I wonder about the children whom used to play with those toys. Makes one wonder where they are at now. All of those Tonka dump trucks were once prevailent in the bedrooms of young children so long ago. All of the memories attached to these Tonka trucks is something Id love to hear about from the people whom once played with such toys. The stories would be priceless.
My dad has 2 in storage from him and his brothers gifted to him between ages 4 and 7 from this year and close around. This very same one as well... which is how I found this video... and it's in good shape but a lot of the paint has gone he said his younger siblings would have them in their mouths he also has all kinds of medical issues and I have to wonder if these have anything to do with it...
I had a Tonka dump truck as a child and loved it. I don't know where it disappeared to, but I probably still have it. I still remember playing with it in the yard and occasionaly dinging my shins on it. Good times.
1957 Gasoline Truck, original list price: $4.98. The 1958 model came with a hose and reel in the rear compartment. Looks as if it was enjoyed very much, judging by the axle wear to tires and frame. Rare find, beautiful restoration! Noticed a 1962 white roof fleetside. Do believe the only model to be a white roof fleetside would be a Jet Fuel Delivery, from the 1962 Airport service set. Missing its bedside panels and cross rails...very rare!
I understand why some folks prefer the play worm patina on old toys. But when they are badly rusted like this one, a full restoration is the only solution. Great job!
I love the restoration. Having done a couple myself, I realize the time and effort that goes into one. Just for clarification: a truck is not a semi unless it is a truck and trailer. Semi refers to a trailer that has the front supported by the truck. A full trailer has a dolly under the front and is not supported by the truck but pulled by a tongue on the dolly. Hence there were originally full and semi trailers. They were terms used for licensing and meeting state requirements before the Federal laws kicked in. A semi truck is a truck that pulls a semi trailer. The Gasoline tanker that was restored is considered a straight truck.
Lovely restoration of a great toy. I had one, and it had some terrible accidents, that were often firework related. I was fascinated by the old movie 'The Wages Of Fear', and this truck, with a little driver figure in the cab, sitting on a seat made from am old roadsign by my dad, spent a lot of time teetering on bridges made of scrap wood, or being stuck in mud. They don't make toys like they used to, anymore.
Can only say this, you Sir are a true master at craftsmanship. Watching other, so called restorations, of plastic models purposely smashed, is not worth the time. Other previous resto of the mail van, demonstrates the beginning of the end. Some marketing geniuses figured out that they could save a few cents going to plastic chassis. Problem was, when the axle tabs broke off, it went bye bye. No options for repairs. Recently watched a supposed restore, j.g ad to laugh, the tonk was only a mear shell covering brittle plastic. Three quarters of the thing was all injected. No value in restoring, probably costs more than a new one. How they can pretend to be doing good work is beyond my belief. Art is art, that has a significant value in the eyes of the beholder. You are truly an art historian, restoring classic examples if how the founders set out to satisfy the needs if many young people, to open eyes of what can be done. Thank you for letting me rant. One last thing. The cat makes it all the better. Very much loved by its person.
I love your videos. Very well done! The transformations on each of your projects is phenomenal. I appreciate you showing each procedure step by step and not talking throughout. Have you thought about doing a video on how you find your projects, the tools you use, the materials needed, and where you get parts. This would be very helpful for novices like me that because of your channel, might find the confidence to attempt a restoration. It could be done without having a bead blaster or a home powder coating set-up. Many businesses now offer this service, so it could easily be done by someone else. Keep up the great work.
Another sheep and Beaker approved restoration by Chip Channel deserving of an award of excellence. Love the revival of something I used to play with in my childhood ready for another lifetime of admiration.
I wish there was a toy truck restoration channel for people who don't have expensive high-tech equipment. I have a circa1952 SmithMiller Mack L Mobilgas Tanker
What I find impressive most is remembering how it all gets put back together... I'm sure there's a process one just gets used to after doing so many but I just haven't mastered that art. And again, I'm sure there's an easy way to remember but again I'm not privy... Especially some of the electronics restorations Kudos, amazing.
I love watching these things thank you for another video ❤ When you were taking the tires off I noticed the emblem on the door that said Tonka Toys Mound, Minnesota. So I had to TH-cam that... so many videos. A museum and a tour of the actual Factory in 1975 if anyone's interested 👍❤
G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 I have been a subscriber for a while now and you always do a remarkable job restoring these neglected toys sum you would think that there is no way you could restore it and you always prove me wrong and they turn out terrific. It's great how you show how the powder coat bakes in the heater, thank you for the channel and I look forward to watching the next instalment kind regards John

i still have the fire truck from the early 60's. you can hook up a fire hydrent to a garden hose and put out fires.
I grew up to work in a real iron mine with the BIG Tonka trucks. Some of the steel in these trucks undoubtedly came from this mine in Minnesota.

That's awesome, that was my Dads hey day driving truck. 1950's-1980's.

If you have trouble remembering which parts go where, you can always take pictures before and after removing parts. Hope this helps!

Your painting skills are awesome and the new filters draw like crazy. Watching paint dry like that sends shivers down my left leg.
This is the only place where you can say that "it's about as exciting as watching paint dry". :0D
