I gotta say, this game and REmake really, really make me wish we could still see games using pre-rendered backgrounds. Both games are still immaculately gorgeous to this day. I gotta say man, glad you covered this one. It's one of the few RE games I've yet to play, and now I'm really looking forward to snagging it
I know exactly how you feel! I would love to see more games like that. I'm glad I could turn a few people on to some new games. That always puts a smile on my face.
My thoughts exactly! What I truly miss about the old fixed camera and pre-rendered backgrounds is the sense of cinematography that they had, it adds to the mood and immersion. The closest thing I've seen in modern games is Until Dawn, that game's environments felt spooky.
Cameron Standring I thought that too. It's one of the reasons I wasn't a huge fan of Code Veronica that they did away with the pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. 0, 1, 2 and 3 the Resident Evils for me. 4, 5, and 6 moved too far away from what I liked. I haven't played 7 but given it's first person I think I'd prefer it over 4, 5 and 6.
It’s so true. REmake was a stunning treasure of a game back on the GameCube. Same with Zero. The HD ports basically make them the only definitive versions to play, in my opinion, because the creative direction of the games is fully realized with ultra-high quality pre-rendered backgrounds.
Yes it holds up well because of very good art direction. A common comment is that games that don't aim for a cartoony, sprite or anime art style age poorly. However the main RE games to 4 and Silent Hill 1-3 MGS2 & 3 DMC1 and Final Fantasy VII-IX I feel have artistically aged well. Art direction is important, especially in future proofing the visual appeal of the game.
@@LaughingBatIt makes no sense for Rebecca to go from capable fighter to cowering in a med room. The mechanics are potentially game breaking and frustrating. This game is crap and that’s why it gets treated as such. It’s not “underrated” and claiming to now love maligned and ignored past media doesn’t make you cool.
Man the only problem I had with the game's no inventory boxes was it wouldn't let my OCD rest. I remember every time I would get to a new area I would take 5 or 6 trips back to the previous area to get all my stuff, and I would do this over and over and over again until the end of the game. I had a pile of every gun, ammo type, tool, and health pickup littered all over the floor in a massive shining pile. I cant.... I can't just not collect things okay?
I know some people dislike this game but I really enjoyed it when it came out. I remember a friend and I were playing it on a windy Saturday night at his house on our own and we were terrified! Great memories.
When I hear people say "dislike" and "RE0" in the same sentence, one thing always comes to mind... "HOW?". I mean, on the merit of graphics alone, how can you not be enchanted by it? It looks like a movie, it looks unique, there are almost no other games like it. That one case where the graphics really can make a game... but of course, it has much-much more than graphics alone.
Cheappy V because remake does everything that re0 does better and only adds more content, the main issue with zero is that it has a lot of poor design choices that keep it from being a true classic like the other games, look at the mansion and train sections they’re so linear in how you can approach them and the design is in a way that feels like the game is trying to waste your time, every key item is placed across from each other and there’s only one way to get to them with very very small exceptions and the goofy hook shot is the biggest offender while ok remake you can get a lot of the items in different orders which changes how the events play out. The monster designs are bland and don’t hold s candle to the the other games in the franchise and the environments while looking beautiful don’t really have a horrific vibe to them they kinda just feel there. I can see why this game lead to the push towards an re4 style, re0 just isn’t scary and the only thing fans really like about it so the controls and camera style I don’t feel like it does justice to the franchise that people come to for survival horror. It’s a clear example of liking a game in spite of another and I would say that re4 did a better job at being s horror game than zero did
This game did more to create a bond between the characters than RE5. Notice that Billy and Rebecca don't talk to each other that much, yet because you control both of them and have to strategically use them according to the situation, you feel like they are growing on each other. It's so immersive. My favourite moment is when Billy is attacked by the Eliminator, and you have to control Rebecca. You feel vulnerable, you have to get your guard up like 20 times more than before. And Rebecca has to face the Proto Tyrant by herself. When you reunite with Billy, you feel immensive relief. I have only 2 complaints about the game. First - shotgun and grenade launcher take up 2 spaces. It just makes the item management tedious as fuck. Second - the MOTHERFUCKING hookshot. When I found out in the church that I have to get back to the train crash site to get it, I wanted to punch a person that had come up with such a "wonderful" idea in the face. And yeah - on Hard mode, this game WILL kick your ass if you are not careful. Once, I had to restart the whole game because I was too trigger-happy in the train and ran out of handgun ammo in the Training Facility. I think it is the hardest classic RE. Apart from the first boss. You can knife the sucker with no damage no problem.
Yeah, I gotta agree with you. That grappling hook is a real mother fucker. I always forget I need it, and end up having to backtrack back to the train crash. It would have been nice if the shotgun took up 1 space in the inventory. I don't think this would have thrown the balance off at all.
+Cheappy V Yeah, but it's a realism for the sake of realism. Why a handgun takes up as much space as a key? And grenade launcher as 2 keys? And when a hunter slashes you with it's keys, why aren't you crawling spilling your guts on the floor?) My point is, if you gonna make a realistic game, work on every aspect of the game and make it immersive.
Facing Proto Tyrant alone is way better than having an AI partner that ain't exactly intelligent. As if anything, having a partner is more vulnerable than being solo especially with this type of gameplay that wasn't exactly made for having a partner system.
Can we talk about how awful that bat boss fight was though? It was clearly not built with the limitations of camera angles and aiming in mind which makes it a chore.
I hate how getting struck by the mini-bats resulted in manual aiming interruption, how they threw off auto-aim, and their unlimited numbers. The only weapon that's actually pretty effective against it is the SMG, which is annoying, not to mention it's a solo boss fight.
@@Queeblo002 you can kill it with 5 flame grenades before it even summons the little bats if you stun it at the right time and just keep firing. i actually think it's a cool boss fight, because it's one of the most challenging in the series. they give you a save point right before fighting it and it would be lame if it were easy.
