Thanks! My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee finally needed a new battery. I watched a few videos before this one but they were confusing a bit and then yours was crystal clear. One thing that was overlooked: don't forget to plug the unused hole on the positive side with the little plastic plug that comes with the new battery.
I want to thank Overtake for this video. It has helped me replace my battery in less than thirty minutes. The information was precise and to the point. Thank you!
Thank you for posting! I saved $200 + and since my wife is the primary driver of our Jeep, and we live far from town, I’m a lot more confident she will be safe. By the way, I found a dime, not a quarter under my seat.
Had my jeep for 5 years and never knew battery was under seat until i had to change it. Your video was very helpful. I found it easier to deal with the positive terminal by putting seat all way back and get to it from the front. Not as easy changing battery like it used to be. Thanks for the help
Actually, yes, it is...there are battery jumper connections adjacent to the right-front hood hinge (marked with red and black plastic covers) so you can jump it in a traditional manner. :)
Dude...you rock...mine lasted 7 years!! Factory special order Summit diesel and I had no idea the battery was under P-seat! I see lot's of comments about how to jump if dead...jumper connections are UNDER-HOOD, immediately adjacent to the right-front hood hinge under red-n-black plastic factory covers...EASY DEAL!!
One small addition, the battery has two vent holes and only one is used in the Jeep. The small plastic bag attached to the back end of the battery has a small plug that should be used to close the forward hole on the battery. Might keep a little acid vapor out of the passenger compartment. Bag is visible at 9:35
Remember you only have 17minutes to install the new battery before all your radio stations and car electrical settings are completely erased. So keep that in mind
@billt460 Took me about 10 minutes, from cables disconnected to reconnected. Removed bracket before disconnecting. Also slid seat back for easier access to front of battery (not a power seat).
I just replaced the original battery on my 2012 V6, a few comments: --Remove the battery bracket before removing the negative and positive terminals. Once the bracket was removed, I was able to pull the battery towards me and that made access to the positive terminal much easier. --The OEM battery only had one vent hole, but the aftermarket had two vent holes; don't forget to plug the vent-hole that is not being used. --10mm for the terminals and a deep socket 13mm with a 12-inch extension for the bracket. --I didn't use a memory saver and the radio stations were saved. --The O-Reilly's Super Start H7 AGM fit perfectly.
Nice video, it saved me lots of time. Getting the battery out was easy but I had a couple complications putting the new one in. 1) may want wear gloves when lowering the battery into the compartment. I skinned my finger pretty good on the edge of something. 2) be sure to plug the breather hole on the far side. The new plug was on the plastic cover of the positive terminal on my new battery. 3) don't install the bracket until the positive terminal is connected. I didn't have enough space to wedge it on and needed to move the battery forward a little. 4) Have a magnet handy if your 13 mm drive can't hold the nuts. 5) the negative terminal connection isn't tight and it can slip off. According to other You-tubers I need a terminal shim.
This is all good.ideas and suggestions. I connected jumper cables from another car...not from battery to battery but from battery terminal connections under the hood. This keep power to all settings in the Jeep while I changed out old battery...but to be safe I used a disposable glove over each terminal as I disconnected them as they will have power to them from the other car, and the tip to connect the positive terminal before sliding forward is a must. All in all about 45 minutes and no way not to bang up your knuckles getting out....putting new one in was easy peasy. Battery was $229 from Auto Zone. No extra vent plug came with my battery so took out the one from the old battery. By the way got 110,000 miles out of original battery.
Dude, I read this after I did the job to thank the video poster and realized I forgot to plug the far hole so I fished out the red cover from the trash and opened her up put the plug in. Thanks. I’ll read the comments first next time.
