Don't scare the fishes off!" 19:08 "Don't be scared! I won't hurt you." "The waters here are soothing."
@@kv-2537 No. The markings were each representing a character in a square-ish block each. I counted each block in each "word" and drew a type of Hang Man dashed grid. Then noticed the ones repeating most and did some substitution of common vowels like "E" or "O" and just pieced it together by cross referencing each of the 3 sentences at those 3 time stamps I posted when he spoke to the Shadow Cat.
Mandatory theory comment: I think this is about a driving accident. 1st course doesn't give us much aside from the crashed car and child's drawing, but I think of it as the inciting incedent. You can't make the counter go up no matter how many laps you drive, doesn't it make you want to *break away*? You only progress by *breaking the rules*. 2 and 3 are similar in that they show affected people. 2 shows us a girl afraid to be on the same level as us, brushing it off as just mud she's freaked out by despite us never getting mud on us. The bunny on route 3 is clearly a victim. They say they can't feel anything, but once the world goes wonky, he's lying prone and only repeating that he feels something. Route 4 is. Obvious. Corpses lying prone, screaming, drawing implies the corpse is the kid's friend, the works. Room 5 is similar. You have to hit balloons except some are blood filled and induce screaming children. What's interesting is the character there, who isn't supposed to be there and when she says she's not ready to wake up, she explodes like a balloon. Our character also explodes like a balloon. A symbol of death maybe. Then we have route 6. A partially submerged road. No one else, just us and a faceless cat. I think the cat is a representation of us, or how we see ourselves after the accident; Faceless, incomprehensible, and as the translation implies, scary. And they see us in a similar light as we're scaring the fish. Then route 7. The scene of the crime according to the teeth pile. We're murdered by our victim (the teeth in the pile likely belong to the monster by the flashing images) and we're just left with "Congratulations: You Won the Game!" As if the game is saying "You didn't have to do this, but you did! You caused so much death! Are you proud of yourself?" At least that's my interpretation lol.
I feel like you're on the right track! Maybe the white cat is either who caused the accident (looks scary because of it), or the victim (as if a memory with regret)
There's definitely a story being told here. I'm just not sure what exactly. Lap counter staying at 1 is probably related to the ending where we die right before crossing the line. The area at 21:00 is a parking garage, by the way. That's how some city parking garages are designed. I don't know how descending a parking garage fits into the story. Are the drawings a part of the story, or are they just helpful hints? Was there a child who drew these? The mud level has towers of mud pooling in from above... Is this a part of the story? Mud filling up a space and trying to drown you? Or am I reading too much into this 6:08 she says why are you "still" down there. What does she mean by this? She's been waiting for us to get out of the mud? "There's no way I'm letting you up here" If she wants us to get out of the mud why is she concerned about getting mud on her? 7:10 "Are deserts supposed to be hot?" Why is this character so surprised that a desert is hot? 11:24 "I'm not supposed to be here" "I'm not ready to wake up" ... These lines sound important but I don't know how.
@@daminox Maybe the girl is an cats relative in a sense and the mud symbolizes crime. She doesnt want to be associated with him because He killed or very badly injured a person. But still cares about the cat as says her voice lines.
Subtext seems to lead to this definitely, but I also think it happened at a birthday party given the balloon popping metaphor, the amount of bodies in the level previous to that, and the sound of the cat dying and child crying.
The ending kind of gives me the sense that the game is in a sort demo state as of now because of how the death feels like something that would be used in a prologue chapter before the real adventure begins. Something that goes like, the player's best friend suddenly disappeared one day and they get the game from their friends parents, only to find that they have to make a character instead of playing as the title cat character. The beginning of the journey then leads to a fork in the road where the player is given the choice to not get involved and play a simple kart racing game or go deeper in order to find out what happened to their friend and slowly uncover an ancient evil spirit or something like that.
did you know the music in the shi- i mean... "chocolate" falls level (level 2) is whats called a shepherds tone, an auditory illusion that sounds like its going down infinitely but its actually not... shepherds tones often cause psychological distress in most people if listened to for long enough