That boss fight was the reason I rage quit the game, but from behind that I thought 0rigins' enemy system was not developed properly and it was just challenging in the wrong way plus I didn't find the game's story interesting, at least with Code: Veronica's difficulty it's more thought out then this one, either way the rest of the game is great but like I said I could not get behind some of the design in this game from what I mentioned, great retrospective as always Jared.
The STARS organization was actually national. They worked closely with local PD's but they weren't cops. The SD Perry novels went more in depth about them.
STARS are a mix of ex-military and researchers. Most of them died by surprise. Billy was an officer in the marines and was part of a team sent to fight a guerilla group so he had a lot of combat experience. He just wasn't some random prisoner.
@@PeacefulJoint SD Perry novels are now in the past, non canon, sadly. So why complicate it? STARS are RPDs search and rescue team. Not "spec ops" or "specnaz" :)
I can see why people say that, but I found it very rewarding when I had to run all the way back to the mansion to get my grenade launcher just to beat the final boss on hard. Say what you want but it changed the experience, and IMO it was very cool.
@@supradoom Yeah it does change the dynamic but my problem with it is that unlike Resident Evil 1 & 2 the structure of 0 is more linear than those games so that usually means you only have 1 way to get to your stuff and if your playing it on hard it means dealing with harder enemies on your there
Was looking to finally pick this game up, and this is a great review! It's a shame that RE3 and RE2 were more remakes than remasters and wasn't a fan of how they turned out so radically different than the originals; I would have loved to have seen them get the same treatment as the first game, and that one and this one are the best-looking REs in my opinion.
Fun times, I actually think you're spot on, RE0 should be heaven for any true, purists, hardcore RE fan, but since it's debut on GC, it's one of the most under-rated horror games, obviously we know being a Nintendo exclusive didn't help it sell. Still, I got the HD version since I lost all my old games, and it's better then ever, and you picked the coolest footage to prove how accurate your perspective on Zero is, the tyrant, the detailed rooms, zombies, hunters! You can't knock it
It really is underrated! I just hope I made it look appealing enough, that some people try it out. It's pretty cheap right now, so I assume that'll happen.
Yeah, Zero was dealt a tough hand, imagine if the N64 version released on PS1 after RE2? I think we'd have a much bigger audience for it, but the way it turned out was honestly exactly what I wanted for it back on GC, like you said PS2, and Xbox can't compare. When I play the HD Zero I literally feel like I'm playing a brand new classic style RE, it was always the toughest RE game so back then I beat it maybe 5 times? Not a lot for an RE game tho.
Did you play The Last of Us? I would probably pay for like a 1-3 hour analysis of that game, I'm not sure if you dig it as much, but I feel that is definitely a genre you're very good with, and I love hearing about that game, especially with someone who really knows the history of the genre that's not easily fooled. I also say it's connected to your work already as I truly believe it's the biggest game today that wouldn't exist if not for the entire RE series. Lastly I bet a large portion of your fans already want it, but don't know it, plus Part 2 is getting close.
Nicholas Snyder Sounds corny, but this was a gamer's dream come true for me. Had never heard of it despite playing the originals a million times since I was a kid. So it felt like getting a brand new, classic RE out of nowhere. Love everything about it.
I enjoyed this game. It was a neat new approach to the series. As you said, it gave vets a different perspective and challenge. I will never forget seeing the water in the kitchen sink of the train for the first time. It was the best graphics I had ever seen up to that point.
RE0 on hard is one of the most challenging runs I've ever completed. It forces you to plan ahead and be as efficient as possible with your supplies. The hard mode run of this game really reflects what OG RE was all about.
I can get behind that. Up until I put out this video, I never knew that the game split the fan base so hard. People either love this game, or they hate it. At least, if my comment section is anything to go off of.
Great video, man! I friggin' love this game. I played it for the very first time when the HD Remaster came out and was blown-the-fuck-away! It's a gorgeous game! But yeah, I got hooked, played through it countless times, damn near got the platinum trophy--it's just fantastic! Can't believe that I had missed out for so damn long.
Hey better late than never. I rented it, when it first dropped on GC, and went all out. Closed the door, turned off the lights, cranked the volume. It was fucking sweet!
One thing the RE0 team did was fixing Rebecca's character, in RE1~RE Remake she acts like a little girl who couldn't take care of herself, in RE0 she looks and acts like a novice in the Special Forces wich makes more sense. Aside from that good review and my thanks for not letting this game out of the retrospective :D
Oh for sure! I had to include it. It's too good to pass up. I think you're right. They did turn Rebecca into a more likable character. Thanks for the love man!
Actually she was more realistically portrayed in RE1. She was an 18 year old brain child straight out of college who enlisted with STARS solely to get her own private lab. The books go into way more detail.
You're videos convinced me to dive into this and RE1Remake after playing all the over the shoulder/first person entries. Just cleared 1 and am playing 0 now. They have not disappointed. Your content is next level.
I missed this growing up. Played it a few years ago and it was an absolute blast. I've replayed it a ton since and it's become one of my absolute favorites. Very challenging, interesting new mechanics, classic puzzles, and holy shit it is GORGEOUS. Most underated game in the series.
Thank you so much for making this series. The excellent writing, video editing, and obvious dedication that you put into these films make your passion for Resident Evil show crystal clear. Kudos.
True, with Avalanche Reviews, we get to see that out of every series, RE probably has the richest, most interesting development history, it almost single handedly built the survival horror genre from nothing. A few of the images he uses in this video I haven't seen for 20 years, since they showed up in EGM in the late 90's in a preview of RE0 on N64, just incredible.
My biggest problem was how forgettable most of it was. Other than the train and the locations from RE2 I really can't recall much about the rest of it. Every other game I know by heart. And the hit stun and slow control response made the whole game feel lethargic.
