Our first clownfish babies

- In early 2017, with a two year old tank of 650l, we saw our clownfish pair laying eggs. They are an interesting pairing of a black ocellaris and a normal orange percula, so we decided to see if we could raise a batch of clownfish babies. With help from Jens and Jesper from Sjöfartsmuseet in Gothenburg, we got the necessary rotifer and phytoplankton culture. A bunch of coke bottles, air-pumps and LED lights later we had feeding culture ready. Two months and a lot of work later we have a school of ~25 thriving juvenile clownfish!
Those lil babies hanging out in the fake anemone was the cutest thing Ive ever seen.

I watch my fry learn to swim after 168 hours. They’re born as literal yolks with tails and a half-formed head and I have to watch the lil things until they get a face and drag themselves off the floor. They have to get shipped off after two months.

That’s just because they weren’t the same variety of Clownfish as Nemo but Nemo’s variety does produce red eggs.
Actually there's a bigger lie.. In real life the biggest clownfish is always female. When she dies the second biggest fish turns female so when Nemos mom died his father should have turned into his new mom lol
Watching this gives me a feeling of caring for it. When I watch something grow up, seeing it becomes different than if I just saw it fully grown. Kind of like raising something. You can’t help but smile and root for the little guys. Hell I shed a tear just watching these little guys. Something that small.. in our big hands and big world.

That Black Clown fish is beautiful.

cue the nemo references! actually went to the great barrier reef and failed to find a single clown fish. The guys that took us out there said that clownfish became more endangered after the movie because all the kids now want one.... irony?
Certainly is ironic. But clownfish are also much more commonly bred in captivity these days, so it is now hopefully rare to see wild caught specimens in the fish shops.

About a month or so before Finding Dory came out our Petco put signs all over the saltwater tanks that said:
"Blue Tangs and other saltwater fish like Dory are not recommended for beginners. Talk with us to determine which fish is best for you."
I asked about the signs and they explained what happened with Finding Nemo, and now they won't sell any saltwater fish to ANYONE unless the person knows what they're doing. One associate told me a woman came in with her son and got pissed he wouldn't sell her a "Nemo fish" to put in a fish bowl...full of fresh tap water.

That was a fake anemone. It said so right in the video. It was a spiky rubber ball. The anemone was in the beginning when the parents laid the eggs.

Thanks. I just watched a couple of your videos and they were great. If I were to speculate about why someone might not like my video, it would be that it is slow paced. I think I could have made it much less detailed and focused only on short, cool shots, but personally, I liked making a record of every stage of the clownfish development, and am pleased that so many people have enjoyed watching it, so clearly I'm not the only one that likes that level of detail.

Eleyna, every fish species is different, and I only know about clownfish breeding. But you can find out what to do the same way I did, and just google it. When I googled for clownfish breeding I got a lot of good, detailed instructions. You could try the same for betta breeding, and betta compatibility.

Wow such incredible fottage of this monumental occasion! I am just astonished at how much care and time it took for you to makethis happen with all of those tanks of Phyto, and rotifers, etc. I think it would be amazing to see the fish watch them being born ☺️. Such a great and loving video, it doesn't seem like the thing to make you cry but the music and the amazing footage really did it for me. Thats just amazing how quick they grow up from being a yellow ball to having eyes, and a heart, and then leaving the rock, then getting mouths and then and you can see the colors starting to form.

The oreo one was a male, here is a cool tip i learnt years ago... the male clownfish are smaller than the female clown fish
I had a look at the phantom, and it is cool. On further searching I see the 'Black Photon' looks a lot like our babies, and it turns out to have very similar parents. In the case of the 'Black Photon', the parents are a 'Black Darwin Ocellaris' and a 'Black Onyx Percula'. So a bit more black than with our case, but still a hydrid between two sub-species. I wonder if ours will get as dark as the 'Black Photon'. The bigger ones are almost as dark already, I think. See www.seaandreef.com/marine-ornamental-fish/clownfish/black-photon

Must be a great experience, I have never been able to collect the frys and raise them. My clowns spawns regularly and its great to watch them. I have just uploaded a video too. I would like to raise some in the future. My tank is pretty busy atm thou.. :)
We tried to collect the fry for five spawnings in a row before we finally succeeded. Our first spawning we got one larva, the next four we got zero every time, and then suddenly we got 40. I think this was not due to a change in our technique, but more related to a combination of luck, timing and the nature of that particular batch. I suspect the earlier ones were either hatching very much later (after we went to bed), or were being eaten by the parents once they failed to hatch (for whatever reason).
Your videos are great. Love the time-lapse. We did that with an anemone digging itself into the sand overnight once. Your corals are also lovely!
Regarding a busy tank, we needed two separate tanks to raise the clownfish, one 10l for the first month and a 30l for the next few months. The young never got to be in the 650l display tank except for the first 30min to an hour after hatching while we were collecting them.

I think this is the highest peak for any aquarium owner, which is making clownfish or any saltwater fish breed; and this tells me about a highly skilled person

That is amazing! The clownfish at my husbands office laid tons of eggs (twice) but where told it is very difficult to raise the babies. I see now why!

Lol the music out my dogs to sleep. They were playing and barking and as soon as I put this video on, they calmed down and fell asleep
Ahrianna Macias I always get a horrible panic attack if I put on loud music to wake up. The panic attacks result in really bad sweating, rapid heart beat, and dizziness. I always have to wake up to calm music since it’s my only option.
@@melanieh.3091 That's a anxiety attack not a panic attack. Panic attacks are random while anxiety attacks are not.
I count about 20 that made it from the clutch. Man, mother nature is tough.

I have to stay away from a clownfish they are poisonous!!! Well they look cute when they're babies. I never actually known that clownfish were poisonous. I seen them and I always seen their poison. Adorable little cute clownfish babies. One time I saw clownfish laying eggs. Wow!

Clownfish are not poisonous. Many marine fish are, but not these ones. They do live with anemones, which are poisonous, but only slightly for humans. I've obviously touched anemones many times, and it just causes a mild itch.
