      I met Brocksmith's mother at some family thing when I was a child. I was doing a lot of stage acting at the time. She tried to convince me to follow my dream just like her son Roy, but her stories of how awful Hollywood was had the opposite of the intended effect.

    at the time of this movie, the sci fi movies had a good balance of spectacle and intelligent story so they satisfy on multiple levels. Nowadays we seem to have dispensed with all but spectacle. Now it seems that the sci fi movie plot is a little more than a means of stringing together a collection of spectacular special effects scenes.

    The Wachowskis did borrow the red pill thing from this film for The Matrix. But it was more an homage to Philip K. Dick. Besides this film "Total Recall" being based on Dick's story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", Dick also used the term "the matrix" all the way back in 1977 when he theorized we might live in computer simulation. So the whole thing was one big homage to him.

    If you like the Ducat was in this, you'll love to know Johnny Cab was Voyagers Doctor. Also the 3 breasted girl wsa Ensign Sonya Gomez from TNG. BTW the confusion between what was real and what was illusion was a running theme in the Philip K Dick's books. His movie adaptations are ALL very worth checking out, the list is quite stunning

    I think everything from the moment he sat down in Recall is all in his mind. Freaking out & getting dumped in the taxi (driver 'played' by Star Trek Voyager holographic Doctor Robert Picardo) is part of it too, cleverly convincing the audience there's a sinister conspiracy, but its all the memory implant. There's a couple of clues at Recall: The technician says at one point 'mmm...blue sky on Mars' (how would he know?) and the monitor above Quaid, as he chooses various options, one of the images is the terraforming reactor seen at the end of the movie. If its so secret, how would a commercial company like Recall possibly know about it?....unless they wrote the story:).

    • @southlondon86
      @southlondon86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But Quaid saw Melina in his dreams before Rekall... and coincidentally then happened to see her on the screen at Rekall before he has his implant.

    • @usgreth
      @usgreth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southlondon86 His dream may have been implanted before that and the real insertion of the dream erased. There was another suss moment dream or otherwise before that, at the building site. His co-worker/spy gave him a really hostile look after rekall was mentioned, which didn't fit his supposed concern.
      Oh one thing I forgot, if it was a dream, do people think it was all working properly and he will wake up entertained with a somewhat awkward time with his wife. Or did he suffer a neurological episode during the dream and end up lobotomised?

    • @southlondon86
      @southlondon86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@usgreth Sorry to be slow but do you mean that Rekall had inserted the dream even before we first see him in the film? So therefore when we see him going to Rekall in the film is all part of the ‘dream’?

    • @usgreth
      @usgreth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southlondon86 Potentially yes, since they can erase memories they could do it offscreen at any point and he wouldn't remember. His dreams of Melina would be the introduction to the story (as it is to the film), maybe when he wakes up he isn't even married to Sharon Stone, lol.

    Interpret what you wish, but I think the best explanation is (and only one that makes complete sense to me) : he is at Recall the whole time after going originally for treatment. However, it was also truly a past experience. He WAS a secret agent and he had a previous memory that had been taken away (MIN style retirement, burn notice, some similar explanation). When he woke up fighting in Recall, they put him back to sleep and fought to try to save him from his resistance to the treatment. It could not have been all actively happening after Recall because there were just too many similarities to the package's design. However, it also could NOT have been all completely created by Recall as part of the vacation because... he had a nightmare about almost dying on mars (very beginning suffocation scene matching the ending scene) BEFORE he went to Recall, showing some amount of the memory was already lived and hidden inside; plus, he clearly had a prepossessed obsession with mars (and possibly being a secret agent).
    I think him waking up fighting the technicians was real and present happenings (and everything before then). The technician hit him with a shot that put him back to sleep, but his dreams/memories morphed together and he began to relive past experiences while spending the rest of the time in the Recall chair. In the end, he either woke up and saw the bright lights of the operation room, or he died and they could not save him during the operation. The other two options (all real, all fake) don't hold up to scrutiny, so it has to be a blend of the two in some way.
    Anyway, enjoyed your reaction and analysis.
