I wonder if little Bobby could have been saved? To externally open the egg membrane. Not sure if this could have been done in a way that wouldn’t stress the others
Hi, thanks for watching the video! Little bobby was very tiny, in fact, 5 of him could fit on a grain of rice. Cutting him out of the egg membrane would have been very risky. I made a special video that looks at this issue. Please check it out and tell me if you think I did the right thing. th-cam.com/video/cMw2VyFsqCc/w-d-xo.html
@@TheDave333 I knew they were tiny, but didnt really understand the magnitude until I saw the needle tip looking so dull under magnification in the linked video. Regardless, it was interesting to see that we could actually help them out.
@ PegLegGreg No worries! Your comment did not seem judgmental at all. The video is sad, and it does make some people cry. My wife cried the first time she watched it!!! Human emotions always complicate the picture, and nature works, so well because she's indifferent. :-)
We started with eight guppies from my kiddo's elementary science class...and now a year later, we have more than 30! I shared your video with my family and EVERYONE was fascinated. It led to a good age appropriate conversation about reproductive biology. Kiddo was a bit sad about little Bobby, but nevertheless, grateful that Ms Wanda allowed us a close-up view of how guppy babies are born.
Thank you for watching the video. If you add aquatic plants (real or artificial) to the tank, more babies will survive. Plants that float at the surface are especially helpful. Have a beautiful day . . . :-)
I know that this is a silly question, but I have a few pregnant guppies in my tank. One looks like she may only be a week or two away from having her fry. Is there any way to intervene if something like that happens- where they get stuck in the egg? Could you use a small needle to break a small hole in the membrane, to give it a weak spot so when they wiggle they can get out? I know that theyre very tiny, and pretty crammed in there.
Hi, thanks for watching the video. Surgical interventions are risky due to the small size of the "patient." A more simple method, and less risky method is to put the "egg" in a small cup containing tank water and then rapidly swish the egg around in the water. Killifish keepers with similar trouble will put eggs in a small vial of tank water, seal the vial and then put it in their pocket. As they walk around, the vial is constantly shaken and stirred . All of the jostling around can sometimes free the embryo from the egg membrane.
You know it's funny. I recently lost my Siamese fighting fish and felt awful...but then I watch these videos and am reminded that things in nature happen that are sad as well...like mom eating baby to spare him from more pain. Not funny in haha...funny as in well just life cycle....thanks for the amazing video.

Sadly my females only give birth to a handful of babies. Nothing like when I used to keep them years ago and I'd get 40-50 fry. However I haven't witnessed the babies being born in this guppy tank I have now. Perhaps I need to add some live plants, especially floating ones where they can hide. Although I have yet to witness any fry being devoured it would make the babies feel more secure.
This takes me back to having my own 2 children, being a stay at home mom, being bipolar, with anxiety and panic attacks having my fish tanks was my non- pharmaceutical way to tranquility! I became successful in breeding fish even Angel fish but never accomplishing any fry. as the female decides if the male will be a good daddy she will not eat the eggs if he's not daddy of the year she will eat the eggs, but I miss having my tanks and 1 day will have them again they helped greatly with the problems of my mental health issues thanks for letting us experience your experience!