That's why I love Classic RE games - no repeating assets, all of the backgrounds are completely unique, done by hand and different from each other. That's not your average 3D shooter game. RE4 is what I would call the definition of forgettable, at least in this series.
Damn, this sums RE0 up for me quite well. I didn't think it was a bad game, and Rebecca is one of my favorite characters, but i love my inventory chests and i hated character "zapping" i'm sitting here now watching this, and i can't really recall many of the details. Goes to show how much more i prefer REmake and RE2 XD
I bought RE 0 and RE 1 Remake for the 360 for Holloween. I have to say that even though I liked them, RE 0 item system sucked. Seriously! So many backtracking to get all the items that you dropped!
Yeah. Still the games were really good. Playing them alone in the home at night while outside had a bad weather was amazing. Good times. Keep up the good work!
@@Safersephiroth777 it would have been nice to include at least one side pack in the game but once you've beaten it a couple times it's not so bad, you know what you need and what you don't.
@@Jack_80 Yeah BUT games should be judged when you play them the first time. And without patches too. I mean imagine if people were trying to review Division 2 for example and Ubisoft said that you can't do it because the game keeps getting updated so you should wait a a few years to do the reveiw! So yeah first impressions and all that.
I know I'm a minority on this, but RE0 is actually my favorite in the series. The claustrophobic environments gives the game a much more intense atmosphere. And for the record, Billy is my favorite RE Character. Capcom, BRING BACK BILLY!
RE2 is my all time favorite. RE0 is my second favorite. Billy is probably my favorite overall character. Seeing as how if he ever showed back up he woulda been executed. I doubt we'll see him again unfortunately. He was 26 in 1998 making him 46-47 now. How cool would that be if we saw middle aged Billy show back up in one of the new games. Hell I'd settle for just a reference to him to give fans closure about what happened to him.
I love RE Zero, I bought it on day one for my Game Cube back in the day. It is a masterpiece if you compare it to all the shit that came later (RE4, RE5, RE6,...)
In terms of the voice acting. I much prefer Rebeccas RE0 voice actress then her RE-remake one. I don't know why but I do. her RE0 voice fits her better IMHO. I really like the Partner gameplay in RE0. On easy you can keep Bill and Rebecca together most of the time but on harder difficulties it is just better too use Billy most of the time (minus the separation parts.) You kinda have too plan ahead with items and weapons when they are separated. I fought the Tyrant once without the magnum or shotgun on accident with Rebecca. I was raging at my stupidity.
Yeah, it's easy to mess up and leave Rebecca with no way to defend herself. I like the voice actress for zero as well. She sounds more like I would imagine her sounding.
combatking20 It was jarring at first, but I also came to love it. Felt like I was making so many more decisions playing Zero than any other RE. Very strategic.
Magnum you get right after billy is separated in the tram car. The factory was so short so I don't get why you didn't have the magnum. It takes about 8 magnum shots and 4 custom handgun shots to down tyrant on normal. You shouldn't be playing on hard if its your first time.
RE0, Arkham Origins, God of War Ascension, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. All of these games are prequels and are considered to be the most underrated installments of their respective franchises. Also I thought that RE0 was a PS3 game. Just goes to show how devs at the time put EFFORT in the games they develop.
The HD remaster really redeemed this game for me, I could just never seem to get through it on the Gamecube. I would still say it's my least favorite of the classic games, but it had gone pretty high up in my estimation.
Avalanche Reviews, Nah. I think it was more the fact I didn't have to change disks mid way through, I know you had to do that for remake and 4 but Zero also had the item dropping thing and I know it sounds weird but it felt like a real hurdle, the HD remake seemed more accessible
What did it for me was door skipping mod on PC. Laugh all you want but the fact that I could play without annoying loading screens every 5 seconds made everything better.
Doorskip makes the remasters so much better. I can't imagine how tedious Leech Hunter would be without it, considering how many rooms you have to constantly enter, exit, and re-enter between shots.
Man what an awesome and inspiring video! To be honest i never understood why in North America people just love complaining about good games. I remember the whole Wind Waker hate and now all of a sudden is a cult classic. For some reason here in Latin America Re Zero was a blast! The brilliant music and nostalgic atmosphere and challenging gameplay... The graphics! And the original ideas make this one a hell of an experience... I really feel bad for people who cant enjoy games anymore
Gotta thank you for doing this series. I've played every RE game but was never a fan of the classic games. I got most of the way through CVX and beat the Outbreak titles but never put much time into them otherwise. Watching through this series encouraged me to give them another try. I decided to start with 0 since I've only played it for a few minutes prior. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually having more fun with RE0 than RE4 as I play both. That's saying something. Without these videos, my copies of the old games would've just kept collecting dust.
Just beat this and i gotta say i love this game. Easily my second favorite behind the original RE (Gonna play REmake next). Specifically because its more puzzle based like RE1 than its "sequels" (which makes sense since it started development around the same time as RE1). The lack of an item box can be a bit of an issue but it didnt really change how i played too much. Id just designate a typewriter room as an item box and explore the area. The only time it became an issue was near the end when i didnt want to backtrack through several areas to get the grenade launcher, so i just went solo with billy and used the handgun to beat proto tyrant second fight. Of course i had to go back and grab my gear to fight the leech queen. The health difference between Rebecca and Billy was a bit too much. Billy could take so much damage that id solo him and clear rooms with him with just the handgun and knife and just shotgun everything else. I am looking forward to unlocking infinite ammo and playing through as Rebecca. Im also surprised to find someone else impressed by the swinging arm zombie. Keep up the good work.
Yes! It's so damn good! Just figuring out what to carry with you, and when, became its own little puzzle. Such a cool game. For this run, I played most of the game as Rebecca, just to see what it's like, and it made the game so much more stressful. Kind of like an extra hard mode.
