- Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is a playground for billionaires. Teton County, where Jackson Hole is located, is the wealthiest county in the United States. It’s also the county with the highest income inequality. The town has been home to famous residents like Dick Cheney, Harrison Ford and Sandra Bullock, but it’s also home to a sizable unhoused and housing-insecure population. Tabish Talib traveled to Jackson to talk to the homeless people who live there and figure out why this extremely wealthy town can’t house its working class.

my wife's coworker at chick-fil-a is making 12 an hour, she's not homeless, she just bought herself a house near work. 30 miles north of Charlotte NC. if you make 24 an hour still homeless, time to move to a place that does not demand that much for a living, also, vote your political party that controls the city out, if dems or republican running the city for 20+ year can not solve your housing issue, time to vote those guys out.

I am near dc living in a very wealthy county I make 18 dollars I live with roommates homes here are 600 plus.

Yep when you look at the cost of living vs wages, people living now are working the hardest just to survive and to have the very basics. This is why so many younger people are getting annoyed with boomers. Boomers seem to refuse the actual facts and statistics just so they can feel better about being entitled and having had it EASY.

At age 54 I got layed off. Plant closed. I was a highly skilled employee. My hourly rate was $43.00 per hour. The same day I was let go I got a call. The president of another company offered me a job. $20.00 per hour. The plan for years was to retire at 55. He knew dam well that he was taking advantage of me. I didn't say a word. I had to stick with the plan. I spent exactly 1 year there to the day. Every dollar I made went into are retirement accounts. On my last day I didn't say a word. And walked out. I heard they tried to recruit different people from all over the country to replace me. I was very good at what I did. People from all over the country knew my work and that president knew it. I got the last laugh. After 39 years I was done.

43 per hour did you forget to save money. 20% housing means 9 dollars per hour should go to housing 9 per hour for housing that is 1375 bucks a month for housing but not good housing .crappy housing in texas is 1600 a month for 2 bedroom apt. its not the wages its the housing costs . if i made 43 per hour tho i would have saved 20k per year with a 89k yr salary .ive never made 89k a year but i still bought house .moneymanagement or go broke
@@davidicousgregorian My husband used to be a welder with 25 years experience who was only offered $20 hr at a wind turbine plant, the best job in town. while on fmla my husband was fired because they sold the plant to a Korean company who called him back and offered him $15 an hour. My husband uprooted us to move back to Missouri and now works for $41 an hour, but with inflation he still only has the purchasing power of $20 and hour. We are still living pay check to pay check due to the crazy high rent, We pay $1700 for a two bedroom apartment now and between groceries, gas, and medical expenses, we are still barely able to keep afloat.

The issue isn't the wage there, its the fact that narcissistic NIMBYs have blocked all new housing development for decades through control over zoning. It doesn't matter what wages are if the houses simply don't exist.

What I meant to say was that, whether it's caused by lack of affordable housing or people being underpaid, it's bonkers that we've been conned/coerced into accepting the idea that a person can work full time but still not have stable housing. Everyone working full time should have a place to live, either because housing is plentiful or because full time jobs pay enough to guarantee housing. It's late and I'm tired, hope this makes sense.

I’m only in the beginning of this video but I can tell you all that things have gotten so bad for me financially that I’ve considered taking my own life multiple times. I used to work and I had everything that I needed. It was like after covid everything went downhill the 3 yrs following. Including my health. It started with swelling in my legs and then went from one thing to another. I can’t even explain the feeling that I have sometimes. I pray for these people. Every single one of them that GOD blesses each of them and provides what they need. It’s not fun

Please don't take your own life, no matter what. I wanted to do the same at a point when I was hopeless but I am glad I didn't because things are now changing positively for me. Remember, when there is life, there is hope.

Yea it’s quite sad. I live with in WA state and I’m struggling to find a place to even live. I’ve been staying in a hotel long term because it seems like landlords want you to make 3-5 times the rent but the government doesn’t want to pay people more. It’s extremely frustrating and exhausting.