No, it does not seem to. Most animals have a pain-free birth, it's only humans that seem to suffer. It's our upright posture that causes all of the trouble. . .
Thanks for the amazing video. I have a fish tank with 4 adult guppies (I think only one male left) 3 Neon tetras (all that are left from 17 that I bought three years ago) 3 yoyo loaches. In all these years I had not seen my guppies giving birth. I just assumed that the yoyos ate all the fry. To my amazement, a couple of weeks ago I noticed a fry. At first I didn't think he would make it beyond few hours. But it's been many days since, and he has grown a lot. The adult guppies are no longer a danger for him, and he spends most of the time near the surface (so the yoyos can't get him either). Yesterday morning I noticed a new very young fry. I was excited about him, but after an hour I couldn't find him any longer. And now after watching this video I find out that they usually give birth to at least 20! do you think they were all eaten? the tank is heavily plantated, so I wonder if some might be hiding there?
Hello and thanks for watching the video. There are several possibilities. . . Since the tank is heavily planted, I am assuming that the fry have plenty of places to hide. (Plants near the surface are the most helpful, because baby guppies like to hide near the surface.) So, the adult guppies are probably not eating them. I'm not sure about the loaches, though they don't seem fast enough to catch guppy fry. If you have a hang-on-back filter the fry might be getting sucked into the filter through the filter intake. If you don't have an intake sponge filter over the intake pipe, then that might be where all of the babies are going. Check the filter reservoir at the back of the tank. Some of the fry may have survived. As a quick fix for the problem, you can put a piece of nylon pantyhose over the intake pipe to keep the fry out of the filter. Here's another possibility you may want to consider. th-cam.com/video/hZJRXQJgpkg/w-d-xo.html

Thank you for watching the video. I think that nature is cool too. I always learn something new by sitting still and observing how things work. I have many many more videos, that are even better than this one. Please take a look. :-)
Poor little Bobby. I have a guppy (Frankie) that is pregnant right now and this video helped me a lot. She is due to give birth quite soon and I'm hoping to be there when she does so I can save them from being eaten. How did you know exactly how many babies there would be?
I had no many idea how many babies she would have. The information n the video was provided after she was done giving birth. If you buy several plastic aquarium plants and put them in the tank, they will provide hiding places for the babies, and less of them will be eaten.
*Imagine a human recording you with a HD camera while you give birth*- Also poor Bobby!! Hope he Rest In Peace and have a better second life! Rest in ☮️
Thanks for watching the video. Breeding guppies is as simple as getting a couple of females, and one male together in a tank. Provide them with warm, clean water, and lots of plants for the newborn babies to hide in. If they don't have places to hide, the adults will eat probably eat most of them. The guppies will take care of the rest. The babies don't get stuck for long and come out on their own. No help needed. The mistake most beginners make is that they overfeed their fish, and then the water gets too dirty. So, feed small amounts several time per day.
I clicked on this because I think nature is cool and love seeing animals and educating myself. This video not only fulfilled all expectations but also took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. I love it.

No, it does not seem to. Most animals have a pain-free birth, it's only humans that seem to suffer. It's our upright posture that causes all of the trouble. . .
@@TheDave333 So there's no pain? That's insane.
Omggg that was so cute their little heart beats😭😭😭

Was little Bobby Girl or boy?
Bobby did not live long enough to be able to tell. I gave it the name "Bobby" because it works for both a girl or a boy.
Very fascinating to see how fish giving birth.
Most people think that fish only lay eggs. . .

I watched this video because I think nature is cool and love seeing animals and educating myself. This video not only fulfilled all expectations but also took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. I love it.
Thank you for watching the video. I think that nature is cool too. I always learn something new by sitting still and observing how things work. I have many many more videos, that are even better than this one. Please take a look. :-)
This video is really helpful. My guppy just gave birth to 20+ fries..am browsing ard the net to learn how to care for them.
Happy to help. :-)
Heavenly rest Bobby.❤❤❤Gone, but not forgotten.

A brilliant video, I enjoyed every second. Wonderful camerawork and informative and knowledgeable narrator. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words. Have a beautiful day!
i really enjoyed the video without any sound .. was very intriguing
Awesome, thank you!
Wow I love your vids. It was so cool to see how guppy are born. If you read this tell me if you have ever done fancy guppy breed. R.I.P Bobby:(
Hi! Yes I have bred fancy guppies. I plan to do more videos on guppies soon.

The Dave Exactly!
R.I.P little Bobby have a good life in fish heaven
I loved the video. Could you give me some information on how to breed them and what to do when a baby gets stuck while coming out.
The Dave Thx I will keep that in mind. 😊
