  • On August 15, 1969, Swami Satchidananda was asked to give an opening address at the famed Woodstock Music Festival to set a tone of peace and harmony for what became one of the largest gatherings in festival history. This is the story of his arrival and talk at Woodstock.
"Swami Satchidananda’s opening invocation at Woodstock, witnessed by nearly half a million youngsters and seen in part in the Oscar-winning documentary about the mud-and-acid-soaked weekend accelerated public awareness of India’s heritage of inner exploration. The founder of the Integral Yoga Institute/Integral Yoga International and the most popular guru among counterculture New Yorkers at the time, Swami Satchidananda was helicoptered to Woodstock from Manhattan by organizers who thought that a wise elder might start things off on a serene note. With his long gray beard and flowing hair, the Swami was right out of central casting, and his message played to the generation’s sense of importance. “America is helping everybody in the material field,” he said, “but the time has come for America to help the whole world with spirituality also.” He exhorted everyone
present to take responsibility for the success of the festival. Responsibility was not a very popular word in hippie circles, but coming from someone seen as an advocate of peace and freedom-the inner variety-the message was taken seriously, and any misgivings the kids might have had were dissolved in the Sanskrit chant that the Swami led before blessing the crowd and departing. To this day, many believe that his good vibes averted what could have become a catastrophe as the festival anticipated." ~Philip Goldberg, author of "American Veda."

I love Swami Satchidananda and I was there. It was an amazing energy field of love and harmony. thee was no mud however, whoever wrote that . I believe that was the second Woodstock. In August of 1969 it was a beautiful summer with blue sky and sun. People were respecting and honoring others. A unity experience.

There was rain toward the end of Woodstock and lots of mud. Maybe you didn't stay till the end? ~Admin

Mind blowing - humbled human being. The history of Woodstock and knowing that even back then America loved Swami. SIMPLE LIVING is MORE. Your children are your WEALTH and parents are your GOD.

I love Swami Satchidananda. Find the peace inside ourselves first is most important to experience. I love him and especially for his lighthearted being - his wonderful sense of humor. Om Shanti.

What I wouldn't have done to have been there at this glorious once in many lifetimes event. When people had hope & celebration for a better life experience. We are so far from these ideals now - we need another Woodstock like happening badly.

You should have used his entire welcoming to Woodstock, since he re-recorded it for that album.

Yes, we wanted to include as much of the original, 1969 recording as we could. Om Shanti. ~Admin

Well, the very first piece is Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo Chile", the next is a song written by Joni Mitchell entitled "Woodstock", not sure who is performing it here but Crosby Stills and Nash performed it too.

@@Johnny_RB- I think you got it right, I was there, but my memory is a little spotty. I know there were 2 or 3 other stages all going on at the same time, but there seems to be little record of those performances.