I lost my home after I couldn't afford the high homeowners' insurance rate. My job closed down after the hurricane. Yet I was blessed to have family that encouraged me and helped me for a while. Now I'm able to do the same to help other family and friends. When I've saved enough, I share food with this small group living behind the news station. I don't know why, but the more I see them, the more I worry about them.
The biggest problem is not a big enough diversification of housing units to support the mixed range of salaries. When developers insist on only building "luxury" apartments they eliminate a good majority of people. I'd love to see studio units (clean, comfortable and modern) like they build in Asia. Not everyone wants or needs big living spaces and most don't use the "luxury" amenities that cost exuberant price hikes.
Such a good point! I wonder if there is state legislation to say that you have to build a certain percentage of housing in the high, medium and low price range. Sure enough what I see is that most of the things being built now , including rentals are out of reach for many people.

No more maids, waiters, dishwashers, trash haulers, home health aides, nurse’s assistants, food workers, stockroom workers, deliverers, nannies, teaching assistants, launderers, lawn care and landscapers, etc. They’ll have to do it themselves or make provision for workers. And when the workers get older? Does anyone expect 60+ year olds to be working 70+ hours a week while living in a tent?

Not going to lie, I am single in Florida and I live a good life. I do sometimes waste money, but there is no way at the current housing rates and my salary as a teacher (50k) I could afford to purchase a regular home that costs around 350k in my area. I’m so thankful I bought my condo about 5 years ago. To all of you trying to make it, sending prayers your way and hoping you will find programs and tools to help you make your home purchase or get to where you need to be. It’s rough out there.

This is why I'm hoping to move out of the US soon. I've had enough. Not just of the fact that hard work doesn't mean anything but just everything. The divisiveness, the consumerism, the constant stress and anger and depression and anxiety. It's too much.
Moving out of the country is harder than you think and these countries expect you to be bringing in a certain amount of money monthly or you are not allowed to live there. Some of them require over $2,000 a month of income and you must prove it. You can't just go to whatever country and decide you want to live there there are rules and laws.

I'm a single 60 yr old lady. I make 17.00 hrly, no insurance, work 47 hrs wkly n get paid for 35. Several times I'm forced to work 12 hr days n get paid 7.5 hrs. Paycheck is never the same day Worked hard all my life and I'm one paycheck away from the street. Sometimes I just want to give up.

You had the chance to buy a home for a reasonable cost, go to college for very little. Imagine the people younger than you that never even had those benefits and still face the same hardships.
You could contact the Federal Department of Labor and Wage. Your employer is literally doing something illegal in not paying you time+ half after 40hrs I think. Also, retaliation for reporting them is also illegal. A job I had years ago was cracked down on. Hope this helps.
It's really sad and shocking to see how some homeowners would choose a rodeo arena over an affordable housing project to house the homeless struggling to make ends meet so they could afford a home and a decent living. It's like they lost their empathy for fellow humans. Shame for the NIMBYISM movement. More power to Ms. Jessica Sell Chambers and others who champion affordable housing. We need more people like her with the actual sympathy for the homeless and the disadvantaged.

It's even worse on disability income! I get $1100 a month, and my rent is $700 a month. So, I live on $400 a month, and by the end of the month there's less than nothing. I live in one of the most expensive states in the U.S. When people say, "Pack up and move to a cheaper state" I'm like, with what money? I don't have savings! I heard Alabama is one of the cheapest states in the country, but that's thousands of miles away. Even if I left 99% of my possessions behind and took a bus it would still be expensive! And with what money am I gonna pay this cheaper rent in Alabama, when they're gonna decrease my disability income based on living in a cheaper state? The system is designed for us to stay poor.

I earned my bachelors 2 years ago and I still can’t find decent pay. The highest I was offered with years of experience in the field was $24. The most ridiculous one I got was $17 pay with no benefits. It’s hard. Now I have 2 jobs and still live with my mom. Multiple times she’s urged me to move out, but she doesn’t understand how much apartments are these days. A place in OC is $2,400 a month! There is no way with me working two jobs am I even close to affording it along with my other bills. It’s utterly ridiculous

In school we are all taught we will need a place to live. I graduated high school in 1980. The first thing I did with my earnings from my summer time jobs was buy a used mobile home for $1,250. Then I purchased an ace land in the country for $2,500. The septic tank cost me $1,600 and water meter was $300. A total of around $6,000 That was 42 years ago. I still live in the same place, rent free till this day . I have always made any necessary repairs myself and my trailer is still in great shape and everything works as intended. That averages out to be $142 a year and less than $12 a month this far for a place to live and own. No one telling me what I can and cannot do. I didn't have to worry about being evicted when COVID-19 hit, or a dreaded knock on your door from the owner. Why people RENT never made sense to me when you can OWN.

