The AC stopped blowing cold in one day. This video shows some troubleshooting to find the 30A 30 Amp fuse that was the culprit for the AC not engaging and blowing cold!

I saw this video a while back. Today I used what I learned here. Talk about earning street credit as a common hero on a 95 degree day! Cold ac thanks to this fine TH-cam contributor!
I've had AC problems for a year. Every time the car is stopped the AC would turn off... I couldn't find the fault, I almost changed the climatronic. Until I saw your video and one of the leaf fuses next to the one that burned on you was burned out. I change it and it works perfectly. Thank you so much!
Thx Mucho! I had a dirty 30A fuse over the battery. Cleaned out the fuse contacts and bam, AC. I had changed out the compressor a few years ago. I'm going to share a fix w/ you. During my compressor swap, a mouse at the wire on my ATS (Atmospheric Temp Sensor). The FCU thought it was 32F. AC would not turn on. I discovered it after I went thru the Shop manual electrical section and jumpered out the ATS at the FCU to discover the problem. Note, the ATS was never mentioned in the Shop Manual..
Wow my AC quit working and I stumbled on your video and my fuse looks very much like yours. I’m going to change it out and see if that fixes it like it did yours. Thank you sooooo much!!!
Yes it sure did. I’m going to get a new fuse panel and swap it out. Also going to swap out the fan control module. It’s 22 years old so it’s probably ready
Had the same issue right now. Car was in the workshop for 2 weeks but they couldn't find the problem. They tried things like changing fan control module and AC control module ( i have climatronic), some new sensors etc. but they haven't noticed this little oxidation on this fuse. to be specific this fuse is for level1 of the coolant fans. level2 is one of the bigger fuses. by turning on AC they blow both in level 1 and this engages the AC. with a bad fuse the fans won't spin, the signal to the control module is missing and because of that the AC won't work.
Well lol I been bragging on this pos car a great ac and then no ac . I have no clue on how this system works . So after a few ubtube I changed the ac module and no change . I could jumper the fans and ac compressor and make them work . I even tested the fuses with a test light but it was not under a load . As Paul Danner said test under a load . So when I tried to pull the fuse which would light up the test light it was stuck with the green crustys . Damn lol cleaned up the blades and sprayed them with wd40 . Work good now thanks for the information.
Take the fuse box apart note where those in line fuses go they are all different amp as I didn’t oops to clean the connection properly great video though
Mine stopped working and both fuse 16 and the one one the battery is ok. But....when I remove fuse 16 the fans starts and when I put it back they stops. Ground issue? The ac worked fine before I parked the car for the winter (in a barn)
Sounds strange. Barns have mice and rats, which I hate. Hopefully they haven't chewed through any of your wiring. Many people have had an issue with the large alternator cable, as Gordoman says, about 3 years ago in the comments below.
i had exactly the same thing happen except putting the new fuse in did nothing to help haha. pulling the fuse out while running made the engine rev a little higher for a moment so somethings going on, hopefully its just not drawing enough power to engage yet, i still have to clean up the contacts and try again
@@wellingtonviking nope, no fix at all, i had limited testing equipment at the time, will need to try more thoroughly once i bring the car down to my house. its entirely possible the AC compressor clutch is nackered, if i had an external power supply thats what i would have tried next.
Hi,i have to try tommorow this! In my case i have climatronic, when I turn it on,it cools but not as it should. Only one fan turns on ,smaller one but bigger one stays off. I hope that this would help me😀 mechanic says that my compressor is in bad condition ,but first i must try this! Thank you anyway🤙
@@wellingtonviking fuse was ok. I dont know further what can be culprit,i hope only bigger fan . But im now waiting for the master because i dont know what to do next
The housing wasn't completely destroyed on mine. The metal female fuse holder that holds the male fuse legs was intact and in good condition. It looked worse than it was due to the fried plastic. If the metal is completely melted on yours, the light tester wouldn't work. If the metal pieces are damaged, it would be worth replacing.
@@vampir335 I'd look at it this way: if they are weakened and brittle, the whole part should be changed. If they still are strong, and just have some sort of superficial discoloration, I'd try a new fuse.
This is just the beginning.after this the alternator cable (big black on the left)starts to cook the fuse box.then the 3rd over starts to melt too. It’s a crappy design from VW tbh
So far so good. It’s been a year and nothing else had happened. AC still blowing cold and no other shorts or melting wires yet. How soon after did those fail on your MK4?
Same exact thing happened to me. As a matter of fact VW Beetle owners had a class action suit against VW years ago. I have replaced my top-of-battery fuse block once, and I replaced the alternator to battery cable with heavier gage. That was about 10 years ago, and no problems since. I think the cable has been the biggest culprit. My original was absolutely fried. Horrible, incompetent design.
Have you checked all the fuses? That's the same thing mine was doing and the fuse fixed it. You could also have a leak in your system, have you checked for this? With the DYI AC recharge kits, you need to make sure you're staying within the gauge so you don't under or overcharge the system.
@@wellingtonviking I only put 2 bottles of refrigerant gas and no leaks anywhere might be a little square looking piece that sits under the battery that has 2 fuses connected to it its called cooling fan control module to see if anything works
@@wellingtonviking alright so I put everything together, I had put 2 refrigerant gas about 2 weeks ago, about 20 minutes ago i put 2 more, the ac compressor was working fine AC was cold while putting the 3rd bottle, when i put the 4th one the AC compressor started turning on and off and is not throwing cold air anymore Is it because I put to much refrigerant gas?
hot ac? are you not getting any heat? hopefully it's not your heater core. check for damp carpets in the front and an antifreeze smell and the level of your coolant.
@@wellingtonviking hmm, there is no leak, like i drive car so its hot, then i put temp on max and it barely happens anything, it gets warmer but not warm, ,like medium, and same with making it max cold air, it dont get cold it stays medium :O
I have an 03 jetta and the cooling fan wont come on no matter what, fuses and voltage on top of battery are good but every time i put a new fuse into fuse #16 it blows when i turn the ac on. Any help would be greatly appreciated its too hot to not have ac

I just shared this video on many MK4, and TDI forums. Trying to spread the word. Thanks again!