A couple of minor revisions to the procedure that may help and take it for what it’s worth. For the front clips. Run the seat about 3/4 way AFT while still bing full UP. Release the front clips with the screwdriver as before but easier access. After that run seat full forward and continue with video steps. Bracket: since I was reading about the 17 minute time limit before internal memory erase I removed the bracket first. Then removed the terminals. Same result and added another couple of minutes to the “Play Clock”. For installation you can loosely install the bracket, connect the terminals THEN final torque of the bracket. What I also noticed was for a 2014 even though the terminal connections looked like the first day at the factory the bracket hold down nits looked trashed and corroded. Threaded fine but possibly different metals. I would have expected better condition of the bracket nits especially being inside the vehicle not exposed to the elements. Other than that spot on!!
Your video was great. Was going to attempt changing it myself but need the new battery and a friend of mine is going to put it in. Praying it’s the battery as has been sitting awhile.
Just replaced for a 2017 model v6, there were actually 2 batteries, one small one, otherwise straight forward as the video, our passenger seat was manual so it was easy to move the seat back and forth. we picked up a H6 from Costco here in Ontario, Canada.
When a "very challenged at anything requiring a tool" can do this job in 15 minutes you know this is a terrific how to video. Thank you. Notes: three quarters, one dime, two highly corroded pennies found.
Thanks! This was useful. I just replaced mine today (had enough juice to scoot the seat forward at least). I got a replacement from Batteries+Bulbs for ~$200. All in all not a bad deal. Appreciate the insight for how to change it.
I'm going to do my battery soon.. I have 130K on my 2013 and the factory battery is still running very strong. I just don't feel like getting stranded so I'm going to swap it out ahead. I'm impressed with the longevity of the factory battery though> i'll keep it as a spare.
Wow 130k! That IS good. My battery was still working when i changed it at 95k miles, but you could tell when starting the car that it just didn't have the cranking power it used to. It was gradually getting worse and my fear was it would get to the point where the car would not start--so I wanted to change it before that happened.
I have a Kubota 50 hp tractor with a factory battery going on 9 years old still going strong. Would think with battery in cooler environment would last longer. There are battery posts under hood to jumpstart car by the way.
Great refresher - For anyone putting an Odyssey performance battery in their Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011-2017 with a 3.6L, their computer checker is wrong. It wants you to buy the 49-950, however, that is too long for the bracket. Apparently the 49-950 was designed for the 3.6L diesel only. For a 3.6L, you need the 94R-850 like the 5.7L and 6.4L.
everything in your your video is spot on for my jeep grand 2014. only difference is i cant pull battery out, even after removing bracket. it seems to sit in a tray that is bolted to the frame somehow. going to look under the vehicle, but any ideas?
update. just had to REALLY pull the thing up. it was more or less glued down, but finally got it. a note that i got the H8 version of the battery (both H7 and larger H8 were supposed to fit), but looks like with H8 you need a different size bracket - this is also mentioned in comments. so i returned and got the H7 size which matched original. i had to take out a plug from the original battery to block the vent hole on the + side of battery. used breather tube on the - side, same as original battery. thank you for VERY clear video. was going to keep power going to save memory, but looks like if you change battery fast enough you dont need to worry about it. i was without battery for only about 10 minutes, and everything saved. was quoted $600 to change battery, but did it for $249 and a $6 socket extenders - needed about 10 inches. THANK YOU.
Super video. Professionally narrated and executed, start to finish with military efficiency. Positive inputs/tips from the comments below. The only thing I would have done differently is take those headphones or hearing pro that were in the back seat net and fling them across the driveway (after bumping my heard into them a few times). I know you didn't do that because your kids were out there playing. I also note that you made money on the video with the discovery of loose change on the floor.
I just replaced my battery with an AGM from autozon. MY previous battery WAS mopar and it didn't have the vent tube connected at all, but when I replaced my old battery and put the new one, the cover where the battery goes, It gives directions on how to install and reinstall, it says that the vent tube has to go on the positive. Not on the negative so I'm a little confused. I don't have the tube connected right now because it doesn't reach to the positive side like the cover says, so I left it unplugged. Can someone explain please?