This is horrible. I live in Dallas. Just 7 years ago you could find an affordable place to live in Dallas. 7 years later Dallas has turned into NYC and San Francisco. Rent prices have doubled and tripped in just 7 years. It’s shameful.

As the lady in the video said, Jackson had a housing crisis when she moved there in 1976. JH is a unique destination. It is horrific to see places like Dallas that were really affordable cities skyrocket in price. I'm in Phoenix. It was still "affordable" for a US city when we got here in 2020, but it has doubled.
supply and demand. people need to say NO and walk away from these expensive places. then the cost will come down. don't blame landlords or governments. blame the people that keep moving there and refusing to leave and ACCEPTING these prices. they're creating these cost increases.

It's how it is here in Maine too. Most of them don't even drain the pipes and close them up. They leave the heat on and fridge running with beverages in them.
Yup, have an accounting degree and got straight A's. Got out and couldn't find anything in accounting. Started part time at Home Depot for $11/hr. Worked my way up to lumber and hardware department supervisor for $19/hr. Eventually was promised a promotion to asst manager but was lied to and left the company. Throughout all this I lived with parents because I can't afford a home or rent even.
i’m about to be in the same boat in a year. good grades, about to graduate, yet still struggling to find a job. i did everything right, i made my whole life about academics, playing the safe option, and yet society has deemed that i suffer for it. if i had flunked in highschool or dropped out of college right now, i’m sure i’d get the same result.
Where I'm at in North Carolina most common jobs start you at around $15/hour. My rent has been increased by extra 50% in just the past two years. I never lived anywhere where my rent was increased by more than 5-10% a year before, but the shortage in housing and cost/stress of relocating made me stay. At some point last year I was working two jobs at that rate and got burned out. Almost every person I met at those jobs was working 2 jobs unless they were married and had support from their partner
It's because the "trickle down" Nimby mentality is all over the country. They concocted this whole fake draconian "single 'family' 'zoning'" nonsense to artificially prop up their almighty "home values" at any cost to society. That's main reason why rents have skyrocketed everywhere.

Free market forces will eventually even things out. If lower paid people can't afford to live there, they will leave. That will cause a shortage of workers that will, in turn, raise wages. It's impossible to have a closed system (no nearby place where lower paid people can afford to live) where everyone is wealthy.
They really really don't care and are completely out of touch with reality. Wish they could have everything shipped to them. Every good and service. As if it is a thing and can be easily placed here and there with money. Everything is solved by money. A piece of paper or a number in a bank account.

It’s the same situation here in Virginia ! Especially in Northern Va. but seems to be out of sight anywhere in the state. Construction of new rentals And new homes , are through the sky, but the pricing has put the units out of reach for those folks on social security and those making $20-$25 per hr.

It's the same here in Florida too. Anything less than $25/hr you just can't afford rent anywhere. Yet the minimum wage in this state is still set at $11/hr. Wages/cost of rent are a joke anymore. I'm ready for people to start rioting in the streets.

That’s like out here in Boise, Idaho. Studio-1bdrm 1100-1800/month 2bdrm 1600-2000+ all have no pets a shit ton of rules and require first last and security deposit(basically 3 months of rent upfront) and require making 3x’s the rent. $30/hr minimum to get into a place where my son and I can have our own bedrooms. Minimum wage here is still 7.25 most places are paying 10-15/hr. Everything has gone up so much to the point where the people that keep all the businesses open are having a hell of a time being able to stay. Businesses closing down left and right. So many rentals on the market but prices aren’t budging at all
When i was a kid in NYC, a dad who was a postal mail carrier or city bus driver could support a family and own a home in a borough.
Moms raised the big families everyone had back then.

I grew up in NYC in the 70s and 80s. Cab drivers owned homes in my neighborhood. Laborers on construction sites. Bus drivers, prison guards, cops, firemen. A guy who cleaned carpets. My friend's dad was a long haul trucker. Lots of people "right off the boat." Practically every dad was a violent drunk, but that's a different story.

My friend is 73 and lives in his car he worked for over 50 years sometimes 7 days a week. Rent 30 years ago was $180 with everything included on the beach in Florida and rent is now $2k to $7k here.
I lived and worked there from 2004 to 2008. I did employee housing, renting, living my van, camping. It was a problem back then. So beautiful there, but the rich people really spoil it.

