  • I meant to say that brand new Technics are at least $1000 each, not a pair. Also, below are the links to the turntablist videos that I mentioned. Let me know if you have any questions, and I'd be happy to answer them for you as best as I can.

      I haven't used the new version, but it has lower torque than the original at-lp120, which imo is already at the minimum for DJ performance. I would think the at-lp120x would be more difficult to use, but that is just a guess.

    I've had mine for two years. I put an Empire exl 10 cartridge on it. That helped the base response. I also use a compressor/limiter (used to be a broadcaster) and the sound is smooth and warm. I've heard of people removing the built in preamp. I am using a seperate preamp through a Nikko NR-300 receiver's auxiliary input. No problems with this turntable. The purists will trash talk it. Someday, I may graduate to a used 1200, but this serves my purpose well enough thst I cannot justify the expense.

    Big ups for the review, mate! Thinking of getting a couple of these to get serious about DJing. Like 3 years ago I got a couple Gemini TT-1100 turntables and I'm really getting tired of how flimsy and skippy they are, plus the belts are starting to wear out. Hopefully these will be much better for the job. However I'm also considering the lp120XP as it seems much better suited for full-on DJing and casual listening both, the only issue is it's double the price and a purchase of two would leave me out 800 bucks, but it would probably be worth it.

    I used these for a while, grew frustrated with them. The main reason was the pitch would wander on both of them, you would drop a record, beat match it, bring it back, drop it again and the pitch would've gone out, touch the platter a tad to slow it down and keep it in beat, it would slow down, and then take a few seconds to recover to back where it was supposed to be, you could see it on the strobe. Found i was constantly battling them, even my old crappy KAM beltys didnt piss around like they did. Sold them and bought the 1240s, much much better, no regrets.

      @bikdav 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@funky.ass.breakz4473 Here is what I know so far. On the newer unit, the tone arm height adjustment is gone. The forward and backward platter rotation option is gone. The tonearn pop-up light has been replaced with a basic removable one. On the back, the power comes from an outboard power supply instead of an onboard supply with a "captured" cord. Speaking of "captured" cords, the audio cords are now removable. And there is now a ground connector in case of hum problems. The onboard preamp and USB option have been retained and (I am told) improved.

      Mostly the lowered torque. The original at-lp120 is already at what I would consider the lowest threshold for DJing i.e. back cuing and scratching. Trying to mix on extremely low torque turntables is not fun at all.

    - If I bought a couple I would not need an amplifier right (as they have preamps)?
    - What is the best mixer I can get for those for around 150 dollars?
    Thanks again!

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for checking out my video. With regard to your questions:
      1. You will still need an amp or powered monitors. The internal preamp only converts the phono output to a line signal. All that has to do with is what type of signal is output from the turntable. It has nothing to do with amplification.
      2. Off the top of my head, I would suggest a Numark m2 mixer. It's not great, but for $100 it will work well enough.
      Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck.

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AT95 don't have the best tracking for DJ applications. They're not designed for back cueing or scratching. What's your price range for a mixer, and what are you looking for it to do?

    • @lincoln3x7
      @lincoln3x7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Droid Approved would be nice to stay around $50 for stylus/head per table. The ddm4000 looks neat, would like to find one used cheaper or a less expensive model. What’s the best budget home mixing rig that is legit? Your on deck... now cue up and hit it hot.

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Ortofon Pro S OM is around $50 per cartridge or $80 each if you get them pre-mounted on a headshell.
      As far as mixers go, the Behringer ddm-4000 is one of my favorite mixers for home use. However, if you are new to mixing I would recommend something along the lines of the Numark m2. That has what you need to learn the basics, and you can get one for $80-100 new.

    How are the buttons? I can only mailorder so no way to test them physically. Looks and features are fine, it seems. I used to play on 1200/1210 mk2 and i used quick 33/45 flick to nudge into the groove. That was smooth as the buttons had short travel and no plasticy click or wobble..
    Also sometimes i nudge with the slider by rocking it up and down shortly. How do these controls compare to the Technics in terms of "feel". Any wobble or mechanical noises? How strong is the "snap to -/+0" when getting close to it with the slider? Even on the 1210s it was sometimes hard around that area. How's the pitch slider resolution in general?
    PS: i don't scratch or juggle. Just mixing and beatmatch.