I used your video to replace my wife's battery i her 2014 and it was very helpful. One question I have for you, did your Transfer Case Motor start making 3 to 4 second clicking noises when you shift into R, N, D and or back in to park? It makes no sense to me but hers now is making those clicking noises and the dealership of course is of no help unless I want hand them a hundred dollar bill.
Just bought a 2014 Grand Cherokee for the wife. I had no concept how much automotive technology had changed since buying our last car...10 years ago! In any case, I appreciated your video; the information you presented was a good step-by-step tutorial for battery replacement. The only question I still have is, "Does something need to be done to preserve the car's computerized memory and settings while the battery is disconnected." At the end of the video, I did notice some wires that seemed to be trailing from your 12 volt auxiliary dash plug. Were these connected, via the auxiliary plug, to some sort of outboard 12 volt DC power supply or battery, for the purpose of maintaining the car's memory settings...or is this not a concern on a Jeep Grand Cherokee? Thanks for your help.
Calvin Blumhorst First, thank you for your kind words! You do not need to do anything. I don't believe any of my settings were erased except maybe my saved radio station presets. I did not have any auxiliary power source hooked up during replacement of the battery. I hope this helps!
Usually there is a code card attached to your original key with the radio code. I did not have this issue though when doing mine....! Was your original battery completely dead or disconnected for an extended period of time? I would also think you could reach out to FCA and provide proof of ownership and they could provide you with the code. Good luck!
Thank you for taking time to create and post this video you. You shared very useful and helpful info and save me a little more than $200. Thanks again!
I kind of thought that might be the case but... if one doesn't ask and verify one might create more issues. I really appreciate the response!! Very cool!
Thanks for the video. If you want some extra juice, you can buy (or modify the existing) diesel model battery bracket and then fit the bigger 95A / CCA 850 AGM battery. Standard size 353x175x190 mm - +. They are like 150$
I changed batteries in my Jeep Cherokee 5.7 limited 2006 in doing so my door speakers no longer work, the dash speakers work but not the door or rear speakers!!!!any eyedear what’s happening
Good hint. ALWAYS. Start engine, and ensure proper vehicle operation prior to installing the final access cover and the seat. Long way to go, I guess in this case it worked out if the seat didn’t work then that would be a good clue that something was either loose or not connected at all. I would start and make sure no stray sparks before installing the access cover.
Mine went dead too. I charged it enough to start with the correct battery charger set to AGM mode then drove it to the local chain type auto parts store and they changed it out free.
On the dashboard of my 2014 cherokee it has a low battery message I changed the battery for a new one but it still has the message. Could it be that the problem was not the battery?
does it change the settings on the programming when you dont supply alternate power while battery is out does the engine have to relearn driving habits thanks
@@CodeDonut hi CodeDonut, by any chance does the “reset” require you to take it in to the dealer to update the cars computer? I want to change my battery but I don’t have an extra battery supply and don’t want to ruin anything
@@stevoe7385 usually no, simply system will just "factory default." so all custom settings and saved radio stations will go back to the way it came from the dealership.
Gelo_ 702 or alternatively maybe you can use the jumper points under the hood to get enough juice to at least move the seat forward and out of the way.
Great video! Clear and Concise. Question: Not sure if my problem is a battery going bad. or not... Had several Service/Alert lights all turn on at the same time in my dashboard. ALL at the same time along with the Cruise Control going out. 2017 Jeep GC still runs fine, but the ABS, Electronic Stability, and Service 4WD lights all turning on at the same time made me suspicious of the battery. I put a Code Reader on it and NO CODES came up??? Thoughts?
Best tutorial on this task I've seen. Nice work! I hope you took that quarter out before replacing the batter....as a personal "tip" for a job well done, of course! 😏
Other than an ecm error (small evap leak) that keeps appearing this is the only problem I’ve had with my Jeep GC. The batter was original (7 years old in Vegas weather) I think because it is not in the engine compartment.