This happened to me in Austin, Texas. Working while homeless, having hundreds of dollars yet not enough to keep you housed. I currently live in Minnesota making $40,000 a year and rent is reasonable. However it gets freaking cold here.

That’s how it is everyone wants to live in Texas California new York and Florida so for those places and all the other popular places to live prices for everything especially housing is excessively high af compared to places like North Carolina where I’m currently paying 800 for a 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom and my neighbor is paying 600 for a 2 bed 1 bath but the catch is there’s no work here except gas stations farms and auto shops so I got to drive 30 minutes everyday to my job in Virginia and 30 minutes back to my house in North Carolina there’s always pros and cons to everything

I was in Jackson during COVID working and they have the nicest people in the community and working with their health department....it is just crazy knowing the people who work there are taking long drives up and down the mountains rain or snow to get to work since they couldn't afford rent in Jackson hole.... Just a note, many cities have ordinances exclusively targeted to disempower less fortunate people. In my case, I couldn't afford housing anymore, so I was able to find a nice RV for cheap. I didn't know how aggressive NIMBY (not in my back yard) is. It essentially weaponizes the police to ensure city code is enforced. I found out it was illegal to have an RV, even in your own driveway should you own your own home! We as a country need to get back to basics and learn to value empathy, human connection, and community.

Well consider that over 70% of all Americans have less than $500 in savings, most people are one minor life issue away from being homeless. Anyone can be laid off, and ones education or skillets have been proven to be disposable or potentially obsolete. I think it's important to have compassion for your fellow human. We are all so certain of our position until the day we see what the other side of that coin looks like. Be appreciative of what you have and have empathy for those that do not. Understand that others may not make the same choices that you have, you have been fortunate. I believe true success is the lifting of others so they to can learn to be great and giving to make sure those around you are well and happy.

If you think other countries have cheaper living expenses, I have poor news for you. The major difference is that people in other countries often have roommates or get married much earlier in life, thus splitting rent or a mortgage evenly.

I realize this is a year old report, so a belated thank you for it's indepth and eye-opening information gathering by your staff.
It reveals how government at all levels has failed the working class, the "blue collar" workers of this country. And, it's both sad and infuriating that legislators just don't care.
To put it in perspective the median home price in my area of san diego ca is 800k with an 8.2% apr interest rate on a 30year mortage with all taxes fees etc will cost around $7500/a month and in order to qualify with the proper debt to income ratio you will either need to make 150k a year combined or on your own its insane 🤯

I noticed that two things seem to be driving the housing problem in a lot of towns. First, you have quiant small towns that become holiday spots for the rich, and they gobble up all the houses. Then the people with the low-paid jobs (or the municipal employees) can't afford a place. Then you have the stupid building codes. My father wanted to buy an old wreck next door, and build a large three-storey home, with an apartment that could be rented out, but the town said no. They didn't want houses with apartments. It would make the block look low-class. The result? A huge house was built next door, nobody could afford the price, it sat empty for years, until the town had to seize it for taxes and auction it off.
In rural Tennessee, you could purchase a nice home for around 50 grand prior to the swarm of UAW retirees that flooded the area. Now, because their retirement vastly outpaces any person even working seven days a week, homes are 200 grand and up! The retiring Boomers come in like a plague and drive up costs to levels never imagined before.

Phoenix was unofficially "The most affordable city in the west" in the 2000's. I believe they may have been forced to relinquish that distinction in the 2020's. EXAMPLE: When I moved there in 2010, a 3 year old 1 bedroom 1 bath 810 Sq. Ft .luxury apartment with a balcony in an upscale suburb of Phoenix rented for $785.00 per month. As of the date of this comment, that now 16 year apartment floorplan rents for "Starting at $1529.00 per month.
In LA $1500 may only get you an studio.

I got lucky in Phoenix... 990 for our 2 bedroom, moves to a 1 bedroom and it was raised to 1185. I bought a townhouse in 2019 and refinanced this year. my mortgage is 840. That same apartment 6 years later is 2500 a month.
In Boynton beach Florida a one bedroom went from. $1350 a month in 2018 to $2000 a month in 2022. A two bedroom ranges from 2500-3000

