This is a good helpful video, would love to see more of this at least for popular laptops. It also shows how we can still get away with 8GB for gaming in 2020.
I installed all my games on an external SSD drive and I connect it once I want to play a game. Works flawless and never had to open the backlid. So, that's a nice alternative.
Many thanks - just installed a 1TB HD into our L340 - one minor issue is the connecting table flip-over flange popping out (or having a malfunctioning hinge). The good news is you can still insert the flat cable and secure with some electric tape and that all gets sandwiched and held in place by the M2 SSD reinsertion :)
Been using this video as an upgrade guide for my L340 the past several months. Just swapped out the og SSD yesterday for a 1TB Xpg Gammix S70 Blade. Wifi 5
Wow jarrod! Not only you are the only one who made a serious review for that pc (which i bought 8 monthes ago), you JUST made an wifi upgrade guide when i need it. Wll done!!
Hi Jarrod! Is it possible to connect to this laptop an external monitor with better refresh rate than 60hz? I've tried but the monitor seems to be connected to the intel gpu instead of the gtx1650.
I went a similar way - bought an L340 with i7-9750HF, 8GB RAM, 256GB NVMe and 1TB HDD (as I wanted to have this caddy already here - and the disk can still be used as an external drive in an USB case). So, I swapped the RAM against 16GB, had both an NVMe 2TB SSD and a SATA 2TB SSD. OS had to be installed manually anyway (the laptop came with FreeDOS), so no migration necessary. Your video definitely helped me choosing this procedure, and this machine is really a beast of a laptop in this price range.
@@sssoban it was a 16GB Crucial DDR4-2400 module (1.2V) - in the meantime, I had switched with a 32GB Crucial DDR4-2666 module (system uses it at 2400MHz). Make sure that the RAM works with 1.2V and is at least DDR4-2400.

As for games I play, BF4 runs quite well (around 80FPS on 1080p), and BFV runs OK (although some Pacific maps do drag me down to the 20-30FPS, even on low settings). And Cities Skylines (a memory hog if you play with some mods and lots of assets - my game takes easily 20GB+ of RAM) made me upgrade to 32GB of RAM, so it does not have to use the page file.

Hi! Interestingly, this is actually available in the Philippines with a "sort of" dual-channel option, but only for the i5 variants (i7 versions are stuck with 8gb single channel). Our i5 variants here have 4gb ddr4 2400mhz soldered onboard, but have 1 open ram slot on the board, capable of 20gb (4+16 dual channel) max! They recently announced a sale here where you could grab an i5/4gb/512ssd/gtx1650 for around 43,995 philippine pesos, or roughly US$876 (with tax applied) with MS Office 2019 Home & Student preinstalled and 2 years Onsite premium care warranty and a separate 2.5" drive bracket out of the box. Hello Jarrod/everyone, I followed your tutorial on my Lenovo L340 step by step with the same components. Actually everything worked smoothly, so first of all thank you so much. However now I've got the feeling that maybe my laptop is overheating too much (80°/85° in MSI afterburner on Pes20 and GTA5) mostly in the zone of the Ram. Because of this I'd really appreciate your feedback in your experience after upgrading the laptop, thus I can know if these temperatures are normal or not (I also have an airflow cooler). The only thing I have changed besides the new ram and SSD it's the internal configuration to run games with the 1650 in the Nvidia control panel instead of the default configuration (which I think it's kind of a mix between both GPUs, correct me if I'm wrong). Would you guys have some ideas or advice about this? Thank you in advance 😊 .
AshtonRocks 1000 With this computer probably not that much more fps because your system will be bottlenecked by the gpu or cpu but it should help to eliminate lag spikes, wich will make the expierience a lot better.
man this is such a useful video the website from lenovo tells it has 2 ram slots one soldered and other left open what a mislead thanks bro you did a pretty good job
Helmy Haikal the laptops have small onboard current when there’s a power source connected either cable or battery, this posts potential shortcut when you remove or install parts on the motherboard, which will fry everything in its way, even your cpu or gpu

Hello! I'm a big noob with computer parts now and I have no clue how ssd works. I did some research and was wondering if I'd have to install windows onto the additional 2.5 drive if I'm not replacing the m.2 drive. Your videos are actually a big life saver and I appreciate your work! Ty for your time
This will probably get lost in a sea of comments and I know it's old, but for those willing to answer, should I remove the battery before installing any of these upgrades? In my case, it would be ram. I just wondered since it wasn't shown in the video. Some say it's a requirement to be safe, others say it isn't. Otherwise, this helped me out a ton, thank you!