Never heard of a sheperd's tone before, ya know where that came from or have other examples? Tbh I've seen this game played twice and almost completely tuned all of the sounds out, music included, both times so I didn't notice any auditory trick like that but I can believe they probably exist, maybe the commentary and excessive jumping sounds on this playthrough just broke that effect
@@morgantodd3748 Ya they missed on that. Put that warning as the very first screen on game open with a game like this, not in the middle of the game proper. The N64 era didn't have seizure warnings.
first one of these "n64" style games that actually kinda gets the style right (a lot are just low res and that's it), i appreciate that pretty much everything is a billboard sprite like you would have seen on the actual system, and the texturing on the actual 3d objects is clear, with very sparse use of 3d only where it's needed. (because that's what the system was good at, poly budget was insanely small but it could do a lot with 2d images and unlit textures on objects)
My goodness! The style and graphics are just on point! Even though it's obviously a horror game, it's enough to have me wondering what this world would be like if it wasn't horror. As another comment said, id you told me this was some limited edition content for MK64, I would've believed you.
I gotta agree. The prerendered sprites, the framerate, the environments, the title screen visuals "with the wiggling 64)... These features don't hold consistently though- a lot of this starts getting too many polygons and too high a resolution really quick, but that first bit is definitely enough to even ease in folks who grew up with an N64. (unlike a lot of other games like this) It looks like this was a game jam game? So, I gi e them a lot of grace for that. Can't wait to see what they make next.
i love the Style of this, i just wish it leaned into the kart gimmick a little more like it doesn't feel like a horror racing game, it feels like a kind of typical "walking in spooky environments and collecting vague lore" game where your sprite happens to be in a car
yeah, it was strange to have such large worlds that had nothing in them. i think the mud world was the only one he even used the jump mechanics on. Why even use a race aesthetic if youre not going to run or chase? i had hoped at one point that the lights would turn off and youd have to use the carts headlight.
I have to say, I adore the presentation of the flooded highway interchange. It's just got such a vibe to it, ya know? Like it's obviously a bit creepy, but also feels rather appropriate for the game type it's trying to emulate. Just interesting all around. Feels like the kinda thing you'd read a couple of mid mid-2000s creepypasta about.
When you're driving to your mimi's house but accidentally fall off the world and end up in the poo dimension, hate when that happens, such an inconvenience
not only are the VISUALS extremely faithful to mario kart 64, (even the little "bounce" that happens everytime you drift is straight from the game!) but also the gameplay! mario kart 64 is the only installment in the series where you can actually go offroad exploring areas such as peaches castle from mario kart 64! obviously you can go offroad in other mario kart games, but in other games there's not really many places to go other than the racetrack. so cool!! i can tell the developers really care alot about mk64 :D
okay wow the modeling and gameplay really reminds me of when i would play mario kart on my dsi… i knew of maybe 2 secret paths that would help you get ahead in the race … but the emptiness is already setting and eerie tone and then the cart crashed and the drawing… haunted game maybe?
I'll let you all in on some deep Manly lore: if you want to rattle his cage just give him a racing game with no other players and no feedback on if he's even going the right way. Works every time.
I remember as a kid I had a digimon racing game for the gameboy advance, and for the timer races I love exploring off the race map and see how far I could go before hitting the invisible wall. Finally seeing a horror adaptation for this exploration
i can see where the room with all the balloons, you're actually hallucinating, and what you see as balloons are actually people wonder if at the end, you can jump the spike strip
This game was incredibly interesting and horrifying in a Childhood Trauma kinda way, with the glitches and all. I loved Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing, and these two strike me as the biggest inspirations for this game! Mario Kart for obvious reasons and Diddy Kong Racing for the exploring and talking to characters aspect.
I think the ending was fumbled - all that buildup only for it go exactly as you would expect. Everything else, really cool. The balloon room made me think of the watermelon room
Such a cool game. It starts as an innocent kart racer and very fast you realize that something isn't quite right. Loved the presentation and open ended design of this. A lot of this relies on player discovery and when it all starts clicking, it's great