Of course, the layout of the game seems somewhat less maze-like than the REmake, and there are obvious low points (bat fight, anywhere overflowing with Mimicry Marcus), but yeah, definitely an underrated game. It even has better mechanics in certain areas, like how you can combine items on the ground with those in your inventory, even if you're full.
Rebecca is one of my favourite RE characters. I'm not sure why, but I find her very endearing. She as the main probably pushes the game to a higher level for me despite not caring for the story of 0.
While we're on the topic of 'Partners', am I the only one who wants another Co-op Resident Evil game? Think about it, it would be really fun playing split-screen with a buddy..! Not like RE5, no. But something similar to RE0 Here. Where the partner A.I. Can actually be very fleshed-out if you're playing Solo, or they could just be like RE2 Remake and be non-existent throughout the Campaign, neither helping nor hindering you. But I'm getting off-topic. I think that if they brought Co-op into the Modern-Age, I think they could manage to pull it off while keeping that Fear Factor. Maybe even Amping it up some more. But this is just my Opinion, take it as it is, just please. I can live without the useless hate comments... Please try to control yourself if you plan on hating on me for having an Opinion.
Great retrospective! I'm happy to see people who can appreciate this forgotten gem and the things it did well. It's not perfect, but I fondly remember RE:0 as one of the last classics in the series. I was amazed by the lighting effects, the character models, and all those little artistic details like rain hitting the windows. Just watching gameplay footage is enjoyable.
RE games i played and beat in order. RE code: Veronica, RE1 remake, RE0, RE4, RE5. I loved all of them. I bought RE 2 and 3 a long time ago for the gamecube but every time i started to play they would crash with disc error so unfortunately i still have not played them. I played a little bit of RE 6 but something about it turned me off but one day I plan on beating it. I dont have a ps4 or xbox one so i haven't played RE7 yet. I have been gaming for over 3 decades and without a shadow of a doubt RE4 is my favorite and most satisfying game to play and in my opinion the GOAT.
RE 0 is the misunderstood rebellious teen of the franchise. It doesn't always do what you want and makes you stay up late worrying about it but you still end up loving it despite it's flaws.
Rebecca is a replacement for Jill, while Billy is a replacement for Chris. The problem is that Rebecca doesn't have Jill's advantages of a larger inventory and a useful supporting character, *and* Billy's handgun is better than Rebecca's. As a result, high-level players use Rebecca as a mule and... not much else. Non-zombie enemies are utter bullshit in RE0 because of balancing the game around having two weapons active at any given time... except for all those times you're forced into single combat with those overpowered hunters and eliminators and so on, and you get to have getting stunlocked to death. RE0 is definitely the weakest entry of the original RE0-4. It's interesting from a design perspective but it doesn't play very well, especially compared to REmake and RE4.
I agree with most of what you said, but I think you're thinking of the two characters as separate, but it's them together, where the innovation is. Everything is balanced for two people being present. Item swapping, combat, puzzles, it's all based around both characters. Instead of making stand ins for old characters, they made two people, essentially work as one.
Agreed. I'm not even bothered to finish my Remaster copy on my PS4, that's how much I haven't enjoyed it. The bat and the lack of item boxes were enough for me to really dislike this entry.
The issue is that these design challenges are still noticeably easier with one character than with two. Two characters means twice as much ammo used, twice as many opportunities to take damage, and the AI is... not good. It's really only the last two bosses in the game (technically the same boss twice?) that it's better to use both characters... mostly because the game FORCES you to use both characters and stashing one in the corner while the other fights can be somewhat inconsistent if the monster decides to chase one over the other. As a result, Rebecca is pretty much useless and Billy is used for everything that the game doesn't force you to use Rebecca for. Billy can soak way more damage, fires faster with all weapons, and even moves faster. Rebecca doesn't have Jill's advantages of having more pockets and unique item, so there really isn't any purpose to her except for things the game forces you to use her for. It's like a glorified escort quest than a case of two "different but equal" partners fighting monsters together. At least Ashley was relatively good at avoiding damage...
I really enjoy this series. I was youtube searching RE6 cuz I had always been in the minority liking it, so I saw your re6 vid first. Super interesting to see you shred probably the most popular RE (4) and praise 5 and 6 for what they did right. Excellent insight into the overall picture, and this particular video motivated me to go back and play re0
It's nice to hear some love towards this game for once! However, I disagree with you on Billy's backstory. Just because it's not part of the name plot, doesn't automatically make it throwaway. It was a well done flashback that was intriguing and gave the character some extra depth we normally don't see from a RE game.
One of my favourite games in the series, bought it along with REmake on my ps4. That was my first experience with it and I absolutely loved it. The lack of item boxes was a great idea, I just wish we had seen more from Billy's character after.
@@AvalancheReviews It took me over 30 minutes to figure it out man. I've played all main RE games 0-7 except 6 lol. Plus Rev 1,2. This animal puzzle is incredible. I just loved it to death. I would love to see other people solve it during their playthrough, blind of course :)
Wow, you really have amazing content. I don't normally realize that kind of stuff but for some reason I can tell how well this video was put together and well thought out! Great job!
Daaaamn now im gonna get this one and playh it-rented it on GCN back in the day but never liked it much. Had no idea an HD remaster existed. That said, Resident Evil Outbreak File #1 next??????????????
I love the partner mechanic in this game. In the RE2 playthrough on my channel, I made the same comment about having Ada join you during Leon's campaign. I love it. Kinda makes the game feel less lonely and isolated. It's just a shame that there's no real reason to play as Rebecca in this game, aside from the required puzzles and chemical mixing parts. Billy's the clear choice for exploration given his higher defense. I kinda wish Rebecca had a perk that offered some kind of advantage against zombies, like faster move speed or faster shooting maybe.
