I'm a lifelong metalhead and AIC is one of my all-time favorite bands. I think what metalheads appreciate about them, especially in the Layne Staley era, is their darkness. Both lyrically and musically. Check out "Love, Hate, Love' Live at the Moore". Black and white, raw af, dark and passionate. Amazing performance. Peace.
Layne was one of a kind, and he and Jerry Cantrell’s voices together are so good. The self titled album with the 3 legged dog on the cover is a great one too!
@@michelleabernathy9092 Have you seen the movie Singles 1992. The movie was the unofficial introduction of "Grunge Rock" Alice In Chains, Sound Garden and Pearl Jam, way before they were named Pearl Jam.
They really don't. They have a couple songs that are okay but the rest are just absolute perfection every time. The entire jar of flies album was written in a week. 7 songs written in 7 days and every single one is gold. Layne's voice has so much grit and power behind it you can't help but feel the words crawling under your skin.
The pipe in the mouth FX is called a "Talk Box" there's also another fx called a wah pedal. Check out Alice in chains "Love Hate Love" live at the Moore or the album version...the vocals are incredible.
You know, a great example showing this would be if he reviewed Peter Frampton's "Do you feel..." The live version on YT from "Midnight Special" TV show shows it well. But I prefer the album version from "Frampton Comes Alive" --we ALL had that record.
Molly you must, MUST do Love, Hate, Love live at the Moore. One of the most astonishing live vocal performances in rock or any other genre. I'm serious bro, get to it :)
AiC were way better than Nirvana imo. Layne's voice was Sick as hell. Btw Funny thing is that AIC never considered themselves as a grunge band , but a Metal band who happened to come outta the Seattle scene.
Funny thing about the genre. Pretty much all of the big Grunge bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains hated the term "Grunge". Fun fact: Alice In Chains were a glam band before going Grunge
@@nielgregory108 Alice In Chains were from Seattle. Layne Staley died in his apartment in Renton, an suburb of Seattle. They were fans of Heart, also of Seattle.
Showing some nice range Molly. These guys are great. I am sure you will get song recommendations for Rooster, Down in a Hole, Them Bones… personal favourite Junkhead🤘
I always like that one myself. Sad to say, but ‘junkhead’ was a song to which I could relate very very easily for nearly 25 years of my life. I tend to like songs that are personally relatable. My top favourite AIC, songs are: “junk head“, “nutshell“, “bleed the freak”, “ Would? “, “angry chair”, “down in a hole”, and “it ain’t like that”. Pardon the capitalisation errors; however, I dictated all this shite, and there’s no way to tell my iPad to capitalise something. Now then, just because a song isn’t listed here, doesn’t mean I don’t like it; in fact, I love the majority of Alice In Chains songs, which is not something I can say for most bands. I think the only other bands in which I love a majority of their workare… Blue oyster cult, pink Floyd, Alice In Chains, the stone Roses, Mr bungle, throbbing gristle, the chameleons, the replacements, X, the sound, magazine. I would say that with all those bands, I like 90+ percent of everything they’ve created. There are a few others, I just can’t think of them at the moment. No, just because I didn’t
Love Hate Love live at the Moore is a must. I hope you're making a list.lol Down in a Hole is awesome too and I suggest studio version before live unplugged.
On this track the guitarist is using both a talk box (“that thing you put in your mouth”), and a wah pedal. Both create a similar, although distinct, effect by altering the frequency boost/cut of the guitar.
For the record, the original lyric is not, “buried in my pit.” It’s “buried in my sh!t.” It’s been changed to pit and spit on radio, etc. As an OG grunge fan and AIC mega fan, it’s so cool to see younger people appreciate the genre.
You need to check out the song "Love Hate Love" Live at the Moore in Seattle. Layne was an incredible vocalist. So sad that we lost him way too soon. His drug addiction won the battle...
The Man in the Box was a man named Doc who lived in a cardboard box in downtown Seattle. He managed to get a job at a local nightclub setting up for shows. One weekend they were setting up a showcase for labels to see the local music scene. Doc got to talking to a lady from a label and she offered him a job. The last they saw of Doc was him heading to LA to work for the label. True story. My husband's band was in that showcase.