Ive been homeless for the last 5 years I make $20 an hour at my job now. I made $25 an hour last summer and still barely made enough to afford food and my car insurance/ phone bill. I'm honestly losing all hope in ever being able to rent or have a roof over my head ever again. I was better off when I didn't work at all and just lived in the woods eating squirrels and edible plants
Believe me being poor in America is better than in INDONESIA, in America it is still easy to get a job whereas in Indonesia it is limited by age and gender and wages are low. This is happening all over Colorado. I’ve been offered jobs in ski towns and had to turn them down because l couldn’t find a place to live. For one job l commuted 2 hours each way via an employee shuttle.
During COVID they got rid of the shuttle and l was sleeping on the side of the road. They never reinstated the shuttle so l had to quit.
I have been living in a 5th wheel trailer in a park for over 5 years….. I feel homeless even though I have an address. Collectively between two incomes here we earn $150k per year and don’t want to afford a house. We could but would end up paying $2k per month for a house….. phuck that

Here where 60% of the land is in the national park and the rest is either developed or in conservation easements there is very little land available to build housing. Furthermore, what land that could be built on is VERY expensive. And yes, I am very familiar with eastern Washington, having grown up in Washington. Also most of the businesses here are seasonal and don't generate enough cash flow during the 5-6 month season when they are open to build employee housing even if they could get a permit. There is a lot of NIMBYism here. NIMBY is not a problem on a four section whet farm.

The problem is not that people are not working or not making enough money working full time,the problem is that local state politicians, allowing real estate developers to get away with renovating older buildings, converting them into Condominiums, building new luxury apartment, and big houses leaving out the working class not to be able to afford ridiculous high rets and mortgages. Thev only folks that can are the wealthy. I remember back when working regular folks, could live in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 70s 80s and 90s, folks with regular incomes still have money to save and cover life basic necessaries, without worrying every day we're going to have enough to cover rent.

Rents were affordable not so long ago. But over past 20 some years it's gone completely off the rails. You can't even rent an apartment in some little town in West Virginia in the middle of nowhere where you're lucky to find a job at a gas station for minimum wage without the rent being $800 a month. It didn't used to be that way.
Maybe but wealthy people also want to have top class services and are ready to pay for quality. They need people to take care of their homes, children, health, appearance...they want to be entertained, eat top quality meals and have activities. If they want that, if they pay good money for it, even a hairdresser, a nanny or a plumber will be able to afford living there even in good apartments. Maybe those wealthy people will stand up and ask municipality to attract those qualified high end workers to get what they need. They cannot just hide in their villas alone the whole time. if everything is brought up, it can become a new balance at a higher level.
I see it often here in Sweden that many foreigners when they arrive complaining about services that are super expensive. But on the other hand, everyone makes a good living and you do not see people complaining about their work, even if it is not a very qualified type of job, because all jobs pay well at the end.

I make $25 an hour. I still can't move out of my parents house, not because rentals still get snatched as soon as they're available, but I don't even qualify for the 3x income requirement for these rentals as I can't even find a studio for under $2,000 a month, let alone anything else.

I live in new Mexico and work in a factory making $20.39 an hour but get paid extra when I work overtime. You could rent an apartment for about $600 a month in some places in the state about $500. You buy houses for less than $100k and the minimum wage is $12 an hour but some businesses pay more than $15 an hour. Gas prices are about $3.50 a gallon in some places. Your not stuck in traffic like in the big cities unless you live in Albuquerque

This is the same for areas surrounding military bases. Price for housing goes up, military pay goes up to meet the housing price, the entire area is affected.
I see a lot of these videos about Jackson Hole or San Francisco etc. but ya'll need to also start making videos about this same problem is happening even in small towns all over the country. Well, it mentioned a lot of the mansions have live-in cooks, nannies, landscapers, and yoga instructors. I would assume the issue is for people working in the retail and restaurant industries among other middle class jobs (i.e. utilities). The town needs to work on having housing available for that demographic. For example, the guy at the shelter/dorm is paying around $450 a month to live there and at $20/hr, he could definitely afford a $600-800 a month apartment. He could probably even manage $1000/month if he was stretching himself a little thin.

Sadly, America seems to be headed where it started as far as labor is concerned. Only difference is now it may soon be the norm to live on the streets.
A perfect storm is brewing in the United States.
Inflation, bank collapse, severe drought in the agricultural belt, recession, food shortages, diesel fuel and heating oil shortages, baby formula shortages, available automobile shortages and prices, the price of living place. It's all coming together and it could lead to a real disaster towards the end of this year (or sooner). With inflation currently at about 6%, my primary concern is how to maximize my savings/retirement fund of about $300k which has been sitting duck since forever with zero to no gains.