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The buttons do not feel bad, but I never use the 33/45 trick for beat matching, so I can't speak as to how well they work in that capacity. Otherwise, they feel nice and solid, imo.
      The pitch slider is good. It is a little "looser" than a Technics slider that is in good working order, but it still feels good to me when riding the pitch. There is a bit of a dead zone, around the zero mark, but nothing worse than you would find on a 1200 mk2. The pitch control is analog, so the resolution is very good aka infinite. The original at-lp120 is perfectly fine for mixing.
      Hopefully this answers your questions. Thanks for watching.

    • @DroidApproved

      I would not recommend the Pioneer over the Audio Technica. You will just pay more money for the same turntable because of the Pioneer branding. Of those three turntables, I would recommend the Audio Technica at-lp140x. There are some modifications that have been done to the at-lp120, like removing the internal preamp, but I would not say that it is "upgradable". The tone arm does not "Slip off". Replacing the tonearm would involve opening up the turntable and desoldering the connections.

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are lower than Technics. IIRC the starting torque of the at-lp120 is 1.7 kg/cm, which is the sustained torque of a Technics. Unfortunately, Audio Technica doesn't specify the sustained torque. It is a bit lower than Technics, but it's not unusable or anything that you can get used to. The newer model, the at-lp120x, has even lower torque, and I would not recommend using that for mixing or scratching purposes.

The same thing also happens when I use Serato Scratch Live. I can't explain why it does that, but I have never noticed any problems with mixing because of it. My advice is don't worry so much about what the bpm display says, and just use your ears.

    Hey mate, great review, I have had my eye on these for a while and I think you've sold me on them. Technics are very expensive where I live currently so that was always outta the question and this seems a much better option price wise. I find them to be good for long blends. I play House, Techno, and DnB, and all of their subgenres, so I also tend to long transitions (two to four minutes). The starting torque is the same, but the sustained torque is not, so I would recommend riding the pitch for beat matching as opposed to brushing or pushing the platter. I also have a pair of Technics 1200mk2, a pair of Technics 1200mk5, and a pair of at-lp1240s. Trust me, I know what DJ turntables are. 😉

    dumped my atlp 5 due to similar problems with motor noise and overall poor sound. that others have experienced.. replaced with a rega plannar 2... same price as these cheapo hanpin decks but in a totally different league...

      I did not mention anything about poor sound or motor noise. Also, neither of the decks you mentioned are suitable for mixing or scratching. This review is for DJs who are considering using these decks for mixing and scratching.

      RP 2 has wowand flutter more than the lp 120.

    Good review...
    unfortunately the lp120 is piss poor for heavy use.
    I had to put plastic underneath my slip mat, they are fine for using in your home, practicing on and fine for beginners.
    They definitely shouldn’t cost more then $200.
    All plastic construction, thin rca cable and incredibly wobbly feet, make this a less than stellar purchase.
    I used technics for over fifteen years and now I have Stanton ST150’s, was curious about the lp120... should have left it at that.

      Fair enough opinion. I have two pairs of Technics (a pair of mk2s and a pair of mk5s) in addition to the at-lp120s. At the end of the day, as I said, go with Technics if you can. Also, as I said, I still recommend the at-lp120 for home use.

    I'd get Technics, if they weren't over 2000 dollars...

    I'm a jock from back in the 80s early 90s. If your a good jock you can make any turntable sound great. We never dealt with this bullshit. I mean this in a nice way. We just mixed. Our SYNC BUTTON ...was a good mix.

      No turntable I have ever used had sync on it. I use my ears and the pitch control.

    No. Go for Reloop RP8000's you will never look back. 👍

      I have heard good things about the Reloop. That is also another Hanpin based turntable. However, the 8000 is considerably more expensive than the at-lp120, more than twice the cost. Also, personally, I'm not interested in having the midi control incorporated into the turntable. I would always recommend the modular solution.

      @@DroidApproved I use Serato, through a Behringer DDM
      4000, digitised through a Denon DS1 and with a Reloop Neon for added fun. 👍

      The ddm4000 is a great mixer for the price. It is one of my favorites, especially with the Infinium crossfader installed. For the most part, my laptop is mainly for show. Most of the time I use regular vinyl.

    Too bad they f'ed them up by adding a pre-amp.

    • @DroidApproved
      @DroidApproved  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pre-amp does not affect the turntable's performance in the least when it comes to back cueing, scratching, or beat matching records, which is the point of this review.