I upgraded mine but didn't have a sheild over the Ram module and the fans were smaller and doesn't have a slot for an M.2 Drive near the 2.5 inch HDD so I guess some of their L340 machines are built different from the one you took apart with a cheaper motherboard and probably cheaper parts too to save on their cost.
Ok, so for the RAM upgrade you saw almost no change in perfomance, but what if I change it for a DDR4 with CL14 instead of CL17, do you believe it will help with a faster perfomance?
Is it possible to upgrade the GPU in the future? The CPU is great, but the GTX 1650 is kinda a bottleneck for the CPU on graphically demanding PC games. This laptop has a problem with power limit throttling too and one can't increase fan speed, which affects performance when hitting a certain temperature. Great video, keep it up!
I bought the 17 inch, i5 (9th Gen) L340 but it came with a GTX 1050? Strange.. Runs all my games perfectly thought.. Thnx for the tips, ill upgrade the RAM, harddrive and WiFi zoon! Keep it up
Lenovo wants way too much for theirs components especally when those laptops are in consumer line , its like buying thinkpads parts but for consumer grade laptops for premum price its all mixed up and they should consider it. Good vid!
The lenovo l340 was one of the best gaming laptops it has problems like the single channel or the battery but the real problem for me (nowadays) is the price 900 dolars for the basic model ( i5 9300h, gtx 1650 , 8gb 2400mhz , 512 gb nvme) and with 670 u can get an acer nitro 5 with ryzen 5 4600h , gtx1650 , 8gb 3200mhz and a 256gb ssd big difference right. But the desing of the lenovo has no comparisons for me is discrete and at the same time gaming. If lenovo makes an L340 with dual channel, ryzen 4000/ intel 10th gen , gtx1650 gddr6, 3000mhz ram and a starting price of 700 it will be a sales sucess and ill definetely buy it ;).
thanks jarrod! never thought you’d upload more L340 vids lol. was the wifi speed improvement significant? also didn’t expect such little increase in gaming performance going from 8gb to 16gb lol
Unfortunately I couldn't test it, I only have a WiFi 4 access point from 2010, it's so garbage and is why none of my reviews do WiFi testing :( I am actually in the middle of researching a WiFi 6 upgrade so I can test this in future though!

I had a couple of questions. 1. What type of undervolt can you get on the GPU/can you do a video on the undervolting the GPU? I undervolted the cpu core+cache by 140mv and the IGPU by 50mv but i havent done the gtx 1650 yet. Im hoping it would increase battery life as the battery life of this laptop isnt the best. 2. How does the intel AX200 wifi card compare to the Killer AX1650 (i think thats the correct model number)? 3. What type of thermal paste would you recommend applying to the CPU and GPU and could you make a video on how to reapply thermal paste to it (the laptop thermal throttles quite a bit)?

Здравствуйте! Вы опытный пользователь ноутбуков/компьютеров? Вам еще нужна помощь?
This is an awesome review! Keep it up. It helps!
16GB RAM is the way to go for gaming, streaming and video editing. Apex Legends takes advantage of 16GB RAM.
It's a good sweet spot.
Warzone get‘s a huge performance increase with 16gb as well
@@tomrichter7979 how much of an increase? I have this laptop and was thinking of upgrading the ram.
AshtonRocks 1000 With this computer probably not that much more fps because your system will be bottlenecked by the gpu or cpu but it should help to eliminate lag spikes, wich will make the expierience a lot better.
man this is such a useful video the website from lenovo tells it has 2 ram slots one soldered and other left open what a mislead
thanks bro you did a pretty good job
1:05 dude disconnect the battery before any actions
i absolutely agree with u
Why?
