by asking him if he has ever been worshipped, but he might not know for sure. For all we know, the Greeks might be worshipping Kratos after he freed them from the Greek gods who abandoned them. We hear them in God of War 3 scream that exact phrase a few times, “the gods have abandoned us!” From the perspectives of the Greeks, they might believe that the Greek gods abandoned them by flooding the land, spreading disease, releasing the souls of the underworld, etc. and Kratos the once man, but now turned god, released the power of hope to the mortal to save them from the harsh rule of the gods, and so that they may survive and thrive without their help.
if you think about it, after ragnarok kratos becomes all the more powerful. getting prayers from the greek followers as the god of war, and the norse people as a god of peace.
Kratos was bored human unlike his brother but became a god so he can’t die cause he change his fate then he tried to kill himself with the blade of Olympus. The. While the god of war he had followers and then lost his god hood then got that back. Since he defeated all the gods he was bought to the upper plan of godly hood and the rage he had from the blades he wasn’t allowed to die just like it was said in the the las game he hold the primal fire in his blades. He is a monster that does except who he is cause he killed his family. So those who can never forgive themselves can never die neither can he his so he wonders the plans of existence as the undeniable truth that death comes for them all no matter how he wants the to be.
There are actually two curses keeping Kratos immortal. There is of course, the one the oracle placed on him with his ashes, but there is also the one on Zeus' bloodline where they *will* be killed by their sons (curse/prophecy). So Cronos was "killed" and sent to Tartarus by Zeus, Zeus was killed by Kratos, and in God of War [Norse] Kratos finds that one prophecy that Atreus will kill someday kill Kratos. So until the day comes that the ashes all fall away (which is happening according to Cory Barlog), and Atreus in there with him - Kratos is unconditionally immortal (Because prophecies always come true in this series - albeit not always how you think)
Kratos is immortal because of Gaia’s curse. It’s mentioned in original GOW1 novel, if a god kills another god who is their kin they will be cursed to live forever. He also has the power of hope still inside him, as confirmed by Tyr. If hope exists he will come back to life.
his curse of walking the earth forever is the same curse that binds his family's ashes to his skin. It's not like the old woman decided "you've been bad, I'm going to make you white as a ghost." nah his curse is that he has to wander the earth for eternity, suffering for what he did to his family with their ashes bound to his skin. Even Athena wouldn't remove it. I know this because not only have the ashes faded a little bit but he's visibly grown older. My guess is the curse is slowly fading as he grows more redeemable. You can tell in the newer god of wars that he's not the same Kratos he was when he was younger. When he was younger, his path was his choice but in the new ones it was the Norse Gods making bad choices.
I think Kratos is still immortal, only the God magic that was bestowed upon him was taken. The Gods use the golden apples (Greek realm) or Idunn’s Apples (Norse Realm) only to maintain their youthful appearance, which is why Kratos is aging.
If Kratos is unconditionally immortal then the plot of Ragnarok was stupid regarding his death prophecy. Unless Kratos doesn't know hes immortal in that sense but i highly doubt he doesnt know on the account he keeps coming back. That being said he shouldve scoffed at the prophecy saying even if i die, I'll come back.

Kratos can't die for one reason. he killed Thanatos. when he killed Thanatos, the women who cursed him told him "he was Death". Kratos is not just the god of war, he is the god of war & death
Noice, but nah id win
Persephone cursed Kratos to walk the earth eternally
i don’t think it’s the curse, i think it’s that kratos is a unique god, unlike his others, he can return after death and is a undying immortal being, who can never have true death
@@callofdutyvulture9116 true I’ll have to revisit the comics. Been a while
Kratos is also the God Of Death and the “original” god of death was Thanatos but how could of Thanatos have died if he was Death itself.
Erasure would be counteracted by a third party, so on and so forth.
kratos didnt die in gow3,he just fell to the underworld from olympus
Not too mention his affinity for leaving the afterlife and coming back
Exactly, kratos IS dead, his original body is still in the temple impaled by the God of war.

