Yes! Finally KWS! He's the guy with the blond hair. Listen to his song "Shame, Shame Shame" KWS tells a story of being a child and attending SRV concert. SRV sat him up on a speaker to watch the show. He has mad skills. I've been to both SRV and KWS concerts. His concerts are great.
His father, Ken "Shotgun" Sheppard, was the MC for the Labor Day '84 concert in Shreveport. Dad brought him on stage and sat him on speakers stage right. I remember some of that day.
I was in my 20s in the mid 90s and worked at a rent-to-own store, and we had a company video to play on the tv's in the showroom. They had Born With a Broken Heart on it, and I have been hooked since! I also, have seen both he and SRV live! SRV is still my favorite, but KWS is an amazing guitarist. Sadly, outside of SRV, blues and blues rock get fewer hits than a lot of other musical genres, so there isn't a lot of reaction videos. I hope this changes!
Whats beautiful about music is that every single person can interpret the lyrics differently and thats really great , but what makes the music and lyrics unforgettable is when the artist can take them and make you feel them deep in your soul. Thats talent.
KWS!!! I am forever grateful and humbled by he and his band’s kindness. They came to Jonesboro, AR in ‘98 after the Westside school shooting; (the school I went to). They came and put on a great show for FREE to help us have a moment of relaxed normalcy. Something we did not have much of, if any, during that time. I will always love KWS! So much soul!
Since it took me a while to get this myself, I'll elaborate with my own understanding: It's like you tried to write with blue ink on a black piece of paper. You're not going to see it; it doesn't make a difference.
To explain the depth of the song a bit better. I think KWS' description from an interview best sums it up. "...a whole list of things that don’t amount to an effect when you put one against the other. Cold to ice. It’s not changing anything. A tear into a river is not elevating the level of the water significantly. And adding blue to black- the black consumes the blue.”
In an August 2017 interview, Shepherd discussed the song's origins: We wrote that when we were down in New Orleans - me, Mark and Tia. I had the music, and Mark and I were just rolling with the music and tried to develop things up. Tia came up with this idea based on a shirt that I was wearing that was blue and black. She noticed the two colors that were dominant on my shirt, and if you mix those two colors together, black consumes the blue. It doesn't amount to anything if you put the two together: You still have one color, instead of creating a new color. So she built on that idea, and it became this really deep song. It's really up to the listener to determine how they apply it. So many people have applied it to a death in the family, an abusive relationship, a broken relationship, or whatever. There are so many different ways. That's what's beautiful about music and lyrics is trying to write a song that the listener can apply to their own experience in whatever way seems fit. And that's one of those songs. Written by Shepherd with Mark Selby and Tia Sellers
Kenny Wayne wasn't even a legal adult when he wrote that. It's rare but sometimes people with that kind of natural ability are born. Some never get the chance to realize their potential. The lyrics still work for different reasons too. Five Finger Death Punch covered it with Kenny Wayne and it takes on a whole different meaning. Thanks for reacting to it.
"Truth, lies and in-between" thats the line I relate to. Had a woman who was an expert at weaving them together. I'm a black and white kinda person, and she was a grey expert
Man KWS was huge in the mid and late 90s. Absolutely a towering figure in the guitar scene. He was a guitar prodigy. Someone who was just a teenager but brought visions of SRV when you heard him play. The sky seemed the limit for the kid and the absolute universe of expectations that was thrust upon his shoulders is insane. He still has the longest-running #1 album on the blues charts (the one with this song on it). He's had a good career.
That tone! He and Johnny Lang were dismissed in the mainstream as SRV knockoffs but have found great places as Blues guitarists. The recording companies pushed them out this way and they have both found their sound, especially KWS. Kick a** player. You need to jam on to some Joe Bonamassa next.
Me and a friend of mine went to Bunkers in downtown Minneapolis around '96 and seen this band with some guitarist that looked like he was 15. We were pretty amazed by it. He was Johnny Lang.