Helmy Haikal the laptops have small onboard current when there’s a power source connected either cable or battery, this posts potential shortcut when you remove or install parts on the motherboard, which will fry everything in its way, even your cpu or gpu
@@kentd2869 i fried my l340 mainboard while changing ram without detaching battery. lol....was under warranty and luckily they gave me i7 9750h instead of my i59300h :-)
nice video,nice clear camera angle
Thanks for the video! Anyone has upgraded to 16GB? does it worth?
I heard its good for warzone but ...
And no place for dual channel
Great info and a fun watch, Jarrod 👍
fwiw, I don't see this content as a missed opportunity for another review. Makes JT a one stop shop for model suggestions and for answers to the inevitable questions about upgrading the most popular units.
Hey Jarrod , I again changed my name . From XaGlez to AFK GAMER. Don"t forget me XD
XD
Nice video! Thank you very much for this guide
I don't see crucial products and being the mega crucial fanboy I am I must scream
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
thanks for the video! Lucky for me, my came with the HDD caddy but no sata cable nor hdd. Going to order the cable and attach the HDD from my previous laptop.
the single-channel seriously kills this laptop
Just bought it and not done my research, regret it big time. Will probably just cut my losses and sell it tbh.
@@James-ip8xs is it really that bad?, what is the difference with double channel?
2:46 the ssd inserted by Lenovo is a m.2 SATA but in their website they said the mother board only supports m.2 NVME so what should i purchase ??
NVME or SATA (there isnt that big of a difference in terms of performance but there is a difference in price)
I guess they didn't know the extra connector for it was for, so you can use both the SATA and the NVME SSDs.
Thank you. Great video. I struggled with opening the lid 😅.
I swapped my nvme to the 990 pro with heatsink 1TB. Soon ill upgrade the hdd to ssd 2TB. i dont need the space. Maybe in the future i will
Upgraded ram successfully. Got my wifi card a week later. Antenna pulling the ring out of the socket on the original card and I can’t get it out ).:
Thanks for video. It helped me have a better idea how to upgrade my laptop. I just had broken antenna, not faulting of you.
One of the most well done Upgrade Tutorials Out there, Not doing Ads in video ( like ssd manufacturer ) is a good thing to do..
I would have the same choice with the budget king m.2 512gb and not samsung any size i can afford even dramless for games etc ..
Unless you do Real work , make sure you get a top tier ssd for reliability..
Thanks!
I installed the ram perfectly without removing anything. Just turn off the laptop, and do as he did!
@@hauldencottenfield869 Thanks for the answer, I'll see how it goes.
Edit: Yeah, remove the battery to be safe. I'll leave it at that.
@@sassykat2587 what happens if you don’t remove the battery
Excellent mate! this is so helpful. Thank you!
Hi JT, excellent review as usual. Can you please review new Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3? Thanks.
that is an interesting placement for the 2,5 inch drive, without occupying the battery's space
Yeah I guess the motherboard doesn't need to take up as much space as most others.
Thank you for your video. I was able to upgrade my labtop. sosososo thank you!!!!
Ok, so for the RAM upgrade you saw almost no change in perfomance, but what if I change it for a DDR4 with CL14 instead of CL17, do you believe it will help with a faster perfomance?
Great video.
Hopefully you can make a video about hot to clean l340 from inside and how to re-paste CPU and GPU
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, could do it when I do my paste testing video maybe
Undervolting GPU and CPU helps a lot
Bro! I am waiting for Asus G15. It's awesome. I hope you do a detailed review.
I bought the 17 inch, i5 (9th Gen) L340 but it came with a GTX 1050? Strange.. Runs all my games perfectly thought.. Thnx for the tips, ill upgrade the RAM, harddrive and WiFi zoon! Keep it up
Thank you, a fantastic video, very considered!!!
Thank you!! Really helpful!
You're welcome!
Lenovo wants way too much for theirs components especally when those laptops are in consumer line , its like buying thinkpads parts but for consumer grade laptops for premum price its all mixed up and they should consider it.
Good vid!
Thanks! Yeah definitely, the price they wanted for that cable was a rip off, third party is the way to go there for sure.
In fact, all OEM companies do that.