Cantrell has a wah on his guitar. Layne had a serious voice. This is one of my favorite Cantrell chops. As a player you can tell when he switches pickups on the solo.
Alice In Chains debuted in 1990 w/ this album 'Facelift'... they were from Seattle, same as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, so they were heavily associated w/ the 90's grunge rock scene... Alice In Chains toured extensively, opening for anyone who would take them. With Nirvana and Pearl Jam breaking big in 1992, the press dubbed the new rock sound 'grunge'... Alice In Chains was next in line and released the album 'Dirt' - it was a dark, heavy album that addressed the perils of he+++n addiction... Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr were both using the drug and it would lead to Mike Starr being fired in 1993 and replaced by Mike Inez (bass) Sadly, Mike Starr passed away in 2011 from a prescription OD. 'Dirt' was a huge success of MTV and sold 4x platinum in the US (4 million copies) ... They ended up recording another EP 'Jar of Flies' which was a (semi) acoustic record in 7 days and it charted at #1 in the US in 1994 and sold another 4x platinum. It had huge singles - 'Rooster' ... 'Would?' ... 'Them bones' ... 'Down in a hole' ... 'Angry chair'... 🤘🤘 However, Layne Staley was still struggling w/ addiction and Alice In Chains ceased all touring in 1994... In 1995, they released a self-titled album (often called 'Tripod' for the 3-legged dog on the cover) which charted at #1 again. Alice In Chains did the 'MTV Unplugged' show in 1996 and opened 4 shows for the rock band Kiss that summer... In 2002, Layne Staley was found dead from an apparent OD. In 2005, Jerry Cantrell decided to reunite Alice In Chains (W/ Sean Kinney and Mike Inez) for a benefit concert and William DuVall (vocals) sang Layne's parts... In 2006, Alice In Chains launched a comeback tour w/ William DuVall as their new singer. They have been actively recording and touring since... their albums w/ DuVall included - 'Black gives way to blue' (2009)... 'The Devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier For' (2018)
OK...this will be epic, too. This vocals in the chorus give me chills every goddamn time I'm listening to this one. Facelift and Dirt are albums for the ages.
If you really want to be impressed by his vocals, listen to "love hate love" live at the Moore 1990, the live version is better than the studio version, and this is him in his prime
Now you are getting into some real good music and the sad story that is Layne Staley. Layne’s last live performance he was basically a walking dead man but still gave his all. My introduction to the band was Rooster, I was hooked.
Good job getting into some different stuff and doing AIC!! They have a lot of great songs! Their first 2 albums, Facelift and Dirt, are both solid from beginning to end. You should definitely check out Soundgarden sometime, too. Chris Cornell (singer) is widely considered to be one of the greatest vocalists in rock. Sadly, along with Layne, he is gone as well.
AIC is kind of its own genre. It’s a mix of grunge, hard rock, lingers on the edge of metal, has a lot of blues influence. It gets the grunge label a lot because it was during the grunge era… yet they set themselves apart from a lot of grunge bands.
I saw Alice In Chains in 1991; the were the opening act for the legendary Clash Of The Titans tour (Anthrax, MegaDeth, and Slayer). My ticket cost $19.
@@brettkenschaft4239 Sadly, yes. Shoes were being thrown, but AIC soldiered on. Of course, the band would have the last laugh, co-headlining with Primus at the third Lollapalooza only a few years later (another killer show I had the privilege of seeing). And honestly, ANY band struggled back then when they played with Slayer.
@brettschacht4183 Thanks, that's what I thought. I guess the hardcore thrash crowd just wasn't ready for grunge. I bet when "Man in the Box" started blowing up a lot of those people changed their tune and bragged how they saw them in the early days, though. I unfortunately missed that show but was already a big AIC fan. Them and Soundgarden were my favorites!
The effect you were asking about is called a "talk box", it plays the guitar sound through a tube that you stick in your mouth, pitch is controlled with mouth shapes.