Stevie ray got Kenny started in learning to play. There’s a utube interview where Kenny talks about meeting Stevie at his fathers concert venue and Vaughn spending time showing him basic licks.
@@mikesutliff9142 My stepdad worked security a few years at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival here in MD, I got to go in '99 and saw Jonny Lang along with John Lee Hooker, Wilson Picket and a bunch of others, as a 15 y/o at the time most of my friends were rock or hip hop heads and didn't understand how I had a blast there.
Kenny came to my town when my oldest son was a budding blues guitarist and I took him to see Kenny at a local club, twice in fact. Because I was friends with the club owner we went early while the stage and equipment were being set up. My son went back stage and ended up hanging out on Kenny's tour bus and playing video games with him til time for the show. Tapped on this immediately when I saw it. Yes, Kenny Wayne Shepherd is the blond lead guitarist, and Noah Hunt is the rhythm guitarist and lead singer. I saw these guys as an opening act back in the Summer of '97 at The Jones Beach Amphitheater in Wantaugh NY, and will be seeing them here in Orlando FL on Friday, January 28th, 2022 as the headliner. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is one of the greatest blues guitarist who has ever lived. He was a child prodigy. He's amazing. I would highly recommend you watching one of the lyric videos as it contains the full-length 5 1/2 minute long album version. There's way more of Kenny's crying guitar licks in there. It's a masterpiece.
I've been a KWS fan since I saw him play at the House of Blues in New Orleans when he was 16 years old. It was readily apparent he was blessed with talent.
We saw Kenny Wayne Shepherd open on a big blues tour in 1992. Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Doctor John, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds were on the bill too, and KWS stood shoulder to shoulder with all of them, even as a kid. My first real date with my wife of 29 years. So you know it had to be a helluva show!
I saw KWS years ago, at the time I had never heard of him. He was on the bill with BTO and others. I had front row center seats. I was blown away by him and his band. Went right out and bought his CD!
That's how so many of us discovered him. He was doing a concert in Tama, Iowa must have been over 20 years ago and was the opening act for B.B. King. I'll never say that King isn't the King...but man KWS stole that show from the opening!
Kenny is the blonde guy who can blister a Stratocaster! He is so young in this video, as I saw him at an outdoor concert in Dallas in 1998 and he was spectacular!
Absolutely love this song. Reminds me of an old love….BTW Kenny is the blond. He was like 18 or around there when this came out. Teenage guitar virtuoso !
Was jamming to this a few months back. My 5 year old daughter was asleep on our way back from the grocery store. A month ago, we were running errands and she asked me to play the song, “boos on berack. 🤣That girl loves this song. 😎
Awesome! About time someone does some Kenny Wayne. He was a teenager when they cut this album. He plays guitar and is not the singer. There were a couple teens that put out some great music back then. You also need to give a listen to another kid at the time named Johnny Lang. He played guitar and sang. 2:22 Loved how you pulled your hand back when you heard that guitar. Teaser for later. Seen them live. You don't really hear Kenny's whispering guitar....till it screams.
One of my favorite albums Trouble Is… when it came out. Queued up, I Found Love, for my girlfriend and left flowers while away. She came home, found my note, the flowers and hit play. Kenny helped seal the deal, married for over twenty years.
KWS is one the great modern blues/rock guitarists...completely self taught. There is information out there that Stevie Ray Vaughn sat him on top of one of his amps to watch the concert when he was 6 or 7 years old (Kenny's dad took him). Shortly after that he started to play and learn guitar. He wrote this song when he was a teenager...from the album "Trouble Is" The dark haired guy is Noah Hunt. Thanks for taking a look at one of the greats!
We used to have a Blues bar in my town. For some reason they started bringing in rock bands and they lost their soul. Bar just kept going downhill from there. I miss live Blues.
Brings me back to the late 90s when classic rock radio was playing this song despite it being brand new LOL Check out his song Deja Voodoo. My favorite from him.