That would have been a great idea. I actually play with Rebecca most of the time, but it's just an aesthetic choice. Billy is too big and bulky (visually). Also, it's kind of like an included hard mode.
When I did RE0, I played as Becca too. She's cute, and I liked playing as her in RE1. I don't like Billy's looks either. It's just a shame you have to choose between an ugly character and a weak one. But those are just nitpicks in an otherwise awesome game. The last great Resident Evil game, in my opinion.
Awesome retrospective! I agree with your points, been replaying this myself lately, its more enjoyable than my first play through for sure and it has some great unique features, like playing as 2 characters at once, but it can be frustrating at times and pretty difficult even on normal mode
+Avalanche Reviews Just a speculation, but maybe Capcom did not want to put a lot of money and effort into the Remake HD because of its doubtful profit perspective. A 13-year old game with outdated mechanics is not really a promising product in terms of financial gain. So they kinda half-assed it through by just bumbing up resolution and so on. But when Remake HD became a huge commercial success, Capcom decided to give Zero HD a proper remastering treatment, hence it looks so gorgeous
No, they actually said they didn't have the assets for REmake but kept the ones from 0. The fact that REmake sold well might have had a little bit of influence on 0 but the main problem is the assets.
Man i love your reviews so much youre very passionate about art... Here in Colombia we enjoyed so much this game no one really had any problems with it.. Its hard and very creative and original... Saludos!
The problem with the lack of item boxes is that it makes item management long and tedious. Most people just end up choosing a room to act as their "box". and drop all their items there. Eventually, they have to move their items to a new "box" room, which means going back and forth between the two locations over and over to transfer all the items. I think it would have been better if they kept the item boxes in addition to allowing you to drop items.
This game would have been much better if it wasn't the horrendous idea to remove ITEM BOXES! Because of that on a first playthrough you'll probably spend most of the time backtracking for items all the time due to so many things and no space. If not that them redoing stuff because you keep dying since you have to hold so many things sometimes you won't have enough health items on you. Whoever came up with that idea was the reason this game was doomed to fail as there's a reason item boxes were invented which not to cause to many unnecessary steps. And what's worse is many items take up two spaces and there are more of those than in most Resident Games making the limited space even more prevalent. It's like the developers just enjoyed shooting themselves in both feet. Backtracking isn't difficulty it's padding plain and simple.
This is my favorite game in the series. I cannot fathom why people hate on this game. Gameplay, graphics, soundtrack are all the most complex and most realistic in the series, and the mansion setting like in the 1st game is much more creppy. Its like REmake on steroids.
I love RE0, but it's Very inconvenient at times, especially when you have to run all the way back to get your stuff and do it multiple times, the enemies are good but some are frustrating, especially the bat fight, that fight doesn't really belong in a game with fixed camera angles, its very janky, but overall, I love the game, it's just very frustrating at times
Ya besides the beautiful Graphics....i still don't get the love for RE0. Prob one of my least favorites in the franchise but hey Great Retrospective as usual
This is one game I couldn't disagree with you more on. RE 0 sucks. I remember being so hyped for it (especially after playing the amazing remake of the first game) but it ended up being one of the worst disappointments of the early 2000's for me. Where to begin? The graphics seem worse than the RE remake's despite re-using some of its assets, the new item system is one of the worst gameplay changes I've ever experiences in any franchise I like, the switching between characters gets annoying VERY fast (like after the first hour of the game), the lack of good partner AI or at least a semi-reliable command system combined with its frustrating puzzles and overpowered enemies actually made me rage quit the game for several years (I started playing RE 0 in early 2004 when I got my GC and finished it many years later for the sake of having completed all games in the main series at least once). When the HD remasters of the RE remake and 0 came out I wanted to replay both, now being older, more patient and having a lot of my tastes and perspectives change since 2004... but no, it still sucks. RE 0 is a terrible game with half-baked mechanics that should have been completely scrapped when the N64 died. A shame really...
I own both RE0 and RE1 remake for the wii, and recently had my wii moded with a Wii dual hdmi port, and I can confirm that both look fantastic with native 480p and full digital to digital format.
I don't know man, you have to be way better at item conservation and inventory management, than previous games. Which plot holes did it open? Not saying there's none, butI can't think of any off the top of my head.
Avalanche Reviews it's been years since I've played re1 or re0, but there is a few that still come to mind. 1st in re1 alpha team went missing while investigating unusual attacks in the forest, they never mention an escaped convict. 2nd alpha team was investigating close to the train. The train Rebecca got on that traveled miles before crashing into the training facility. The when the facility explodes at the end you see the mansion off in the distance. So how did bravo team end up just a few minutes running distance from the mansion? I could find more, but I would have to replay the games.
Avalanche Reviews it was still a good game with solid mechanics. But at that point the writers were already loose with the story. I think they started getting lazy with the writing in code veronica.
Worst game in the entire series and the only one I don't feel compelled to finish. Shitty AI partners and a lack of organized item management slows the pacing to a crawl. The beautiful graphics were also wasted on making more than half of the enemies just giant animals. Setting up a prequel to the first game was a good idea, except the way Rebecca acts totally contradicts her behavior in Resident Evil 1, and Billy is a worthless character that is never mentioned again. I seriously wish this game never existed and I could erase my memory of it.
If there is one thing I will give RE0, it's that it has the best minigame next to Operation Mad Jackal. I know most people hate it, but I loved Leech Hunter and I like it more than most of the time-based minigames like Mercenaries. I liked how it rewarded a slow, methotic approach and how it focused on inventory management - a defining feature of the series.
As a resident evil fan, one of the aspects that i most enjoyed at a playthrough was the inventory management, so RE0 easily became one the the most enjoyble RE experiences to me, beside the punishing dificulty attracts me a lot too.
