Smooth Criminal is one of Michael's most under appreciated songs on the US charts. It was barely top ten in its first run. It has since gone double platinum if sales. It is one of those rare cases where it over saturated the market with Moonwalker videos and MTv that people didn't need to buy it to hear it all the time.
Charles, you"re definitively an amaézing bass player, maybe the strongest i ever seen. I usualy don't comment or post after a video, cause i'm french and my englsh sucks. But i cannot give up this post without wrtiting this. You're a source of inspiratrion for me.Please continue to make me dream, i would be happy when i attempt 10% of youir bass skills. Many thanks again for this nice cover !
The tap sections you do are so dope. Love the one you do on Smooth Criminal (Tiptoe criminal) and the one here on Beat It. It's like it's own mini-interlude
This is such a cool concept, awesome video! Only note, Van Halen only played the solo. Every other guitar part was done by the highly underrated and perpetually talented Steve Lukather from Toto, including those funky fills. [Edit: Lukather also played the bass on the recording, as well]
As normal humans, we just want to revel vicariously and in awe of the great natural and practiced talents of those who excel at whatever it is they happen to excel at. Thank you for being this person for bass guitar. I believe you truly are the best, subjectively speaking, but, damn, you're so good!
After listening to this MJ must be rejoicing & the heavens resounding with the heavenly piece by Charles. 👍👍👍Kindly come up with a longer version please.
I know it’s great when I start tapping my feet and playing Air Bass!! Shared it with my wife and now she’s been converted to bass as well. Slaptastic!!!
If Eddie or Michael were alive to hear this... they would shit themselves. Your interpetation of the solo section... Bro, that was one of the most incredible things I've ever heard. 10/10 ☁😳☁ Mind. Blown.
Charles, your play style makes me want to buy a bass. It’s very impressive, man. I have a request, if you have the time and desire, of course. There is a game called Toejam & Earl, from sega mega drive. It’s an old one, from 1991. For me, it’s the best bass game soundtrack ever made. It’s nothing complex, but there is something cool about it. Could you make a pro bass version of something of the soundtrack? I would appreciate it. Anyway. Nice job, man. Regards!
Your technique is incredible, but it is not the thing i appreciate the most in your music. I mean, technique is cool but not the goal. What's really amazing is your unique style. You are really an original composer. Keep it up!!
lol i was just thinking about how much i love michael jackson and catching some of his older videos on youtube. he would have fucking loved this no doubt.
You are in my opinion the greatest bass player in the WORLD that I have heard and I have heard many masters behind the instrument, you sir have got it. Congratulation. BAD ASS
I couldn't play like this in a million years, but that hasn't stopped me from trying. I'm slowing your videos down to .50x and stealing all your licks.
Wow it seriously only took me before the first second of the video had even passed to hit like because of that sweet bass appearing out of nowhere gag with the blue puffs
Heyas, Charles. Been watching your videos for a few months, absolutely love your playing and your humor. I wonder if you would consider doing a bass version of Frank Zappa’s “Sofa No. 1” - it’s a beautiful piece; and even though it was written for classical guitar, I can’t imagine it being anything less than magnificent after receiving your attention. Also, anything Michael Hedges? Undoubtedly one of the most creative tap guitarists, and a pioneer in the form…maybe “Aura Muunta” or “Spring Buds”? Or just keep doing what you do. You truly rock, and I’m grateful to hear whatever you do.
This was sooo good! I think our host enjoys rubbing the noses of the 'bass players are failed guitarists' commentators in his skills. Which are tremendous!
Wonder what Curt & Roland make of this. Can’t believe for a second they haven’t seen it. What an amazing video it would be to see them play with Charles providing that track !, someone please make it happen !!!
If _____ was the hardest song in the world 👇🏻
Primus - Is It Luck

Charles you’re my favorite TH-camr! My bass hero! 🫂🥰
I'm really liking this Michael Jackson series you've got going on. I'd like to see you do smooth criminal next.

@@axepagode33626 Yeah, I remember that video. Big production like a mini movie, like Thriller was.
That would be awesome!
Agree!!
Smooth criminal would be hard😂 and let's try speed demon to when we're still at it..
0:23 this slide is SO good
@hhoangg Palm slide?
I am loving this series! Your takes in these classics are impeccable. Cheers!
Thanks!
@@CharlesBerthoud My pleasure!

