You putting the video out with it not starting it’s just as valuable to me personally as you successfully getting it running. I sometimes don’t know when to keep going and when to quit on a project that I don’t know enough about. Often, I’ll give up too early. You don’t, even when you’re faced with a difficult project. It’s inspiring and I appreciate it. Thank you

Go with getting you service truck good to go. Everything will move along faster. Good job on getting 3 videos out. The Kubota ... well you were just trying to get it to turn over in order to craft a plan. When I do that I often get sucked down a rabbit hole. Seems to me you want it up and running and contributing as soon as possible ... so just put another engine in it and save the existing one for future project. I enjoy your videos because I often learn something new ... keep living the dream.

If it was in a tractor and you just wanted it to run I'd say pull the oil pan, pop the pistons and re-ring it. Do all your measurements on the cylinder liners, top, bottom... If the the liner's aren't to far out Size the rings properly. Now that engine being in a skid steer your gonna have to pull it. That head is pretty bad and definitely due for replacement.

Yea problems that can really irritate you, even offer discouragement...however, think of those "young wanna be" mechanics who are watching-- they are learning so much, not only in how to do a job, but also what level of attitude one needs to tackle a problem, the "stick with it" mentality, the can do spirit...which you exemplify to a high degree. That is your real value, sharing with others your approach to your work and to those items you choose to repair and fix. Well done, very well done!

Very interesting watching the progression of attempts on the skid steer, just sorry it turned out the way it did. Am sure you are going to make it right. As far as the next project and when you asked you really answered the question as to which should be next. To be practical and most useful in the future setting up the service truck making it fully operational and installing welder, generator and air compressor in that when you arrive at equipment you have what you need, it's a rolling shop.

    Awesome job! My advice is:
    1. Put a can of restore in the oil. Search Project Farm channel for compression and watch the first and year later results.
    2. Get the block heater working.
    3. Put some type of small electric heater, heat gun, etc on the area of the injector pump.
I don't think you will ever get it to start at those cold temps without lots of warmup.
Totally agree that getting it running even poorly will help determine how to preceed.
Keep doing this, you are helping a lot of people.

(Works grrrrrr8) I would have tried brazing up those cracks in the head (nothing ventured nothing gained) I had a Kubota with low oil pressure (no metal in the pan or filter) when I tore it down the rod bearings looked new. The crank was softer metal than the bearings & the crank was undersized causing my problem. $1,100.00 for the crank. Total rebuild parts was over $3,000.00. Expensive little engine to rebuild...but....it's still running today - 3,000 hours later. Thanks for your video's 👍

I have a v2203 in a 1997 bobcat 753. I tried soaking them with a combo of atf and acetone for 2 months, as I had stuck rings on 2 cylinders. A TOTAL waste of time. Ended up pulling the motor, and rebuilding it. Had to dry sleeve those 2 cylinders. Rings had to be chiseled out of the ring grooves. Rebuilds on these kubotas are insane expensive. Other than the dry sleeving, the rest of my parts were good, and it still cost over 2k. The gasket kits which were available quickest through bobcat were between 6 and 700.00 as I remember. Excellent engine, just expensive to fix properly. Best of luck.

You are definitely not a quitter. You are very organized and have some solid troubleshooting skills. A ball hone would be much better to clean up the cylinders. A quick spin with the solid hone is good to show you the bad spots but if you completely hone out those bad spots then you are going to always lose more compression than you gain. The service truck looks like an interesting project. I would like to see you tackle that because I could learn a lot about how it works from the excellent way you tackle and video a troubleshooting event.

The 7 gap is fine for now, you might be a wee bit tight if the engine warms up and the push rods get longer, but it's cold so no worries.
The check valve on your gauge is messed up - they are not supposed to be able to leak down until you release it.
At the risk of redundant advice, the rings are stuck and can't expand/seat to the new cylinder size/ovaling.
    Comment mostly for algo. ;-)
PS When your piston is topped it is either between squeeze/bang or blow/suck (^suck_squeeze^bang_blow^...) You should set the valves at TDC of squeeze/bang as TDC for blow/suck you will already be up on the lobe of the camshaft.

    • @pamike4873
      @pamike4873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The gauge is fine. A 4-stroke consists of 1. Intake, 2. Compression, 3. Power, and 4. Exhaust. And yes, you have to adjust your valves on the compression stroke at overlap.

1:16:23 you could give it a shot heating the pistons with a torch to toasty 300°C when the piston expands and the old grime liquifies from heat the piston rings might very well pop out... Other possible solution is letting it soak in a mix of high concentration nitrate laquer paint thinner and brake fluid but you gotta swap engine oil thereafter and it must not contact rubber or plastic cause it'll eat it like gas does Styrofoam
Also you got to oil all surfaces since the solvent degreased everything like acetone so it will flash rust like crazy and the fumes are flamable
If the rings are neither broken nor stuck due to Metall shavings they should pop

Western Truck and Tractor Repair channel does not like Kubotas because he cannot do 'in frame' overhauls due the construction if the lower crankcase and the engine has to be removed to get the pistons and liners out. I dont know if it this applies also to the smaller Kubota motors but it would not surprise me.

Im surprised it took so long for you to notice the extremely low compression, off the bat the engine span over way too easily, did you notice the difference between the skid steer and the sweeper cranking? Next was the huge blow by coming back up the push rod holes.
Honing the cylinders only made the problem worse as you took off the smooth sirface on the bore also you increased the size of the bore making the already big ring gap worse, I think someone ran it without an air filter resulting in excessive wear throughout the whole engine, shame really.
In my opinion the engine is beyond economical repair, you might want to look for another vehicle with a good engine you can rob.
Kudos for sticking with it tho'.

it is actually not that expensive to replace the sleeves, pistons and rods but if it that crank is toast its a no go in my opinion.