The musical collaboration of this song is crossover between Memphis blues and rock. Everything that the song refers to is a loss of something that you can’t get back. Spending you life trying to regain that loss is like wasted time… the small gets lost in the big, loss is going to happen in life. It’s moving forward that is the hardest part of loss. Every lyric in this song such as a match on a fire and tears in a river. What seems like something big happening to you when put into perspective by looking at the bigger picture, one realizes things are going to happen, some we can control, most we can’t. Deal with it, move on because in the grand scheme of things, your big thing is really finite when viewed the larger perspective.
A good friend of mine had a stroke 4 years ago and hasn't walked since but the weekend before she came to our house and wanted to hear this song. My husband put it on for her and she just danced and danced. Thank you for this
Noah Hunt is the vocalist, always has been Kenny's singer, very unmentioned great vocalists, loved this song and band since day one. Kenny the long haired young guy on the electric guitar. 2 THINGS ABOUT THIS SONG, the entire band was formally Stevie Ray Vaughn's, Double Trouble, prior to his death and KWS was only 19 when this recorded
Check out Jonny Lang! Another young songwriter blues guitarist. He's got a lot of great ones. Breakin' Me, Lie To Me, Still Rainin' -- too many to name.
I live in the MIdwest...eastern Iowa: cornfields. My graduating class was literally 60 people on the dot. And we used to just cruise the back roads in beat up cars to this album. It was one of those albums that got played on hard rock, alternative, and country stations. React to some more! You'll love the songs! Thanks for reacting to it, man! We all appreciate it!
Yay! KWS hometown boy shout out from your sister city Bossier City, La! Kenny Wayne Shepherd is the blonde guy. He was a child guitar prodigy and grew up right across the River from where I live in Shreveport Louisiana! He’s amazing and I love to see more of the great talent that came from right here in Louisiana! ❤️❤️
As amazing as KWS is as a guitarist, the thing I always enjoy about this period of his music is the vocals by Noah Hunt, who just has a great voice for Rock n Roll/Blues songs. Please try a track called Where Was I? off his 1999 album Live On... it's also fantastic
Well, you know which one he is now - very blues oriented player, self taught by ear since age 7 when he met SRV at one the concerts his father promoted.
Love this tune!! When this came out Jamel, they thought Kenny Wayne was gonna be the next Stevie Ray. Obviously, that did not happen but he is one talented guitarist and songwriter. You already know KWS is the blonde haired guy playing the Strat. Keep doing what you do, my brother!! And as always Blessings from Texas!!
Kenny Wayne was my brother-in-law's best friend back in school. After he made it big and left, he came back and picked my brother-in-law up in a limo for a night on the town (Shreveport/Bossier). Ofcourse people grow apart over time and life takes us down different paths. They never got reacquainted after that. I just thought that was cool as hell though!
I grew up in Shreveport and had mutual friends with KWS in high school, multiple occasions he would be playing acoustic at house parties. His dad was everyone’s favorite morning DJ, Shotgun Ken Sheppard in the morning on Tux 99
Kenny Wayne has many albums under his belt. Been playing since he was about 14 I'm thinking. Add Noah Hunt with those killer vocals and what a combo! One of the latest albums The Traveler is well worth a listen.
Great tune, lyrics and guitar playing! Excellent song. Jamel you should also check out Jonny Lang specifically the song: Lie to Me, lyrically it's in this vain..... and man what an amazing blues guitarist from a very early age. He was a teenager when he was discovered! And actually any song of of the Lie to Me album is excellent!! Thanks for finally checking out KWS. Great job love your channel.
He is from NW Louisiana where I live. Got his start as a kid while his dad was the morning DJ for 98.9 in Shreveport. He is married to Mel Gibson's daughter
At about 7 years old Kenny Wayne Shepherd, courtesy of his father who was a radio personality and concert promoter, he got to do a Meet and Greet with the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn who would be his inspiration to play guitar. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is self taught and does not read music. Love this band!!! Thanks Jamel!!!~APRIL LIPKE
He is great in concert! We got to see him at a small venue in Wausau, WI. Mad guitar skills. More blues, please! Robert Cray, Strong Persuader. Or modern blues, Leon Bridges, Bad, Bad News, or Smooth Sailin’.