@charondusk5608 that's why you never make a big deal about your fam projects until you release them to the masses. Why literally no one has learned this lesson despite every major project being taken down versus, say, Super Mario 64 PC being released when it was under the radar still defies me.
Once this game is finished, I really hope it has a completely normal campaign that you can play by avoiding all the creepy stuff and staying on the track. The idea of it being an otherwise normal Kart racer would add to the realness.
You know a game is janky-bad when manly won't dig for additional content. I think the most frightening part was the massive headache it gave me. Kudos to MBH for powering through that anyhow

If I had a nickel for every time there was a horror game featuring a purple cat in 2024, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Kitty descends the nine circles of hell. The title screen is limbo. Level one is lust, with bright happy colors and music. The picture depicts someone on the edge of a drop. Level two is gluttony, the “mud” leaving Kitty slow and impotent. The picture depicts Kitty with devil horns pushing that person off. Level three is greed, with the Egyptian pyramids representing wealth. The picture depicts the first person’s descent into hell. Level four is anger, the fallen figures screaming in pain and anger for their fate. Level five is heresy, except instead of flaming tombs the heretics are in balloons I guess. The picture depicts the person befriending the teeth-basher. The teeth-basher goes to the living world and brutally kills Kitty by repeated blows to the face. Level six is violence, which is Kitty’s true fate for pushing the first person to their death, since he can’t recognize himself or what he is saying (the text may also be garbled because all his teeth have been knocked out). The picture shows Kitty arriving to their new hell, with the first person looking on. Level seven is fraud, the cutesy medium of the game giving way to the truth showing the bloody teeth. Level eight is treachery, with seemingly helpful arrows leading to the finish line but it stays just out of reach as the spikes come out of nowhere leaving Kitty stranded and subject to their ultimate fate, eternal torment by the teeth-basher.
well... that's terrifying in my book, a colourful cartoon game with disturbing things and uncomfortable moment, the congratulations room with the balloons that pops something else besides confetti's caught my attention and I've never felt horrified when I found out what's inside those balloons.. and the kids crying and people screaming when it pops.. my god I'm speechless of what to say about this game.
Reminded of when I was around 6 and a friend tried to glitch a map in mario kart 64 apparently a rumor that the beach level if you fell through a part you would end up at peach's castle.
I had feeling this reminds me in some way of Yume Nikki especially with different maps being like different worlds, and then Manly himself mentioned that right as I had that thought! 20:17
It's cool, and exactly the kind of game that draws my interest and imagination. That said, I can't really understand the hidden story. There are pieces here and there: 1. First world, girl is near the cliff, and the well with an crashed cart implies someone jumped into the well; 2. Second world (chocolate world), I'm guessing the girl "fall down", and needed help, but the other girl refused to help because she would get dirty; 3. Third world (desert world), a character who doesn't understand desert, or feel anything? And the world just gets progressively unstable; 4. Fourth world-- the scare. Someone was clearly in trouble-- probably how things _actually are;_ 5. Fifth world, birthday world. Made me go "is this THAT kind of story too"? lol 6. The last three is more obvious-- highway, to parking lot, to underground parking lot, where you finally... "win". The progression here is clear at least, though not sure who the white cat is supposed to be. Maybe the evil entity, if you apply fishing to people. I'm thinking that maybe the game is just cool and creepy, and there's not really meant to be a... full plot that tie everything together. At least I can't draw anything conclusive from this. Feels like there were multiple plot lines honestly.
Manly I'm going to be honest with you. Whatever I feel sad or something or just feel like I really need to scare I watch your videos. They make me jump I'm not going to lie. I hope you have a scary day!
my expectations for this game were pretty low given how many “cute thing gone scary” games there are but the horror elements of this one combined with the polish of the game really elevated it for me!! its so high quality and the dialogue along with that crazy sound design made it so good
The cat in the Mario Kart vehicle looks like one of the hedgehogs from Sonic when you're driving. The sound has the Nintendo 64 vibe, I like honk button it has in the game.
really fantastic visuals, very good ominous wandering, I really liked basically everything. except the ending. it, personally, felt like a lackluster and generic end to an otherwise really entertaining and bizarre game and I feel like the devs could do better than that tbh
my guess for the story (assuming its in the order we find the pictures) is some fluffy haired kid is lonely and got bullied, but at some point got visited by a... thing that tormented the other kids back for him, either intentionally or for him, with them being based on how they bullied him. pig tail girl shoved him in mud or a pool so shes trapped in a pit of it, the dog did something in the desert so hes trapped there, mouse might've embarrassed him at a party so shes trapped in a void of screaming balloons, and its possible the cat we play did something at a road and/or involving fishing (possibly left him at a lake and drove home? who knows) so its a flooded roadway
"Lovely Sweet Dream" Heh. You'd definitely have to know about this game prior. Imagine trying to play it straight and think it's trying to compete with Big Rigs for best 3D racing title.
Cute game, and well done... But also, not yet what I crave for. As an avid consumer of unfiction, I want a TGIF that's not another walking simulator (from Petscop to Rapid Eyes and even Shipwrecked). That's part of why I'm a fan of Diminish, it's a platformer/rage game playing heavily on its mechanics/gameplay to convey its story/atmosphere. Well here we have a race game, but eventually you just go to places and see stuff. It doesn't really play on the race gaming conventions/mechanics. Admittedly I don't see how to exploit them for storytelling but that's the point. Eh, it was a game-jam, it's quite amazing in that context. I'm just rambling. EDIT: Oh yeah, and why so many N64 ghost-titles? C'mon, the Saturn was the cursed console.

