The name Billy Idol comes from a play on words from his school days. One of his teachers used to say, "There's Billy sitting idle again" (not doing his work). It stuck and he became Billy Idol in later years.

Billy Idol was hopping around the stage, fell off, and landed on top of me at a college show. He hopped up and lifted me up back up to my feet, took my hand, and hopped around on floor with us. We lifted him back to the stage. I don't think he ever missed a beat or stopped performing.

I was a bouncer in a bar when this song was out. One of our jobs was to go down into the basement and fetch beer cases out of the cooler and throw them up through the trap door behind the bar to the bartender. The dance floor was right above there, and when this song came on everyone in the bar jammed onto the dance floor and did a kind of hop dance that would make the whole floor above your head flex in a terrifying manner! Also, there was a point in the chorus that everyone would shout "HEY! Get la*d, get fu**ed!" No idea when or where that started but everyone in the bar shouted it.

Really Good. So after the song is done, I go ask the DJ who that was, and he said Billy Idol. And I was like the "Eyes Without A Face" guy?? Billy Idol’s original 1981 remake of this 1968 chart-topper by Tommy James & the Shondells made little impact on US radio, reaching #7 on the US Bubbling Under Chart.
In late 1987, Idol’s live performance of the song shot the song all the way back to #1 in the US. It also reached #2 in New Zealand and #13 in Switzerland.
That year, a trend began in dance clubs around the US where the crowd would shout back obscenities during the silence in the song’s verses, differing in various regions. One popular variation of the callback is: “Hey everybody, get laid, get fucked!”

"Mony Mony" was credited to Tommy James, Bo Gentry, Ritchie Cordell and Bobby Bloom.[1] The song's title was inspired by Tommy James' view of the "M.O.N.Y." sign atop the Mutual of New York Building on the New York City skyline from his Manhattan apartment.[1] As James said in a 1995 interview in Hitch magazine:
True story: I had the track done before I had a title. I wanted something catchy like "Sloopy" or "Bony Maroney," but everything sounded so stupid. So Ritchie Cordell and I were writing it in New York City, and we were about to throw in the towel when I went out onto the terrace, looked up and saw the Mutual of New York building (which has its initials illuminated in red at its top). I said, "That's gotta be it! Ritchie, come here, you've gotta see this!" It's almost as if God Himself had said, "Here's the title." I've always thought that if I had looked the other way, it might have been called "Hotel Taft".[4]
"Mony Mony" was the only song by the group to reach the top 20 in the United Kingdom; it reached No. 1 in the UK,[1] No. 3 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on WLS, two years to the day after the similarly sounding title "Monday, Monday" reached No. 1 there. A music video was made featuring the band performing the song amidst psychedelic backgrounds. A decade and a half later, it would receive some play on MTV.[4]

Need to do Dancing with Myself next. In the breaks in the verse of Mony Mony everybody would yell ‘get laid get f#@ked’ when this would play in the clubs in ‘87. Everyone wanted to be part of the Billy Idol Tribe. You are singing the song even part way through the first listen. He has some kind of charisma that makes us all belong. Suggesting Wedding Singer again, he has a couple of brief appearances. And he is still rocking today, travelling with a guitar player. I wonder if it is the same one. Another wake up song is "I don't Wanna Stop," _ Ozzy Osborne.

“Mony Mony” was definitely a radio hit, but it was also like, standard repertoire for high school pep bands to play in the stands during football games. Since it’s been over 20 years since I was in marching band, I have no idea what pep music they’re playing now but this was definitely one that everyoneee played to get the crowd hyped at games. Idk if that’s where the “Yeah” part is familiar to Amber, but that could be it.

  • @Shrykespeare
    @Shrykespeare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The guitarist is Steve Stevens, whom you may remember from the Rebel Yell video. He's been with Billy since the beginning, and is STILL part of his band! Billy actually recorded this in 1981 on his first album, BEFORE he hit the big time with "White Wedding". He re-released it in 1987, and it hit #1. At some point, you should check out the original version by Tommy James and the Shondells. For more Billy, I recommend "To Be a Lover" next. Other bangers include "Hot in the City", "Dancing With Myself", "Flesh For Fantasy", "Don't Need a Gun", and his cover of The Doors' song, "L.A. Woman". He also put out a four song EP in 2021, and the video for "Bitter Taste" is tremendous. Love me some Billy!

Background singers swiveling their hips and tossing their 8o's hair to the ruthless pulse as Billy and Steven throw down in the ring. Nothing better. And Billy has said it gave him a chance to do his best Elvis lipcurl as he pleads for your love. Do yourselves a favor and react to this Vital Idol song before anyone else finds this perfect encapsulation of 8o's magic.
One more thing. Tommy James says the title of this song comes from the Mutual Of New York sign he saw outside his window when he got the idea for the song. Tbe initials MONY MONY wrapped around the corner of the top of the building.

Tommy James ( He wrote the song) looked out his hotel window in New York and there was a giant “ Mutual of New York” ( MONY) neon sign. That’s where mony came from.

For me, this song was great also because of the 'audience participation." Beside the normal repeat back lyrics, there were "UNOFFICIAL" lyrics we all knew, which we'd add. Just like in other songs like in Sweet Caroline (so good, so good) or Rudolph, the Red-nose Reindeer (like a light bulb). For many of us those extra lyrics made the song:
Billy: Here she comes now sayin' Mony Mony
Crowd: "Hey mother f*cker, get laid get f*ck'd!"
Billy: Shoot 'em down, turn around, come on Mony
Crowd: "Hey mother f*cker, get laid get f*ck'd!"
Billy: Hey! She give me love and I feel alright now
Crowd: "Hey mother f*cker, get laid get f*ck'd!"
    and then the chorus...
    Real chous:
Cause you make me feel (like a pony)
    So good (like a pony)
    So good (like a pony)
    So good (Mony Mony)
    My chorus:
Cause you make me feel (f'in horny)
    So good (f'in horny)
    So good (f'in horny)
    So good (f'in horny)

In the south back the day it was "Hey get laid, get F##ked" added to the chorus. No MF. Lol

There is also a kid friendly version- "hey rubber duckie get wet get soaked". For when it was played (a staple) at family weddings. Lol

The way the "crowd participation" went where I'm from was split in 2 parts:
      1 Side: HEY!
      2 Side: SAY WHAT!?
Both Sides: GET LAID! GET FU*C%&D!

Weird that I've never heard this until now. I remember when the song came out.

YASS! Came to say this, but we'd answer: Hey, hey what, get laid, get f'ed.

Definitely a great song! Original is great too. Back when Billy’s version came out, we used to sing dirty words in between his vocals at the clubs.

Yes this was a radio hit… Along with being played every weekend in bars and at wedding receptions. When the band started playing this, the dance floor was packed.

Lol....I LOVED Billy Idol as a teenager! Into my twenties too. I got to see him in Concert! Love the English accent! Had several records....his pictures all over my Lime green bedroom walls! Lol....My parents would roll their eyes when he came on MTV and I would see him and say "Oh! Can we Please watch this!!"
White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Eyes Without a Face, Dancing with Myself, Flesh for Fantasy, Catch my fall, Hot in the City, Cradle of Love, Sweet Sixteen, Blue Highway, are all songs that I liked. Lol

Saw Billy Idol and his band twice -- even though he was past his prime -- and I still list them as two of the most fun concerts I've ever attended. Smiled through the whole show.