Truly amazing!
Agreed, he is the cleanest bassist without question to me- accurate and sustained notes at speed, no fake blurrs
That's a quality musician 🎶
your english is pretty good!
A French person praising an Englishman! The 21st century is good
Your english seems fine to me, Google translate?
Legend has it that after Charles has covered a certain amount of Michael Jackson songs he'll be able to moonwalk.
He'll moonslap 😂
with enough michael jackson songs he'll become michael jackson
while playing..
Eventually, when he fingers the E string, he will have played on the G string
The tap sections you do are so dope. Love the one you do on Smooth Criminal (Tiptoe criminal) and the one here on Beat It. It's like it's own mini-interlude
2:08 Dat damn smile
Charles the legendary bassist
I believe Eddie only played the solo. Steve Lukather did most of the other parts, including the lead up to the solo. Or so I have been told.
You're correct. That's exactly how it went!
And greg howe played on the live performances
Correct. Most of the "Thriller" album was basically Toto featuring MJ.
@@ischmidt I knew that, but wasn’t sure about Beat It as there were other session players here and there.
At 1:13 riff gave me goosebumps wow legend Michael Jackson, fucking awesome Charles berthoud
This is such a cool concept, awesome video! Only note, Van Halen only played the solo. Every other guitar part was done by the highly underrated and perpetually talented Steve Lukather from Toto, including those funky fills. [Edit: Lukather also played the bass on the recording, as well]
True story!
@CharlesBerthoud it's true! That guitar riff was done by Steve Lukather, an awesome guitarist! Van Halen created the solo!
I didn't know that, nice!
Hes trolling us...
He knows we want that juicy EVH solo, and we know he can play it.
The coolest bass piece in 2021 so far😍
Agreed.
I would've loved to see the van halen solo played on bass 😢
same, shame he didn't do it
Yeah. He called Lukather Van Halen.
@@rumpledxkn easy mistake to make
@@hughjarrse Maybe for us mere mortals. I expect more from Charles, DAMNIT!
I'm sure he'll do a sole solo for beat it

Dude, that was pure fire ... Especially No. 7 & 8 ... I can listen to this slap all day. Keep up good work
We need SLAPCHAEL TAPSON Playing ROCK WITH YOU
Oh Yeah!
actually Steve Lukather of Toto recorded bass and guitar on the Beat It track, van halen did play the solo however.
Every single time he just rips the meanest bass solo you've ever heard and it surprises me each time.
I never thought I would love bass this much, everything you do is so good ! you even influenced my guitar style (more taping).
After listening to this MJ must be rejoicing & the heavens resounding with the heavenly piece by Charles. 👍👍👍Kindly come up with a longer version please.
Charles, love your channel. It was Steve Lukather that played the rhythm guitar on Beat it. Eddie only played the solo.
Its especially amazing that david sounds so good in an alleyway with no fancy recording equipment or anything
this could've been called," trying to beat beat it".
Just tap it
I didn't see that second beat wtf
or beating the crap out of beat it
Ha
I'm starting to see that wear mark just below the neck is slowly (or quickly) starting to expand.....oh yeah, killer job....

I'm surprised that for 2 you didn't go with "Michael Slapson" instead. IT WAS RIGHT THERE!
Seriously though, awesome video and playing as usual.

Charles, congratulations...I'll write the obvious, you have the differential of talent to play the bass...great work....
I don't play bass but you're my fav musician on TH-cam ❤️
You are truly brilliant. I am 48 and just started learning 6 months ago
Can we have a series where you go into a guitar store and just shred the bass and film the worker’s reactions?
Some of that reminded me of the bassist for Yanni when he did the “Live at the Acropolis” album
“The rain must fall” is my favorite.
Fierabracci was his name.
Charles: pretends that the note is difficult to play in the beginning
Me: we all know that u gonna play it easily u bastard 🤣🤣
You’ve inspired me so much to carry on on my music path. Thanks
DAmAGE 5 string bass solo? I have never seen anyone do it and it looks like a great way to come back to tuning experiments!

However, as mentioned by others, the guitar riff was played by the great Steve Lukather.
Van Halen played the solo.
