That's so awesome--often wonder if these reaction vids are seen by the artists. I grew up in the same part of H-town as Billy and Dusty--went to the same high school 16 years after them. Knew where their first studio was. My first boyfriend's older brother went to school with them and had the Cadillac featured in "Mexican Blackbird" ...HOMETOWN BOYS! ...There was this other episode when I was 14, they were majorly famous, and Dusty was visiting his mom and I was biking to my friends and when I jumped off my bike to walk in the complex and saw him (and was like WHOA!) and he asked if I knew where to get some coke. LOL. I did NOT unfortunately, as that ended the convo ;-)

I just love the way Jamel appreciates great music. His reactions are honest and it gives me hope that maybe others in the younger generation will not let the music from our past die. I want to see him do some early 60's Motown songs...the 4 tops, the Supremes, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, etc. When I was a kid in the 60's, I loved all great music and did not care about the skin color of who was making it. I am in my 60's now and still feel the same way.

You did a fantastic job reacting to this song. You really understaood the music. Most reviewers stop the song ten times somehow right when it is crescendo-ing, and there was one spot where it would have been very appropriate to pause and reflect on what had happened, and you almost did stop, but that part of the song is at the peak of the arc and was all a setup for what was about to drop, and you sensed that and instead of pausing you instinctively kept listening which maximized the impact and momentum of the song, and I don't even think you stopped until the end.
It was a very astute observation you made about the difference between hearing this song, and watching the video, the mind gets distracted by the video, and the song doesnt hit as hard. This music is from an era when everything was ALL about the music, most albums didnt even have a picture of the band, they had some artwork on the cover. So when you allow yourself to simply listen to music from and before this era, it hits so hard.
Another similar experience is listen to the the cuts in an album, in order. The entire album is a composition, and it allows a much deeper study of the artist. Like going in to a gallery with one painting from an artist, or many, and you can see the development and exploration of themes. There is nothing wrong with kids putting the devices on random shuffle and experiencing music that way, just set aside a good amount of time to do deep dives in to your favorite artists albums. Back then music was always experienced that way, purely listening, and starting with the first track on an album, and ending with the last until it hit the run out and looped with the crackles, or picked up the arm and clicked off. Even those sounds were part of the experience.

I've seen Metallica, REM, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffet, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels and others live, and they were good, but ZZ Top was the best concert I've ever been to. Definitely the best seats I ever had. My buddy and I swapped our nosebleeds and cash for 13th row center. They played a bunch of songs off the album they were touring to support (Recycler), but then got into a greatest hits / greatest B-side blues fest. Amidst the standing, cheering, swaying floor crowd, Rob and I looked at each other like "what are we doing?," and 5 seconds later there we were, sitting down, feet kicked up, just getting soaked in unfiltered ZZ Top blues greatness.

Lots of rap and hop fans are ignorant of the progression of music because they think if it's old it's dumb. And that just ain't so. I can give you a musical history progression that'll get you from Buddy Holly to Kanye West, with stops by Johnny Cash and Sex Pistols in addition to the people you expect [Chuck Berry, Isaac Hayes, etc.]. And watching Jamal explore that progression one song at a time is an awful lot of fun.