I would normally put my plug in for the terminal protective grease about this time but since the battery is not under the hood exposed to the elements maybe not as much. With the terminals being inside in a much more climate controlled cabin the terminals look as fresh as they were from the factory. Overtake...>How say you?
Can you post a link to the new battery you swapped out? I cannot find one that fits properly. All the local stores carry ones that are too long so i cant get the brace back in. Thanks
Very useful video, thanks. 2012 UK model Overland, battery died and I couldn't find it under the bonnet (hood)! D'oh, under the seat! New lifetime warranty battery bought, fairly good price at £150 (($210) for a heavy duty like this, and watching your vid helped as I realised I needed a ratchet extension first... whole swap out took 20 mins and was really straightforward. My only difference was an additional tow bar electrics in line fuse running off the positive terminal. Really useful vid, thanks.
Hi, Thanks for that. Someone said that my problem may be an "SLI battery". When I push the starter button, nothing happens and the interior lights don't come on when the door is open. Yet I can start it if I use a jumper... What is an SLI Battery and where is it located? I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a basic package, (nothing fancy). 6 Cylinder engine. Rich
From a battery longevity standpoint it is a smart idea to put it inside . This keeps the battery from the extreme heat and cold of the engine compartment environment . From a maintenance do it yourself perspective it is a PIA specially now on the V6 models which have "2" batteries in that small space now thanks to the useless stop/start feature on the V6's ....
Went to the jeep dealer cause my navigation needs to be updated and was told that i need a new battery,i asked how much and they said $350 ! Cause if i get it installed somewhere else the check engine light would come on! I don't know if that's true or not,but my 2015 jeep grand cherokee limited has 70k miles and the battery is fine! Dealerships are vultures!
If I ever tried this, leaving those 2 flanged nuts lying loose in the way like he did, the nuts would go flying somewhere, never ever to be found. I just took delivery of a 2018 G.C. this week. I'm wondering now whether I should make it a habit to switch off the automatic stop/start in order to lengthen the battery life.
If your battery is dead use jumper terminals under hood with other or the new battery to move seat having battery under seat gives longer life to battery in extreme heat and cold up two years more remember if you have stop start or on. Board computer memory system in new Jeep use batteries savor system or jumper cables to a turned off additional vehicle battery before and while charging battery 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing your very helpful video. My vehicle is a Dodge Durango with same battery set up, and unfortunately there aren't as many helpful videos on how to change the battery
SUGGEGTION: WAIT TO PLACE THE BRAKET BACK IN, UNTIL AFTER YOU HOOK UP THE POSITIVE TERMINAL, SO THAT, YOU CAN REACH IT EASIER, BY SLIDING THE BETTERY BACK A COUPLE OF INCHES
My jeep is a 2011 and has over 95k miles on it and this is the first time I have had to switch out the battery. So in my case the original battery lasted 95k miles and 6.5 years.

I kind of thought that might be the case but... if one doesn't ask and verify one might create more issues. I really appreciate the response!! Very cool!
Thanks for the video. If you want some extra juice, you can buy (or modify the existing)
diesel model battery bracket and then fit the bigger 95A / CCA 850 AGM battery. Standard size 353x175x190 mm - +. They are like 150$
I had to cut mine with my Dremel to make the larger battery fit
I changed batteries in my Jeep Cherokee 5.7 limited 2006 in doing so my door speakers no longer work, the dash speakers work but not the door or rear speakers!!!!any eyedear what’s happening
Richard, sorry but i do not have any experience with the previous generation of jeep grand cherokee....Good luck in your search for an answer!
So what if the battery's totally dead? How do u move the Seat up?
PUT A BOOST CABLE UNDER YOUR HOOD AND THEN MOVE THE SEAT
Thank you for taking the time to do this video!
You're welcome!
Is there a battery under the hood?