I remember getting this game as a kid for the GameCube and never being able to beat it cuz it's just so damn hard. Loves the series btw! Looking forward boulder punching!
Excellent Review! I can't believe I slept on this masterpiece for so many years! I bought the HD remake for Xbox One and can't wait to finally sinlk my teeth into it! With RE 2 remake coming up I got my hands full but considering I'm recovering from multiple concussions I got all the time in the world right now. Silver Lining in the Clouds lol, Liked and Subbed!
Damn! That sounds like a shitty situation, but hey, any time is a great time for Resident Evil games! A lot of people missed out on Zero. I'm glad to bring it to some of those people.
@@AvalancheReviews Its honestly been hell but cracking out on your channel has helped get my mind off things tonight and for that I'm truly grateful. Yes i've seriously learned more about RE from discovering your channel than anywhere else..I can tell you really put the work in and truly have a passion for RE! Iv'e never been a patron to any channel before but I think you're the channel thats gonna change that..yes you're that damn good!
I hope we see a remake of this game one day. I love Billy and Rebecca. Billy was always my favorite RE Boy. I could see so much potential this game could have as a remake. You could make it co-op but also keep the partner zapping system for single play. As a co-op game, you and your friend could decide how you want to go about clearing areas: Do you stay together and take a longer time solving puzzles but have a combat advantage over enemies, or do you both split up to clear the areas faster. The puzzles could be set-up where each character has to use their unique skills to solve the puzzles together. You cna play ont heri size differences: Becky could fit through vents and tight spaces, Billy can push larger objects. SImilar to the original. Love this game so much!
Hey, man. Great content you here. I love Resident Evil 0, because for some reason I bought this game instead of the REmake back when I had a gamecube. Keep the great work. Greetings form México.
i didn't know this got a even more beautiful pc port. an issue i have with this game is that rebecca is (or should be) a badass survivor by the end of this event....but in RE1 which takes place after this she seems to be a rookie scared of a single hunter. i loved this game and don't recall anything i personally disliked about it.
I can tell you the exact moment I stopped playing RE0, I dont know when it was specifically in the game but I had dropped a key item while switching stuff around and I had no idea which room I left it it in, but I did know that where ever it was I had to go through a room that was gonna kill me and maybe couple others beyond it as well, then I just stopped playing lol.
20:21 - They did! From what I found, the RE 0 HD Remaster (phew!) had access to lossless quality backgrounds where for RE-Make, they did not. This is why they are super sharp in RE 0 in comparison 😃
I’ve always liked this game even more then the remake even tho I loved both, Zero to me were harder and you actually had to strategically think about your next move and which character to lead if one was hurt and you were low on health items and ammo. Also the removal of item boxes was a fantastic strategy touch. People who have a problem with zero are simply people who don’t like a challenge or to actually use strategy without your hand being held.
Even though I love the game, I can understand people not wanting so much of a challenge. For me, it's probably to best example of survival horror difficulty. Easily one of my favorite entries in the series.
Awesome video as always :D I remember first getting that area where you first the prototype tyrant and thinking at the time. "this is the closest thing to a resi 2 remake we ever going to get" lol
I think it would be really interesting to see what Code Veronica might have looked like had it been made with pre-rendered backgrounds.
RE 0 looks surprisingly good considering it was released way back in 2002.
Yes it does
those gamecube releases were absolutely groundbreaking graphically, nothing compared at the time
yeah they pushed the gamecube to the limit
Yes it holds up well because of very good art direction. A common comment is that games that don't aim for a cartoony, sprite or anime art style age poorly. However the main RE games to 4 and Silent Hill 1-3 MGS2 & 3 DMC1 and Final Fantasy VII-IX I feel have artistically aged well. Art direction is important, especially in future proofing the visual appeal of the game.
Photogenic....I think
I really love RE Zero. This is probably the first video I've seen, when someone actually liked this game.
I always thought 0 was underrated. I loved the train section in particular.
I'd rank RE0R higher than RE2R. This game does so many things right for a survival horror most notably, the inventory system and partner system.
@@LaughingBat when I replay this game I usually just stick to the train section
@@tsmack7812what's the fucking point in that?
@@LaughingBatIt makes no sense for Rebecca to go from capable fighter to cowering in a med room. The mechanics are potentially game breaking and frustrating. This game is crap and that’s why it gets treated as such. It’s not “underrated” and claiming to now love maligned and ignored past media doesn’t make you cool.
William Birkin did see it coming. That's why he had a gun as he was preparing to escape with the G Virus.
I thought you were gonna say something about him being covered in eyeballs.
Yeah he did see it coming although I’m sure the irony of it completely escaped him.
A simple handgun vs mercenaries carrying assault riffles and being led by a badass in Hunk, yeah Birkin saw it coming lol.

Ha! I know the struggle!
I used to avoid it for that reason. Thankfully this game isn't too l9ng and the areas end up interconnected
So you're a headcase then? I have OCD but not like that.
Oh RE0, what a love hate relationship
Explain ur love hate relationship with it
I know some people dislike this game but I really enjoyed it when it came out. I remember a friend and I were playing it on a windy Saturday night at his house on our own and we were terrified! Great memories.
That's awesome! Little memories like that, is why retro gaming is so popular today.
It’s a clear example of liking a game in spite of another and I would say that re4 did a better job at being s horror game than zero did
I would love to see a Retrospective of Silent Hill, at least the original 4 :)
I would say you're very likely to see that from me.
Me too.
And Dino Crisis. Deep Fear was a good game too, but sadly it never had a sequel...
I have deep fear, and I will definitely convert it at some point. Dino crisis too.
Yay, awesome :)
(I have heard the last Dino Crisis game was horrible though..
It absolutely was.
I love the "realism" - big guns take more space, no teleporter-boxes.