Dude, i'm a nirvana fan since my 12 years old (1993), here in France Alice in chains wasn't play on radios. I heared of them in magazines and i forgot. Thanks to TH-cam i finally discovered them some years ago and felt in love with them and specially Layne's voice. Same feelings than my nirvana journey! Dive in it. Kurt said one day "i don't have so much voice but Layne have an hell of a voice".
You're kidding? I'm Not 😂 Layne Stayle (RIP) had a magical voice. It makes you feel the pain and struggle he was singing about. And the misic might not be that heavy, but it's hard, though. Check out "Rooster", "Them Bones", "Love, Hate, Love" and "Angry Chair". And if you like really good vocals, listen to Pearl Jam. Cheers, Mate.
AiC was one of my favorite bands growing up, I was truly devastated when I learned Layne died(4/20 2002🥺) I graduated the next year, and I played Man in the Box live at school with the band we put together at school! Check out Soundgarden sometime(Chris Cornell, one of the other Grunge gods)
I love your reactions and commentary so much, I’m going down the rabbit hole of your videos! This is one of the absolute best things you will ever hear!
Layne and Jerry(Lead singer and guitar player) harmonize incredibly well. Layne is another one we lost to heroin. He was super talented with a powerful voice. Please check out... Mad Season - River of Deceipt Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun Pearl Jam - Alive Alice In Chains - Angry Chair Some new music for you. Youll get views from these....
Still one of my fave songs from that era, I went through some hard times in the ‘90s and the dark subversive tone of AIC actually helped me cope with some heavy emotional trauma. I think Layne had a unique voice that was mesmerizing in its intensity of expression.
I remember entering the rabbit hole. It was when I saw grunge singers listed that had passed away, and I said, “Who is Layne Staley?….” Never leaving the hole, only going deeper!!!!!
They were fantastic. I listen to their Unplugged album straight through from start to finish constantly. I had 88k minutes of listening time on Spotify this past year and it was the album I listened to most.
The effect on Jerry Cantrell’s guitar- the one with the bit of surgical tubing, what goes in your mouth - that’s called a Talk Box. Jerry uses both a Talkbox and a Wah-Wah pedal in this tune. Most of the ‘wow-wow’ sounds are actually just the Wah-Wah pedal. However, anytime, they repeat the intro riff, Jerry will switch on the talk box. Jerry Cantrell is up there amongst my favourite five or six guitarists, which says a lot for him because that list is very exclusive. The others on that list are the likes of Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Lindsey Buckingham, and Buck Dharma. That high on my list, I can’t rank-order them in terms of who is my favourite.
One of my fave bands ever ! Check out songs by them like Them Bones , Would , and one of the best live vocal performances ever Love Hate Love -Live at The Moore . That whole 30 minute set is one of the best live shows you will ever see . RIP to the singer Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr .
Love all the reactions to the heavy stuff and the grunge- grew up listening to all these groups. I definitely suggest doing as many of the mtv unplugged versions of Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains is one of a few bands that sound better live. Check out AiC live at the Moore Theater (1990) and/or MTV Unplugged (1996). Great reaction!
Dope reaction homie. Alice in Chains is one of the most talented bands of the 90's. Here are some other songs from them to check out, Would, Rooster, Angry Chair and Again. R.I.P to Layne Staley.🙏
Since you enjoyed the vocals so much, take a look for 'best live Man in the Box vocals' compilations, to see how Layne went full on with this chorus live.
Alice in Chains are one of my favorite 90's bands, Layne Staley is an amazing vocalist, more Alice in Chains please! Love, Hate, Love, the Live at the Moore version, I stay away, and also Nutshell are my favorites.
That guitar affect I believe your referring to is a “talk box”. Incorporates the musicians voice into the guitar and melts them together making the “waaw” sound. Sucky part is the guitarists has to put a tube in his mouth to achieve the sound
The Metal Community Had mad Props for these Guys …There was a Show or tribute recently and Phil Anselmo Did a cover from them called (Would?)…On Vocals

Love Hate Love live at the Moore
EDIT: You made the latest reaction compilation video for TOOL 🤘
I saw Alice In Chains in 1991; the were the opening act for the legendary Clash Of The Titans tour (Anthrax, MegaDeth, and Slayer). My ticket cost $19.
