i don't know what is a harder truth to live with: that this is an unironically amazing version of Barbie Girl, or that Barbie Girl is an unironically enjoyable song to begin with
I love Aqua. Their music is generally just good energy.
Yeah real talk I’ve kind of had it stuck in my head my whole life
Aqua’s songs are pretty good for a pop song (mostly than what we have now). My fave from them is “Turn Back Time”, it showcased their other side that they could also produce a decent ballad.
I can live with both truths pretty well
No downsides here. Also, is that a tea cozy in your picture?
Damn. This version of Barbie Girl just made you the dirtiest, cleanest, meanest bass player in the world. That was insane skill and effort you put into that. The piano variations was also incredible!
I loved the harpsichord variations, too!

This is fucking dope. I was in my teens when this song was released. It was unbelievably annoying and pretty much a joke to anyone not in the club rolling. That fucking bass just brought back some peaks and valleys bro. They owe you royalties from this point on!

That transcription at 0:30 cracked me up! Seven flats marked on the key signature, then most of the notes have flats or sharps marked on them too. The 173/64 time signature is the icing on the cake!

I was a bassist for much of my younger life, but then I went the get married and have 6 kids route. This video is the first one I’ve ever heard from you, and I kid you not, I had to play it from beginning to end twice in a row to soak it all in. I am now on my 3rd listen through as I write this. Please don’t ever stop existing.
I picked up the bass I put down thirty years ago, then I found Charles. When one of these vids pops up in my feed, and I’m wondering whether to click or pass, I click and my mind is blown.

Always getting in a good mood with these song and now in a musically challenging version: Wow, perfection!
I love Charles' classical foundations. It even comes through in his bass playing. He has a very clean, technical style where every note is articulated.
Totally agree. No faking, no ghosting notes, every note perfect even in the very fast passages. Wow.
"they LIKE the wrong notes" lol
Bass guitar playing is often unsung and much because it is often much more simplified and usually anyone who can play guitar at an intermediate level or less, can pick up a bass and start playing. But to your point, it can be incredibly complex and extremely difficult. It's just that the majority of what we usually hear is so dumbed down by comparison. Although even much of that is actually harder to play than it sounds. This dude is undoubtedly Boss Level!
My orchestration teacher plays bass in the studios. One of his no-no's when writing for bass is: "simplifying the bass part beyond all interest." This would be the opposite.
Agreed, but the key role of a commercial bassist is grooving in a rhythm section, be it pop, rock, soul, r&b, jazz, salsa, etc. Done 1000 gigs in those genres, all of them live or die on the strength of the bass. In fact, if it's not really grooving, the audience knows it immediately, whether or not they can pinpoint it. Groove first, virtuosity way secondary.
If we could get a full version with extended Johann Sebastian Barbie, I could die happy.
