Written by Tommy James, whose version was also a major hit. In his biography (Me, the Mob and the Music) he said that he wasn't quite sure what girl's name to use for the song. My parents had me when they were in high school. They used to take me to parties with them and this was always on the playlist. I remember everyone was dancing and their group of friends would yell adlibs to this song. Growing up in the 80s was the best!
I loved the original so much as a teen and with Idol sticking so close to the original arrangement I couldn’t avoid buying and loving the 45 of this one and wearing it out in no time.
My very favorite person was my Aunt Monie. Coming back from her memorial this came on the radio. That was 5 years ago. Not really a song you hear on the radio now. I just said love you too Aunt Monie
Dancing With Myself was recorded by Generation X before Idol went solo, so it doesn't _look_ like a real "Billy Idol" song when you look it up. Also its Spotify plays are fractured among the original and various re-releases on "best of..." albums, thus making it not look like as popular a hit as it actually was.
The extended version of 'Dancing With Myself' showcases the fact that he was smart enough to surround himself with talented musicians - especially Steve Stevens who doesn't get nearly as much love as his talent deserves - when he went solo. & it carries on the great British rock n roll tradition of writing songs about masturbation.
I saw Billy Idol play a surprise couple of songs at a small music festival in the LA area about a decade back...and this is the song he started out with...can you imagine the crowd going WILD!? It was truly amazing! Will never forget ...
When this cover hit number 1 (6 years after it was released in 1981) it knocked another cover of a Tommy James song out of number 1: Tiffany's cover of I Think We're Alone Now.
Awesome! I was 10 when this song first came out. Wiki: Mony Mony is the fifth studio album by Tommy James and the Shondells. It was released in 1968. The record includes the band's hit single "Mony Mony" which reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart and #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Thanks very much for sharing Billy Idol version! MLT, WA
The best memory I have of this song I was 16 at a community dance with my parents (as their DD, which weirdy was very common). The song came on and dance filled. I of course sang the "HEY MOTHER..." at the top of my lungs forgetting who I was dancing with. My mom who is not to "hip, or cool at all" looked at me in extreme disapproval until a split second later she turned to hear my.dad singing the exact same words. We always made it a point to dance to. that sang if it came up at parties or weddings. I lost him almost a year ago and what I wouldn't give to dance with him and yelling thoses expletives one more time..❤
Old song covered by Billy, he does a great job on it. This song was originally released by by Tommy James and the Shondells (who wrote it and released it back in 1968). It was great song then and it is great by Billy, he does this song almost exactly like the afore mentioned Tommy James and the Shondells making it an awesome tribute to that group. This was so much fun and I am sure we danced to this one at my Senior Prom. Thanks for taking me back. I really appreciate the diversity that Billy Idol has in his ability to deliver different genres, something I think I see more in British groups and performers than American, though Billy is British-American and I believe most of his career was happening here in the US. Definitely worth adding to my workout playlist.
When I was 18 I moved from small town to big city and ended up going to an amazing club that this song was the last song of the night on the dance floor and so much fun…then we all stumbled to our cars still jamming to it…that was 1984
This was one me and my brothers favorite songs to dance to. One night we were on our way to a bar near our home town and got stuck by a stopped train at a railroad crossing a little two lane highway. We took the speakers out of the back of the car turned this on and started dancing in the road. Before long others pulled up behind us. We kept the music and dancing going until the train started moving again. It was so much fun. Good reaction guys.
Billy Idol definitely rocked the 1980s. This song along with 'Flesh for Fantasy' and "Dancing with Myself' are my favorite Billy Idol tracks. Hope you will be doing more Billy.

Great song. Gosh memories flooding back. To see and feel the magic of this song, you actually need to be surrounded by generation Xers when it comes on, a few drinks in and then see what happens. WITNESS! PARTICIPATE! Because something does happen. We all make it a call and response song. And it’s x- rated! Billy Idol songs came on 10 years after they were hits and they would go down the same way. Still do. I really think Billy Idol is the actual sound of the 80s. In movies, on the dance floor, at private parties, at the cottage, gravel pit parties, anything… his songs got everyone up and participating. And you only have half the story without us singing our part. If you are ever lucky enough get surrounded by your generation X friends when this comes on after , especially after a few drinks, you will see what happens. Now imagine every single one of your friends and all the people you went to school with going nuts on the dance floor, singing half in the bag at the same time. Yes this happened at weddings too! The funnest stuff ever. Like I said, oh the memories!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 I have been one sick puppy and I just got up and danced and I sang out my part of the call/response to this song even though yesterday I could barely walk. That’s what this song does but you gotta be there to know what I’m talking about.
Tommy James had a few songs that got covered and became a hit a second time. This one, "Crimson and Clover" by Joan Jett and "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany.