Saw it in San Antonio! It was my first rock concert, and still remains in my Top 5 live shows of all time.
I've heard that AIC wasn't received very well at those shows and got booed a lot. Any truth to that?
@@brettkenschaft4239 You're 100% right. And I'm with you, Soundgarden and AIC were (and are) equal in my eyes alongside the thrash legends!
Would, rooster, love hate love. Those three is their best.
That effect on the vocals is called a “talkbox”. It works in tandem with the guitar.
The whole album Dirt is one of the best grunge albums
“Them bones” by AIC is definitely worth a listen, personally my favorite song by them
90's rock is way different than 80's rock and its crazy how it changed overnight
I'm Not 😂
Layne Stayle (RIP) had a magical voice.
I saw Van Hager (van halen) at the tacoma Dome and a brand new band opened for them...Alice in Chains.
Love Hate Love, live. Studio versions before the unplugged for all the rest. Would, Rooster, Rain when I die, Nutshell, Down in a hole, No excuses.
Love hate love live and nutshell acoustic are great tracks
I love your reactions and commentary so much, I’m going down the rabbit hole of your videos! This is one of the absolute best things you will ever hear!
Layne and Jerry(Lead singer and guitar player) harmonize incredibly well. Layne is another one we lost to heroin. He was super talented with a powerful voice.
Please check out...
Mad Season - River of Deceipt
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Pearl Jam - Alive
Alice In Chains - Angry Chair
Some new music for you. Youll get views from these....
Still one of my fave songs from that era, I went through some hard times in the ‘90s and the dark subversive tone of AIC actually helped me cope with some heavy emotional trauma. I think Layne had a unique voice that was mesmerizing in its intensity of expression.
Don’t know how no one is requesting nutshell, one of the deepest and most emotional songs of all time in my opinion
Have a listen to band called Jinjer, song called Pisces.
Down the rabbit hole you go .... SOOOOO many great songs
Down in A Hole..unplugged, Rooster, Would. So many great songs. One of my fav bands of all time.
Saw them in 1991 with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth, they held their own and impressed the hell out of us!!!!
Love all the reactions to the heavy stuff and the grunge- grew up listening to all these groups. I definitely suggest doing as many of the mtv unplugged versions of Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam
I didn't care for much of the grunge era but AIC really stood out for me and I loved their sound
Live at the Moore is like no other. Layne doing this live will blow your mind.
Love Hate Love, live at the Moore, is my favorite Alice In Chains song! A must see for Laynes voice and Jerry’s guitar playing!!!
Alice in Chains is one of a few bands that sound better live. Check out AiC live at the Moore Theater (1990) and/or MTV Unplugged (1996). Great reaction!
Definitely check out Would? by Alice In Chains. Preferably the live version in Jools holland. Vocals are incredible
When grunge happened, it wasn’t a movement. It was completely organic, the product of an environment that only existed here, in Seattle.
Thanks for that one brev! This album also has Sea of Sorrow, Bleed the Freak and Love, Hate, Love...js
Alice in Chains are one of my favorite 90's bands, Layne Staley is an amazing vocalist, more Alice in Chains please! Love, Hate, Love, the Live at the Moore version, I stay away, and also Nutshell are my favorites.
Nutshell. Somber tune, but is the SHIT!!
That guitar affect I believe your referring to is a “talk box”. Incorporates the musicians voice into the guitar and melts them together making the “waaw” sound. Sucky part is the guitarists has to put a tube in his mouth to achieve the sound
The first big tour Alice In Chains did was opening for Judas Priest. They were and are an alternative-metal band.
Nutshell, Bleed the Freak, Would and Down in a Hole are must hear music! Layne Staley's voice on its own level.
The Metal Community Had mad Props for these Guys …There was a Show or tribute recently and Phil Anselmo Did a cover from them called (Would?)…On Vocals
Love AIC. Goosebumps every time! Great reaction!
“Love Hate Love”
Live in Seattle. Vocal brilliance
RIP Layne
Love Alice in Chains. Such a great band.
I've never met a person that didn't love Alice in Chains, and I never want to. 🖤Layne🖤