Are you proud of yourself?"
At least that's my interpretation lol.
Or am I reading too much into this
6:08 she says why are you "still" down there.
Nice theory!
Though, I think the flashing images during the ending are actually showing us Kitty’s teeth being knocked out during her beating.
It is a demo! It’s being updated regularly and will eventually have a full telease
@@compassrose1466 That’s awesome to hear. I had a feeling a game this well made would be expanded upon beyond the gamejam.

did you know the music in the shi- i mean...
Tbh I've seen this game played twice and almost completely tuned all of the sounds out, music included, both times so I didn't notice any auditory trick like that but I can believe they probably exist, maybe the commentary and excessive jumping sounds on this playthrough just broke that effect

first one of these "n64" style games that actually kinda gets the style right (a lot are just low res and that's it), i appreciate that pretty much everything is a billboard sprite like you would have seen on the actual system, and the texturing on the actual 3d objects is clear, with very sparse use of 3d only where it's needed.
(unlike a lot of other games like this)
It looks like this was a game jam game? So, I gi e them a lot of grace for that.
Can't wait to see what they make next.
i love the Style of this, i just wish it leaned into the kart gimmick a little more
like it doesn't feel like a horror racing game, it feels like a kind of typical "walking in spooky environments and collecting vague lore" game where your sprite happens to be in a car
I think it's effective, the road spikes at the end were a pretty clever way to keep the player from escaping
yeah, it was strange to have such large worlds that had nothing in them. i think the mud world was the only one he even used the jump mechanics on.
When you're driving to your mimi's house but accidentally fall off the world and end up in the poo dimension, hate when that happens, such an inconvenience
and then I get my friggin teeth kicked in by some lanky goofball I’m left stranded there for an hour, SUPER annoying
Honestly....
This game was more sad than scary.
Just made me very sad for the Cat.
As someone who often is alone. I feel for the Cat.

not only are the VISUALS extremely faithful to mario kart 64, (even the little "bounce" that happens everytime you drift is straight from the game!) but also the gameplay! mario kart 64 is the only installment in the series where you can actually go offroad exploring areas such as peaches castle from mario kart 64! obviously you can go offroad in other mario kart games, but in other games there's not really many places to go other than the racetrack. so cool!! i can tell the developers really care alot about mk64 :D
okay wow the modeling and gameplay really reminds me of when i would play mario kart on my dsi… i knew of maybe 2 secret paths that would help you get ahead in the race … but the emptiness is already setting and eerie tone and then the cart crashed and the drawing… haunted game maybe?
"Skrunklesoft" 10/10 fake dev names

"I think you need the ExpansionPak, my friend." lmfao I forgot all about that thing.
I like that the beginning is so cute with the bubble letters, pastel colors, and the pink sweet cat
This would be a fire racing game tbh
That track is so Nice to look at
the exploration aspect really adds a lot to this, especially when a lot of other retro-style horror games are very railroaded.
I remember as a kid I had a digimon racing game for the gameboy advance, and for the timer races I love exploring off the race map and see how far I could go before hitting the invisible wall. Finally seeing a horror adaptation for this exploration

I really thought it was going to be a Wreck It Ralph situation, and those drawings were of the actual main character - a sheep
That ending is only for the demo; the developers are working on making this a full game.
Such a cool game. It starts as an innocent kart racer and very fast you realize that something isn't quite right. Loved the presentation and open ended design of this. A lot of this relies on player discovery and when it all starts clicking, it's great
that monster is horrifying. i love monsters in games that are actually scary
the screaming writhing burnt corpses are awesome as hell. underrated detail

True horror would be the takedown of Bloodbornekart.

