I was given the same mower with the same problem along with several others. Adjusted the cable, cleaned the carb replaced the battery, changed the oil, starter and deck cover plate. $125 and several hours of repair time. Almost as good as new! Thank you for the video.👍
I run into this situation on a Craftsman mower several years back. Pretty much the same Tecumseh engine but the mechanism was on the left side of the engine. And you're correct that it doesn't happen often on a Briggs engine. Good video!

One I checked my cable it was tight and when I did the test that he suggested I noticed that the end piece was not moving easily. I used a bit of WD 40 and then I had it turnover every time.

Hi there. I have same mower. just bought it used. when i turn elec start key,hear nothing. starts right up with pull cord tho. first thing im assuming is,to check battery? How would i do this? Multimeter?
my lawn more spark switch gets press perfectly fine.. but still not sure after turning key switch I get just motor sound not really starts. let me know what next I can check..
@backwoodsctryboy but do you keep them for parts? i have not seen a huge parts pile in your shop in any vids
@TDHReviews i always get a deposit of one hour labor upfront when the unit is checked in for repairs...that way you get paid for your time if the unit is deemed unrepairable
I have a toro zero turn mower z5035 and in having problems getting it to run. First the battery went dead so I put my jump box and it cranked over but did not start it getting fuel because I removed the fuel line and saw it pumping out fuel. Do you think that it may be the coil.
What a great video on toros electric start. I have the same mower but when I turn the key it makes a squealing sound and wont start. I can use the pull cord and starts every time. I'm thinking that its the starter any ideas?
me too, new battery turns it over well, but takes a long time before it starts, but if I use the pull start, it fires up immediately , any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
My Toro 6.5 hp walk behind , will start with pull chord, the electric start failed after about 2 years of use. I may fix it one day.

I have the same electric start Toro mower - it will start cold after priming with the electric start but many times it won’t start with the electric start after it’s warm - starts fine with the cord. Do you have any ideas of what could be going on?
Thanks for your videos and help. We have toro 20062 with BS engine 120000. Will start with difficulty using pull but when using electric starter, just turns over and over, never firing. Thoughts? (Seems to be different problem than on video)

Have a toro 6.75hp GTS mower with the key electric start
the pinion does not come out to engage with the flywheel, have tried cleaning it, & dry lube still the motor runs fine but the pinion which moves freely by hand will not come out and engage
I’ve got the same mower on the bench that will turn over but not start, but if you pull start it, it will fire up and run like a champ. Have you heard of this before or do you know what could cause this?
i have the same mower it starts then shuts off i put a new spark plug in still wont stay running. the starter motor needs to be replaced but i just use the pull start let me know thanks

I bought mower like this $20 , man said need new spark plug and carburetors. Ask about key switch and battery cable been cut he said still would run without that begin intake. New spark plug and carburetors later still not starting up. Any good advice would be helpful before I stripped mower down to deck . ( Do own another mower with same engine size that run but deck rust away around wheels.) But if this is engine savable want try to get up running.
I just installed a new battery and checked to see that i have full range of motion on the cable. Engine is now turning over but still not starting with the key. Starts fine with the pull cord. Any suggestions?

Hey man check the fuse could have blown also it could be a wire that came disconnected.... or worse you need a new starter motor
Did you ever figure out what causes this? I’ve got the same mower and it’s doing the same thing. Won’t start with electric start, but runs like a champ when you pull start it. I’ve tried everything I can think of to fix it but same results…
What i do when i get these mowers in the shop that have no spark, especially tecumsehs i just disconect the ground cable on the coil then test it again. No spark and i replace the coil and if there is spark then i know i need to look at the kill system
And what happens when you guys get dead machines that arent worth repairing? do you keep them for parts or what?

@backwoodsctryboy I tried to open the cover and failed. Everything looked like a one piece machine to me. The engine seemed to be right above the blades. I'll check if i can remove them and also will find where the air filter is... sorry, i really suck at this thing.. Oh, a queastion: if i, like take everything.. well most of everything off, to see what is wrong with it or find where things are, do you think this mower can work the same if i put them all back in?
Hey, i tried to use one yesterday and it wouldn't start. Mine duzn't need a key to start. I have to press a a big trigger with my palm and then push a bottom to start it. I will try open the cover and see if i can touch and pull anything. lol Any suggestion? Like, where to look first lol
I’ve got the same mower on my bench, and it does the same thing and turns over and over but won’t start. But you can pull start it and it runs like a champ. The cable appears to be fine no bends or anything. The guy who owns this mower is an elderly man and can’t pull start the mower. Have you had any experience with this type of problem or know how to fix it? I’m sure it’s something simple I’m overlooking. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same mower. Starts fine with the pull start. Starter motor does not engage. New battery, starter spins fine bench testing. Will not spin the motor. Any ideas as to what it could be?

I thought this would talk about the other typical problem - the starter spins but does not engage the flywheel. I am surprised but I can't find anything on TH-cam for this, even though it seems like every electric start mower I ever had, eventually gets this problem! Pinion doesnt go down far enough to engage flywheel, so i wanted to see what causes that. thanks!
Did you figure out? I cleaned shaft n it worked a few times but didn't lube. Now gear keeps spinning even without key on, had to pull fuse or it will discharge battery. What causes this?
So my mower starts on manual start, but doesnt start on key/electric start, all i hear is a whining sound. New battery. Is it time to replace starter motor?
We have a Toro push mower model # 20374. When I disconnected the charger I pulled too hard and the plastic cover for the wires came off. Not realizing how close they were I'm thinking I shorted them out I bought a new charger inserted the wires in the charger but the light on the charger stays green, as if it's fully charged, and pushing when I push on the started button nothing happens. I tried using the pull cord to start it but again nothing. What do I need to do to repair this? I'm not sure what part to buy to fix this. If you can help that would be great. Thanks.

@gorillasproperty remove the air filter and spray some carb cleaner in the intake.....if it starts then you know its a possible fuel issue
Where can i get ' just the battery clip on the handlebar. Mine tore off on a fence.

I'm at the point where I wont even take a mower with a Tecumseh engine. Just to much of a headache to fix them sometimes.
@backwoodsctryboy Hey, finally broke the cover lol & the only thing i found was some blonz wire. Dumbfounded for a moment. Then started blowing on it trying to get rid of ..dunno, dust? Found like two pieces of dry glass near the wire so picked them off and started blowing again. Hoped that would help starting the mower. Also knew that was a silly thought. Did take some pics of the mower just in case. Then tried starting the mower. It worked..... Must be an amazing blow job... LOL