The lenovo l340 was one of the best gaming laptops
it has problems like the single channel or the battery but the real problem for me (nowadays) is the price 900 dolars for the basic model ( i5 9300h, gtx 1650 , 8gb 2400mhz , 512 gb nvme) and with 670 u can get an acer nitro 5 with ryzen 5 4600h , gtx1650 , 8gb 3200mhz and a 256gb ssd big difference right.
Please do a Helios 300 Thermal paste Temperature difference, i'm pretty sure it will get tons of views
thanks jarrod! never thought you’d upload more L340 vids lol. was the wifi speed improvement significant? also didn’t expect such little increase in gaming performance going from 8gb to 16gb lol
Unfortunately I couldn't test it, I only have a WiFi 4 access point from 2010, it's so garbage and is why none of my reviews do WiFi testing :( I am actually in the middle of researching a WiFi 6 upgrade so I can test this in future though!
@@JarrodsTech the things you do for your viewers haha cheers! how's the laptop holding up though? just need a few words before i finally buy it in 2 weeks! the only thing i'm bummed about is the single channel memory so i'm hoping it hasn't affected your usage a ton
actually upgrading the RAM may help if you do video editing works and opening many brower tabs to download assets at the same time.
I like how the laptop's screen just wobbles at 6:32 , I'm watching on my l340 and the screen is also wobbling in my laptop :)
Same bro the screen on mine loves to wobble a lot as well. Your comment made me feel better cause I thought that I was using a defective one (sorry for the bad english)
What is the best RAM I can upgrade to? I'm not familiar if the different RAMs have different physical sizes so I am a bit worried I might buy a wrong sized RAM. Thanks!
hi jarrod's thanks for the advice, i got the y540 i7 gtx1650 16gb ram 512gb ssd, but i have the question right now, are you recommended to upgrade BIOS right now or i stay with old one? thanks 😁
Hi, which program do you use for undervolting the i5 9300h, on the web site it says this cpu is not compatible with Intel extreme tuning utility.
Thanks for the video.
In terms of that 16GB Ram upgrade does the laptop on fit a 260 pin upgrade? Other than that absolutely amazing vid man you need more subs
Was the old M2 drive you removed the one included with the system? I'm curious about the original drive's speed, can't seem to find it anywhere.
Great video !! 👍
Bought this laptop on sale for $699. Gotta say. It can handle anything you throw at it. Can run most games on high at 60fps. It has a GTX 1650 which is the same as the Razer blade laptops.
Sir help me . I am planning to buy the Asus Rog Strix Scar III G531GV ( 144Hz | RTX 2060 | i7-9750H | 16 GB RAM ) . It worth buying in 2020 or should I go for any other laptop ? Your help will mean a lot to me ❣️ Thank you ❤️
Perfect video liked but if my laptop came with the hard drive I don’t need to get the mounting kit or cable right?
Thank you for review this laptop. I already bought it, and it is on the way to my home.
Hey Jarrod, nice video. Can you please do a review of the lenovo ideapad gaming 3i?
i have this shorter m.2 like you have . i watched this vid and know now how i can use the regular m.2 1tb i have on another laptop..a little fast talking but thanks for this .
super helpful!
Nice video! Do you know if it's possible to upgrade to 32GB of RAM? I found some single sticks at 3200MHz but I'm not sure if it will support it. Thank!
Yes it is possible but you will have to stick with 32 GB 2400 MHz of RAM, cause the chipset doesn’t support overclocking of RAM.
Hi, helpful video as always! Is it possible you can do a comparison video between the new Asus A15 versus Lenovo Legion Y7000/Y540?
I'll see what I can do, but might hold off for the 10th gen 5i rather than compare to last gen given next is so close.
Hi, thanks for the detailed guide. Just to make sure I'm getting it correctly, if my laptop comes with 8GB RAM, and I want to upgrade to 16GB RAM, I will have to remove the one 8GB ram stick and buy one new 16GB ram stick, right?
Right
no < i have the same issue & i choose just to add 8 gb ram to make it 16 gb .
@@Slinder.man1 Maybe your model is different. I already bought this laptop (model Lenovo L340 15IRH), and it has only 1 accessible RAM slot. I had to remove the factory 8GB stick and install a 16GB one. Hope this helps.