Just existence erasure him it’s that simple
This is definitely an up and coming GoW channel!! Well done young man, impressive work.
Conclusion: Kratos just cant goddamn die.
Kratos is now powerful enough to stand against Thor but what if he gains the godly powers from the blade of Olympus again before going to the Egyptian pantheon

Right at the start; You seem to have missed the death where Ares pinned him to the Temple of Pandora all the way from Athens, his first death.

It's simple that he isn't what people think he's he's not the god of war he's god of death and death can't die
Think about how POWERFUL an entity must be to place a curse like that upon someone.
It's the power of the magic in the curse not necessarily the entity itself
Lunda was doing a pretty good job killing him with all the flirting.
Underrated comment.

I think it was the curse not to mention that Kratos is already dead that standing is just anger and suffering, the only way he dies is if he feels happy or leftover power from the end of God of War 3 that kept him alive, or simply the Santa Monica suits that didn't want to kill their sacred cow .
How to Defeat Kratos: Step one: Kill him. Step Two: Remove the "Break free" button.
Kratos is one of Many Characters which are so powerful that a Fight can only end in a Draw if both sides are truly unkillable

Source?
@abdbay One of the old devs was asked about it a long time ago during an impromptu Q&A. At the time, the plan was for the ashes and their curse to serve as a kind of Mark of Cain, if you will. Making Kratos both unkillable and a pariah. This of course also included being unable to take his own life.
If you also want a source for ambrosia/ichor, that would simply be Greek mythology itself.
Unfortunately this all means nothing to existence erasure.
Jump off the tree unprotected and watch him get erased from existence
“Forever for all to see for eternity” that’s the same thing…
He’s immortal as long as the Developers want him to be, simple as that. In other words, his immortality means MONNEEEH.

0:19 You totally forgot to mention that he died in God of War 1 as well. Remember Ares threw that big ass boulder across the desert at him?
That was a log Ares threw.
I dont count Zeus in god of war 3 killing him but Ares killed in him god of war 1 when he threw that pillar
And freya thought she had him 😂
Dead Kratos = Game Over
Its just like when Thor killed Kratos in their first fight he was fated to come back to life regardless.
So Kratos has conditional AND unconditional immortality stacked together. Damn man, that's hardcore
Because he's part mortal if he's killed in combat his soul goes to a mortals afterlife where he kills some more to get out because there's always a way out
The thumbnail is terrifying
I see many talking about possible source to Kratos' curse and it comes from Persephone when he killed her and forced atlus to hold up the world (from "Chains of Olympus") she curses him to forever walk the earth so the he could never reunite with his daughter even if he cleansed his soul again.
i think the only way to kill kratos is to have his own son do it. in the mural, i don't think it was really thor that killed him permanently, it was atreus accidentally by removing his soul. kratos is too angry to die by any other means and there is the cycle of destiny.
“Death can have me once it earns me”
Kratos is "The One." He is the ultimate solution for when a reality breaks itself and needs to be reset.
It could either be Hera or Athena here is the one that why is that because she is wearing the necklace that the old lady who was the Oracle wearing

Homie comes back to life after all
stand still during a boss fight :)
He is actually killed three times. Remember in God of War 1 when Ares threw a log of stone at him

Death can have him, when it earns him.
if you think about it, after ragnarok kratos becomes all the more powerful. getting prayers from the greek followers as the god of war, and the norse people as a god of peace.
The Norse don’t want no smoke with younger Kratos
Kratos is immortal because of Gaia’s curse. It’s mentioned in original GOW1 novel, if a god kills another god who is their kin they will be cursed to live forever. He also has the power of hope still inside him, as confirmed by Tyr. If hope exists he will come back to life.
Amazing breakdown
his curse of walking the earth forever is the same curse that binds his family's ashes to his skin.
It's different mythology, so he didn't know what kind of magic they had. Very important question: could Atreus take his soul?