@charondusk5608 that's why you never make a big deal about your fam projects until you release them to the masses.
Why literally no one has learned this lesson despite every major project being taken down versus, say, Super Mario 64 PC being released when it was under the radar still defies me.
Don't cry because it's down. Laugh because it's canon.
Once this game is finished, I really hope it has a completely normal campaign that you can play by avoiding all the creepy stuff and staying on the track. The idea of it being an otherwise normal Kart racer would add to the realness.

Reminded of when I was around 6 and a friend tried to glitch a map in mario kart 64 apparently a rumor that the beach level if you fell through a part you would end up at peach's castle.
The ending is, a lot more brutal than I expected
I had feeling this reminds me in some way of Yume Nikki especially with different maps being like different worlds, and then Manly himself mentioned that right as I had that thought! 20:17
It's cool, and exactly the kind of game that draws my interest and imagination. That said, I can't really understand the hidden story. There are pieces here and there:
1. First world, girl is near the cliff, and the well with an crashed cart implies someone jumped into the well;
2. Second world (chocolate world), I'm guessing the girl "fall down", and needed help, but the other girl refused to help because she would get dirty;
3. Third world (desert world), a character who doesn't understand desert, or feel anything? And the world just gets progressively unstable;
4. Fourth world-- the scare. Someone was clearly in trouble-- probably how things _actually are;_
5. Fifth world, birthday world. Made me go "is this THAT kind of story too"? lol
I really like the highway track with the white cat.
Really soothing and calm
They did a great job at keeping it creepy. Felt uncomfortable the whole time. I need to watch something happy after this
my expectations for this game were pretty low given how many “cute thing gone scary” games there are but the horror elements of this one combined with the polish of the game really elevated it for me!! its so high quality and the dialogue along with that crazy sound design made it so good
The cat in the Mario Kart vehicle looks like one of the hedgehogs from Sonic when you're driving.
The sound has the Nintendo 64 vibe, I like honk button it has in the game.
"It says I'm first" N-no. That's the lap count. Lap 1/3.
I actually know the guy who made the character models for this game, so it's pretty cool to see a video on something he worked on.
15:31 he just standing there menacingly
him constantly honking the horn is both very funny but also a lil annoying lol
really fantastic visuals, very good ominous wandering, I really liked basically everything. except the ending. it, personally, felt like a lackluster and generic end to an otherwise really entertaining and bizarre game and I feel like the devs could do better than that tbh
my guess for the story (assuming its in the order we find the pictures) is some fluffy haired kid is lonely and got bullied, but at some point got visited by a... thing that tormented the other kids back for him, either intentionally or for him, with them being based on how they bullied him. pig tail girl shoved him in mud or a pool so shes trapped in a pit of it, the dog did something in the desert so hes trapped there, mouse might've embarrassed him at a party so shes trapped in a void of screaming balloons, and its possible the cat we play did something at a road and/or involving fishing (possibly left him at a lake and drove home? who knows) so its a flooded roadway
this actually gave me genuine apprehension! WELL DONE!
that long highway part was so good
I'm always super happy when I see a new MBH video. Just always good to have on either watching or in the background, it's a win-win
"Lovely Sweet Dream" Heh. You'd definitely have to know about this game prior. Imagine trying to play it straight and think it's trying to compete with Big Rigs for best 3D racing title.
Well the fact it was submitted to lsdjam explains more than half of the weird stuff.
This was really good, definitely one of my favorites of this low poly nostalgia horror games. I hope to see more like it!

Outside of the slightly brighter color pallet it does have that Mario kart 64 feel with the graphics and 2d sprite driver
You can see how much love and effort was pur in that game. That's just amazing
I wanna see this expanded upon so badly.
