All your advice is so true. The biggest thing I have found is to NOT sign up to lots of website/youtube learning platforms. Choose one, like Dylane (of course) and stick with just that one ONLY. It is very overwhelming receiving heaps of emails alerting you of new videos etc.

That is true Wendy. There are so many platforms now that it's hard to stay focused. Thank you for choosing me 🥰

I sign up for multiple because I can’t learn a language solely from one source. So I use Duolingo, books, iTalki, music, tv shows/movies, podcasts, and TH-cam vlogs/grammar videos. I learn the fastest when I diversify. I use a textbook for structure on what I should learn next and then make my study plans.

The reason I want to learn French by myself is flexibility and timing. I want to take online class, but my busy life doesn't permit me so I choose to learn on my own term.

Bonjour Dylane! In my humble opinion, you can improve your English pronunciation significantly by learning the dark L. In English, the letter L at the end of a word is pronounced very differently from the letter L at the beginning of a word. That’s called the difference between dark L and light L. To pronounce the dark L, one raises the back of the tongue, as if pronouncing ‘ou’. There are some tutorials on youtube about how to pronounce the dark L.😊😊😊

I was watching turkish series every night for 3 months and as well the grammar on TH-cam and after 3 months i was able to understand everything and started to speak slowly and for practicing speaking, i always speak to myself and now i have some turkish friends they tell me that how can you speak so well turkish without going to school?😊 Now i learn french and I'm using the same method and i hope one day i can speak it very well.

I was going to post this just as a reply but it turned into a new comment.
I chose Dylane at first because she teaches in English, her videos were easy to follow even for a complete beginner, and her workbooks are excellent. I did try others but found that most tried to teach in French, did not have a comprehensive total "plan", or were aimed at intermediate level students. Her speaking practise videos are exceptional, as are the pronunciation series.
I also find dictation exercises very useful to improve listening skill. It helps to have to write, not just listen. I think "Learn To French" has the best of these.
Learning numbers is a special case....the only way seems to be just practise, practise, practise. Again, writing is more effective than just listen and forget. There are lots of "dictèe nombres" videos available.
I don't agree entirely with Dylane in saying that a beginner should start with pronunciation. I think the first step is to try to get a basic understanding of grammar to be able to make some sense of the words you are learning. For this I used Dylane's grammar course. I didn't try any others to check if it is the "best" but I think it is very very good.
And I am finding Google translate to be very useful. I may not be the "best" (see my other comment), but it is free, readily available. I set my tablet up split screen so that the text I am working from is on one screen and the reading of my fumbling pronunciation shows up on the other. Work from a text that also has a speech example, then pause and repeat until Google translate can understand the words.
(Update) I tried installing immersion translate because the app info said it could access chatgpt but (1) apparent that was misinformation and (2) I could not get it to actually work on my android tablet. It just kept looping trying to install a browser plugin. I also had a look at chatgpt but the "free trial" is only for three days and it is not free. The money would be better spent on another of Dylane's workbooks.

Salut Dylane, wonderful advice as always. At 2:53 when you say you have a "photographic memory" I'm wondering if you really mean that you are a visual learner. That is, writing things down, making little drawings and charts helps to cement things in your memory.
A "photographic memory" means you can look at the text of a book once, take a perfect snap-shot in your mind, and then be able to recall everything perfectly word for word and images too. It would be rare and amazing if you do have such a memory, but then again you are a pretty amazing person.👍

Took me a long time to figure out how I like to learn and what kind of content I like. Hint: just doubling down on Duolingo isn't enough. Schedule a video lesson with a teacher/tutor to give you an idea of what it takes to learn how to talk and understand what people say, that'll orient your studying

    Hello Dylane
I am wondering why no one ever mentions taking advantage of Google translate when they are suggesting resources for helping to learn french?
I realize it might be a problem if one relies on it instead of actually learning to work independently but I am finding it to be very useful for testing my progress......for instance, your "French Speaking Practice" videos are very good but because they are just a video, there is no way of checking to see if my pronunciation is adequate. However, if I speak into Google translate using the "Transcribe" mode, it will instantly write what it thinks I have said. I can then then try again until I get it correct.
When trying to write something original, I can compose it in french, copy it into Google translate, and it will show me where what I have tried to write is actually coming out as nonsense.

    • @TheperfectfrenchwithDylane
      @TheperfectfrenchwithDylane  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Google Translate is not actually that great at translating, especially long sentences. Chat GPT is much better and on top of that you can ask it why the structure of the sentence is this way.

Dylane, une question s'il vous plaît. You mentioned knitting, I enjoy also. Can you recommend a Knitting podcast spoken in French? I can only find one on TH-cam. What is better - to learn French from a French native or from a person whose first language is English?

I learn from others You could say is shadowing. I have learned English in England working with English people. I had basic knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation from school. But I couldn't communicate or understand full sentences.