For us non LHD is the battery in the same place ? ie under the DRIVERS seat in our case ? I would assume it would be.. Cheers
Good hint. ALWAYS. Start engine, and ensure proper vehicle operation prior to installing the final access cover and the seat. Long way to go, I guess in this case it worked out if the seat didn’t work then that would be a good clue that something was either loose or not connected at all. I would start and make sure no stray sparks before installing the access cover.
How do you change the battery if the one in the truck has no power and you can't move the electric seat forward or backward?
Jumper cables on the connectors under the hood to restore power. Should use a auxiliary power source whenever replacing battery.
Mine went dead too. I charged it enough to start with the correct battery charger set to AGM mode then drove it to the local chain type auto parts store and they changed it out free.
What do you do if the battery is dead and can't jump start to move the seat?
Just unbolt the seat from the floor.
What if the battery is dead and your not able to use the seat controls?
@@Krommehoek you can just unbolt the seat from the floor.
On the dashboard of my 2014 cherokee it has a low battery message I changed the battery for a new one but it still has the message. Could it be that the problem was not the battery?
does it change the settings on the programming when you dont supply alternate power while battery is out does the engine have to relearn driving habits thanks
it resets everything if you don't supply alternate power.
How can you move the seat forward to access the battery if the battery is already completely dead?
Gelo_ 702 In that case you would probably have to unbolt the seat from the floor.
Gelo_ 702 or alternatively maybe you can use the jumper points under the hood to get enough juice to at least move the seat forward and out of the way.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, unfortunately, no donor vehicle for a jump. I removed the seat. It wasn't too bad - just the 4 bolts. Thanks again
You could use jumper cables from the new battery to the under the hood jumper points
Thank you very much, Bro
😊😊😊😊😊❤ great video -easy to follow. Helpful that he gives you the size of the sockets needed.
COYI under which seat for the uk model ?
Hi, Thanks for that. Someone said that my problem may be an "SLI battery". When I push the starter button, nothing happens and the interior lights don't come on when the door is open. Yet I can start it if I use a jumper... What is an SLI Battery and where is it located? I have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a basic package, (nothing fancy). 6 Cylinder engine.
Rich
What do you do if down the line the passenger seat motor is bad then the battery dies?
At that point you would probably need to unbolt the passenger seat from the floor
Thank you for this video. Made changing the battery in my Jeep so much easier.
You’re welcome! Glad it helped.
Great vid, the silver lining is that both 658C and 658 AGM will be best for your JGC depending on year model🔌👍🏽
From a battery longevity standpoint it is a smart idea to put it inside . This keeps the battery from the extreme heat and cold of the engine compartment environment . From a maintenance do it yourself perspective it is a PIA specially now on the V6 models which have "2" batteries in that small space now thanks to the useless stop/start feature on the V6's ....
thanks for the video i thought i may have to remove the seat to change the battery
If the battery is dead how do you move the seat?
Unbolt it from the floor.
Thank you for this video.
You gave great directions!!!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for sharing your very helpful video. My vehicle is a Dodge Durango with same battery set up, and unfortunately there aren't as many helpful videos on how to change the battery
Thanks for your kind words. Good to know this also works for the Durango!
The Durango and Jeep are the same vehicle . The Durango is just on a extend chassis .
I could be wrong but how would you get the seat forward if the battery dies on you to even get a jumpstart?
There are remote positive and negative terminals under the hood so you can jump it.
Thanks, watched the video and swapped the battery out in 15 minutes..
SUGGEGTION: WAIT TO PLACE THE BRAKET BACK IN, UNTIL AFTER YOU HOOK UP THE POSITIVE TERMINAL, SO THAT, YOU CAN REACH IT EASIER, BY SLIDING THE BETTERY BACK A COUPLE OF INCHES
good idea but is the positive cable flexible enough?
Great video, very helpful, thank you. I wonder how these engineers got their Diplomas/Degrees!!!!!.
I am
Memory saver ???
This really helpful to me. Thanks.
Thanks for the tutorial. You saved me a couple hundred dollars!
You're welcome!