    Try another compression gauge.
Your combustion chamber is small ,
When you filled it with oil and was cranking it appears the oil went into the gauge by the way the gauge was acting . You most likely blew out the Burbon tube inside the gauge.
It cranked as if was it making compression by the sound of it.
Try throwing the the rest of way back
, Nozzles, etc , bleed the lines , etc.
    Good luck

As I've said many times before, love the channel! You put things in layman's terms so that someone like me who is not mechanically gifted can understand! And there is no amount of praise I will spare in thanking you for this. Couple of questions regarding the skid steer/armored Bobcat, and bear in mind that most of my knowledge comes from watching *vast* amounts of restoration channels like this. Footnote: I'm going to be taking welding classes starting in the Fall, and a good deal of my intense desire for this comes from watching your channel and a few others! So thanks!
    1. Can the exhaust manifold be repaired using brazing? (it looks like iron). I don't know a lot about this, but with some welding and then tapping out new holes to thread it into the block it should be reparable, right?
    2. This comes from a place of complete and total ignorance, but could one build up the heads on cylinders 2 and 3 using welding and then sanding it down flat? I understand that's quite a lot of work, but what if you had willing volunteers??? :D
    3. I know you don't want to try and rebuild the motor. But I *really* want to see it! I know that if/when you do you'll pull it apart and do a perfect job on it, all the while explaining how it works to engine newbs like me, and there's no value that can be placed on that experience!
    4. With so many projects going at once, would you take volunteers to help clean/prep individual parts to reuse? Or just helping out around the shop? I do volunteer work at the NC Transportation Museum working on restoring the old DC-3 they have there, and each time I work a shift I learn more. Your shop is an environment where people could learn valuable skills (like I do at the Museum) and can provide ready hands on help to assist you with restoration. Just have them sign a non-disclosure agreement not to steal Old Red when it's done.

I'd like to see the service truck. There aren't many of those up on TH-cam, and it would be cool to see you fix it up.
As for those glorious old Chevy trucks, PLEASE don't make them into yet more cliche' rat rods. I come from the northeast, where we call patina "tin worm", or simply "cancer". Shine 'em up, give 'em a fresh coat of paint, and let 'em live again!

I'll disagree with the done to death comment considering there is alot more shiny shiny machines than ratrods in the world.

A step in the cylinder wall is just purely wear from the pistons rings. The condition of crank or conrod bearings won’t affect that

    • @markregler2164
      @markregler2164 2 ปีที่แล้ว

This. Crankbearing or conrod bearing wear will leave a visible worn patch on the thrust side of the piston skirt/cylinder wall

    • @kevinmartin7760
      @kevinmartin7760 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I also think that using a hone to remove the ridge probably also wore the lower area of the cylinders quite a bit larger than they started. There is a special tool just for removing the wear ridge from the top of the cylinder which does not enlarge the rest of the cylinder.
Stuck rings would certainly explain why honing made things worse.
If it is just a case of stuck rings, once unstuck they may or may not make a proper seal on the enlarged cylinders, you might need oversize rings.

And was trained on one. Love them. Those cab overs got me out of a lot of tight places. 😅but I’m I interested in all the projects that you have lined up. Hope to see you soon on the Cabo er. The other one is the service trucks. I believe you will go nuts over fixing it to suit your likes. I know it will be good. Just wish you would get some paint and get them handsome. I know you like the patina on them. It’s ok if you don’t , I will still watch you conduct business.

I recently watched a series by Squatch253 rebuilding a Cat D2 with a busted block and other issues. People interested in precise work and how things work should have a look at the series (he's not finished yet!). The lesson there was that he has used a number of donor machines to get the necessary parts - not just one more expensive source.
I am guessing that the lack of a working air cleaner has done major mischief to all moving surfaces so decide early on the objective - just get running or back to original.

Can you give an idea what the skidsteer is worth in the current condition and then tell us what you think it would be worth if you repaired the engine, installed new tires and painted what it would be worth. You are great at fixing things so I am curious how much labor and parts it will take to get it working in good condition. Then we can learn how much you have increased the value of a machine that was left for dead. Thanks.

The old Chevy flatbed truck is pretty cool, but I think the cab-over is cooler. As for the service truck. Out of all three of my fathers older fuel delivery trucks his oldest one was an 85 or 86 International S1600. All three if his trucks had the DT466 in them which he never had any problems with. So I don't if it's the engine labeled the "Dreaded 9.0L" He's always just done regular maintenance intervals changing fluids/filters and keep things greased and never really had any major issues. Anything beyond his capability he always had a tech he knew that did that stuff for him. :)

Matt I have a 1948 5 window that I have brought back from the dead. It started out life as a 3600 (3/4 ton) and I turned it into a short bed 3100. The truck was too far go to leave the patina. instead I have turned it into a a pristine hot rod. It sits on an S10 chassis with a 6.0 LS under the hood. I will have this road ready within the next few months. I do have a few parts left over that would fit the 3 window 1/2 ton you have.

Its nice to see all this fail (at least for now). I'd say 75% of the stuff I get into like this doesn't work out and you have to know when to cut your losses, or at least step back and work on better options for a while. My favorite part about your vids is how genuine they are. No marketing, no hype, just get in there and troubleshoot and share some ideas. One thing I did notice on this set of videos is your triaging is a little out of order. I know there are a lot of angles you could come at, but seems like a lot of these old machines should get compression tested first thing so you know what you are getting into.
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next ones.
