    That dog is only a couple hundred hours away from turning 30, and it fell into the right hands to get another 30 years. I admire your old school approach, how you peel back layers on all of your projects. Under adverse conditions, yeah, throw in a new pump and work your way out to getting it running asap, but these are your tools, and this is your hobby. It's more than a tool, it's a part of an entire collection of equipment that others wrote off as no longer useful. Keep up the good work, and keep making these great video's.

    The reason you water separator has no fuel purging out is because it’s on the suction side of the pump if you were to remove that filter you would find it is nearly empty ( unless stopped up). The glow plugs will cause a hard start but wouldn’t cause the smoke your getting once it’s running. I did hear the fuel knock that is common with fuel leak down. We also know it’s between the pump and injectors because the secondary fuel filter was full when removed. One more thing to look for is a check valve on the return side. This valve allows the fuel system to build primary fuel pressure. Trash will cause the valve to stick an drain fuel back into the tank.

      I agree with everything you said! I didn't think about the check valve on the return side... I'm not sure where it is on this machine... I'll have to take a look, thanks for the idea!

    I bought a non start HMMWV at auction. Put on the two missing tires , pulled it off the delivery flatbed added 5 gallons of fuel. It was very low if not out of fuel. Plus cranked and cranked. White smoke finely fired up. It needed all 8 glow plugs and the smart start box, ie the glow plug controller. She's all good now.saved a boat load of money.

    Back in the early nineties I was a Peugeot Technician at the Main Dealer. I havent read any of the comments below. It was my experience that despite checking that there no air leaks, no fuel leaks, The Diesel Stop solenoid worked correctly from the ignition switch, the Heater Plugs (individually) worked by connecting a wire to the terminal, holding the body with some pliers to earth and connect the other end of the wire to the Positive terminal on the battery, within 12 seconds the plug should being glowing red hot (it will only take 2 to be faulty and the engine will not start) and also the Heater Plug Relay, and the supply wire from the Relay to the Heater Plugs was ok.
    The non running non starting was simply that the Valves had recessed into the valve seats so much so, that the valves were actually being held open, Check your valve gaps !!

    Hi, on the subject of glow plugs I usually just use my cheap multi meter and run a continuity test by one probe on the body and one on the power contact.
    You would not believe the number of times so called engineers have told people that the glow plugs are fine when it turned out that all the plugs were open circuit!!
    I personally think that you are correct in thinking there are further problems as if it was just glow plugs it would not smoke as much when it had fired and run for a short time.
    Looking forward to your next vid on this problem, I am sure you will sort this soon.

    • @SalvageWorkshop

    Good video, I enjoy the investigation and solving of the puzzle...an idea for the next time you run up against a dirty tank in a lousy place to pull and clean. I am 64, when I was a kid my Grandfather had an old, beat to death Ford pickup he bought for the sole purpose of getting to deer camp. The fuel tank was solid but filthy inside...I mean filthy.
    He went ahead and pulled it, and bought a 10 ft or so sewer snake at yard sale, the kind with an interior shaft that turns and the spring housing. He cut the "working end" off of it, and hose clamped two 12ga copper bore brushes to it.
    He then slid that thing down the fill neck and proceeded to run it around in the tank while I stood their with his Milwaukee Hole shooter electric drill and spun the other end of the shaft.
    A couple of hours with that brush deal, some time blowing compressed air through water like you did, and we had that tank spotless.
    He grew up on a farm...didn't have much but he knew how to make things work.
    I still have the drill...it' will snap a mans hand off if it gets away from ya.

    When i first saw you cranking that little skid steer up, i could see that the glow plugs are the most likely culprit for it not starting very well when its cold. lots of white smoke is a sure fire sign that theyre not working, along with hard starting. Since its more of a traditional diesel engine with a mechanical pump, rather than a modern common rail diesel injection sytem

    • @dougcooper6004
      @dougcooper6004 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree, I bought a used skid steer and had trouble starting it until I discovered I wasn't turning on the glow plugs. When starting old Cats with pony motors, white smoke always meant too cold.

    • @Bouwentjes
      @Bouwentjes ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I had the same thought. Also because this issue is apparently jet wash related. Only thing against this theory would be that it would remain running tough. Normally when glow plugs are the issue, the smoke clears up after a minute or so.

    • @pugman205
      @pugman205 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @dirkrussel yeah, its possible there are other issues as well. Possible water ingress into a relay or corroded wires that got knocked off with the pressure washer too. I did notice in the previous video that it was smoking pretty bad, but only seemingly at random

    I'm 1/2 way through this video and from you trying to start the skid steer with all the smoke reminded me when I was in the Army. My HMMWV would smoke like this when I tried to start it, I would get my winter file on and hold the exhaust while someone else started the vehicle would create pressure which would help the starting process until maintenance would change out the glow plugs. You normally seem to work through problems, one step at a time and eventually find the cause, even if there may be obvious possibilities that you overlook at first. The good thing about this approach is that very often you clean up other future problems as you go thus saving you headaches later. I've no doubt you will sort this in the next episode and by then, fuel issues are unlikely to cause any issues for years to come. Good stuff and much more enjoyable than watching building work if you don't mind me saying.

    For your question about the HDD, if it's an older spinning disk hard drive (not a flash/SSD) and it won't spin up or has a problem initializing and you're at your end of options then you can try putting it in the freezer. Seriously. Put it in the freezer for a few hours and if it's a motor/head stuck/crash issue then the cold might break it free and let it work for a little while.
    Use at least one or more ziplocks, get as much air out of the bag as possible and freeze it overnight. If it connects and you get data, copy as fast as possible because it's going to fail again and probably soon.
    Good luck.