Thanks for uploading. How often do you swap out your battery?
My jeep is a 2011 and has over 95k miles on it and this is the first time I have had to switch out the battery. So in my case the original battery lasted 95k miles and 6.5 years.
Thanks for adding. I dedinitely need a longer extension to finish the job, don't have enough room in the hole to get more than one click per turn.
My 2012 is still going strong at 103K miles going on just over 6 years.
DonKeyFaRT agreed. Still on my original front brakes. Just changed the rear.
@@OvertakeVideo why i read everywhere that jeeps are unreliable and there is problems with the transmission?
I want one but I'm afraid to get one
Great video 👍 how do you move seat if battery is completely dead?
Worst case you can unbolt the seat from the floor. You might also be able to get it to hold enough charge to just put the seat forward.
jump.start the car, then can move seats ... Else it's expensive in garage for manual removal of seat .....
@@OvertakeVideo F.Y.I. Under the hood on passenger side near windshield is two posts used to "jump start" or power the vehicle when the battery is depleted.
Thank you! Very easy to follow!
Excellent. I wondered how to get the battery out...
Reading the Owners Manual, may be of some help....
@@edski7747 My owners manual had absolutely nothing on battery replacement, or the jumping point under the hood. Thank goodness for TH-cam videos like this.
Thanks for the vid , My battery cost just over $365.00 Canadian . For starters i looked under the hood for at least a 5 min. in search mode for the battery , and yes i had to look up on line to >>>> where the hell is the battery for my Jeep Grand , i agree with you built460 , what stuuuupid place for a battery .
A super Start 94r is under 200 idk what you bought but that’s expensive
Great vid. I wish you didnt need the socket extension. I'm still screwed lol
Just completed mine with out the extension it was a PAIN only had a deep socket...but great video nonetheless
great video however i did not find any money - u saved me time and money u rock
Somebody could tell me what type of battery is used for Gran Cherokee Overland 3.6L V6 Nafta (Gasoline i think you say). I'm from Argentina, is for my father.
Did you use a memory saver?
I did not, and did not have any issues.
Excellent overview and instruction. Thank you very much for filming and posting.
did you have any issues with your radio or key working?
Causeof Gehenna thanks for your comment! No I had no issues at all.
I was worried I might need to use an alternative power source while I did it. But if you didn't use one, you saved me a couple hundred bucks! thank you :)
Thank you! Great video! Very helpful!!!
You’re welcome!
Perfect video. It was easy to follow. Thanks 🙂
Good job. Did you forget the memory saver?
Waylon DeSilva it was not needed for me-I had no issues - I think there is a time limit -from what others have told me as long as you don’t leave the battery disconnected more than a few minutes you are fine.
@@OvertakeVideo Hi overtake, do you know if anything bad can happen if I don’t use a memory saver and I pass the time limit?
How long does these AGM batteries last before it needs to be change?
2016 models have an auxiliary battery, so yes, 2 batteries under the seat. The seat needs to be removed. Not a big deal 4 15mm bolts and unplug the seat belt sensor plug and bam !! Easy access. Lol
I just had mine changed today Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland …. Now the climate control will not turn on … do you know what I can do ? There is no dealership in my hometown … is there a way I can fix the problem without a Jeep dealership
What if you have the base model with manual seats?
Bru Dog you should just use the manual adjusters to move the seat as far forward as possible.
Just watched easy to follow perfect instructions
Thank you! Glad it helped.
Has anyone used a memory saver when changing the battery and if so, which one? and of course, was it successful?
I didn't and had no problem. But after reading about an anti-theft code for the radio, maybe I should have.
How can I move the seat, if the battery is completely dead?
Try jumper cables connected to another car.
My 2015 Laredo has a manual passenger seat, don’t have to worry about a dead battery not moving the seat forward. Dealer just called and said 430 bucks for a new battery and install...I said pfft no thanks, I’m going to O O O O’Reilly’s auto parts