+Cheappy V I meant "slashing with claws" xD
Facing Proto Tyrant alone is way better than having an AI partner that ain't exactly intelligent. As if anything, having a partner is more vulnerable than being solo especially with this type of gameplay that wasn't exactly made for having a partner system.
Can we talk about how awful that bat boss fight was though? It was clearly not built with the limitations of camera angles and aiming in mind which makes it a chore.
On top of that, he looked really dumb in my opinion.
I hate how getting struck by the mini-bats resulted in manual aiming interruption, how they threw off auto-aim, and their unlimited numbers. The only weapon that's actually pretty effective against it is the SMG, which is annoying, not to mention it's a solo boss fight.
Unless I'm thinking of Code Veronica I'm pretty sure you can stun-lock the bat boss
Truth is, I find it hard to believe that STARS are spec ops 😂 Billy is more spec op dude compare to the whole squad lol
@@OkurkaBinLadin Capcom can call them non cannon if they want but shinji mikami considered then cannon so I shall continue to.
Billy was a highly ranked soldier in the marines
No item box just makes the game more tedious not more difficult in a rewarding way
Yup, makes it so you have to dump items in 1 key location
I can see why people say that, but I found it very rewarding when I had to run all the way back to the mansion to get my grenade launcher just to beat the final boss on hard. Say what you want but it changed the experience, and IMO it was very cool.
@@supradoom Yeah it does change the dynamic but my problem with it is that unlike Resident Evil 1 & 2 the structure of 0 is more linear than those games so that usually means you only have 1 way to get to your stuff and if your playing it on hard it means dealing with harder enemies on your there
@@TimeBomb014X I just really enjoyed it. The challenge was refreshing.
Yup
Nice, yes, it's less known because most RE fans had PS2 by that point, but yes, in a way you're lucky to have waited till now, it's great.
Hard mode in zero killed! I never actually completed my hard mode run, but it was definitely a good kind of challenging.
Really underrated game. To me it's one of the very best RE games.
You honestly have no idea how big my smile is hearing that. Music to my ears!!
I missed this growing up. Played it a few years ago and it was an absolute blast. I've replayed it a ton since and it's become one of my absolute favorites. Very challenging, interesting new mechanics, classic puzzles, and holy shit it is GORGEOUS. Most underated game in the series.
I can definitely agree with that!
This game set up the entire concept behind revelations 2. It's so cool to see all the things that 0 did 10 plus years before Rev 2.
Thank you so much for making this series. The excellent writing, video editing, and obvious dedication that you put into these films make your passion for Resident Evil show crystal clear.
Kudos.
Thank you. I'm glad that passion shows through, because I am most definitely passionate about the series.
One of RE’s greatest sins is the fact that Billy just vanishes from the continuity.
wait...thee was a build of this for the N64??? you learn something new everyday!
I honestly don't mind tips and tricks during the video, BRING'EM ON!!!
I'm educating you in all kinds of ways!
Thanks! I gotta agree. RE probably has just the most interesting development history.
I wish the rom would leak someday.
My biggest problem was how forgettable most of it was. Other than the train and the locations from RE2 I really can't recall much about the rest of it. Every other game I know by heart. And the hit stun and slow control response made the whole game feel lethargic.
Maybe it's because I just recently finished it, but I found it pretty memorable.
That's why I love Classic RE games - no repeating assets, all of the backgrounds are completely unique, done by hand and different from each other. That's not your average 3D shooter game. RE4 is what I would call the definition of forgettable, at least in this series.
s0nnyburnett You probably just didn't play it much? I think it has some of the best environments in any RE game.
@@cheappyv5156 No repeating assets? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Nothing else i love than watching a full game talk through, for every single RE game. God man these videos are a god send, *bows gently*
With the release of village, I’m realizing just how solid and amazing the entire series really is ...
Bro, this is honestly one of the best Retrospective videos I've ever seen. Everything was just perfect and flawless. Thanks.
I bought RE 0 and RE 1 Remake for the 360 for Holloween. I have to say that even though I liked them, RE 0 item system sucked. Seriously! So many backtracking to get all the items that you dropped!
I didn't really have to do it that often, but I did pend a lot of time in the inventory menu.
Yeah. Still the games were really good. Playing them alone in the home at night while outside had a bad weather was amazing. Good times. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man!
I love it, but a lot of the comments here, are fairly negative.
Agree with u 100%
Fucj it
RE0 is frowned upon because a lot of the players give up during the train section. It really started when reaching the mansion.
Was it the graphical upgrade that did it for you?
Avalanche Reviews, Nah. I think it was more the fact I didn't have to change disks mid way through, I know you had to do that for remake and 4 but Zero also had the item dropping thing and I know it sounds weird but it felt like a real hurdle, the HD remake seemed more accessible
What did it for me was door skipping mod on PC. Laugh all you want but the fact that I could play without annoying loading screens every 5 seconds made everything better.
Doorskip makes the remasters so much better. I can't imagine how tedious Leech Hunter would be without it, considering how many rooms you have to constantly enter, exit, and re-enter between shots.
the presentation is arguably the best part of the game imo
Resident Evil 0 is my favorite RE game.
"when you leave all your good items with just one character, trust me you only make this mistake once"
OH I BEG TO DIFFER SIR!
Interesting about it's difficulty. 0 was the first RE game I beat, but I still have yet to finish Remake. It's so hard.
Really enjoying the series and your insights
Can't wait for the next video
Thanks! Much appreciated.
RE 0 is the misunderstood rebellious teen of the franchise. It doesn't always do what you want and makes you stay up late worrying about it but you still end up loving it despite it's flaws.
I couldn't have put it better myself!
David Carper couldn't agree more
Agreed. I'm not even bothered to finish my Remaster copy on my PS4, that's how much I haven't enjoyed it.
The bat and the lack of item boxes were enough for me to really dislike this entry.