      @@SalvageWorkshop As was said, there are many reasons as to why a hard drive will not spin up. One trick that I have used twice with success was the freezer one(been around a long time). It will many times give you at least a few minutes of time to get important data off and sometimes can be repeated for additional minutes of "salvage" time. Simply wrap the drive in plastic tightly/put in zip lock eliminating most of the air to help prevent condensation on the drive and place in a freezer for a while. The cold will tighten everything up inside the drive...at least that is the premise. It won't hurt to try it and may work for you as it has for a lot of people.

    I think there are two separate problems, one of which you may have overcomplicated. The starting problem looks like simply not enough heat. The white smoke indicates fuel, and it runs good after it starts so not sure where you are wanting to go with the injector pump thing. Glow plugs are VERY important, or else they wouldn't be there. Isuzu and several other manufacturers utilize glow plug relay that indeed operate the glow plugs after the engine starts. The second issue with the smoking while operating looks like good old oil burning to me. it's blue, not white or black.

    not sure if you have done anything with your hard drive issue - you might be able to use something like easeUS to take a sector by sector read of the hard drive (so long as the external drive allows it) if it doesn't you might need to open the external drive and convert it to an internal drive. Once you take a sector by sector backup, you can possibly use that to perform a recovery on via easeUS, or other drive recovery tools that work on disk images.

    I worked on a gehl ctl 80 this summer and it’s fuel tank was clogged like this with sludge. I was debating using water or gasoline and the gas dissolved a bunch of that and I flushed it out with kerosene. And started up and ran great.

    For data recovery, I'd recommend Rossmann Repair Group out of Austin, TX. Last I checked, he charges a whole lot less than thousands of dollars that other recovery companies want.
    If you want to have a go yourself, a common problem on WD external hard drives is that the internal hard drive becomes partially or fully disconnected from the controller board inside the drive. Over hundreds or thousands of thermal cycles, the SATA connector disconnects itself. Problem is actually getting inside those units is a bastard. They're held together with clips and sometimes hidden screws. Getting the case off is usually a destructive affair.
    Another common failure is the power supply fails. Most commonly, the capacitors inside the power supply brick/wall wart go bad and the power supply starts putting out dirty DC, which causes havoc with the hard drive controller and the hard drive itself. You can crack the power supply open and fix them, but it's easier and cheaper to just buy a replacement.

    For the external HDD, first try to take the HDD out and plug it straight into an desktop PC.
    If it doesnt work, you may try to diagnose the problem if you have multimeter.
    Measure the diodes and transistors in the HDD's PCB, ive found out that many times the transistor responsible for powering the spindle motor is bad.
    If you find the bad part, you may replace it with a new one, or via component tester, desolder parts from E-waste until you find correct part.
    You may by another 4tb western digital hdd of the same type, try it's pcb to your hdd, or measure what the damaged part was so you have point of reference,
    And if all else fails, you have new 4tb hdd to use in your external hdd caddy.
    Personally, i dont recommed external HDD's, as they are way more prone to external damage.
    However external SSD's dont have this problem and are way better for external use than HDD's

      Those are all hreat tips! I'd like to add one more: With a mechanical HDD (not an SSD) it may be due to a stuck motor or stepper motor. I've had good luck with freezing broken HDDs. Put it in a plastic ziplock and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. More often than not this revives the disk just long enough to get the data off. It's worth the try.

    • @brianbrians3157
      @brianbrians3157 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup first thing to try would be to freeze it in a zip lock bag to try to temporarily revive it (even better if you can run it while in the freezer via a long cable). Next is to remove the hdd from the enclosure and either try a different external hdd adapter or install it normally inside the pc. I dont know about swapping hdd circuit boards, you would have to find one with the exact same model and probably also the same board revision.

    As others have Said Glow plugs are most likely the problem. Your getting plenty of Fuel, hence the smoke. That engine needs them for start up cold and even warm weather if off for awhile.
    Use a test light to confirm voltage at the plugs and GP circuit on prestart.
    Then unhook each one and use the test light to check each plug by connecting test light ground wire to Pos. side of battery and use the probe to touch the terminal stud one at a time on each GP. If light, Lites then it's good. don't touch ground.

      Ive NEVER once started it with glow plugs... I'm more concerned with the smoke that is has while running, and MUCH less about the hard starting issue... I will be getting into the glow plugs at some point soon, Ill show you that as well!

    For your hard drive problem. I’ve had really good success with pulling HD out and putting them in a external docking station that plugs into a usb. Plus if it doesn’t work you can still use it to mount a new HD.
    See this one amazon: SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5" or 3.5"' HDD, SSD [Support UASP] (EC-UBLB)

    Check the glow plugs. Un hook the wires from the glow plugs. Hook up a test light ground to the positive terminal of the battery. Touch the probe to the glow plug terminal. If the test light illuminates then the glow plug is ok. Check for power at the glow plug relay and at the glow plug terminal to see if the relay is working. If that is all good do a compression test to make sure the engine isn’t dusted. Then look at the injection pump and the injectors. Those can all be bench tested at a diesel pump repair shop

    Hi for the HDD, try to get a similar drive and replace the pcb board, if this doesn't work it might be a mechanical problem and there you need a really clean place to exchange the plates between a known working unit for the ones in your drive. Hope it helps.

      @SalvageWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video. I can't help wondering if the pressure wash either took out or affected the glo plug circuit so the plugs are either not working or not getting up to full temp. Also I would check that the injector pump electric shut off valve is getting full power to open it.

    The issue is clearly a glow plug issue.
    This is the first place to start to cure starting issue.
    The lift pump on the filter is the only way you’ll get fuel to pump out of the filter bleed. Open the bleed and crank and you’ve filled the system with air again and are back to square one.