Back in the 80s my friends and I would meet up on Friday night somewhere. Usually a bAr to decide what we’d do that night: club, movie, etc. This one Friday there were about 20 of us. We met at a little bar in Andalusia, just outside of Philly. I wasn’t in the mood for clubbing and there wasn’t anything I wanted to see in theaters. So after about 10 of us had arrived….I dropped some money in the jukebox…and this was the very first song I played. Needless to say we spent the rest of that Friday at the Andalusia Tavern, and with the owner’s permission, moved tables around to make a dance floor. We had a total blast dancing to Billy Idol, and other great 80s rock, until near closing time. And we turned that usual dead Friday night into a good night for the bar…and bartender, too! Anytime is a good time for some BILLY,
Guys there’s so much to say about this number one I’m sure you’ve been told 100 times by now this is an homage to Tommy James, Tommy James, and the Shondells. Huge influence on rock music for decades this song which number one for Tommy James and the Shondells in the UK. And Billy really really knocked it out of the park with this cover. I remember in the 90s and the 2000s this song was still being played in clubs. I would be surprised if it’s not still being played in clubs now. The backing vocals are incredible. And I think really everybody was fanboy/fangirling for Billy Idol. We were all in it for that YEAH! First thing I ever saw Billy Idol do after his punk days when he was trying to go mainstream was a ridiculous song called “hot in the city”. It was so cheesy and bubblegum. But… It really made me want to hear more. Next thing I know, rebel yell is everywhere! It was a great time to be alive.
Tommy James was in a hotel room one night and a flashing neon sign was aggravatingly flooding his room. He whips open the curtain and sees the Mutual Of New York building. Hence Mony Mony was creatively sparked.
Played this in pretty much every weekend warrior rock band I was in during the 80s & early 90s . And yeah, the crowd response during the verse made the song. " Hey everybody get laid, get F'd."
Remember seeing him on this tour... and when he hit this song and the crowd started to sing "hey m@@@erf@@ker get l@id get f@@ked" and they stopped playing to listen to the crowd... everytime in the opening verses when he said Mony Mony the crowd answered. Was so much fun... a blast from the past
This was a remake of a 60’s classic by Tommy James & The Shondells. It kind of had a tongue in cheek feel, Billy Idol had a brooding tough guy image, it was a twist to see him do a bubblegum pop song. I think it was an album filler that somehow became a hit. At the same time another punk rocker Joan Jett had a hit with Crimson and Clover from the catalogue of Tommy James and The Shondells
The best way to experience Billy's Mony Mony is live with the call and response from the crowd. IYKYK
Thinking the exact same thing! LOL!! Writing it out here doesn't hit the same!
Yes!
I disagree...sitting around a stage with a fistful of singles is the BEST way.

I remember bar rooms erupting during the chorus it was crazy. Lol
Anytime is a good time for some BILLY,
GenX hears that thumping bass intro and collectively starts yelling “LAID!! GET LAID GET FUCKED!!” repeatedly for 5 minutes
Cool, another Billy Idol song. I know Andy's a big fan of Idol's.Hey, gents, it would be great if you two could video a song when singing Karaoke! 🎶
To get your total hit of Billy you have to see the live version He tears the roof off !
Tommy James was in a hotel room one night and a flashing neon sign was aggravatingly flooding his room. He whips open the curtain and sees the Mutual Of New York building. Hence Mony Mony was creatively sparked.
Tommy's version is best 😮
no
It's a really good, updated for the times (80s) cover. Tommy James and the Shondells 1968.
Next Idol awesomeness.. Got To Be A Lover
Played this in pretty much every weekend warrior rock band I was in during the 80s & early 90s . And yeah, the crowd response during the verse made the song. " Hey everybody get laid, get F'd."
Original was pretty rocking too, Tommy James & The Shondells!
Remember seeing him on this tour... and when he hit this song and the crowd started to sing "hey m@@@erf@@ker get l@id get f@@ked" and they stopped playing to listen to the crowd... everytime in the opening verses when he said Mony Mony the crowd answered. Was so much fun... a blast from the past
this song was a blast at the skating rink
Big ups A&A for such a great reaction.
We used to sing….”get laid, get f*cked”…on the dance floor!!! God I loved the 80’s!!!! ❤️❤️🥰🥰
You guys missed the live version! Cmon man!
That's a banger!!!
Billy's cover was released much earlier than Vital Idol. 1981 actually. A live version was released later and hit the charts.
Every wedding reception in the late 80s and early 90s!
Has anyone done a remake of Crystal Blue Persuasion?
The most “square” mouth in rock and yes, he kills it !
I used to sing this to my granddaughter, Simone. We call her Moni.
Definitely a great cover of a fun song.
Dancing with myself, flesh for fantasy, hot in the city, and more you have not done yet...
The live version makes the studio version sound like a demo
Either version is pure adrenaline- it is my ‘get up and get going” music. Yeah 🙌🏻
Andy talking about Raunch, hahaha! It's in the live performance!
Dancing with myself!
Along with his other greats like Dancing With Myself, White Wedding, Hot In The City, etc, I've always loved Eyes Without A Face.
Thank you, Andy! Thank you, Alex! 💎
Weird al did the best possible rendition, hilarious and the one I still sing today.