I was lucky enough to attend a G3 concert (guitar x 3), at the Shoreline Amphitheater, up here in Mt. View, Ca. The main 3 were JOE SATRIANI, STEVE VAI, AND YNGWIE MALMSTEEN. As if three guitar gods weren't enough, Kenny Wayne Sheppard was the opening act. When he joined them onstage for the epic G3 jam, there was another surprise guest; Neil Schon, lead guitarist for Journey. It was EPIC.
KWS is great. You can listen to any of his music and I'll be here. Give Deja Voodoo and Born With A Broken Heart a try next time around. Seriously, he pretty awesome.
Me and my wife have had hours of conversations on this song. My opinion, and strictly my opinion: It’s things that don’t change the situation. A black wall doesn’t change with blue paint. A tear doesn’t change a river. And me wanting you back doesn’t change your leaving. Love love your channel, where’s the best place to leave a request?
Great reaction. Always loved this song. There's a great version out there from two of the Shinedown guys, with Kenny. Look for Smith & Myers - Blue on Black.
Kenny Wayne is playing the Strat and the other guitar player, playing the acoustic sings this song. I stand corrected sir. I've seen him a few times. Dude always brings it live.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang were both considered young versions of SRV back in the 90's. You'd also love Gary Clarke Jr. He did an amazing cover of Come Together by The Beatles.

"Shotgun" Sheppard, KWS dad, was MC for concert and sat the very young KWS on speaker while did his job.
Saw him in concert. Live is a must for him as with most Blues players.
We used to have a Blues bar in my town. For some reason they started bringing in rock bands and they lost their soul. Bar just kept going downhill from there. I miss live Blues.
@@TreeFreak Yeah, I do too. I am hoping that the Eastern Iowa Blue Association will start their Blues Festivals again next year.
He can certainly put out a vibe that makes you want more. LOVE this song, one of my favorites!! Great reaction!!
Brings me back to the late 90s when classic rock radio was playing this song despite it being brand new LOL
Check out his song Deja Voodoo. My favorite from him.
Oh, man! I forgot Deja Voodoo. That chorus riff!
Yes, especially Lie to Me and Still Raining.
Jonny Lang a great artist. Saw him B.C . Before Covid at the Casino at Hampton beach
Vocalist is Noah Hunt. Old soul in a very young man at the time of this.
Very true.
Oh, I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. I immediately bought the CD. Kenny is the blond and a guitar prodigy.
This is still my favorite 90s blues-rock track. That solo is fire, too!
Kenny has a great DVD where he travels around playing with old time blues players, some just local legends.
One of my all-time favorites! So great to see you watching this!
Kenny Wayne Shepherd was only 16yrs old when he released this
Wrong. He was 19.
He's the blond! His song Alive is awesome too! Actually found out awhile back, he's married to Actor Mel Gibson's daughter.
As amazing as KWS is as a guitarist, the thing I always enjoy about this period of his music is the vocals by Noah Hunt, who just has a great voice for Rock n Roll/Blues songs. Please try a track called Where Was I? off his 1999 album Live On... it's also fantastic
There’s not a bad track on that album, or any of the first 3 albums
Kenny Wane is the blonde haired dude playing the guitar.
More Kenny Wane Shepard please! He is one sick guitar player! Great guy too!
Well, you know which one he is now - very blues oriented player, self taught by ear since age 7 when he met SRV at one the concerts his father promoted.
I work Security at a Shepard concert when he was 17 or so, insane talent.
Wow. So much soul from such a young man.
Make good decisions people, some things you can’t take back. One of my fave songs ever.
Been waiting for this one for a long, LONG time. One of the only reasons 1997-1998 was livable...Thank-you.
Kenny Wayne has many albums under his belt. Been playing since he was about 14 I'm thinking. Add Noah Hunt with those killer vocals and what a combo! One of the latest albums The Traveler is well worth a listen.