David Carper why is remake so popular. That game is so dated and dull by todays standards
4:26 that scene could be related with the story of RE5 somehow (taking place in Africa)?
It does take place in Sudan I think, but I've never seen anything connecting the two events. You could be right though.
The Pregenitor virus is from Africa and Uroboros is created from the Pregenitor virus, so yes there is a link.
This game has my favorite puzzle from any game ever: The animal puzzle. ❤️❤️❤️🦁🦁🦁🦁🙏
I never really thought about that puzzle much. Interesting how that works out. A puzzle I totally forgot about could be someone's favorite.
@@Lionlovesunity took me about 10 but I agree I like it
Been waiting for this! Thanks for the upload. Keep up the good work
Fuck yeah! Thanks
This game is so damn underrated, fits snugly in my top 5 RE games.
It's coming. Don't you worry. I'll have to finish the main series though.
Wow, so much work... Survivor 2 deep plot analysis?
Some of the best narration I've ever heard. Keep up the fine work brother.
Resident Evil zero : chapter 2 needs to happen.
Isn't that just RE1?
Have where you plays as other stars member's from Zero from there point of view.
That would be cool to see.
I need to work at capcom and make Resident Evil better again. by killing off Jack.
#MakeREGreatAgain
I feel like you missed a huge opportunity in naming this REtrospective
..............WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I STARTED THIS!?!?!?!? That would have been perfect. HAAA
The perfect parter to REmake. I just wish we had one more RE game in this style, from this era.
Great video sir!
Many thanks
Awesome retrospective! I agree with your points, been replaying this myself lately, its more enjoyable than my first play through for sure and it has some great unique features, like playing as 2 characters at once, but it can be frustrating at times and pretty difficult even on normal mode
They had all the original assets of 0. With Remake they had to stretch textures, that's why it looks worse.
That makes sense. I wonder why they didn't have the source material for remake.
This being Japan and still early in the 00's I think it would probably be a budget thing. Think how much the uncompressed files must've weighed.
All things considered it's a good remaster. We could've ended with a Silent Hill remaster level disaster.
Saludos!
Oh nice!! Sounds like the people of Columbia have great taste!
Jared, sorry if it's a personal question, but may I ask what you do for a living? Curious. 😄
Sure, no problem. At night I'm a bouncer at a bar, and in the mornings, I'm a cook.
Avalanche Reviews A Gentle Giant 😍
Bustin' heads at dusk and eggs at dawn.
This is the best description of my life!
Was the first thing that popped into my head! I'm sure you've got some stories to tell over a few mixed drinks.
Backtracking isn't difficulty it's padding plain and simple.
antman1001000 the strategy is to drop items were you will need them later no backtrack its all about planning
@@diabolicwaste My friend, first playthrough trumps all, and you do not know this on your first playthrough.
Thanks man. I know I have some odd opinions, so if we can even agree half the time I'll consider it a win. Ha
thecrimsonpool Yeah, 0 and 7 are my least favourite numbered entries in the series.
@Mike Está Aqui Rebecca was never a damsel. She was tired and was taking care of (the dude that got bitten by the snake on RE1 forgot his name)
Remake 2 had amazing graphics, but imagine if it had pre rendered backgrounds, makes me wonder how realistic lighting and character models would be
This is one game I couldn't disagree with you more on.
I thought 0 was the easiest in the series. And the story created more plot holes than it closed.
They never called in the fact that they were looking for billy, so that makes sense, but you're right. It is odd having the mansion so close.
Avalanche Reviews it was still a good game with solid mechanics. But at that point the writers were already loose with the story. I think they started getting lazy with the writing in code veronica.
Yeah, that's true. I feel like 1-3 was small and contained enough to be really great, but branching out made it weaker.
You did too good of a job bro, you're gonna do all the resident evils! This is the series that's gonna make your channel famous!
Hey, let's hope so. I'm just glad to have a shit ton of re fans subscribing. Thanks man
Worst game in the entire series and the only one I don't feel compelled to finish.
Underrated game. Stunning visuals and awesome music. I also really liked Billy and Rebecca, and hope to see them in RE 8.
The Pre-rendered backgrounds in this impressed me even when I was just a kid seeing screenshots in Nintendo Power
As a resident evil fan, one of the aspects that i most enjoyed at a playthrough was the inventory management, so RE0 easily became one the the most enjoyble RE experiences to me, beside the punishing dificulty attracts me a lot too.
RE 0 and RE 4 are my personal favorites, both games just have a cool unique ambiance and fun gameplay, and a lot of replay value.
RE:0 on GameCube was my first resident evil game. I had no idea about item boxes, only drop and swap. Beyond amazing game though!
I really miss resident evil games with pre rendered graphics and fixed camera angles
I remember getting this game as a kid for the GameCube and never being able to beat it cuz it's just so damn hard. Loves the series btw! Looking forward boulder punching!
Ha! Be careful what you wish for.
No good games in the series left... ☺
I still remember fondly getting this game the day it came out on my 17th birthday. It still rules!!
I always loved Resident Evil for many reasons, but especially cause like Mortal Kombat they weren't afraid to change up the game style regularly.
There's a section in this game from Resident Evil 2, so technically a remake of Resident Evil 2 which was absolutely amazing to see
It was really awesome to get to that elevator area.
Not just the elevator area, but the water treatment plant and warehouse as well. It was an awesome nostalgia trip.
Just Beat this for the First Time, playing all the RE games in Cronilogical Order
Avalanche Reviews Fair enough valid points
00:38 wait, Jared you were actually planning to float this one past us?! 😅
For a bit. I was going to drop it right before 7
Awesome video as always :D I remember first getting that area where you first the prototype tyrant and thinking at the time. "this is the closest thing to a resi 2 remake we ever going to get" lol
Yeah, I had a nostalgia explosion when I saw that area.
