Back to the cabin build, baby!! (I'm building a cabin on a cliff Chapter 10)

  • Well, can you believe it?!? Can you really believe it?!?!?!? It felt soooo good to finally get back to working on this cabin build, and I am sure many of you are just as excited to see things moving forward. So, welcome back to the CABIN ON A CLIFF series! 🤩
I left my family for about 48 hours to work on this, and it is split into 2 videos - so here is the first portion of the work done. I've made some new friends out there too! 🐭🐭 (and for those who are really wondering and concerned, yes, I will be replacing a bunch of the lumber).
The plot of lumber I'm building with was milled by myself at my home property (1.5-2 hours from the cabin location) with my Woodland Mills HM126 bandsaw mill. I personally hauled all that wood down a 500' steep cliffside (took me 15 hours), but now having the SkyMule zipline, life is much easier transporting materials. I still do carry some things, hiking up and down, but I usually do one large load with the SkyMule.
Thanks for joining me and see you next week!

I´m an older German craftmans building master, and with all my respect, you are doing a great job.
It is almost unbelievebale for me to watch you doing hard work, seeing German girls caring only for their nails and makeup.
And another thing is, that you are free to build a cabin where and how you want it, I would love to do so.
Unthinkable in this overregulated country I´m living in.
It is a pleasure to watch your progress, keep it up.

I subscribe to the motto (?) “if it looks straight/square it is straight/square”. I’m constantly impressed at the way you overcome obstacles like figuring out how to lift that first subframe by yourself. I removed an old 4 inch steel post that was set with nearly 300 pounds of concrete in a 3 foot deep hole by myself. Not because I’m all that strong but because I levered it up 2 inches at a time and scooped dirt under it until the hole was full. Then I used a come-along and more levers to get it up a ramp and onto a trailer to haul off. Leverage and mechanical advantage are your friends they are force multipliers if you will-you do a good job of using that…sometimes you gotta try twice but you eventually get it done. 👍🏻👍🏻

As someone that homesteads and does build projects primarily by himself...oh how I know the struggle. And the time...holy molie, the time. Building jigs and levers just to hold something. The sketchy foot and hand holds to not fall while fastening or positioning a piece.
As you well know it's a journey, not a race...remember that as you go higher. Be intentional.
Check out the variety of simpson ties or timber hardware available...some of which you can make yourself. Consider wind lift...tie into your foundation platform. And use gussets where you can. Diagonal bracing notched into wall framing, attached at the post and floor is hella strong. If you do it on the exterior side it takes up very little insulating room and its flush on the outside so you just side it in.
The number one rule....don't get hurt.
Thanks for the fun vids and keep rockin it!!
    And kill them fkn rats

There are two principle reasons your videos are great, along with many lesser reasons. First you show the struggle of working alone and figuring it out with basic skills but not the all-knowingness of a contractor. For those of us who've actually built on an off grid property, this is the part that we really understand and appreciate. The other reason is that you're a woman; sure - a woman who's as strong as a lot of men, but you bring a certain style and detail to your projects that most guys never think about. It makes me re-look at my projects to think beyond function and a little more about style.

Countersink your lags. Use a spade bit to create a flat spot for the washer to seat on. Notching the beams would be a good idea. You could do fairly deep ones, say 2 inches and it would create another surface for the post to seat into, and won't weaken the beam appreciably. Also gives you a place to drive toe-screws for added strength if you want.
