From a review I heard it's to introduce new audiences to the story. She wasn't named in the books from what I hear so they using her as a stepping stone I guess for those who never even heard of the other characters.
New audience means they want a “strong female lead with agency.” Because there aren’t enough movies or video games with “strong female leads with agency.”😂. I’m all for good characters, male, female , whatever . Typically modern female characters just aren’t interesting. They’re almost not human. It's worse than that. The story isn't even about Helm Hammerhand. It's literally about his daughter finding a "secret tribe of all women warriors who were lost to history." The trailer is 100% a bait and switch.
They kinda have to do that. Rings of Power is completely separate from the Peter Jackson/Warner Brothers movies and isn't connected to them in any way. @@ulmo-r4z the good characters in Tolkien's writings don't talk like that. The Rohirrim were gifted the land of Rohan after Eorl the Young came to Gondor's aid. The Rohirrim respresent an idealize model of an honorable culture. He didn't understand Tolkien's vision for the Rohirrim. In the books, Theoden (once freed from Saruman's spell by Gandalf) never questions that he would ride to Gondor's aid. He is bound by ancient oaths to do so. Breaking oaths has very serious consequences in Tolkien's writings. The Dead that Aragorn rallies to his cause are testament to that. Each location feels distinct and cohesive in its aesthetic - The horses are very well-drawn - The men of the Rohirrim are dressed excellently, and outfits are varied according to whether they are at leisure, riding to war, etc., but still with a cohesion that conveys a well-fleshed out culture - Helm's daughter's dresses in the beginning shots are beautiful, reminiscent of Miranda Otto as Eowyn without being identical - Inclusion of a range of more fantastical Middle Earth features (e.g. Orcs, Great Eagles, Mumakil, a creature similar to the Watcher of the Deep) - Great line delivery by a number of characters (e.g. Brian Cox: "My pride, my joy") - Multiple perspectives (e.g. Helm's daughter on her journey vs the Rohirrim defending Rohan) and subplots (e.g. the person collecting rings) - hopefully these will be well-balanced and interwoven Negative: - Multiple LOTR clips for the first 15-20 seconds feels a little heavy handed (though this is a minor point, as the transition with "through the eyes of legendary director Kenji Kamiyama" was good) - Dunlending outfits look a tad generic (with the exception of Wulf and his father) - Brian Cox's delivery of his speech to his men might be accused of drawing too heavily from Bernard Hill - Miranda Otto's voice randomly cuts out at 0:28 - Lip syncing to line delivery is not always good - Not a lot of Helm Hammerhand - Helm's daughter's riding outfit seems very out of place with the rest of the outfits in the film

This is the end of Helm Hammerhand's reign actually. There actually isn't a whole lot written about it beyond it being a time when The Rohirrim were at war with the Dunlander's and Easterlings over the right to rule the realm. Helm Hammerhand eventually dies in the defense of Rohan and his daughter leads his people to victory after his death. So it's all kosher canon wise.
From the Wiki about Tolkien's Helm Hammerhand story: The scene about the arranged marriage appears to be accurate to the book. The Wiki then says this incident started a war between the tribes, initiated by the "evil" tribe seeking revenge against Helm's tribe for the death of their leader. As an aside, Peter Jackson screwed this up. He didn't understand Tolkien's vision for the Rohirrim. In the books, Theoden (once freed from Saruman's spell by Gandalf) never questions that he would ride to Gondor's aid. He is bound by ancient oaths to do so. Positive:
- Miranda Otto's narration sounds perfect
- Beautiful scenery such as Helm's Deep, Edoras, the high mountains, and forests. Each location feels distinct and cohesive in its aesthetic
- The horses are very well-drawn
- The men of the Rohirrim are dressed excellently, and outfits are varied according to whether they are at leisure, riding to war, etc., but still with a cohesion that conveys a well-fleshed out culture
- Helm's daughter's dresses in the beginning shots are beautiful, reminiscent of Miranda Otto as Eowyn without being identical
- Inclusion of a range of more fantastical Middle Earth features (e.g. Orcs, Great Eagles, Mumakil, a creature similar to the Watcher of the Deep)
- Great line delivery by a number of characters (e.g. Brian Cox: "My pride, my joy")
- Multiple perspectives (e.g. Helm's daughter on her journey vs the Rohirrim defending Rohan) and subplots (e.g. the person collecting rings) - hopefully these will be well-balanced and interwoven
Negative:
- Multiple LOTR clips for the first 15-20 seconds feels a little heavy handed (though this is a minor point, as the transition with "through the eyes of legendary director Kenji Kamiyama" was good)
- Dunlending outfits look a tad generic (with the exception of Wulf and his father)
- Brian Cox's delivery of his speech to his men might be accused of drawing too heavily from Bernard Hill
- Miranda Otto's voice randomly cuts out at 0:28
- Lip syncing to line delivery is not always good
- Not a lot of Helm Hammerhand
- Helm's daughter's riding outfit seems very out of place with the rest of the outfits in the film
For me the Brian Cox speech is a positive
Her riding outfit confused me so much at first. She literally looked undressed in some scenes.
I gotta make a point about the lip syncing, anime generally does not have the best lip syncing, because i imagine its quite time consuming to animate accurately. Tolkien fan here as well. My collection of books stands just next to me. This director is the same of Ghost in the Shell, Kenji Kamiyama. He's used to writing female characters who don't have men coming to their rescues. So, yes, it'll be good.
And it's not even me who's overexcited, it's my best friend who's overjoyed because Ghost is one of his favourite animes.
That’s how I feel. The Rings of P(uke) didn’t even try to stay true to the source material, or Tolkien’s vision. I hope this does.

I love the art! Reminds me of Berserk a bit. Looks gritty, hopefully the animation holds up for all the action sequences.
Given how Lord of the Rings was first adapted in animated form, this is just Tolkien's story coming full circle.

One thing that's not in the story is any mention of Helm's daughter outside of her being part of the attempted arranged marriage. Helm, his two sons and his nephew fight in the war, but not her. She isn't even given a name in the book, although the other characters are. So, everything in this trailer involving Helm's daughter, after the marriage incident, is apparently an invention of the movie's writers.
I wonder why they made her the most important character? And why she is blowing the horn instead of Helm?
