1961 Tonka Sportsman Truck Restoration

- I purchased this 1961 Tonka Sportsman Truck mid April of 2020 off eBay. When I received it I found that it was in pretty decent shape for its age. The biggest issue was that the tabs for sportsman topper were missing. The truck was also missing, one hubcap, the boat, and the straps. The tailgate was broken on one side, tires were extremely worn down, windshield was broken, whitewalls were dry rotted and the front bumper was dented in. Overall I was thrilled with the condition.
The biggest challenge of this restoration was repairing the topper. I cut replacement tabs from mild steel and shaped them with the grinder. Once welded onto the topper, each weld had to be filed down and smoothed out to match how factory would have been. I was very satisfied with 3 of the 4 replacement tabs and the last tab I will live with.
The only thing that I wasn't thrilled with on this restoration was the powder coat color. I really thought that it was going to be a better match. However, overall I really love how this truck came out.

Nice collection of restored Tonka toys. I purchased many of them in the 1960's for my 2 sons. Now I have two 18 month old great grandsons I get to purchase Tonka, Hot Wheels and Matchbox toy's for.

This was the exact truck I had as a kid, easy to recognize from the pop off topper and the decals. Even the original color tan was the same. A great pleasure to see, a real trip back.
Once again great job.I especially like you replaced the broken tabs on the topper, wouldn't be the same without the boat. Would love to see you redo a semi some time.

The sound of the wheels rolling, those tabs, the sound of the parts going back together... Back in 1964 I was always pulling mine apart and stuff! I would tie a jeep, this truck, an auto transport, and at least one other - all daisy-chained together and run through the yard with them all flipping and rolling over! And up and down the gravel driveway!

I got this Tonka for Christmas of 1962. I was seven. Though it wasn't my favorite Tonka I loved to play in the mud with it. I had a large construction sight in the corner of my back yard. I never completed the dam and electrical generating plant that I worked so hard on. I graduated to Matchbox trucks next.

I didn't even know people were still making the decals that you soak in water. I always wanted the horse van, but my parents said they couldn't afford it. Nice collection.
You can actually make at home on a computer and print it on the Special paper you can get. A guy where I live does it

I have 2 of the sportsman tonka with the original white plastic rowboat and straps that went on top both are in mint condition. One of them has the excellant condition box. I also have one in red and white and another in green and white all original.