And that sound Kenny gets with his guitar is his use of the Octavio which Jimi used on Purple Haze, Fire, and others. Great song!
Shotgun Ken Shepherd in the morning on TUX 99!
Check out the live version. The guitar solo is so good the crowd cheers after it.
Love KWS but lol, blues fans cheer after EVERY solo
Love Robert Cray and Leon Bridges. I’ll have to give the others a listen
One of my favs. Noah's voice is amazing.
KWS is a great guitarist but I’m more impressed with Noah Hunt’s voice…Amazing💙🖤
Noah is a great guy and what a voice. Have known him for years and seen him play locally around Cincinnati
That voice!!!! This album was overlooked and underrated.....kws is great but the vocals take me all the way!!!
@@kristapendergrassguardascione you should see him with Scotty Bratcher and the 420 All Stars… gooooood stuff
Saw him at Rockerfellers In Houston when he was 16. Band was called Sunsets Heights.
He opened for Johnny Winter.
Five Finger Death Punch covered this with help from Kenny, Brantley Gilbert, and Queen's Brian May.
Yes!!!!! Much better!
It's amazing also
YESSSSS!!
@@marierosemary3768 I wouldn’t say better, just heavier.
I'm going to disagree on the cover being better. FFDP is generic "metal" and added nothing of value to the song.
One, of many songs awaiting me back home, from the first 4 years, of 8.
Saw KWS open for Van Halen in 2015. He’s ridiculously talented 🎸
In the documentary "10 Days Out" he pays tribute to & performs with forgotten blues masters. Many have since passed.
Noah, playing acoustic, is the primary singer. Kenny is playing the strat
I have to say, I adore your scrinchie face with the guitar solo. Thank you so much for reacting to KWG.
Me and my wife have had hours of conversations on this song. My opinion, and strictly my opinion:
It’s things that don’t change the situation. A black wall doesn’t change with blue paint. A tear doesn’t change a river. And me wanting you back doesn’t change your leaving.
Love love your channel, where’s the best place to leave a request?
Mad respect for holding off the pause when he heard that guitar!
Great reaction. Always loved this song. There's a great version out there from two of the Shinedown guys, with Kenny. Look for Smith & Myers - Blue on Black.
Noah Hunt (guy with dark hair) is the main singer for KWS band.
There’s a version done with the lead singer from Five Finger Death Punch that’s really good as well.
Total agree
Lots of great names in that video!
Kenny got the Name of the Song from the long sleeved plaid blue & black shirt he was wearing when he 1st wrote it. TRUTH!~
Kenny Wayne is playing the Strat and the other guitar player, playing the acoustic sings this song. I stand corrected sir.
I've seen him a few times. Dude always brings it live.
I thought someone else did the vocals.
@@brigitte9999 I stand corrected. The other guitar player, playing acoustic sings. Good catch.
Noah Hunt on vocals.
17 yr old KWS. This song I never get tired of, probably my favorite song on all time.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang were both considered young versions of SRV back in the 90's. You'd also love Gary Clarke Jr. He did an amazing cover of Come Together by The Beatles.
Yeah I'm really glad you mentioned Johnny Lang I forgotten all about him thank you
Love Johnny Lang too!! Gary Clark Jr. is amazing!! 😊💓✌️
Johnny Lang's "Breakin' Me" should get a reaction video. Kid was 17 or 18 when he recorded it and sounds like a 50-something year old, black bluesman.
@@scottbaron121 Exactly, he is amazing!!
Yes I heard this on the radio didn't know the name couldn't find it until now thank you I love this song
Appreciate you brother
Kenny Wayne Sheppard is from Shreveport, Louisiana.
Love this song! If you like this check out the band Days of the New and their song Touch, Peel and Stand.
Now you have to do Arc Angels - Sent By Angels. These guys were Stevie Ray Vaughan backing band and after his death did the Arc Angels album
“Which one is Kenny Wayne” lmao I don’t know either but you had me rolling dude
Kenny is the blonde guitarist 😬
Probably one of my favorite 90s rock songs.
